CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Putting on my uniform in the morning is not a chore and it will never be. Wearing the uniform of the United States Air Force, whatever it may be at any point in time, will always be a privilege. The uniform isn’t just an outfit, it’s a symbol of freedom, sacrifice, heritage and hope for the future. Being part of the Air Force instills a sense of pride many have felt through serving, and yet a feeling many people have not, nor will ever experience. In my short time of donning the uniform I’ve learned what it really means to be part of something bigger than myself.

In middle school and high school I rarely involved myself in extracurricular activities. I didn’t think I was cut out for any one particular group; I especially never foresaw being a part of the United States Armed Forces. When I realized I had no secure path in front of me, I started to understand the military wasn’t just some exclusive club. I envisioned myself being that service member I looked up to for sacrificing so much for our country and for their own families. I made the choice I wanted a better life for myself, my fiancée and for the family I want to start. I be-

came set on bettering myself through the military, while also doing my part to serve my nation and the people who make it so great.

low directly in their footsteps, I still share one distinctly visible thing with them. We all wear U.S. Air Force proudly across our hearts. My uniform is my connection to the past heroes I admire, and it is my connection to my dreams and goals to better the Air Force, my teammates and myself.

I put on the uniform because I’m a proud member of the Air Force and I intend to uphold our image and contribute to our mission for years to come.

Schriever Airmen stay fit-to-fight year-round

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — As the days shorten and the weather gets colder, the physical fitness standards for Airmen do not change — they must stay fit-to-fight year-round, regardless of weather conditions.

Practicing proper cold-weather safety can keep Airmen fit and safe during the winter months.

Seth Cannello, 50th Force Support Squadron fitness and sports manager, said it’s important for Airmen to stay fit 24/7, 365 to ensure the Air Force has a missionready force. He said a primary factor to consider when working out in the cold is proper apparel.

“Don’t wear cotton,” Cannello said. “When you sweat, cotton gets wet and won’t dry. When you’re wet, you lose heat quicker and run the risk of hypothermia. Gloves, hats or beanies are a must.”

Safety is a priority when it comes to physical fitness.

If an Airman experiences any unusual shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, lightheadedness or any unusual symptoms, stop exercising and if necessary, follow up with a health care provider.

“You should be cold when you start [your] workout,” he said. “If you are comfortable at the start of your workout, you will probably end up shedding layers as your body temperature increases. It’s hard to carry your extra clothing with you when you are working out, so be careful not to over dress.”

According to Air Force Instruction 36-2905, “Fitness Program,” Airmen are required to take their physical fitness assessment test in temperatures 20 degrees or

warmer with sustained winds under 15 miles-per-hour and gusting winds under 20 MPH. Airman 1st Class Zachary Jones, 50th FSS career development specialist, was recognized as competitor of the quarter, third quarter, by the base fitness center and scored a 99 on his physical fitness assessment.

“Staying fit-to-fight year-round is important for your health and well-being,” he said. “We have a duty to stay ready for anything the Air Force throws at us.”

Jones said cold weather can lead to injuries and affect Airmen’s physical readiness, preventing them from performing their duties at peak performance.

“Your muscles tighten up,” he said. “This could lead to muscle strains and pulls. Make sure to take advantage of all the time you’re given to stretch and even take a warmup lap to prepare your body for your workout.”

Staying hydrated is important year-round, especially in Colorado with the high altitude and lack of oxygen.

People often forget about it in winter because of the snow and ice, but it’s essential to staying healthy, said Jones.

During winter, the days are shorter with more hours of darkness. Airmen should prepare for this and plan accordingly.

“Headlights are important to have with you even if you don’t think you’ll need one,” Cannello said. “I’ve talked to numerous runners that ended up working-out longer than they anticipated and found themselves in bad situations because they couldn’t see.”

Staying mission-ready is an integral part of being in the Air Force. By practicing the proper cold-weather safety tips, Airmen can ensure they’re fit-to-fight year-round.

50th Space Wing Airman warms Arctic with dad jokes, smiles

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — More than 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle is the Department of Defense’s northernmost installation and despite the cold temperatures, an Airman warms people’s days with dad jokes and smiles.

Master Sgt. Marcus Smith, 23rd Space Operations Squadron Det. 1 chief, is stationed at Thule Air Base, Greenland, a remote assignment that takes service members away from their families for a year. Despite being away from his family, Smith said there are positives to every situation.

“Focus on what matters most,” he said. “When you focus on that, you put things in perspective and start to realize things aren’t so bad. Once you start counting all of your blessings, you get rich quick.”

Smith has served in the Air Force for more than 19 years, assigned to locations such as Greenland, Korea and Germany.

He said his relationships with Airmen go beyond contracts and stations. “[Airmen are] family,” he said. “You want them to succeed like a brother or sister. Show empathy, sympathy and listen without just waiting to talk, because at the end of the day we’re all focused on the same mission.”

Capt. John Bang, 23rd Space Operations Squadron Det. 1 commander and Smith’s supervisor, has worked alongside Smith as the only other service member at the isolated detachment.

“Smith has a very strong work ethic,” he said. “He’s proactive in identifying problems and solutions for those problems.

He’s a great leader and follower. He makes sure the mission gets completed, and takes time out of his busy day to mentor junior members at the installation.”

Smith, whose father was a preacher, learned the importance of reaching out to others at a young age. While he was stationed in Germany, a service member who knew Smith’s father as a child approached him and told Smith the impact his father had on his life. Inspired, Smith has made it his goal to leave a positive impact on the lives of everyone he meets. “[Smith’s] work ethic and caring nature motivate me daily,” Bang said. “He takes care of others, not only in his chain of command, but across the installation.”

Smith is also a member of the Top 3 executive committee, which is tasked with ensuring programs and activities are run successfully across the installation to care for Airmen and contractors.

X-37B breaks record, lands after 780 days in orbit

By Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON — The Air Force’s X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle Mission 5 successfully landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility Oct. 27, at 3:51 a.m.

The spaceplane conducted on-orbit experiments for 780 days during its mission, recently breaking its own record by being in orbit for more than two years. As of today, the total number of days spent on-orbit for the entire test vehicle program is 2,865 days.

“The X-37B continues to demonstrate the importance of a reusable spaceplane,” said Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett. “Each successive mission advances our nation’s space capabilities.”

This is the Air Force’s premier reusable and unmanned spacecraft, providing the performance and flexibility to improve technologies in a way that allows scientists and engineers to recover experiments tested in a long-duration space environment.

“The safe return of this spacecraft, after breaking its own endurance record, is the result of the innovative partnership between government and industry,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein. “The sky is no longer the limit for the Air Force and, if Congress approves, the U.S. Space Force.”

Managed by the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, the X-37B program performs risk reduction, experimentation and concept of operations development for reusable space vehicle technologies.

“This program continues to push the envelope as the world’s only reusable space vehicle. With a successful landing today, the X-37B completed its longest flight to date and successfully completed all mission objectives,” said Randy Walden, Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office director. “This mission successfully hosted Air Force Research Laboratory experiments, among others, as well as providing a ride for small satellites.”

The distinctive ability to test new systems in space and return them to Earth is unique to the X-37B program and enables the U.S. to more efficiently and effectively develop space capabilities necessary to maintain superiority in the space domain.

Mental health awareness is a family affair

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The mental health of service members is a major focus across the Department of Defense, but another concern is the wellbeing of military families.

Capt. Louis Pagano, 21st Medical Squadron mental health service chief and director of psychological health, said taking care of families is directly tied to taking care of the mission.

“Some of our family members face a lot of challenges, it can feel isolating arriving at a new base or experiencing grief from within their own family,” she said.

According to Hermosillo, when family members are not focused on their own mental health it can have a negative effect on the family unit.

“It can impact the children within the family unit or even family members outside of the core unit,” she said. “It is not limited to just those within that immediate unit. It encompasses parents and siblings, so it has a ripple effect of worry outside of the core. Taking care of the mental health of everyone is really a priority.”

The military affords families medical care access through TRICARE, allowing them to see by a provider at military medical clinics or hospitals. Families of military members also have the option of seeing a health care provider within the community via the TRICARE network.

“Military members and their dependents have access to resources such as couples counseling, parenting classes and classes for ongoing concerns,” Pagano said.

Knowing what health and wellness services are available can ease the stresses of moves and transitions and it a make little easier for members and their families. “[Dependents] should know they are not alone,” she

As a key spouse, Hermosillo said she always likes to make sure families are welcome as they arrive and know what is available to them, but it’s not just families.

“Single service members are a part of the key spouse program as well, and sometimes even the parents of the single service member, because they are experiencing something new as well,” she said.

There are a wide array of health and wellness agencies and resources not only in the Air Force community, but also within the Front Range available to military members and their families.

Pagano said the Defense Health Agency has reorganized how medical groups are placing emphasis on military dependents and their health.

“We have squadrons now dedicated to taking care of families and retirees because we know it’s that important,” he said. “Less than one percent of the country serves in the military and we are an all-volunteer force. People don’t usually join the military unless they have someone in their family who served in the military. Taking care of the family is taking care of the military’s future.”

Military Exchanges halt vape sales

WASHINGTON — The Army and Air Force Exchange Service and the Navy Exchange have stopped selling vaperelated products.

AAFES removed vape-related products from its shelves Sept. 30. Navy Exchange Service Command removed products from NEX retail shelves and directed NEX concessionaires and vendors to discontinue the sale of vaping products after Oct. 1.

Vape products, including e-cigs, e-cigarettes, vapes and e-hookahs, are electronic nicotine delivery devices that heat a sometimes flavored nicotine-infused liquid into a vapor that users inhale. In recent months, there have been reports of illnesses and deaths that are believed to be associated with the use of vape products.

“The vapor that users inhale can contain ultrafine particles, carcinogens, volatile organic compounds and heavy metals,” said Public Health Service Capt. Kimberly Elenberg, director of Total Force Fitness for the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness. “Vaping is not harmless, and researchers are still trying to understand the long-term impacts and health effects from inhaling the vapor.”

NEXCOM officials said Navy exchanges carried two vaperelated products in the tobacco sale area of their stores.

Those products, “e-cigarettes,” have been removed from shelves. Additionally, NEXCOM directed Navy Exchange concessionaires and vendors to discontinue the sale of vaping products in any NEX location.

AAFES officials said their stores’ offering of vape-related products already was limited, and that its exchanges had already stopped offering flavored vape liquids because of Food and Drug Administration concerns with the appeal of the products to underage customers. By the end of September, AAFES had removed products from two manufacturers from its shelves.

While proponents of vape products argue that vaping is safer than using traditional tobacco products such as cigarettes, Elenberg said it’s actually too early to tell.

“E-cigarettes generally contain less chemicals compared to traditional products like cigarettes, but since the long-term effects of vaping are unknown and not understood, there is

Even if the ingestion of nicotine is deemed safer though vaping than through traditional products, nicotine itself is still a dangerous chemical, said Dr. Donald Shell, the director of disease prevention, disease management and population health policy and oversight in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Services Policy and Oversight.

“Nicotine is an extremely addictive, naturally occurring toxic chemical derived from the tobacco plant.”

While current information regarding nicotine as a carcinogen is inconclusive, Shell said, nicotine is highly addictive, and young adults and adolescents are especially vulnerable to its addictive properties.

AF announces new officer developmental categories Secretary of the Air Force and Air Force Reserve Command Public Affairs WASHINGTON, D.C. — In an effort to enhance the officer talent management system and enable tailored and agile development, the Air Force is expanding the single Line of the Air Force promotion category into six distinct developmental categories, senior officials here announced Oct. 21.

“This is an important step forward in the way Air Force leaders are developed,” said Secretary of the Air Force Barbara M. Barrett. “The team has done exceptional work to get us to this point and I look forward to implementing this together.”

Over the summer, Air Force officials traveled to more than a dozen bases to hold 42 town hall sessions. They talked with more than 3,700 Airmen about the proposed developmental categories change and captured feedback.

The Line of the Air Force category will be expanded into six categories: Air Operations and Special Warfare, Nuclear and Missile Operations, Space Operations, Information Warfare, Combat Support, and Force Modernization. Categories for judge advocates, chaplains and medical personnel will remain unchanged. For the regular Air Force, the change will take effect in March 2020 with the lieutenant colonel promotion board.

“This change is about ensuring we maintain a winning team,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein. “The existing Line of the Air Force category has served our Air Force well and molded the excellent leaders we have today. As we look to the future of warfighting, we must have an agile system that allows for a wider range of development paths to ensure officers have the needed skills and expertise to fight and win. This sets us on that path.”

The Reserve’s plan is to implement these new categories with its lieutenant colonel selection board scheduled for June 2020.

Before the change, the Line of the Air Force category was comprised of more than 40 different officer Air Force Specialty Codes and accounted for about 80 percent of the officer corps. The Line of the Air Force category has remained virtually unchanged since the establishment of the Air Force as a separate service in 1947.

Now, rather than competing for promotion against 40 different career fields with varied job requirements, officers will compete against officers in other fields that have similar progression milestones, experiences and mission area focus.

The new categories will allow each career field the freedom and agility to better tailor officer development to meet job demands without compromising competitive position at a promotion board.

The Air Force has released several reforms over the last couple years as part of a larger talent management system reform. Goldfein said the next phase of the reforms will address performance management.

“We believe maximizing the development of all Airmen is about having the right education, training and experiences. Getting this right enhances individual and unit performance,” Goldfein said.

“Our goal through these efforts, and others, is to unleash the capabilities of our people to be ready for tomorrow’s fight.”

“We have some details to be worked out for some AFSCs and careers unique to the Air Force Reserve and we will find the best fit within these six developmental categories for everyone on our team,” Scobee said. “We’ll publish more information and details in the coming weeks.”

2019 TRICARE Open Season, Federal Benefits Open Season starts next month TRICARE Communications FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Did you know that the TRICARE Open Season and Federal Benefits Open Season happen only once a year? Unless you experience a Qualifying Life Event, open season is your only chance to enroll in or make a change to your enrollment for the participating programs.

TRICARE Open Season applies to anyone enrolled in or eligible for a TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select health plan.

Federal Benefits Open Season is for enrollment in a Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program dental and vision plan. Both the TRICARE and FEDVIP open seasons will run from Nov. 11 to Dec. 9. The enrollment choices that you make during this period will take effect Jan. 1, 2020.

Eligible TRICARE beneficiaries may purchase dental and vision coverage through FEDVIP during the Federal Benefits Open Season. If you’re already enrolled in a FEDVIP dental or vision plan and you don’t want to make a change, your enrollment will continue in 2020. If you wish to make changes to your existing plan, you must do so during open season.

You may choose between multiple vision and dental plans and carriers. Compare 2020 plans and rates using the FEDVIP plan comparison tool.

TRICARE Open Season

If you’re eligible to participate in TRICARE Open Season, you have three choices for your 2020 health coverage: • Do nothing. • Enroll in a plan. If you’re eligible for a TRICARE Prime option or TRICARE Select but not enrolled, you can enroll in a plan now.
