CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Back in April 2014, I was the Space Communication Squadron Commander at Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado.

The crisis action team was assembling to understand the circumstance of a significant communication outage, assess mission impacts, and prioritize and coordinate corrective actions. For weeks leading up to this day, the Buckley AFB flight line was undergoing a significant construction project, which included tearing up and replacing major portions of the runway. Despite extensive coordination, markings, flags and warnings, the project team successfully located a buried communications cable path, severing the only communication path to the east side of the base, isolating tenant organizations and mission critical capabilities.

When I surveyed the flight line construction site, I was amazed to see how effectively the bulldozer had unearthed and severely damaged a 3 feet by 3 feet concrete-encased communication conduit — hats off to my civil engineer brothers and sisters. This situation represents a normal day for a communications squadron commander, and I handed the entire situation off to the squadron deputy to lead and manage; as I had other business.

squadron was that the first sergeant and I were heading to Denver International Airport to meet the parents of Senior Airman Michael Snyder. Two days earlier, Snyder was riding his motorcycle through Denver when he was struck and killed by a drunk driver. Snyder did everything right; a safety conscious motorcycle enthusiast who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. I had never met or seen Snyder’s parents, but it was immediately obvious who they were as they came off the escalators, filing out with a crowd of other passengers. The first sergeant and

Airman clears mind, builds resilience on farm

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Growing up in the suburbs, Tech. Sgt. Michael Jones, 50th Space Wing Inspector General’s office wing exercise section chief, never thought he’d be working on a farm in his spare time.

After receiving a two-day notice he would deploy to Guantanamo Bay Naval Station, Cuba, in July 2018, and having his deployment changed from four months to nine months at one of the most secure detention camps at the station, Jones said he needed a break.

“I was doing detainee operations,” he said. “There were times where it got pretty stressful. I didn’t work with anyone I knew and I was put in charge of a shift full of E-4’s and above in the Army.”

“Jones handles any task thrown at him with ease and knocks it

out of the park.”

When he returned, Jones said he started a new job, didn’t know anyone and felt lost.

“One of my friends told me about the farm and so I asked him if I could help out and ever since then we’ve been partners…it’s strengthened our friendship and we’ve seen the farm grow before our eyes,” he said. “I enjoy going out there, it gives me a sense of purpose. I’m taking care of something and it feels amazing.”

Jones and his friend take care of and feed the chickens, turkeys, goats and ducks at the farm daily.

“I don’t come from a farming background, so learning how to build stuff and interacting with the animals [is] rewarding,” he said. “I jumped in right when I got back, so there wasn’t really a gap and it really helped me acclimate to being back in the states and getting back to normal. I found myself clearing my head and it was de-stressing.”

Leadership can start at any level and can be learned at any time throughout an Airman’s career.

“The lessons I’ve learned from the farm have helped me lead,” he said. “I’ve learned a greater sense of responsibility.

I’ve learned to listen better and that it’s OK to ask for help.”

Capt. Benjamin Christ, 50th SW IGs office exercise program manager and Jones’ supervisor, said Jones is an excellent worker and a great addition to the team.

“Jones handles any task thrown at him with ease and knocks it out of the park,” he said. “He’s a wonderful person to work with and always comes into the office with high spirits, motivated and excited to wear the uniform.”

As the wing exercise section chief, Jones is expected to help manage base-wide exercises that can involve thousands of people.

“He embodies the core values and lives up to the Airman’s Creed we all take when we put on the uniform,” Christ said.

“He acts with integrity and puts the Air Force before himself.”

Christ said when Jones goes to the farm during his lunch break, he returns even more motivated than before he went.

“He’s an excellent example of the many ways we can find outlets to manage stress in our day-to-day lives,” he said. “The Air Force can be very busy with a lot of stressors pulling us in different directions, by finding your niche where you can decompress and unload stress, you can come back to your daily duties as a more resilient Airman.”

Although he said it can be overwhelming, Jones said he wouldn’t think about giving up on the farm.

“If I were to cut off the farm I’d have to find something to replace it and right now the farm is what’s driving my motivation to do better and be better,” he said. “It keeps my thoughts positive and it adds something to my routine that makes my day better. This farm is a part of who I am.”

“I went out of my comfort zone and found something I love,” he said. “Connect with different people around you, find out what they do to cope with things, what drives them and what their hobbies are because you might find yourself latching onto that. I never would have thought of raising animals but it’s helped me out.”

was a member of my squadron, to the funeral service nine days later where I handed a flag to Snyder’s mother and expended rifle rounds to Snyder’s father — remain a vivid sequence of events in my mind.

What remains forefront in my memories is how the squadron came together to cope with this tragedy and how our relationships helped us through a difficult time.

The first sergeant and chief cared for me, the squadron and the Snyders. The casualty assistance representative and the entire force support squadron team of professionals guided us through activities to take care of Snyder and his family. The lieutenants I appointed as

the escort officer and summary court officer, challenging assignments for most young officers, executed their tasks with dignity and respect. The senior non-commissioned officer who organized Patriot Guard escorts through Buckley AFB to the airport; from Davenport, Iowa, to Snyder’s hometown of Secor, Illinois; and finally to Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Bloomington, Illinois.

The chaplain and staff who embraced the family and the squadron at a time of intense emotions. The various squadron members pulled together to mourn and honor Snyder, support one another, and embrace the Snyder family during the memorial service and other emotional events that followed.

I’m sharing this story for three reasons. The first is to honor and remember Senior Airman Michael Snyder — a son, brother, friend and Airman. This young man’s death offers a reminder about how precious and fragile

life is. The second is to reiterate the risks and impacts of drinking and driving. A family’s life changed forever; a squadron of Airmen scarred by the tragic event; and a valuable military asset lost — all results from one person’s decision to drive while impaired. And lastly, to emphasize the importance of personal relationships and connections. I believe it was because of the relationships we built in the weeks, months and years before the event that helped us weather the storm.

We all face personal and professional challenges. The relationships, connections, trust, personal and professional bonds, and commitment to one another will help us navigate rough waters. Spend time and effort now — as part of your mental, spiritual and social well-being — to build the relationships that will give you strength and purpose when you need it most

2nd SOPS decommissions 22-year-old satellite By 2nd Lt. Idalí Beltré Acevedo 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 2nd Space Operations Squadron decommissioned Satellite Vehicle Number 38, to give way to the next generation of GPS III satellites at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Oct. 9, 2019.

First Lieutenant Kristina Brandes, 2nd SOPS chief bus system analyst, said the squadron was disposing of the satellite because it is at the end of its operational life.

“It’s one of our oldest satellites that launched 22 years ago,” she said. “Once we turn off the transmitter (one of the final commands), it will basically be dead in the air...it will be tracked as space debris.”

The satellite will be located at a specific disposal orbit called MEO, or medium earth orbit.

Lt. Col. Michael Schriever, 2nd SOPS director of operations, highlighted the 2nd SOPS Airmen efforts during day-to-day operations.

“We tell [people during] tours, all the time, that the reason our constellation is so healthy is because of the Airmen who control it,” he said. “[There are] a couple decades of experience here across the members who continued page 9 | DECOMMISSION

The 23rd Space Operations Squadron, Det. 1 is located more than 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The detachment is the northernmost Air Force Satellite Control Network site and is responsible for collecting data and pushing commands to AF satellites.

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — Members of the 23rd Space Operations Squadron Detachment 1 at Thule Air Base, Greenland, take pride in saying “Det. 1 is the best one,” because of the integral support it provides to our nation and military daily.

Capt. John Bang, 23rd SOPS det. 1 commander, said the detachment was established in 1961 to support the Polar Orbiting Geophysical Observatories satellite program, earning the site its POGO nickname.

The detachment’s primary duty is to provide telemetry, tracking and commanding operations to the United States and allied government satellite programs.

“Our parent squadron is located in New Hampshire and they work in conjunction with the 21st and 22nd SOPS as a part of the Air Force Satellite Control Network,” he said. “Det. 1’s role is to manage the Air Force Satellite Control Network for national use alongside our parent squadron and its other geographically separated units.”

The AFSCN is what connects the Air Force’s space operators to satellites, allowing them to collect data and push commands to the satellites. Det. 1’s 30 American and Danish contractors work to provide satellite connectivity for users in the polar region of the world.

“Without Det. 1, there would be a challenge in creating constant communications with certain assets,” he said. “We wouldn’t be able to collect data and push commands as frequently and as often as we’d like [if we weren’t here].”

Despite being in a remote location 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Bang said the unit has provided five years of error free support, or contacts, with satellites.

“The ops are run by people,” he said. “Everyone keeps our mission running from the engineer to the operator. We operate 24/7, 365 to continue [the mission]. Our operators will be here regardless of the weather and even stay overnight if it’s needed.”

Although coming into work regardless of weather may seem normal, the Arctic’s strong winds, unpredictable snow storms and an average winter tempera-

ture ranging from 13 to 20 degrees below zero, can make the journey to work dangerous.

“Because of our location, we’re not only able to provide coverage for the polar region of the earth, but [we can] contact certain satellites anywhere from 10 to 12 times a day,” said Master Sgt. Marcus Smith, 23rd SOPS Det. 1 chief.

The 50th Space Wing holds the title of “Master of Space” and will continue to maintain space and cyberspace warfighting superiority, a mission which 23rd SOPS Det. 1 is integral in assuring.

According to 1st Lt. Matthew Triplett, 2nd SOPS executive officer, the squadron decommissions about one satellite per year; the last satellite in June 2017. To date, 2nd SOPS has decommissioned a total of 37 satellites.

The squadron surprised Senior Master Sgt. Blair Burdick II, 2nd SOPS superintendent, who will retire from the Air Force in March 2020, with the opportunity to give the last shut-off command to SVN-38, effectively retiring the satellite.

“It was awesome,” he said. “I was here working in 1st Space Operations Squadron back in 1999 sending commands to SVN-38. That was 20 years ago and on a much older operational system. In March, I am ending my Air Force career and it’s kind of cool to complete this SVN’s Air Force career too. It means a lot.”

Schriever congratulated Burdick on his last official command and for his service in the Air Force and 2nd SOPS. “That’s a tribute to you too, 20-plus years of service, dedication and commitment to this service,” he said. “2nd SOPS is really appreciative of everything you have done for us. Congratulations, it’s an amazing moment and we appreciate it.”

The SVN-38 is a block II A vehicle which had a design life of 7.5 years. Most of the constellation’s satellites operate well beyond this time, as noted here this satellite lasted 22 years.

Schriever said they gained access through the VA to the government’s surplus system of items this year.

“Our team here ordered $25,000 worth of boots, coats and winter clothing from the government surplus system and were handed out to the veterans at this year’s stand down,” he said.

“Having the footprint of our Airmen

at the event shows our willingness to be in the community and show how much we care,”

Maj. Robyn Burrell, 310th Operations Group Standardization and Evaluation flight chief of standardization, and firsttime volunteer, said she thinks it is important to show veterans in the community that Front Range service members care.

“My experience volunteering has been great,” she said. “I got to work with a veteran named Oscar and it’s interesting to hear his take on life.”

Events such as this provide local service members a chance to connect with their local community.

“Having the footprint of our Airmen at the event shows our willingness to be in the community and show how much we care,” he said. “Service to your country is honorable and a great thing to do, but service to your fellow person is just as honorable and important.”

In addition to providing service, Airmen also had a chance to talk with the veterans about their military experience.

Volunteers from Fort Carson, Peterson AFB, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command were also on site to support.

“These military veterans have knowledge and experiences to share,” Schriever said. “The difference is, they are people who need a helping hand and at some point, we all may need someone to help us out, listen, or connect with us. This program makes that possible.”

Air Force observes National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is not all skeletons and jack-o-lanterns, there are also scary things that live in cyberspace.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month with this year’s theme, “Be Cyber Smart.”

The awareness month is a collaborative effort between the Department of Defense, along with the Department of Homeland Security and its public and private partners. It is up to the total force to stay vigilant, keep learning and be ready for any potential cyber threat.

The Air Force Office of Information Dominance and chief information officer worked to develop themes that align with the DoD weekly themes.

These weekly themes are meant to assist with changing the culture of cybersecurity throughout the Air Force: • Week 1: Cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility • Week 2: Defending the family — Cybersecurity practices at home • Week 3: Privacy, PII and FOIA — Reducing mission cyber risks by protecting information • Week 4: Phishing — Continuous training makes a difference An already scary cyber world can be scarier when one common threat, identity theft, comes knocking, seeking a reward. However, like other threats, being cyber smart can help the Air Force family be prepared and resilient. There are eight common types of identity theft: • Financial identity theft • Driver’s license identity theft • Criminal identity theft • Social security identity theft • Medical identity theft • Insurance identity theft • Child identity theft • Synthetic identity theft The most well-known is financial identity theft, classified in one of two ways: when a thief max-

es out credit, steals the victim’s money or when thieves open new credit cards and loans in the victim’s name.

Two more types of identity theft are driver’s license and criminal identity theft. Driver’s license theft is when a thief poses as the person, possibly damaging the victim’s driving record. Criminal identity theft takes place when the victim’s identity is used with police, resulting in a criminal record being created in the victim’s name. When this occurs, the victim of criminal identity theft can have problems with law enforcement or be unable to gain employment.

Another form of identity theft involves social security numbers and benefits. Most government benefits require a social security number to obtain.

Social security number thieves can falsify official documents when they have access to a victim’s social security number.

Medical identity theft can be used to commit fraud involving health insurance and medical coverage. Related to medical identity theft is insurance identity theft. Thieves leave the victim with the problems after they use the victim’s identity, including difficulties in settling payments, potentially higher insurance premiums and quite possibly trouble in acquiring medical coverage later on.

Even children fall victim to cyber threats and identity theft. A child’s information can be used to defraud the government, create documents, commit crimes and apply for loans. Additionally, when thieves can’t get a victim’s complete information, they can still use parts of an identification to create a synthetic identity.

Thieves can create scary problems for potential victims and leave them with problems. Knowing each common type is just the beginning of being cyber smart.

The 50th Space Wing Office of the Staff Judge Advocate hosted the Commanders and the Law training at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Oct. 15, 2019. Schriever will operate a base shuttle service on a trial basis until Nov. 15. The shuttle will operate in a loop with six stops to help Team Schriever personnel get to activities such as medical appointments, briefings, meetings and unit physical training at the fitness center.
