Schriever breast cancer survivor stresses

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual international campaign organized to increase awareness of the disease, educate people about the importance of early screening, and offer support to those affected.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women and one out of eight develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

Tech. Sgt. Jamie Ruíz, 21st Medical Squadron technician, was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2017.

“In April of 2017 I found out I had a lump in my left breast when my husband gave me a hug and I had pain, which isn’t normal because tumors aren’t painful,” she said. “After that, I got everything checked out and that’s when I found out I was positive for breast cancer. I started chemotherapy (about 5 months’ worth of chemo/16 sessions), then I had a [partial] mastectomy done and after I healed from that I [underwent] radiation treatment because the tumor was around 5 centimeters big.”

Ruíz’s diagnosis and treatment continued through December 2017. Her recommendation for women just learning of a breast cancer diagnosis or undergoing treatment is to maintain an optimistic outlook.

“Stay positive because you are going to come out of it at the end,” she said. “Positivity goes a long way, you will have your miserable days but you don’t want eight or nine months of feeling miserable. You can be miserable but it’s a lot of effort, who wants to be miserable all the time?”

Ruíz admitted she had moments when she did

break down and felt sad about her situation, but she quickly bounced back from her negativity recalling the lessons learned from her previous experience as an Air Force resiliency trainer assistant.

“Resiliency, we use it every day, we just don’t realize we use it until something big happens,” she said. “Having gone through RTA training made me more aware and gave me the tools to deal with this and see the silver lining in the bad stuff.”

Tech. Sgt. Jennifer Verran, 21st MDS medical technician, said preventive care is crucial to detecting breast cancer during its early stages, like Ruíz did.

“When it comes to breast cancer, we screen our patients and those 40 and above should get a mammogram every year or every couple of years if there is a family history of breast cancer,” she said.

Ruíz said she never expected to get breast cancer.

“I had no family history and I don’t have the breast cancer gene, it was one thing I never really thought about,” she said. “If you notice a lump get it checked, even if you think it’s nothing, get your mammograms, do your monthly breast checks.”

The NBCF encourages adult women of all ages to perform breast self-exams at least once a month.

“If immediate family members had breast cancer it means that they can pass the [cancer] genes to their kids, so they are at a higher risk of getting breast cancer,” Verran said.

Women with no family history of cancer may still get cancer so it is important to get screened regularly not just for breast cancer but for other high-risk cancers affecting women like ovarian, uterine, cervical and colorectal cancer.

527th Space Aggressor Squadron bids farewell to Army counterpart

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 527th Space Aggressor Squadron bid farewell to their joint mission partners, 4th Space Company Detachment 4, 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade, during an end-of-mission ceremony at the 527th SAS barn, Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Sept. 27, 2019.

According to Lt. Col. Jason Adams, 527th SAS commander, the ceremony marked the end of a three-year partnership between the squadron and battalion supporting the space mission, in which they had approximately 15 soldiers attached.

“This ceremony is our way of celebrating the partnership we have,” he said. “While it is hard to tell what the future holds, we will continue to develop [our partnership].”

Adams said, the partnership ended due to the Army unit’s training pipeline shortening, enabling Soldiers to get into their training faster and spoke to how the partnership ending would impact his squadron.

“This change will lead our unit to have to prioritize the exercises supported throughout the year, as the demand to support them has increased,” Adams said. “The usual waiting time before was a little longer than a year, but now their timeline has significantly decreased.”

Lt. Col. Mark Cobos, 1st Space Battalion commander, said the 527th SAS partnership shepherded, trained and employed several of the 1st Space Bn. Soldiers, to help increase their space warfighting skillset. “[527th SAS] has some unique expertise and capabilities that allow our Soldiers to understand the electromagnetic environment and the conditions under which [Soldiers] will employ their Army space capabilities,” Cobos said.

The 527th SAS prepares joint and coalition forces by teaching them to replicate GPS and electronic space threats in two skillsets: adversary threat academics and area threat replication.

Cobos added, his battalion has opportunities to bring [527th SAS] into some of their space training to enhance understanding and visualization of some ways land forces employ and require space support and capabilities.

Schriever recognizes Energy Action Month

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — October is Energy Action Month, a national campaign focusing attention on energy and water saving activities — and as a major energy user, Schriever Air Force Base is doing its part to conserve energy.

The theme for 2019 is “Energy Able…Mission Capable,” which serves as a call to action for service members to practice energy efficient habits in their daily lives, according to Abe Irshid, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron energy and utility manager.

“While efforts may seem small, energy saving choices can have big impact across the Air Force,” he said.

One of the ways Airmen can put energy efficient habits to practice, especially with cooler weather approaching, is to start thinking of ways to save energy.

“Now is the perfect time to focus on saving energy,” Irshid said. “October is a time to not just be aware, but to act.”

“Although October is the official energy month,

our goal is for efforts to continue long after October has ended.”

Irshid pointed to the three steps of optimizing facility energy use: • Use the right light for the job.

• At the end of the day, power down your space.

• Inform maintenance if you notice drafts, air leaks or heating, ventilation and air conditioning issues.

Stephen Cooper, 50th Contracting Squadron quality assurance manager and 50th Space Wing Headquarters building facility manager, said even small actions by Team Schriever employees helps strengthen the security and resilience of our base infrastructure.

“Everyone plays a role in energy efficiency,” Cooper said. “From turning off the lights to minding water usage in their respective facilities.”

Energy Action Month is designed to increase attention to energy use and develop energy efficient behaviors that will continue throughout the year.

“Although October is the official energy month, our goal is for efforts to continue long after October has ended,” Irshid said.

Air Force on schedule with new uniform issue timeline

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas — Trainees entering into basic military training at the 37th Training Wing the first week of October were the first group to be issued the new Operational Camouflage Pattern uniforms.

When Air Force officials announced last year they were adopting the Army OCP as the official utility uniform, they developed a three-year rollout timeline across the force for the entire changeover. Last week put them on target for issue to new recruits entering BMT. “Each trainee is issued four sets of uniforms with their initial issue,” said Bernadette Cline, clothing issue supervisor. “Trainees who are here in (Airmen Battle Uniforms) will continue to wear them throughout their time here and will be replaced when they get their clothing allowance.”

The 502nd Logistics Readiness Squadron Initial Issue Clothing outfits nearly 33,000 BMT trainees every year and maintains more than 330,000 clothing line items.

“We partner with Defense Logistics Agency who provides the clothing items upfront to be issued,” said Donald Cooper, Air Force initial clothing issue chief. “Then we warehouse and issue to the individuals’ size-specific clothing.”

After taking Airmen feedback into consideration, the uniform board members said they chose the OCP for the improved fit and comfort and so that they will blend in with their soldier counterparts’ uniforms in joint environments, according to Cooper.

“Right now, if someone deploys, they’ll get it issued,” Cline said. “And now that everyone is converting over to this uniform, (the trainees) already have the uniform to work and deploy in.”

Following the timeline, the OCP should now be available online for purchase as well.

The next mandatory change listed on the timeline, to take place by June 1, 2020, will be for Airmen’s boots, socks and T-shirts to be coyote brown. Also, officer ranks to the spice brown.

Switching from two different types of utility uniforms to just one, multifunctional uniform could also simplify life for the Airmen.

“I think the biggest value is going to be the thought that they aren’t required to have two uniforms anymore once they convert to a uniform that is for deployment and day-to-day work,’” Cooper said.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Peterson Air Force Base Family Advocacy Program hosted their second-annual Domestic Violence Awareness month bowling tournament, “Strike-Out Domestic Violence” at the Bowling Center on Peterson AFB, Colorado, Oct. 1.

According to Angela Lenn, 21st Medical Group Family Advocacy Program assistant, around 50 members from both Schriever and Peterson AFBs supported the bowling event.

Kim Lee Vehige, 21st Family Advocacy Program Intervention Specialist talked about the collaborative efforts to make the tournament a reality.

“The intent of the bowling tournament is to raise awareness that October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and to highlight resources available,” she said. “It’s also super fun and a great way to connect and collaborate in our communities, both at Peterson and Schriever. The Peterson FAP does all the organizing for the event, but Schriever Shirts and other Schriever personnel are our main supporters of the event.”

Jessica Ditson, 50th Space Wing Violence Prevention Integrator, defined ‘intimate partner violence,’ another term for domestic violence.

“Healthy relationships are vital,” she said. “Without a clear idea of what intimate partner violence can look like (emotional abuse, financial abuse, threats of physical violence, or sexual violence) it can be hard to intervene or identify the characteristics in a relationship you may be part of.”

According to The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, domestic violence is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community regardless of economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion or nationality.

“Domestic violence remains a very stigmatized and taboo subject that is still very underreported,” said Monica Ibarra, 21st Medical Group Family Advocacy Program intervention specialist. “Bringing awareness is important to help victims come forward. The Peterson AFB FAP is part of the 21st Medical Group at the Peterson AFB’s Mental Health Clinic. It also serves Schriever AFB and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station and works closely with their partners to ensure services are standardized.

“Building strong relationships with people is key for any program; we need to ensure a level of safety and comfort with Airmen, we know how important that is,” Ibarra said. “We get out to Schriever as often as we can for various activities, outreach, etc., to help build awareness for our program and foster relationships.”

Peterson AFB work together to support Airmen in the battle against domestic violence.

The FAP is working to get office space at Schriever so Airmen can have ease of access to their services. They expect to be present on base at least a few times each week, Ibarra said.

Ditson highlighted the importance of being a good Wingman and reminded help is available to those seeking to get out of a toxic relationship or those helping a loved one do the same.

“Make sure that your language and actions support an environment of trust and connection so people feel safe disclosing they need help,” she said. “Help them decide the best course of action and know leaving domestic violence situations can be very dangerous. You don’t have to do this alone, reach out to resources to support the next steps to safety.”

Ibarra explained FAP services are available for individuals (not just families) and they are completely confidential.

“Much like the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program, we do have a restricted reporting option for victims of domestic violence,” she said. “If there’s ever any question about disclosure obligations, an Airmen can always call us anonymously and ask hypothetical questions. It is very important to us that a victim has autonomy over the outcome of his/her own situation as much as possible.”

Schriever firefighters respond to Blaney Fire

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Schriever Fire Department sent two firefighters and a vehicle to combat the Blaney Road fire approximately five miles northwest of Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Sept. 30, 2019.

Jerry Quintana, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron lead firefighter, and Jacob Stratton, 50th CES firefighter provided support to the El Paso County fire suppression efforts.

With the fire spreading fast, and in response to a request for support, SFD dispatched two firefighters with a type 3 wildland pumper, one of 14 firefighting apparatuses on scene. Quintana said they were one of the first crews to respond and actively fought the fire for approximately four hours.

“All the firefighters were professional and

deserve the upmost respect.”

“We were assigned to the east flank of the fire,” he said.

“Several structures were involved and protected on our line. Fire crews remained at the fire overnight to mop up any remaining hot spots. Two structures were lost during the fire.”

Stratton said he had a feeling something was going to happen since Red Flag conditions were in effect that day from noon to 7 p.m., and was already thinking about moving quickly to get ahead of the fire.

Stratton said, the fire serves as a lesson about why it is important to have fire prevention practices in place.

“In this area, we experience high winds and dry weather from summer until about the start of winter,” he said. “If you are going to have a fire or burn, make sure you have water or some form of extinguisher available.”

“One life and several homes were saved during the emergency,” Quintana said. “It’s always a pleasure to serve the community in any way we can. All the firefighters were professional and deserve the upmost respect.”

According to Allen Perry, SFD deputy fire chief, the

department responds to approximately 220 calls each year and about 20 of those are to provide support to a local mutual-aid partner. SFD trains annually with local mutual-aid partners including Ellicott Fire Department, Falcon Fire Department, Colorado Springs Fire Department and El Paso County Fire Department, on a variety of fire prevention and suppression tactics.

Schriever Fire Department recognizes Fire Prevention Week

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Schriever Air Force Base Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association to promote Fire Prevention Week Oct. 6 — 12 through a variety of base and community educational events.

This year’s campaign theme, Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!, focuses on bringing awareness to the small, but important actions people can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

Statistics from NFPA show that U.S. fire departments responded to 357,000 home structure fires in 2017. These fires caused 2,630 fire-related deaths and 10,600 fire-related injuries. On average, seven people died in a home fire per day during 2012 to 2016.

“These numbers show that home fires continue to pose a significant threat to safety,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of outreach and advocacy. “In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out.”

Though NFPA and the Schriever AFB Fire Department are primarily focusing on home fires, the messages can apply to any location.

“Situational awareness is a skill people

need to use wherever they go,” said Brad Truver, Schriever AFB Fire Department assistant chief of fire prevention. “No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately.”
