CHRIEVER AIR FORCE, Colo. — Do-over. You’ve heard the phrase. Perhaps you’ve uttered it too, something along the lines of, “I wish I had a do-over.” It’s easy if one is playing golf, assuming fellow players are gracious and not too competitive. You just take a mulligan. It’s pretty easy in video games too. How often can one revive, resuscitate, reconstitute, retry?

However, in life outside of golf and video games, a do-over is a little more complicated than squawking, “Mulligan!” and proceeding to tee off as if nothing ever happened.

Life doesn’t usually work that way. Time is an arrow that only flies forward to the future and so we make choices and experience the consequences for better or worse. Sometimes our choices don’t have earth-shattering, unalterable effects. If I wake up in a fog and accidentally put on the wrong color undershirt for my uniform, I can probably get a doover without too much pain involved. I’d simply go home for lunch and change clothes. But, if I drive drunk and get pulled over and arrested, a do-over is tougher.

I might still have a career, but it may not be in the Air Force.

I remember words I said to my mother I wish I hadn’t spoken. One time I questioned the validity of my mother’s career.

Insensitive and hurtful comments from a semi-ignorant young adult, and a few seconds later Mom quite rightly put me in my place. I wish I could have done that over, but once the words fly out of the mouth they are carried away to be heard by anyone nearby.

Often we do that in relationships, say things we would like to take back but can’t, with an earful of consequences to follow. If it goes on long enough, it’s not just an earful of consequences, but divorce papers or a child who says goodbye for good.

So, what can be done when one needs a do-over? A life mulligan? It’s important to remember that although one cannot erase the past, the future is yet to be written. When we make mistakes we may live with the consequences, but there is still “future time” to put things in order, to make things right. We can write a new story that is good. And sometimes, that story can bring something good out of those past mistakes. Not strictly a do-over, but pretty close.

“Most often a do-over begins with us.”

When I was in Iraq in 2004, a master sergeant came to see me. He was not particularly religious. He said he had never talked with a chaplain before, though I had seen him in our chapel service the week before. Schriever hosts STEM day event for local students

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — More than 60 middle school students from James Irwin Charter Academy, Colorado Springs, attended a science, technology, engineering and mathematics event hosted by the 50th Space Wing Nov. 14 at the fitness center.

“It’s really exciting to get to share what we do here,” said Jan Devitt, 50th Space Wing community support coordinator. “Not a lot of people know about it.”

“Anything that exposes kids to new ideas broadens their minds and gives them the opportunity to see so many new things they can be involved in.”

The event included six different booths showcasing basic orbital mechanics, Newton’s laws, Kepler’s laws, virtual reality, how radio frequencies control satellites, send communications and more.

Col. Jack Fischer, 50th Space Wing vice commander, briefed the students about STEM and shared some of his experiences as an astronaut. “[Kids] are our future,” he said. “If we don’t inspire them to get into STEM and tackle those hard problems, we’re going to lose.

AF Connect available to Schriever

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Airmen stationed here have a new way to connect with leadership and each other through the Air Force Connect mobile app.

This official Air Force app, a 2018 Air Force Spark Tank product, affords wings, squadrons and units another option to disseminate essential information to Airmen and their families.

Schriever Airmen can enable push notifications to alert them to snow call and emergency notifications.

“We’re not going to be pushing notifications for just anything, we want to limit the use of this feature to specific events that might occur outside the normal duty day,” she said. “Snow call usually goes through Facebook, but with AF Connect the snow call updates also go through the notifications tab,” Contreras said. “Airmen will receive push notifications on their phone which will notify them of a delay or closure.”

Contreras also highlighted Connect groups feature, which allows Schriever Airmen to create, invite and interact with other Airmen.

“If the there is a commander’s call or an off-site lunch and the location or meeting time has changed, the commander can send a message out to their Airmen to notify them of this through groups,” she said. “A commander can also poll people’s preferences for events.”

Lt. Col. Timothy Ryan, 4th Space Operations Squadron commander, said he started using the AF Connect app while assigned to the Pentagon as a way to stay connected to the Air Force.

“At the time, I was on the joint staff and wasn’t on Air Force email lists,” Ryan said. “[AF Connect] has grown into a tool that I use for finding publications, especially

“The wing commander’s tab in the app allows Colonel Smith to post messages directly,” Contreras said. “He plans on using this feature regularly to communicate to the wing.”

Another feature of the app is to push notifications.

Another feature in the app is the ability to access the base’s social media sites.

“If you use social media, you can access any of the Schriever social media sites directly from the app,” Contreras said.

Other features within the app include a base phone directory, checklists and a base events calendar.

“We have all of our emergency information and resources, such as the Military Crisis Line there,” Contreras said. “We’re also going to put Eagle Eyes on the app.”

Family resource agencies, such as key spouses or the child development center, can manage their part of the app and update information as needed.

“This app is developing into more of a one-stop-shop for our Airmen, and now that the 50th Space Wing is on it, it is even more useful to us,” Ryan said. “From notifications, to medical information, PFT scores and news, it’s all there and it continues to grow.”

Secure cloud storage helps Airmen collaborate Staff Report 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Airmen here now have access to one terabyte of cloud storage and live collaboration thanks to the Air Force implementation of Microsoft OneDrive.

OneDrive allows Airmen to share and collaborate on documents with selected users and groups in real time through its integration with Microsoft Office 365 suite. The data follows Airmen wherever they go.

“A lot of people wanted to put files on the cloud,” Robert Fowler, 50th Space Communications Squadron operations branch chief, said. “[The purpose of OneDrive is] to free up the space on your work station [or let you access your files] if you [get permanent change of station orders] or [go on temporary deployment] to another base.”

A secure cloud service allows Airmen greater freedom to react to mission demands and maintain mobility without derailing other duties.

Fowler said the Defense Department OneDrive cloud is an IL5 environment, meaning it is authorized to contain controlled unclassified information (to include information classified as for official use only). Further information can be found in the “Department of Defense Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide,” dated March 2017.

Since the OneDrive desktop application will upload, update and synchronize documents automatically, Airmen will access the most up-to-date versions of any stored file. It also adds a level of information security as cloud backup can help prevent the loss of mission-critical documents.

“Once you’ve logged into it, after a day or two, it’s going to ask you to back things up to it — primarily what’s on your desktop — so your documents

and files are out there to follow you around wherever you go,” Fowler said.

Airmen can store and access almost any type of file 15 GB or smaller through this service. Exceptions include: mp3 audio files, mp4 video files and Microsoft Outlook data storage files due to bandwidth considerations.

Fowler said they’re still learning the additional functions of the system.

“We’re still trying to figure out all the great things you can do,” Fowler said. “We got a question [asking] if you could access it from home. Probably not; you’d have to use a VPN, [though] there is a web link, which was sent out base wide along with a tutorial slide deck.”

Fowler said there’s currently no solution for mobile devices because the system requires a common access card, or CAC, to access it.

However, 1st Lt. Kyle Kirchem said so far, OneDrive continues to run without problems.

“CFP hasn’t received one call or ticket reporting issues with OneDrive,” Kirchem said. “Only about 4 percent of (Air Force) users have configured OneDrive out of 470,000 who could access it.”

Scott Air Force Base, Illinois implemented the first phase of the program in 2018.

“One of the benefits of transitioning to cloud-based commercial services is that it not only allows us to take advantage of current offerings,” Markus Rogers, Air Force Network Integration Center executive director said. “It provides a foundation across the Air Force and Department of Defense to leverage future Microsoft Office 365 collaboration services.”

Airmen learn about risks of tobacco

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Optimal health and a functional lifestyle remain vital for any military member.

In Colorado Springs, Airmen have the opportunity to learn about the benefits of eliminating smoking from their lives.

The Great American Smokeout, an annual nationwide event hosted on the third Thursday of November, teaches people about the benefits of quitting tobacco.

“This event happens annually on the third Thursday of November and encourages smokers to quit smoking,” said Carol Carr, 21 Medical Squadron Health Promotion coordinator. “We know smoking has negative health effects and this is one day to help educate Airmen on those risks and provide resources to help them quit.”

Carr said though the Great American Smokeout is a short event, it’s helped previous participants who previously participated.

“Compared to last year, we have seen a reduction in smoking overall,” Carr said. “It is hard to say the full impact of a one-day event, but since (the first quarter) of 2019 until now smoking on (Schriever Air Force Base) is down half a percent.”

Those who quit smoking not only save money, but also reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.

According to information from the American Cancer Society, a smoker’s body recovers in several ways after they quit smoking.

Their research found: • 20 minutes after quitting, the body’s heart rate and blood pressure drops.

• After a year, the risk of coronary heart disease is half that of someone who continues to smoke; after 15 years, it drops to the level of a nonsmoker.

• Ten years after quitting, the risk of lung cancer is cut in half in half as well as larynx cancer and pancreatic cancer drop.

Some smokers switch from cigarettes to vaping, which also presents a challenge.

According to research from the Food and Drug Administration, some vaping products contain cannabidiol, or CBD. Though CBD use is legal in Colorado and 16 other states, Air Force personnel are prohibited from using the substance.

Capt. Kelly Fennell, 50th Space Wing Chief of Military Justice, said CBD isn’t well regulated and could contain tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. “We can’t guarantee when you purchase CBD that you’re not going to find the active ingredient in what we think of as marijuana, which is THC,” Fennell said. “If you test positive for THC, that’s obviously detrimental for your career.”

Carr understands most people require more than a promotion to quit smoking. Airmen can get help to quit smoking from their primary care manager, including various medications.

6 SOPS stays mission ready through rain, sleet, snow or hail

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 6th Space Operations Squadron provides meteorological data to civilian and military assets across the world and is an integral part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration operations.

Maj. Meagan Tovado, 6th SOPS assistant director of operations, said the unit is responsible for providing timely and efficient operational support to NOAA personnel, who maintain the primary operations center for the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program in the event they are unable.

DMSP is a satellite constellation that has a low Earth, retrograde polar orbit that circles the Earth roughly every 101 minutes. The satellite constellation provides meteorological and atmospheric data to government and civil agencies.

“We’re the backup operations center for the DSMP constellation,” said Maj. Cuyler Gembol, 6th SOPS flight commander of training. “We have a finite time from notification to take command.”

Being a back-up operations center means if NOAA operators lost control of the DSMP satellite constellation, the 6th SOPS would take full command and assume 24/7 operations. Additionally, Tovado said the unit maintains mission readiness through proficiency shifts by assuming control of the constellation twice a week with annual continuity of operations where they take full operational control for an extended period of time.

“To respond in a timely manner, dedicated Airmen in the unit are on a rotational on-call schedule and if anything were to happen, those Airmen are ready to report to the unit to take control of the constellation,” Tovado said.

Gembol said the primary users of information provided by the DMSP constellation are the 557th Weather Wing at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska and the Navy’s Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center at Monterey, California.

The contest, part of the Air Force’s arts and crafts program managed

by AFSVC, is open to all authorized patrons of Air Force morale, welfare and recreation programs.

“Creating art is a way for people to reduce stress and build resiliency,” said Darlene Johnson, AFSVC community and leisure branch chief.

“Our main inspiration for the contest is to build an avenue for our Airmen and families to showcase their artwork.”

Schriever Airmen see benefits from 28-day sleep challenge

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — With the myriad of tasks required of Airmen each day, getting adequate sleep proves challenging, but that doesn’t make it any less important to get the proper amount of rest.

The 28-day sleep challenge, hosted by the 21st Medical Squadron, took place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 30 and illustrated several ways to improve sleep habits and how to get appropriate rest.

“It teaches Airmen the basics of sleep hygiene and gives them tools to improve their sleep on their own,” said Carol Carr, 21st Medical Squadron Health Promotion coordinator.

“Sleep is an ongoing issue in society and the Air Force. Poor sleep leads to poor health and performance. The goal of this sleep challenge was to take the time to stop and focus on sleep so one can create healthy sleep habits.”

Carr said Airmen reported the challenge was useful.

“Thus far we have piloted it in the 21st, MDS and from surveys saw increased knowledge on how to optimize sleep and improvements in length of time spent sleeping (at least seven hours is recommended and this was achieved by most),” Carr said. “We hope to see further data and impacts next quarter when more data is analyzed.”

Sleep deprivation not only impacts people short term, it also affects health in the long term.

Lt. Col. Timothy Ryan, 4th Space Operation Squadron commander, realizes how sleep deprivation influences Airmen and continues to work to balance their sleep schedules.

“Starting Oct. 1, we adjusted our crew schedule,” Ryan said. “Each crew is working a 60-day rotation on the same schedule. After 60 days, they rotate to the next shift and we are doing this in six-month increments.”

Ryan understands providing a stable and predictable schedule improves the crew’s focus and ability do their work accurately.

“The goal is to provide the crews stabilization in their sleep schedule, as well as their personal schedule,” Ryan said. “This is providing a predictable and repeatable schedule for the operators during their space mission force rotation. This is backed by the Human Performance Wing report and the Iron Project report (conducted at Buckley Air Force Base, Colo.) that stated the crew’s sleep schedule is optimized when they are pulling the same shift for at least 30 days straight.”

While Ryan doesn’t currently have data about 4th SOPS crew schedule changes, Carr said additional information for the 28-day sleep challenge will be available soon.

“We do not have full data yet to show its long-term benefits, but Airmen reported better quality sleep post intervention,” Carr said.

“This is especially important for shift workers who already had struggles with sleep.”

He was taking stock of his life and realized he needed to change. We talked about a fresh start, what that looked like, what it might take to make amends, to heal the wounds of the past, what part faith in God might play in that new beginning, etc. We prayed and he left for home the next day.

I sometimes wonder if she was there when he arrived and if they were able to reconcile, if his resolve to change remained steadfast. I know it is possible and I hope that his do-over produced a life of good for himself and his family.

Most often a do-over begins with us. Sometimes that is an apology for something said or done. Sometimes it involves making amends to those we wronged. Realizing sometimes we need a do-over can make us a bit more sympathetic and forgiving when a person wrongs us and wants to make things right. If we were all perfect, we would never need do-overs. This kind of perspective goes a long way to make relationships do more than just work, but make them good.

So, let’s go golfing. I’ll give you plenty of mulligans and I hope you’ll do the same for me.

Schriever takes impaired driving seriously

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — As the holiday season approaches, it’s important while Airmen celebrate to remember driving under the influence has many repercussions and for Airmen those consequences can be serious.

Drinking and driving affects more than just the driver, it jeopardizes the safety of other families and any passengers in the vehicle. Capt. Kelly Fennell, 50th Space Wing chief of military justice, said the 50th SW Judge Advocate office offers legal assistance to Airmen involved in civil matters including alcohol-related motor vehicle incidents.

The impact of receiving a DUI goes beyond administrative punishment, it can also affect an Airman’s financial status.

“Receiving a DUI can have a hefty fine attached to it and too much debt can have [negative] implications [when it comes to] a security clearance,” said Senior Master Sgt. Kathy Blake, 50th Comptroller Squadron and Wing Staff Agencies superintendent. “When you’re saturated in debt, it can [affect your] quality of life, too. [With this added debt] you may fall behind on rent and bills, and financial irresponsibility is a real problem.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the annual cost of alcohol-related crashes is more than $44 billion. Additionally, insurance companies can refuse to provide coverage to anyone who caused an alcoholrelated motor vehicle accident as the cause would be considered negligent, Fennell said.

“A DUI can be extremely stressful,” Blake said. “Once you add the financial consequences and the possible jail time associated with it, it can ruin your life. It’s not worth the risk.

If you’re drinking utilize the many resources available to avoid drinking and driving. Be smart.”

Staff Sgt. Robert Cook, 50th Space Wing noncommissioned officer in charge of occupational safety, said driving impaired directly contradicts the core values and the whole Airman concept.

“Driving drunk affects our credibility as Airmen and it is completely selfish,” he said. “How are we displaying integrity, placing service above ourselves and being excellent if we’re driving while impaired?”

According to the CDC, every 50 minutes in the United States, someone dies in an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident, that’s about 29 people a day.

“Don’t do it,” Cook said. “It’s so easy to prevent. It can ruin your career, it’s not worth it. Alcohol impairs the mind and affects decision making, no matter how fine you think you may be, play it safe. Get a taxi or have a friend give you a ride.”

“There are many consequences associated with drinking and driving,” she said. “If found guilty of driving while impaired, Airmen are likely to lose driving privileges on the installation. It does not matter where the DUI occurred.”

Any military punishment associated with driving while impaired is determined by the Airman’s commander.

“Punishments often include administrative paperwork, forfeiture of pay, loss of rank, extra duties and even discharge,” she said. “The maximum punishment associated with receiving a DUI, if you injure another person, is a dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of pay and confinement for 18 months.”

Discipline related to drinking and driving is highlighted under Article 113 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, drunken or reckless operation of a vehicle, aircraft or vessel. However, punishments are not limited to Article 113 as civilian courts can levy charges as well.

“I would highly encourage self-reporting to [the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Program] to receive help expeditiously,” Fennell said. “Not only does drinking and driving have career implications but you’re taking other people’s lives in your hands and putting them

ARTICLE 1 – SAFB QRP:

1. SAFB QRP seeks bids for an indefinite quantity of Scrap Metal (Post-Consumer) over a period of 24 months.

Commodity Description: Light Iron No. 2 Insulated Copper Wire Lead Acid Batteries 2. Quantity: Multiple loads consisting of various weights depending on commodities as determined by SAFB QRP and the roll-off size provided by the Purchaser. SAFB QRP has complete discretion concerning which Scrap Metal will be sold/purchased.

3. SAFB QRP will notify the Purchaser when Scrap Metal is ready for pick-up. Securing the load is the sole responsibility of the Purchaser and/or his/her agent.

4. According to its sole discretion, SAFB QRP reserves the right to reject bids as non-responsive. Any potential Purchaser’s bid may be deemed non-responsive for reasons including, but not limited to, failure of the Purchaser’s bid to conform to this solicitation, the Purchaser’s previous failure to conform to safety or environmental requirements, the Purchaser’s previous or current indebtedness to the Federal Government, or previous acts of negligence or misconduct on behalf of the Purchaser related to the their performance of a SAFB QRP sales agreement or other agreement with an agency of the Federal Government.

ARTICLE II - Purchaser:

1. Specifications: The Purchaser agrees to pick-up Scrap Metal as determined by SAFB QRP, according to the following specifications: Mixed Scrap Metal: (unprocessed/un-shredded) for a Two (2) Year Solicitation Period Agreement Period Date: 15 Nov 2019 to 14 Nov 2021 The Purchaser agrees to place empty roll-offs at SAFB, at no additional cost to the Government, for each load shipment as follows: 40 Cubic Yard Open Top Roll-Off at Bldg. 613 (CE Recycling Yard) 35 Cubic Yard Open Top Roll-Off at Bldg. 720 (SW Corner) 10 Cubic Yard (minimum) Covered Roll-Off at Bldg. 720 (SW Corner) 48 Foot Flatbed Trailer(or similar) at Bldg. 650 (Heavy Equipment Parking Area) Roll-offs and/or trailer provided by the Purchaser shall be numbered for tracking purposes. Purchaser agrees to switch out rolloffs and/or trailer within five (5) business days of verbal notification that previous roll-offs and/or trailer are full and ready for pick up.

The Purchaser agrees to provide transportation related to the pickup and/or shipment of Scrap Metal. Transportation charges shall be deducted from payment owed to SAFB QRP.

2. Prices: Bid prices will only be accepted based on percentage of American Metal Market (AMM) Index Price (IP) on the first week publication of current month shipment is ready. The IP is the most recently published prices in the first week, starting Sunday, of the current month displayed in the AMM; in the event more than one reported price is listed, the highest reported price shall be used to determine the IP. Documentation verifying AMM IP for the relevant publication period must be submitted along-side payment. In the event that AMM ceases to publish the IP, SAFB QRP shall, in good faith, agree to a substitute report or index of comparable industry recognition that reasonably reflects changes the price.

3. Modifications: Modification of any terms of this solicitation will make Purchaser response nonconforming and eliminate it from consideration. Further, SAFB QRP acknowledges that individual pricing information provided by Purchaser will remain proprietary and confidential.

4. Transportation: The Purchaser and/or Transportation Agent (hereto referred as Purchaser) shall be required to provide and maintain during the entire period of this contract, at least the motor vehicle liability and bodily injury insurance as required by State and local laws. The Purchaser must coordinate at a minimum 48 hours in advance before SAFB access. The Purchaser must be able to obtain access to SAFB and the Restricted Area (RA) within SAFB. For access to SAFB, the Purchaser must possess a valid driver’s license, insurance and registration of vehicle. The Purchaser must request, obtain, and properly use vehicle passes for all vehicles used in the performance of this contract, in accordance with AFMAN 31-116, Air Force Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision. For access to SAFB RA, the Purchaser must provide two (2) forms of government issued photo identification. When inside the RA, the Purchaser must, at all times, display RA visitor badges on their outer garments above the waist. Return RA badges immediately upon departure from the RA to Security Forces. Incidents of a person not properly displaying badges or violating escort procedures (e.g. working out of view of escort) shall be treated as a breach of security and shall be susceptible to apprehension, search and detainment. Any person inside the RA without a RA badge will be detained or apprehended, searched, removed, and turned over to appropriate authorities for disposition. The installation commander reserves the right to deny entry to SAFB to any person whose background is unfavorable or upon disclosure of information that indicates the individual’s continued entry to SAFB is not in the best interest of the US AF. The Purchaser agrees that its vehicles, baggage, or articles shall be subject to search by law enforcement authorities at any time upon entry to and while on SAFB. 5. Spills: The Purchaser and/or Transportation Agent (hereto referred as Purchaser) shall be responsible for any spills/leaks resulting from their work while on SAFB and agrees to expeditiously cleanup all spills /leaks to the satisfaction of the SAFB Spill Response designee and in compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations. The cleanup shall be at no cost to the Government and the Purchaser agrees to hold the Government harmless and indemnify the Government for any costs incurred as a result of or incidental to, any handling, removal, transportation, storage, treatment or disposal of Scrap Metal performed by the Purchaser.

In the case of imminent health and safety dangers, the Government reserves the right to take immediate action to contain and minimize a spill. Upon such action by the Government, the Purchaser shall reimburse the Government for costs incurred upon submission of an actual costs bill. In the event of a spill/leakage the Purchaser may request support from the installation on a cost reimbursable basis. All spill/leakage incidents must be reported immediately to QRP Manager 719-567-3910 or 719-567-4028.

ARTICLE III:

1. Default: If the Purchaser fails to pay for and/or remove Scrap Metal offered for sale herein within the time allowed by the agreement, SAFB QRP will send the Purchaser a written 10 day notice of default (calculated from the date of mailing), and upon Purchaser’s failure to cure such default within the period, the Purchaser shall lose all rights, title, and interest which he may otherwise have acquired in and to such Scrap Metal as to which a default has occurred. SAFB QRP may suspend permission to remove Scrap Metal from the QRP site until the Purchaser cures any above described default.

Hours of Operation: 0800-1600 Monday-Friday; closed on all Federal Holidays.

2. Indemnification: Purchaser agrees to hold and save harmless at all times the United States (including SAFB QRP, its agents, representative, and employees) against any and all claims, demands, suits, judgments, costs, charges, and expenses arising out of or in connection with any loss, damage or injury resulting from the negligence or other fault of the purchaser, its agents, representatives, and employees. The purchaser will release the Government and SAFB QRP from any and all liability.

Each roll-off picked up from SAFB shall be weighed on Purchaser’s scale. Weight ticket shall be provided to SAFB QRP Manager within thirty (30) business days from pick-up.

3. The Purchaser agrees to conform to all State, Federal, and local laws and regulations in the processing, sale, and disposal of Scrap Metal received.
