CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — I want to ensure our Airmen know what the 50th Space Wing legal office can do to help them. Our goal is to make sure they are focused on the mission and not worried about legal or personal matters. Kellie Lindemann, 50th SW legal assistant, offers some sound advice on legal documents.

Last will and testaments, living wills, advance medical directives, general powers of attorney

As military members, we are tasked to deploy and leave our families or loved ones. During preparation for deployment, we are advised to have our will and additional legal documents prepared prior to departure. I stand behind that thought process, but why wait? The best time to think about what you may want to say in your will is when you aren’t worrying about an upcoming deployment and how your family is going to adjust while you are gone.

We never know what tomorrow will bring. Whether it’s a deployment or unexpected life change, being prepared is a good idea. Talk with your loved ones about your personal decisions and choices. There’s nothing harder than trying to figure out what a family member would have wanted when they can no longer tell you.

When I became a paralegal and mentioned these things to my grandfather years ago, he wanted nothing to do with them. He believed if he created these documents it meant he was going to die. My grandmother finally convinced him they really needed to have them to be Whether it’s a deployment or unexpected life change, prepared when the time came and either or both of them passed on. My grandmother has since passed and my Papa, who thought he would die if he completed those documents back in 2007, is still living and will be 98 soon. Schriever Command Chief hosts senior enlisted leader summit

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Senior enlisted leaders from across Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, attended a summit Nov. 6-7 to learn from one another and to discuss and dissect issues facing Schriever Airmen and how best to tackle them.

Chief Master Sgt. Boston Alexander, 50th Space Wing command chief and host of the event, charged each senior noncommissioned officer in attendance to be bold leaders, and to focus on taking care of their Airmen, the Air Force’s most valuable weapon system.

“It’s up to you as senior enlisted leaders to charge that weapon system,” he said. “It’s about being eyeball to eyeball with your Airmen and communicating with them and understanding them. Be the kind of leaders to these Airmen that you’d want for the most important people in your life.”

The event consisted of information briefs, as well as panels filled with subject matter experts from various base helping agencies, to squadron commanders and junior enlisted Airmen.

The SNCOs were able to openly discuss shortfalls and concerns with members of the panels,

and work together to determine the best ways forward.

“Making connections with other [senior enlisted leaders] sitting in key positions is probably one of the most important takeaways from these types of events,” said Senior Master Sgt. Matthew Voorhees, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron superintendent. “Connections with the junior enlisted tier and things that are impacting their work centers or quality of life is another, possibly more important, takeaway for those of us who sit in key positions because things that are impacting their ability to execute on a daily basis doesn’t always make it to us for action.”

Attendees learned some of the intricacies and unique challenges space Airmen can face regularly, and also had the opportunity to have an expectation management conversation directly with the wing commander.

our Airmen both up and down the chain,” said Col. James Smith, 50th SW commander. “I’m looking forward to the ideas you all come up with to strengthen those connections, protect our mission so we can project space effects now and well into the future.”

The junior enlisted airmen panel garnered the most positive feedback as they provided candid accounts of what they are looking for from their leaders, what their leaders are doing well and how they could improve.

“These Airmen are smarter and more articulate than any of us were at that time in our careers,” Alexander said. “If we want to continue to have the best Airmen, to be the best Air Force and the best nation in the world, this is where we invest our time and our energy — into these Airmen.”

Each iteration of the summit has included more Team Schriever members, and Alexander said he has already started his plans for the next summit, stressing the importance of SNCOs learning from one another to grow Airmen and continue to bolster the lethality of the space mission.

“We are the absolute best at what we do, and our adversaries know it,” he said. “I am proud, honored and humbled to serve with each of you.”

Airmen to celebrate Thanksgiving, stay resilient

SCHREIVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — For a lot of people, Thanksgiving is a holiday that encourages families to gather and celebrate together, however that can be challenging for Airmen living in the dorms.

Airman 1st Class Katie Naquin, 50th Force Support Squadron customer service journeyman, said she understands the struggles of distance from family during Thanksgiving.

Forming connections and having people to relate with helps

Airmen stay resilient.

“Being away from home can be challenging for Airmen because that means being separated from your family,” she said. “The focus is really on family [during] a holiday like Thanksgiving, so the separation is really emphasized.”

Being proactive and thinking of different ways to celebrate Thanksgiving can help Airmen enjoy the holiday while away from home. Participating in a “Friendsgiving,” a term commonly used to describe a Thanksgiving meal with friends, can help homesick Airmen have fun during the holiday.

“A Friendsgiving can absolutely boost morale,” Naquin said. “It’s what I’m doing this year. It takes what could otherwise be a reminder of distance between you and your loved ones, and turns it into a fun holiday spent with friends.”

Airman 1st Class Jad Arcega, 50th FSS customer service journeyman, also thinks spending time with other Airmen on the holiday can be beneficial.

“For Airmen living in the dorms, hosting more morale events with their fellow Airmen [can help each other] stay positive and distract them from thoughts of being away from home,” he said.

A lot of Airmen may be far from their families for the first time, so reaching out and getting involved in their new community can help ease the transition.

It’s important to build connections with others, especially during the holidays, because we’re all essentially in the same situation,” Arcega said.

Additionally, staying connected opens the door to forming lasting relationships and allows Airmen to create a family away from home.

“It is important for Airmen to [form bonds] with each other because often times, your coworkers will be the backbone of your local support system,” Naquin said. “You never know where you’re going to end up in the military, but there is definitely a bond formed with your fellow Airmen through shared experiences. Even if something is bad, there’s [going to be] at least one other person who can relate.”

Forming connections and having people to relate with helps Airmen stay resilient, especially when feeling homesick around Thanksgiving.

“By being resilient, you can overcome whatever the holiday season throws at you,” she said. “Resilience can make you more flexible so that even if the holiday isn’t exactly what you’re used to, you can roll with it and make the best of what you’re given.”

The dorm council is scheduled to host a Thanksgiving dinner in the Building 1158 Voyager Hall first floor dayroom at Peterson Air Force Base at 3 p.m., Nov. 15. Free food will be provided by the Peterson AFB Key Spouses Group. Airmen living in the dorms are encouraged to come eat, play games and socialize with other Airmen.

Team Schriever recognizes Veterans Day heritage

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice was signed, marking the end of World War I. The day later was recognized as a holiday, which would eventually become Veterans Day. James Mesco, 50th Space Wing historian, is a retired Air Force master sergeant whose father served in World War II and was part of the invasion on the beaches of Normandy June 6, 1944.

“Remember all who have served and the sacrifices they have made.”

“Serving is more than putting a uniform on,” he said.

“Service is about putting others before yourself, it’s about keeping our way of life preserved and protecting our future generations.”

Although a beacon of hope globally, the United States is still targeted by adversaries across the world. Despite the horrors associated with war, men and women have answered their nation’s call and responded bravely to tragic events. The bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Dec. 7, 1941 that killed more than 2,400 Americans and the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks that killed more than 2,900 innocent people among them.

“Every job, whether a cook, cop, admin clerk or pilot — every single person serving is supporting the mission and creating a stronger and more capable military,” he said. “[Every service member] has a requirement to be ready to go wherever and whenever the military deems necessary. Everyone — enlisted, officers and civilians, contribute to the overall mission.”

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, there are currently 19.6 million veterans in the United States.

“Veterans provide a much needed voice to our leaders,” he said. “When you have people who’ve seen how hor-

Originally recognized as Armistice Day May 13, 1938, President Dwight Eisenhower renamed Armistice Day to Veterans Day June 1, 1954. Veterans Day became a day to recognize everyone who has served in the military.

“Remember all who have served and the sacrifices they have made,” he said. “A lot of those serving have made the sacrifices for our country.”

Senior Airman Denis Rodriguez Escobar, 50th Comptroller Squadron financial operations technician and immigrant, said he is thankful for the opportunities the United States provides.

“The United States has done so much for me and my family,” he said. “Serving goes far beyond wearing a uniform. To me, it’s all about giving back to the country that’s already given so much to me.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Operations Support Squadron is holding its largest class to train 64 space operators.

This is in response to the new officer undergraduate space training and enlisted space training courses being taught at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

“The new course will provide a base-level foundation for space operators,” Master Sgt. Carl White, 50th Operations Support Squadron operations support flight chief said. “The course is constantly evolving alongside our mission to ensure we can better meet the needs of the Air Force.”

Airman 1st Class Justin Thomas, 50th OSS student, is currently enrolled in the initial qualification training course. He said he believes the new course is the future of educating space operators.

The course started Nov. 5 and is expected to send Airmen to the 2nd Space Operations Squadron and the 4th SOPS upon the student’s graduation April 15, 2020.

The 50th OSS is scheduled to receive students with this new training in February to April, when they will be enrolled into classes to teach them the specific mission systems they will operate at here.

In an effort to maximize force effectiveness, White said the career field is specializing training to best fit the needs of the Air Force.

“The course will assess Airmen’s strengths and weaknesses and assign them to units that match their strengths,” he said. “We’re warfighter driven and by doing this we’re able to make sure our warfighters are assigned to units they’re most qualified.”

Thomas is enrolled in the largest class the OSS has ever had and said he believes he is receiving the necessary training to successfully operate and execute the mission.

The OSS is temporarily not receiving new students until Airmen who went through the new OUST and EUST courses arrive here. However, the 50th OSS’ training with its current implementation of IQT will continue to be rigorous in developing space warfighters.

“Our coursework covers multiple avenues from the basics of squadron authority to specifics on a weapons

system,” Thomas said. “That’s only a peek at what the written course covers. The physical and simulator side of the course covers realistic training that challenges us with real life scenarios as well as providing the necessary knowledge on how to combat them or perform their basic task while on crew.”

Despite the changes made to training, the 50th OSS will evolve space and cyberspace warfighting superiority to continue to shape and train space warfighters to keep the United States, it’s assets and allies safe.

Schriever is operating a base shuttle service on a trial basis through Friday. ARTICLE 1 – SAFB QRP:

1. SAFB QRP seeks bids for an indefinite quantity of Scrap Metal (PostConsumer) over a period of 24 months.

Commodity Description: Light Iron No. 2 Insulated Copper Wire Lead Acid Batteries 2.

Quantity: Multiple loads consisting of various weights depending on commodities as determined by SAFB QRP and the roll-off size provided by the Purchaser. SAFB QRP has complete discretion concerning which Scrap Metal will be sold/purchased.

SAFB QRP will notify the Purchaser when Scrap Metal is ready for pick-up. Securing the load is the sole responsibility of the Purchaser and/or his/her agent.

According to its sole discretion, SAFB QRP reserves the right to reject bids as non-responsive. Any potential Purchaser’s bid may be deemed non-responsive for reasons including, but not limited to, failure of the Purchaser’s bid to conform to this solicitation, the Purchaser’s previous failure to conform to safety or environmental requirements, the Purchaser’s previous or current indebtedness to the Federal Government, or previous acts of negligence or misconduct on behalf of the Purchaser related to the their performance of a SAFB QRP sales agreement or other agreement with an agency of the Federal Government.

ARTICLE II - Purchaser:

1. Specifications: The Purchaser agrees to pick-up Scrap Metal as determined by SAFB QRP, according to the following specifications:

Mixed Scrap Metal: (unprocessed/un-shredded) for a Two (2) Year Solicitation Period Agreement Period Date: 15 Nov 2019 to 14 Nov 2021 The Purchaser agrees to place empty roll-offs at SAFB, at no additional cost to the Government, for each load shipment as follows: 40 Cubic Yard Open Top Roll-Off at Bldg. 613 (CE Recycling Yard) 35 Cubic Yard Open Top Roll-Off at Bldg. 720 (SW Corner) 10 Cubic Yard (minimum) Covered Roll-Off at Bldg. 720 (SW Corner) 48 Foot Flatbed Trailer(or similar) at Bldg. 650 (Heavy Equipment Parking Area) Roll-offs and/or trailer provided by the Purchaser shall be numbered for tracking purposes. Purchaser agrees to switch out roll-offs and/or trailer within five (5) business days of verbal notification that previous roll-offs and/or trailer are full and ready for pick up. The Purchaser agrees to provide transportation related to the pick-up and/or shipment of Scrap Metal. Transportation charges shall be deducted from payment owed to SAFB QRP. Hours of Operation: 0800-1600 Monday-Friday; closed on all Federal Holidays.

Each roll-off picked up from SAFB shall be weighed on Purchaser’s scale. Weight ticket shall be provided to SAFB QRP Manager within thirty (30) business days from pick-up.

Prices: Bid prices will only be accepted based on percentage of American Metal Market (AMM) Index Price (IP) on the first week publication of current month shipment is ready. The IP is the most recently published prices in the first week, starting Sunday, of the current month displayed in the AMM; in the event more than one reported price is listed, the highest reported price shall be used to determine the IP. Documentation verifying AMM IP for the relevant publication period must be submitted along-side payment. In the event that AMM ceases to publish the IP, SAFB QRP shall, in good faith, agree to a substitute report or index of comparable industry recognition that reasonably reflects changes the price.

Modifications: Modification of any terms of this solicitation will make Purchaser response nonconforming and eliminate it from consideration. Further, SAFB QRP acknowledges that individual pricing information provided by Purchaser will remain proprietary and confidential.

4.

Transportation: The Purchaser and/or Transportation Agent (hereto referred as Purchaser) shall be required to provide and maintain during the entire period of this contract, at least the motor vehicle liability and bodily injury insurance as required by State and local laws. The Purchaser must coordinate at a minimum 48 hours in advance before SAFB access. The Purchaser must be able to obtain access to SAFB and the Restricted Area (RA) within SAFB. For access to SAFB, the Purchaser must possess a valid driver’s license, insurance and registration of vehicle. The Purchaser must request, obtain, and properly use vehicle passes for all vehicles used in the performance of this contract, in accordance with AFMAN 31-116, Air Force Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision. For access to SAFB RA, the Purchaser must provide

two (2) forms of government issued photo identification. When inside the RA, the Purchaser must, at all times, display RA visitor badges on their outer garments above the waist. Return RA badges immediately upon departure from the RA to Security Forces. Incidents of a person not properly displaying badges or violating escort procedures (e.g. working out of view of escort) shall be treated as a breach of security and shall be susceptible to apprehension, search and detainment. Any person inside the RA without a RA badge will be detained or apprehended, searched, removed, and turned over to appropriate authorities for disposition. The installation commander reserves the right to deny entry to SAFB to any person whose background is unfavorable or upon disclosure of information that indicates the individual’s continued entry to SAFB is not in the best interest of the US AF. The Purchaser agrees that its vehicles, baggage, or articles shall be subject to search by law enforcement authorities at any time upon entry to and while on SAFB. Spills: The Purchaser and/or Transportation Agent (hereto referred as Purchaser) shall be responsible for any spills/leaks resulting from their work while on SAFB and agrees to expeditiously cleanup all spills / leaks to the satisfaction of the SAFB Spill Response designee and in compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations. The cleanup shall be at no cost to the Government and the Purchaser agrees to hold the Government harmless and indemnify the Government for any costs incurred as a result of or incidental to, any handling, removal, transportation, storage, treatment or disposal of Scrap Metal performed by the Purchaser. In the case of imminent health and safety dangers, the Government reserves the right to take immediate action to contain and minimize a spill. Upon such action by the Government, the Purchaser shall reimburse the Government for costs incurred upon submission of an actual costs bill. In the event of a spill/leakage the Purchaser may request support from the installation on a cost reimbursable basis. All spill/leakage incidents must be reported immediately to QRP Manager 719-567-3910 or 719-567-4028.

ARTICLE III:

1. Default: If the Purchaser fails to pay for and/or remove Scrap Metal offered for sale herein within the time allowed by the agreement, SAFB QRP will send the Purchaser a written 10 day notice of default (calculated from the date of mailing), and upon Purchaser’s failure to cure such default within the period, the Purchaser shall lose all rights, title, and interest which he may otherwise have acquired in and to such Scrap Metal as to which a default has occurred. SAFB QRP may suspend permission to remove Scrap Metal from the QRP site until the Purchaser cures any above described default.
