Schriever to take initial steps toward

NORMALCY

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — After two months of prevention protocols and restricted access, Schriever leaders are looking to phase in a removal of restrictions in a safe, secure manner.

“We have been working hard to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and we continue to do that; however, we need to find a balance between those prevention measures and increasing both our mission support posture and Airman resiliency,” said Col. Jim Smith, 50th Space Wing commander.

Officials are suggesting the coronavirus is likely to be a cyclic concern for the foreseeable future challenging military and civilian leaders’ ability to return to normal.

“All the predictions are no vaccine for upwards of a year, so that means we’ve got to refine our ability to survive and operate and do the missions the nation require[s],” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein said in a conference call with reporters Apr. 22. “And we’ve got to bring back those missions that we slowed down, so we can get back to some kind of a sense of new normalcy in an abnormal world.”

Leaders across the installation have been developing the recovery plans for weeks along with triggers required to be met before initial steps could be taken.

“Some of the primary things we needed to occur before we could move forward with any type of recovery was for the local stay-at-home order to be lifted, the average rate of infection for the local area to be in a steady decline and the local medical facilities being able to treat all patients,” said Col. Jack Fischer, 50th SW vice commander and Crisis Action Team director. “We’ve met those criteria and we’re ready to bring back our teammates. We’ve missed them and we need them to help us continue to take the fight to the enemy.”

“We need everyone to be all-in on this prevention measure so we can get back to work.”

Despite relaxation of some restrictions, many critical aspects of the current COVID-19 prevention posture remain in effect. First and foremost, vulnerable/most at risk members will continue to telework. Additionally, the operations floors remain restricted to those required to conduct operations. The dining facility will remain take out only. Work centers will continue telework plans/schedules as their missions allow.

While accounting for these restrictions, supervisors and commanders will coordinate limited return to work options including rotating shifts to return the force while maintaining physical distancing. Gatherings of no more than 10 people are allowed, as long as participants engage six feet of physical distancing. The fitness center and some commercial activities such as the barber shop and Dunkin Donuts will reopen with strict physical distancing and increased cleaning protocols. The Child Development Center will reopen to mission essential personnel, also with appropriate safeguards and cleaning protocols.

“We know personnel are anxious to get back to normal.

I am too,” said Smith. “But we’re not there yet and that’s important for all of us to remember as we step through this recovery plan. The threat is real and we must continue to take the prevention measures seriously. I thank you in advance for your continued patience and adherence to this new guidance.”

Unit leadership and supervisors should contact individual teams to define what their unique schedules will be in this recovery phase.

“I’m very interested in ensuring everyone understands their status and role as we move forward while taking the necessary precautions to protect our team and our missions,” said Smith. “Communication is critical, so please communicate any unique circumstances you have so we can make adjustments as needed.”

Officials have established what next steps will look like as well as what could require a step back.

“We don’t want to have to go back but we are prepared to be more restrictive should the situation change or people not adhere to prevention measures,” said Fischer. “We need everyone to be all-in on this prevention measure so we can get back to work. I ask for your support so we can punch COVID in the face.”

EW CASTLE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Del. — I am a follower and I aspire to be a great follower! That is probably something that you don’t often hear from individuals in leadership roles, but it holds true for me. Nevertheless, I believe that we must maintain being followers because it characterizes how we lead.

From a military posture perspective, the relationship between being a subordinate, manager, and leader is widely understood and recognized across the Air National Guard. A great deal of time is put into our understanding of the Enlisted Force Structure and Air Force standards. For us, as Noncommissioned Officers developing our leadership skills enhances our management toolbox. Development in this area, both in official and personal settings, also increases the prospect of improved performance as we proceed through the ranks. Learning from the bottom up is what we do, and we preach leadership early and often to our junior enlisted.

Coincidently, while we spend a considerable amount of time developing our leadership skills, one essential element of leadership is often neglected, following!

From my perspective, being a great follower is grossly

overlooked, but it is vital to becoming a successful leader in today’s Air Force. Followers within our ranks are just as crucial as the leaders. Much of what it takes to be a great leader, a great follower also exhibits. It takes humility, a willingness to serve, unselfishness, and dedication to be a great follower. A great follower not only gets the job done, but they also influence their leaders. Therefore, understanding the qualities of being a great follower matters. With that being said, enhancing followership

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron’s Outdoor Recreation continues to revamp its day-to-day operations after COVID-19 forced them temporarily to readjust their mission.

The virus suspended numerous scheduled activities including skiing, snowboarding, kayaking and trips to parks.

However, ODR moved their engraving and framing services online April 13 to assist Airmen.

“The online process provides ODR the ability to complete its mission while practicing

physical distancing guidelines.”

With appreciation to the Pikes Peak Community Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund, Mt. Carmel is equipped to provide TeleHealth (live video interactive mental health services) remote therapy sessions during this turbulent time.

“We’re still here to help the Airmen,” said Juli Yim, 50th FSS Outdoor Recreation director. “We’ve started bringing back some of our operations and we’re currently doing framing and engravings.”

Rather than have Airmen enter their facility and risk potential contamination of COVID-19, Outdoor Recreation is using its website to complete orders.

“We know a lot of people have done some amazing work while we’ve had to stay at home,” she said. “We’re trying to get those accomplishments engraved for the recipients so we can get those back to the units and they can recognize some of those achievements with an actual, tangible award.”

The online process provides ODR the ability to complete its mission

while practicing physical distancing guidelines.

“People have been submitting orders, we’ve gotten good contact info and we’re able to contact them and set up times to meet with them,” Yim said. “And we’re not putting our personnel at risk and [the customer] is getting their product.”

Wendy DeRosier, 50th FSS Outdoor recreation assistant, works on the engravings and framings for Airmen and customers to collect.

“I’m able to call my vendors and order stuff and go to the mail room and pick it up and take it to the warehouse where the engraving and picture framing equipment are located,” DeRosier said. “It’s not the same without someone walking into the store and maybe doing a little impulse buying, but everything else is going well.”

Creating products for customers also remains timely as DeRosier said she completes most orders in two weeks.

“It depends on if it’s in stock or if I have to order it,” she said. “Even though some vendors closed some of their warehouses, I still get requests in a swift manner.”

While ODR enjoys providing memorabilia and engravings to Airmen, they’re hoping to offer outdoor recreation services again soon. For now, Yim said they’re playing it by ear.

“I’ve been in contact with a number of other outdoor recreation facilities throughout the world,” Yim said. “We’re all able to communicate and that’s been good. We’re missing being able to be there and help support people and all that fun stuff. For now, we’re doing online orders so people can go to the 50th FSS website to get those.”

50th CPTS stays mission ready despite pandemic

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Comptroller Squadron operates their mission daily to ensure Schriever Airmen have the highest quality of customer service possible, even during a pandemic, The unit’s Airmen wear masks and maintain social distancing while in the office to minimize the risk of spreading or contracting COVID-19.

“We’re 100 percent on board with all of our services,” said Master Sgt. Jonathan Mollison, 50th CPTS superintendent.

“Our job is to provide world-class customer support and that’s exactly what the team’s been doing.”

The team supports Airmen from the start when they in-process the base, to ensure they get paid properly and process their travel vouchers in addition to providing budget analysis among many other tasks.

“When a new member comes in, separates or retires — those are major life events,” Mollison said. “We have to make sure we pay everyone, every dime, on time and make sure they’re paid right.”

The squadron is operating primarily by appointment; however, walk-ins are still allowed.

“We’re always going to need support on the financial side of things,” said 2nd Lt. Laura Pulliam, 50th CPTS financial operations flight commander. “People will always need to get paid and some things we can’t do virtually. We need to make sure Airmen can still come in so we can take care of them. Our mission won’t stop because of a pandemic.”

The squadron has implemented “skeleton crews” to minimize risk to Airmen.

“We’re minimizing manning to make sure our Airmen are healthy,” she said. “We’ve cut down the number of Airmen who come into the office daily, but those who stay at home are still working.”

“We’re here to take care of Airmen,” Pulliam said. “It’s important we continue operations to minimize hardships, now more than ever with the stop movement. There’s confusion and we’re here to clear that up and provide a sense of security.”

The unit takes pride in its quick action. Even if the Airman required for assistance is teleworking, they will still provide the highest quality customer service possible.

“Extensive, over-communication is what’s leading us to success,” Mollison said. “We host weekly meetings among the flights and [within] the squadron to make sure we’re staying on the same page and if there’s something [the

Airmen] can’t accomplish, they can pass it on to another member who knows what to do.”

The duty of the unit is not taken lightly. Their mission statement is “To provide timely and accurate financial decision support and customer service to Team Schriever, enabling flawless command of space and cyber systems while developing Air Force Leaders.”

“Our Airmen have showcased a really high level of professionalism and dedication during this pandemic,” he said.

“They’ve done a great job adapting to this different environment we’re working in and feeling out the new ‘norm.’”

DANGERS OF ALCOHOL, TOBACCO use during COVID-19

The 21st Medical Squadron hopes to stymie the potential increase in drug and alcohol use

by Airmen who are spending more time in their dorms due to COVID-19 through education.

As part of the Health Promotion Wellness program, Carol Carr, 21st MDS Health Promotion Program coordinator, provided handouts to Airmen highlighting the dangers of alcohol and tobacco use.

“In stressful times, alcohol or tobacco may seem like a short-term fix, but long-term usage has side effects such as liver and lung damage, respectively,” Carr said. “It is also thought that a healthy diet and exercise routine may reduce your chances of [getting sick] and your symptoms.”

Tech. Sgt. Jean-Philippe Walker, 21st MDS operational support flight chief, also warned Airmen of the dangers of choosing to drink and smoke to calm stress.

“During a time like this many airmen view alcohol as a constant in their lives and turn to drinking and smoking as the outlet for managing stress in a seemingly easy manner,” he said. “However, the overuse of alcohol can lead to a shift in the way our brain interprets stress and creates a deficiency in our response to stress. This is a reason why Airmen should be careful when choosing alcohol as an outlet during a time like this. When considering the negative impact of their use, many Airmen gain a better perspective of where things can go and they also are more willing to change their drinking behaviors.”

According to information from the Mayo Clinic, those with tobacco cravings can diminish the urge by waiting 10 minutes and utilizing distractions.

Chewing sugarless gum, hard candy, eating raw

carrots, celery, nuts or sunflower seeds or other crunchy foods can curb cravings.

The Mayo Clinic also recommends physical activity such as squats, deep knee bends, push-ups, running in place or walking up and down stairs to alleviate tobacco cravings. These exercises also help keep Airmen in shape for their requirements for the Air Force.

“That’s [one of the goals] of the Air Force — maintain your fitness level,” said Seth Cannello, 50th Force Support Squadron fitness and sports manager said. “It’s important to work out to stay in shape but also to maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

Carr also provided a PDF that highlights shortand long-term effects of smoking and drinking.

According to information from Alcohol.org, studies show a combination of smoking and drinking can increase the risk of throat and esophageal cancer.

Drinking alcohol and smoking at the same time affects how quickly the body can metabolize both. The combination causes carcinogens from cigarettes to stay in the bloodstream for longer.

Carcinogens are substances that cause cancer. “(Smoking) affects the way your blood is transferred throughout your systems and closes off your capillaries which harms your ability to transfer blood to muscles and lungs,” Cannello said.

Not only do smoking and drinking hinder blood flow, drinking adds calories into a diet that Airmen wouldn’t have otherwise. Over time, the pair affect the ability to exercise and run.

“If people haven’t worked out and all the sudden they get back into that routine, it’s going to be tough,” he said. “Hopefully, people have been exercising throughout [COVID-19]. I guess we’ll find out come June when people have to start taking their tests again.”

views as it relates following. We often hear things such as “Airman Snuffy” is a yes-man/woman or a brown-nose but is that really the case? Being able to take direction and execute on your leadership’s vision, mission, and priorities are characteristics of a great follower. However, the moniker ‘A great follower’ is often viewed as a roundabout compliment and sometimes a flat-out diss. It is not the reputation our Noncommissioned and Senior Noncommissioned Officers would necessarily like if they are seeking future leadership positions within the Air National Guard. Throughout my 20 years in the military,

I’ve rarely heard anyone praised for how well they follow. That is because, in some circles, there has been sort of a stigma attached to being a follower.

It is a shame because we cannot reach the higher levels of leadership within our Air Force without first establishing the capacity to follow. The fact is, in our enterprise, each person is both a leader and a follower depending on the circumstances, so there should not be any stigma associated with being a great follower.

So, what does it mean to be a great follower? The concept can be broken into three parts. First, to be a great follower, you need to aid and support your leadership. That means supporting your leadership’s vision, goals, and priorities. Second, a great follower shows the ability to take guidance and direction. This means that you think about what’s being conveyed to

you, use reason, and find a way to make the appropriate action to be successful. Third, great followers know how to be part of the team and bring what is expected of them as Airmen. How well we follow as NCOs and SNCOs is perhaps just as vital to mission success as how well we lead.

If improving your leadership abilities is vital to your development, improving how you follow is just as valuable. An Airman being a follower doesn’t always mean taking the back seat, actually it means you are leading from the bottom up. It takes humility, a willingness to serve, unselfishness, and dedication to be a great follower. Remember, a great follower can become a great leader, and great followers help correct the ship. The way you follow will directly drive your leadership style. So, always aspire to be a great follower!

PUBLIC NOTICE REQUEST FOR COMMUNITY RESPONSE REGARDING ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION ACTIVITIES PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule #3 (UCMR 3) sampling results in public wells prompted additional sampling of private and municipal off-base drinking water wells near Peterson Air Force Base (AFB). Treatment systems have been installed at private and municipal wells used as drinking water sources. In addition, Peterson AFB conducted a Preliminary Assessment to identify any potential on base sources. Based on the results the Preliminary Assessment and follow on Site Investigations, it was confirmed that Peterson AFB had PFOS/PFOA impacts to groundwater. These recent Air Force Environmental Restoration Program (ERP) investigations have identified four sites that warrant further evaluation.

The Air Force’s ERP provides for the environmental cleanup of contamination whose release is attributable to the Air Force, including immediate actions taken to remove imminent threats to human health and the environment. Public involvement is a key aspect of the ERP and is the reason for this notice.
