Schriever, Peterson get new EAP counselor

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Employees along the Front Range now have an on-site Employee Assistance Program counselor.

Adam Skibell, Air Force Employee Assistance Program field consultant, will have his main office at Peterson Air Force Base but will also be available to support civilians assigned to Schriever, Buckley and Cheyenne Mountain. Skibell will also assist with the United States Air Force Academy.

Air Force EAP, which went into effect Air Force-wide in October 2017, supports civilians with a variety of resources including access to mental health counselors, finance services and self-care modules for counseling.

Prior to his current position, which began Jan. 13, Skibell worked at Colorado Access in Aurora, assessing those hospitalized who were experiencing a mental health emergency to determine the necessary level of care. Skibell, a licensed mental health counselor with more than 10 years experience, is ready to assist civilians and their families as they face life’s challenges.

“Our mantra is to make your life’s journey easier and we can do that in a number of different ways,” Skibell said. “The programs are free of charge and my branch serves civilians at the various bases. AF

and we can do that in a number of different ways.”

EAP has a number of different programs: career coaching, legal and financial coaching and work-life services.”

All civilians can use the AF EAP program to include part-time, NAF, and civilians supporting the reserve and guard commands. Additionally, any Army civilians at USSF and USAFA are covered by the Air Force Component as well.

The services aren’t only for civilians, they’re also for their families. Anyone who lives in the same household as the government civilian can access the EAP 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“If you have kids coming home from college stressed out about the pandemic and they don’t know how to navigate that, parents can call and make an appointment

or the student can call directly,” Skibell said.

“When they call, they can choose to see me, connect with a local affiliate counselor or receive services virtually or telephonically through our central office.”

Prior to Skibell, civilians worked with a regional counselor who could support as requested.

“We had someone who we could call in from Denver,” said Jan Devitt, 50th Space Wing community support coordinator.

“But last year, the AF EAP program office determined that Peterson and Schriever needed an EAP counselor. So now we have our own and that’s a big deal.”

Shortly after Skibell on-boarded, the COVID-19 pandemic forced many civilians to telework, including Skibell, making ini-

tial introductions tricky. Despite working from home, Skibell still alerted people of the EAP. “He’s been proactive in reaching out and sending information to the people,” Devitt said. “He’s making sure to let civilians know they have a resource they can use.

Whether that’s elderly care or something for parents.”

Skibell wants to address the stigma around the program and change misconceptions people have about seeking help.

“A lot of people think it’s a disciplinary program” he said, adding that some fear “someone might find out” if a civilian or family member uses it.

“I hope to let everyone know it’s more than just an outlet for counseling,” he said.

“It’s for all those challenges that keep us from being focused day-to-day, from home repairs and childcare to family activities to keep everyone connected this summer while we continue to navigate present-day challenges.”

Skibell reinforced an important aspect of the program: its confidentiality. “If someone comes to ask for help, it stays private.

Discovering the Wright path

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— While the COVID-19 pandemic derailed plans for numerous Airmen, Kenneth Wright, 4th Space Operations Squadron ground engineer, made certain not to fall into that pit.

After the virus closed Schriever’s fitness center March 16-May 4, Wright decided to set a goal to run 200 miles in April. He completed his goal April 24 and completed the month at 251 miles.

“It started as something to do on a regular basis and it helped me to establish a routine,” Wright said. “We didn’t know how long this COVID situation would last so I knew I had to do something. I’m so happy I did.”

Wright’s challenge developed shortly after realizing he could not complete the Lazyman Triathlon, which 50th Force Support Squadron holds each year. The triathlon includes swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles and running 26.2 miles in February. The event also features add-ons after each successful month.

To help meet his target, Wright calculated weekly and daily goals to remain on course.

After that, Wright completed each run alone to follow social distancing guidelines.

“I’m a social runner and I like to run with people,” Wright said. “That makes me a better runner and you run faster and harder around other people. But I stayed motivated because I wanted to hit 200 miles.”

The desire to achieve his goal drove Wright to push through the days he experienced soreness or didn’t want to run. Seth Cannello, 50th Force Support Squadron fitness and sports director, understands how critical Wright’s goal-setting was to his success.

“If you don’t have a goal, you just cruise along not really knowing how far you’re going to run or how long you’re going to exercise,” Cannello said. “When you start running or exercising without a goal, you are more likely to quit sooner than if you

had a goal. It’s a good way to keep yourself motivated to succeed and the harder the challenge, the more critical it is to have a plan.”

Cannello isn’t surprised by what Wright has accomplished. Wright is front and center, ready to compete every year at the Lazyman Triathlon.

“Ken has completed the Lazyman Triathlon numerous times and is one of only two people to ever complete both Jacob’s Ladder challenges,” Cannello said. “The two Jacob’s Ladder challenges consist of ‘climbing’ Mt. Everest (29,035 feet) in one month and/or climbing 5,280 feet (one mile) in under an hour.”

The Lazyman Triathlon pushed Wright to new fitness plateaus and helped him develop a passion for swimming. Wright previously used running as his primary source of exercise. After several years of completing the Lazyman, though, he gravitated toward the pool.

“Swimming was a way to extend my running career, but at some point, I started swimming more than running,” Wright said. “After the shutdown happened, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do since pools closed. That’s when I decided to go all in with running and do 200 miles for the month.”

COVID-19 helped Wright “rekindle” his love for running. Currently, he runs 8 miles per day despite the effects it's had on his body.

“If I wake up feeling sore, it’s easy not to run but I’ll do it,” he said. “Running hurts a lot more, but I stick with it. Before COVID[-19] hit, I was more of an avid swimmer than a runner. That’s partly why I switched back to running — to maintain some form of exercise and also establish routine. It’s really benefitted my life.”

Now that he’s completed his goal, Wright said he’s figuring out a new challenge.

“I’m thinking about training for a half marathon,” he said. “I’d like to finish building my base out for May and then start training for a couple of half marathons.”

50 SW/CCC hosts weekly mentorship

— For Chief Master Sgt. Boston Alexander, 50th Space Wing command chief, engaging with Airmen is “champion” business.

During COVID-19 however, opportunities for the chief and his fellow wing leaders to engage with Airmen on a personal level have been few and far between.

“You learn from mentors’ experiences: successes, failures or even just their perspective.”

To fill the void, Alexander initiated an online mentorship series called “Life and Leadership” that has aired three episodes to date.

“Late last year, my team and I were talking about different ways to communicate,” Alexander said. “Maybe you don’t catch someone on shift. Even if you’re speaking at [the First Term Airman’s course] or any other engagement — you’re still missing people. We wanted to get our message out to more teammates (enlisted, officers and civilians) and decided to make podcasts or videos they can access at their leisure.”

“You’re not going to get all the answers to life’s problems and you’re not going to become the greatest leader there’s ever been just by listening, but the hope is we can add to your toolkit,” Alexander said.

Topics covered to date in the series include: the future of space, keys to success

and hope in the face of adversity.

“It’s inspirational to receive mentorship and insight from someone in the higher rungs of the military,” said Airman 1st Class Sebastian Yancey, 2nd Space Operations Squadron space systems operator. “I work mids (a shift that works from 11 p.m. — 7 a.m.) so I don’t get to see our senior leaders that often. It’s nice to have a platform

where I can listen to leadership and receive mentorship without having to be on base at the same time as them.”

Although Alexander hosts the series, Col. Jack Fischer, 50th Space Wing vice commander, has been a guest speaker on an episode, and there are plans to bring in other senior leaders, such as Col. Jim Smith, 50th Space Wing commander and Col. Brian Kehl, 50th Mission Support Group commander among others.

“I like to say we don’t necessarily give advice,” Alexander said. “Every guest is not so much giving advice as they are sharing experiences and different perspectives. You decide what you take from it.”

Alexander calls on his experience; leading Schriever in his current role in addition to his more than 25 years of serving in the Air Force.

“I think everyone wants mentorship,” he said. “You look at stuff and think, ‘I’d like to be that, but how do I get there?’ and as a young Airman you’re often looking and saying, ‘There’s no way.’ You learn from mentors’ experiences: successes, failures or even just their perspective.”

As for a schedule, Alexander said he hopes to release at least one product a week.

However, there is no set schedule for when episodes will be available.

“Come with an open mind,” he said. ”If there’s something you want to hear, let us know. We’re just trying to offer other means for people to connect and receive mentorship.”

Schriever CDC reopens with restrictions

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Schriever Child Development Center reopened its doors May 4 after a near two month closure due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The center plans to phase in the services offered as Schriever moves through Phase 2 of its recovery plan.

“COVID-19 has had a significant impact [on the CDC’s normal operations],” said Jennifer Clare, 50th Force Support Squadron director of the CDC. “We reopened for care with regular hours, but a limited number of children. This is partly due to movement limitations, but also because I have more than 10 staff members out on medical leave until Phase 3 [of the base recovery plan].

“Since returning, CDC staff increased the already stringent

cleaning, sanitizing and sick leave policies.”

And several, including myself, had e-learners at home.”

Since returning, CDC staff increased the already stringent cleaning, sanitizing and sick leave policies. They also conduct wellness checks prior to allowing access to the building, which include taking temperatures and checking the overall well-being of each person entering the facility.

Additionally, staff went through each classroom and removed items that are not easily sanitized, and they’re limiting the number of personnel entering and exiting classrooms. Classes of the same age group no longer combine throughout the day, and meals are now served to the children directly from the teachers instead of using the previous self-serve, family-style method.

“The most challenging change for us is requiring masks of all adults when they are in the building,” said Stacy Compton, 50th FSS child and youth programs flight chief.

“Wearing a mask, while necessary, makes it more difficult to communicate with children. Children with emerging language skills take a lot of cues about the people around them from their facial expressions. Our staff have risen to the challenges, though, and each day find ways to make our children feel welcomed, safe and nurtured.”

While the staff is providing the best care possible and easing into the transition, closing down the facility wasn’t easy.

“There were so many unknowns about the virus and its

We knew it would impact the families we served, as well as ourselves. We faced the challenge of taking care of our staff during that time. We wanted to make sure our staff and their families were weathering this storm.”

Some fears of COVID-19 were realized as paying staff members proved to be a challenge, due to the limited number of children in the facility. However, a team of CDC staff found a solution.

“I do not want anyone to go hungry or have their livelihood affected,” Clare said. “We created a training program that will provide extra hours by increasing job skills for those who would like to increase their paychecks.”

In order to make up COVID-19 restriction-related lost hours, staff members can complete online webinars and training via certified and approved websites. After the training is completed, staff members answer questions and explain how what was covered can be applied in real world situations.

The process might’ve been challenging for some, but the CDC staff and 50th FSS planned and worked around the clock to ensure this transition would go as smoothly as possible for everyone involved.

“We have been planning and strategizing since early April, so returning was not a last minute process,” Clare said. “I am grateful every day to be a part of such an amazing team within the CDC and within 50th FSS. Every base is handling COVID-19 as best they can, but I am proud to be among those who show they truly care about all of their personnel.”
