CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — When I was first asked to write this article, I was filled with excitement that quickly turned to dread. What can I say that has not already been said? There is no way that in my short time in the Air Force, I have learned the secrets to success. That is when I realized that my experiences, while unique to me, are similar to the experiences to those around me, and the lessons I live by should not be concealed but rather shared so others can take bits and pieces and apply it where they need. With that in mind, I have decided to share the three lessons I live by with the hopes of inspiring someone to step out of their comfort zone and try something new.

Lesson 1: Build Meaningful Connections This first lesson is something so simple, yet people choose to shy away from it. I am talking about building meaningful connections with the people around you. As always, taking a step out of your comfort zone and putting yourself out there (with a strong possibility for failure) is easier said than done, and that’s true. I can preach about how easy this would be and none of you would believe me. But being vulnerable in

a new situation or volunteering to take on a task that would otherwise be passed over is how I’ve come to build meaningful connections.

Leaning into a new opportunity when you know it would be easier to just run away is where grit and character come from. These two skills are not only valued in a professional environment but could do wonders for your personal life as well. Many people think to themselves, “There is no way I could

put myself out there…that’s not who I am…I’m too shy,” and to those people I say, “I get it!” Before I started in the Air Force, I was a reluctant college student who truly had no interest in any sort of networking opportunities. into my relationships and the rewards of true friendship and meaningful connections were worth more than the fear I felt.

So, to those who are reluctant to take a step toward a new connection, whether it be a friendship or a conversation with your commander, I say, just try it and see where it takes you.

Lesson 2: Find a Mentor

Mentorship: a word that gets mixed reviews depending on who you ask. Some people cringe at the idea of a formal, sitdown conversation once a month that results in long, awkward pauses, avoiding eye contact and uncomfort-

able goodbyes. And some people have had an amazing mentor/mentee relationship that has lasted years and gone beyond business. While I can attest to both experiences, I truly believe that the mentors I’ve had in my life have shaped me into the officer I am today. Mentors can come in many different shapes and sizes, whether it be the hardened retired chief master sergeant or the laid-back company grade officer, there’s always something to learn. If you take away nothing else, remember this: mentors can come when you least expect them, take every opportunity you can to draw

from their experiences. You may find them to be the most profound person you’ve ever met, or a huge mistake. Don’t let the mistakes deter you, because even from the mistakes you can learn something new, which brings me to my final lesson.

Lesson 3: Embrace Failure Let’s face it, everyone fails. From the very top of the totem to the newest Airman, failure happens at all levels. I’ve realized that the trick to failure is not to let it define me but rather be a lesson learned. The failures I have had in my

life have been plentiful, but from them, I’ve discovered two things. First, lean on your support systems to help you move past your failure. When I think back to my biggest failures, it is not what I did wrong that stands out, but rather the people who were there to help guide me through the tough situation and show me that the failures I have now will equal successes in the future. Second, fail forward. Many believe that failing means progress has stopped, but that is only if you allow the failure to hold you back from trying again. Failing is not something we should be ashamed of but rather an opportunity to learn from our mistakes and grow to become a better version of ourselves.

Schriever FSS innovates, creates virtual FTAC

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— With certain base functions closed due to the pandemic, the 50th Force Support Squadron’s Force Development Flight’s FTAC developed a virtual FTAC course that is being benchmarked across the Air Force.

“Our class helps them transition from a training mindset to a

member ready to support the mission. ” The First Term Airman’s Course is a five-day class every new junior enlisted Airmen must attend upon arriving at their first duty station.

“The program gives Airmen information pertinent to our base, community and ways to set themselves up for success,” said Staff Sgt. David Gudgeon, 50th FSS FTAC noncommissioned officer in charge.

“Airmen have only been in training until this point. Our class helps them transition from a training mindset to a member ready to support the mission. We equip them with all of the knowledge they will

need to be successful, both personally and professionally.”

Out of an abundance of caution, the 50th FSS FDF has changed how they conduct the monthly course to protect Airmen.

“Our next FTAC class is scheduled for June 1 — 5,” he said. “We have reduced the number of students per class [down to 10,] applied [physical] distancing practices and plan to sanitize our room classroom daily.”

However, larger bases don’t necessarily have the luxury of postponing their classes due to a greater number of incoming Airmen. The Schriever FTAC team took action alongside career assistance advisors from Aviano Air Base, Beale Air Force Base and Fort Meade Army post to create a virtual FTAC for their Airmen.

“We don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to interact with the Air Force’s newest Airmen,” said Master Sgt. Kathryn North, 50th Space Wing career assistance advisor. “They are new to each of their locations and there is still much they need to know. Doing these courses virtually allows us to interact sooner and through a format that might even be more comfortable for the newest generation of Airmen.”

Creating the course took about one month and has recently been sent out to every career assistance advisor throughout the United States Air Force. The coursework is made up of videos, slides, documents and interactive pages that help Airmen learn about the Air Force and their base. Additionally, the team is updating it based on initial testing feedback.

“We had no idea how long the COVID-19 restrictions would be in place and we didn’t want to wait to find out and potentially miss out on an opportunity to have a positive impact,” North said. “This also gives us a back-up program in case this situation arises in the future.”

— Quick thinking from a 50th Contracting Squadron Airman helped Schriever and Pentagon officials obtain personal protection equipment in swift fashion.

On April 1, Staff Sgt. Arron Riffle, 50th CONS contracting officer joined the Rapid Acquisition and Procurement Innovation Directorate, an Air Force-wide task force designed to address the supply issues from the COVID-19 crisis.

During their April 6 meeting, RAPiD x identified four vendors who could provide immediate masks. Initially, the task forced planned to write four contracts for companies to sign and process.

Riffle knew that process could take several weeks to complete. He also realized each contracts met the requirements to use the government purchase card — less than $20,000 in purchases — and pitched an alternate solution.

“The need to get personal protective equipment to people in need was the team’s highest priority at the time,” he said. “They were trying to figure out how to go about moving as fast as possible. I’ve never been deployed but I was trying to think, if this was a contingency overseas, how would we operate? The answer isn’t necessarily letter contracts, it’s the GPC.” Tech. Sgt. how they worked,” Holder said. “If they were good, we could secure those for the base and Pentagon. If not, we could give critiques and help [the vendor] improve that product as they ramped up and gave them to more people.”

So far, Holder and Riffle have purchased more than 1,400 masks and 10,000 tension release bands from the identified vendors.

“One of our duties is to make sure small businesses are being taken care of from a contracting perspective and an overarching perspective,” Riffle said. “Not only do PPE requirements funnel money into struggling businesses, but it provides PPE to [Airmen and members of the Pentagon] who didn’t have masks or people who needed more than traditional masks.”

For leaning forward, Riffle earned compliments via email from Brig. Gen. Alice Trevino, Air Force Installation Contracting Center commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Dennis Carr, Air Force Contracting career field manager and chief of enlisted policy. “[Riffle] is motivated and to see him be able to do something that has far-reaching impact is a testament to what he can bring to the Space Force,” said Senior Master Sgt. Michael Welch, 50th CONS superintendent. “When [the task force] came up, we knew [Riffle] was perfect for it. It shows what he’s capable of and the impact he and contracting can have in the bigger picture.

He does great things for this base.”

“Throughout this contingency, there have been long days, nights and weekends and when you keep a pace like that, it drains you,” he said.

“The thing that charges your battery and keeps you going is knowing that you’re helping somebody, whether that’s a small business that’s worried about how they’ll keep the lights on or somebody who is forced to be next to someone and is wondering, ‘Will they get sick?”

Riffle also acknowledged his work

Schriever RA to get cell phone lockers

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Airmen who work in the restricted area at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, will have a new place to store their cell phones on their way into work beginning in June.

Two automated cell phone lockers, one for each RA portal, are scheduled to be installed June 1 and be available soon after. This new addition is a direct result of Schriever leadership listening to and addressing Airmen’s needs and concerns.

“Due to the mission that takes place inside the RA,

it’s crucial members don’t take their cellphones inside.”

“Normally, we receive requests from squadrons based on their needs, but this was a little different,” said Senior Master Sgt. Caitlin Hale, 50th CONS contract specialist, began the process of finding a business that could fulfill the base’s needs for cell phone storage in March 2020, as personal cell phones are prohibited in the RA. “[We] conducted market research to get an idea of how many businesses could provide what we needed,” she said. “[Then, we] posted a solicitation on FedBizOps in order to get quotes from small businesses. Once quotes were received, we reviewed them and ordered them from lowest to highest price. The lowest quote was awarded to the business that included the brand name vending technology that was required.”

The 50th CONS awarded the contract to AutoCrib of Tustin, California, to install the lockers.

The 50th Contracting Squadron recently awarded a contract to AutoCrib of Tustin, California, to install automated cell phone lockers inside each restricted area portal at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado. The lockers will bring additional convenience, protection and support to both Schriever members and the mission here.

“I am definitely excited to use the phone lockers,” said Airman 1st Class Dianna Mulder, 50th Operations Support Squadron student. “As someone who carpools regularly to Schriever, having them will be great. This way if my ride to Schriever can’t take me home, I don’t have to retrieve my phone out of their car before leaving work.”

The process of checking phones in-andout of the lockers involves five steps: • Log in by scanning the RA badge.

• Select to store a personal device in either the upper, middle or lower storage location within the locker.

• Select the correct size for the device.

• For retrieval, members will scan their RA badge and the machine will automatically retrieve the correct personal electronic device.

“This will be a huge morale booster because it will allow us to have connection to the outside world during breaks in the middle of a workday,” Mulder said. “Many of us in the RA work long hours in a dark, windowless room. Having that part of the day will give us something else to look forward to. Whether it is talking with our families or playing a phone game, it will allow for a mental break.”

While the lockers can serve as a morale booster for Team Schriever members working in the RA, they’re also an important reminder to make sure phones are left in a secure location before entering the RA. “This will definitely help prevent people from accidentally bringing their phones in the RA,” she said. “Even people with personal vehicles to store their phones in will see the lockers every morning and be reminded to check for their phone one last time before entering the RA.” Due to the mission that takes place inside the RA, it’s crucial members don’t take their cellphones inside. The lockers will bring additional convenience, protection and support to both Schriever members and the mission here.
