Faces of Space – Master Sgt. James Randolph

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, U.S. Space Force Master Sgt. James Randolph, Space Delta 9 — Orbital Warfare, 1st Space Operations Squadron flight chief, watched as the life he built for himself crumbled. Over the last 15 years, he has worked to build himself a successful career and a loving family from the ground up.

Randolph studied business computer information systems at the University of North Texas. However, college life wasn’t exactly what he hoped it would be.

“I was not enjoying college and was having to work full time,” Randolph said, “so, I figured, if I was going to work I should go ahead and work for myself.”

After many failed attempts, Randolph and his friend finally found success in their computer engineering business called DFW Computer Guys.

“We had made it past the one-and-a-half year mark [and] were making money,” Randolph said. “[We] had stopped eating Ramen every night and were putting money in our pockets, then 9/11 happened.”

Randolph and his partner had to shut down their business due to the ensuing recessions.

“It was devastating for us because, in our eyes, we had made it,” Randolph recalled. “All business ceased. We had bills to pay and no money coming in. After that, we both gave up on running our own

business and [we] had to go back to reality and find jobs.”

He worked odd jobs over the years to keep afloat, but he wanted more for himself. At the age of 26 Randolph joined the U.S. Air Force.

“The combination of wanting to serve and the need of some stability in my life led me down this path,” Randolph said.

Over his 15-year career, Randolph has achieved the rank of master sergeant, as well as becoming the flight chief of op-

erations. He later became one of the first service members to join the U.S. Space Force.

“This was a once in a lifetime opportunity I could not pass up,” Randolph explained. “It feels awesome to be part of the initial cadre in the [U.S.] Space Force and to be able to look back once I am retired and say that I had a hand in that.”

According to U.S. Space Force Capt.

Jeremiah Specht, DEL 9, 1st SOPS flight commander, Randolph has a great work ethic and makes sure his flight is always looked after.

“Master Sgt. Randolph is a very serious person,” Specht said. “He is very strict, but will work tirelessly to take care of and look out for his people.”

Outside of work Randolph is also a dedicated family man. With a wife and a 7-year-old daughter at home, he looks forward to spending time with his family the most. They like to hike, ride bikes and play outside in the wooded area near their home; his daughter especially loves the outdoors.

“I think just the fact that I can go home and know I have a loving family waiting on me is huge,” Randolph said. “In the military we typically aren’t around the rest of our [extended] family so that bond at home is so much more im-portant.”

Despite facing difficulties and setbacks early on, Randolph has since discovered a greater pur-pose through military and family life, and he is grateful for the life he is able to live now.

CGHEE TYSON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Tenn. — I recently took some time to read through hundreds of telegrams and letters placed in an extensive scrapbook collection by the Air National Guard’s first director, now on file with the I.G. Brown Training and Education Center on McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base in East Tennessee.

TEC is named after U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. I.G. Brown. He led the Air National Guard for nearly a dozen years — first as the National Guard Bureau’s Assistant Chief for Air in 1962.

We do not write and mail letters in the military much today.

So I appreciated how these physical messages told a story in a way apart from virtual communications. I also believe that General Brown hand-picked these letters, speeches, and photographs from the more mundane communications of a senior military official. He must have wanted us to read them.

The earliest keepsake is a Western Union Telegram from Washington, dated Sept. 28, 1962; as a newly appointed Assistant Chief for Air in the Pentagon, the message notified Colonel Brown of his promotion to brigadier general.

He was 47.

A clipped newspaper article from I.G.’s hometown of Little Rock points out that General Brown was once the Garland County Sheriff from 1947-1950. The promotion was big news for Little Rock, and several of the general’s acquaintances mailed him the same clipping.

One man in Arkansas writes on car dealership stationery, telling I.G. that “he finally made it” and requests that he come home soon to go fishing. (He also notes that the car he inquired about is best to purchase when the 1963 models come out.)

I.G.’s time as Sheriff was two decades before he founded the military schoolhouse that bears his name. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1942. The young officer served in several assignments during the war, including the chief pilot for the 1st Foreign Transport Group. He stayed parttime in the Reserves just after the war and then joined what would soon become the Arkansas Air National Guard.

Brown was appointed chief of staff in Arkansas some years later until he got recalled into active service for the Korean War. He traveled up to the Pentagon in 1951 to serve as an executive officer and special assistant.

General Brown was conscious of his letter collection, his words, and how others interpreted him as a senior officer.

“The problem is that words which to me clearly denote my intended meaning may carry all sorts of different connotations,” writes General Brown in a 1966 speech that he gave to NGB officers. “So the meaning of words, both the written kind and spoken kind, can get garbled …”

Consider that the general saved the speech, folding it along with his scrapbooked letters. Printed in a big typeset, it’s a bit yellowed, but physically holding it is like feeling how Brown flipped through it.

officers’ written and verbal communications through proper departments and echelons. He states: “… the advantage of coordination in this manner is obvious.

We want everyone brought into the picture, and we want the benefit of everyone’s thinking.”

General Brown emphasizes the need to communicate in NGB correspondence, “we should be exchanging important communications a great deal more than we are …” he wrote.

Letters highlight many of the keynote speeches that I.G. gave for events and groups across the nation, and letters offer thanks in response to that support. For General Brown, his writing is much more than today’s split-second social media. It was his way of promoting the Air National Guard, the professionalism and capability of the people who serve in it, and his way of convincing others to consider that or reconsider that.

The collection is filled with notes from key leaders of his time. In one 1972 letter, the sixth Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force, Gen. John P. McConnell, sends thanks to General Brown for transport assistance from the Air National Guard.

In another letter, the first Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Paul W. Airey thanks General Brown for inviting and allowing him to attend TEC’s first NCO Academy graduation in July 1968. “I was highly impressed by the dedication and motivation of the NCOs that I came in contact with,” wrote Chief Airey. “I am proud and pleased to see that the Air National Guard is keeping pace with the Air Force. Needless to say, you are a vital part of our Aerospace Defense Force.”

That graduation ties back to an invitation to speak at an NCO academy graduation at Hamilton Air Force Base, California, in 1966. It impelled Brown that

the National Guard should have an NCO academy. His letters after its establishment invite senior military, industry leaders, and elected officials to TEC’s graduation ceremonies.

Astonishingly, a telephone company plant foreman wrote the general to thank him for their employee’s NCO academy training, as a “definite factor” in their promotion to plant supervisor.

There is politeness and formality throughout many of these correspondences. Letters to and from servicemembers’ families deployed in Southeast Asia.

Letters from members of Congress and governors. The American Legion, the Kiwanis Club, the Civil Air Patrol, the Air Force Association, the Boy Scouts, and national guard associations.

“I want to acknowledge with deep personal appreciation your corporation and assistance in returning the men of the 116th Engineer Battalion of the Idaho National Guard following their tour of duty in Vietnam,” writes U.S. Rep. Orval Hansen to General Brown in 1969. He outlines efforts in rejoining the unit with their families in Idaho.

General Brown retired in 1974, and no other leader served in the position longer. Of course, he received many letters of congratulations addressed to a man who took much time in mailing heartfelt letters of support.

The general died three months after TEC took on his last name and initials in 1978. He was 63.

His obituary is absent from the collection, which is not surprising when considering he served as his own curator. Also missing is the disclosure of two words answering the often-asked question that Brown never wrote for us: what does the I.G. stand for? Still, his correspondence defined him.

Wyoming Guardsmen complete annual aerial wildland firefighting training

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Every year, one Air Force Reserve wing and three Air National Guard wings along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service train and certify for aerial wildland fire fighting. On May 10-16, the Air Force Reserve 302nd Airlift Wing and the Wyoming Air National Guard 153rd Airlift Wing completed their annual training, hosted by Jeffco Airtanker base, Colorado.

The C-130 Hercules aircraft used for this mission are equipped with the USDA Forest Service Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System which can drop up to 3,000 gallons of fire retardant, or potable water during training, in less than 10 seconds to create a quarter-mile containment line.

“Our fire training this year is vital because we are coming out of COVID season where training last year was hampered and we were not able to get folks into the same room to share lessons learned, new tactics and new strategies,” said Lt. Col. Richard Pantusa, 302 AW C-130 pilot and aerial firefighting chief. “This year we are going to be spending a lot of time focusing on emerging technologies, strategies, and procedures so that we can do this safely.”

Sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, the training consists of classroom sessions, flying and ground operations for Air Force aircrews, lead plane pilots and support personnel from the USDA Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and other state and federal firefighting agencies. When the pilots and crews train, the MAFFS units are filled with potable water for practice drops.

The wings flew their training drops this year in the Arapaho/Roosevelt and PikeSan Isabel National Forests and Bureau of Land Management lands.

much learning happens through personal interaction and it’s hard to replace the classroom setting when it comes to training like this. Last year we had a massive zoom conference training but this year we were able to get back to the classroom setting again.”

They were also able to meet with the lead plane pilots to discuss and demonstrate finer details on the fire traffic procedures, communication and coordination. The experience in interagency coordination and communication is very beneficial to not only the MAFFS program but also to the wing’s primary mission of combat airlift and air drop, said Espy.

The MAFFS mission requires skills and

the annual training, said Espy. It not only allows for the sharing of experience to the newer crews but also streamlines the procedures between the Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard and USDA Forest Service.

During the training, crews from the 302 AW and the 153 AW were able to fly and train together on each other’s aircraft.

“This demonstrated the interoperability between the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve that, even though there are some differences between the guard and the reserve, we still operate the C-130 the same way and there is good value in that mixing,” said Espy. “That is what is valuable about doing the MAFFS training exercises with the other wings because there is the opportunity for a lot of cross talk.”

The 302 AW, 153 AW, California Air National Guard 146th Airlift Wing and Nevada Air National Guard 152nd Airlift Wing provide a surge capacity that can be used for wildfire suppression efforts when other aerial firefighting resources are being used or are unavailable.

“We get sent out as a surge capacity to a very large fleet that’s in employment year round where the fire season typically starts out early in February and extends all the way out into November and December,” said Pantusa. “We contribute as Air Force eight additional aircraft. In 2020 we were deployed from the end of July until October, so for about two and a half months we were in California fighting some extreme fires that were breaking out there.”

When the wings are dispatched to a fire location, they work for the incident commanders who are on ground. The containment lines the MAFFS units drop directly helps the fire fighters on the ground and together work to slow or stop the spread of the wildland fire.

“MAFFS is a mission we enjoy doing and have a lot of pride in because it makes a difference in our local community and across our nation,” said Espy.

The program offered an opportunity for Airmen, Guardians and civilians to decompress and check out virtual reality gear provided by the Peterson-Schriever Garrison chaplains.

Schriever Air Force Base celebrated April as the Month of the Military Child. The SAFB School Liaison opened the Gratitude Garden and Community Library to provide a location for military children to gather and practice gratitude by writing, listening and learning together. At the Community Library, anyone can take a book and leave a book to share and build a life-long love of reading. The garden was officially opened adjacent to the CDC Friday, April 30, 2021.

Schriever Air Force Base celebrated April as the Month of the Military Child. Among the many events planned to mark the occasion, the SAFG School Liaison opened the Gratitude Garden and Community Library to provide a location for military related families to visit to restore emotional and social wellbeing by reading books and engaging in yoga. The garden was officially opened adjacent to the CDC Friday, April 30, 2021.

Denali climbers hope to highlight importance of proactive resilience

ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. — Five current and former Airmen — including two Air Force Reservists — who are planning to scale the highest mountain peak in North America beginning later this month, are hoping their expedition will put a spotlight on the importance of proactive resilience.

Lt. Col. Rob Marshall, an individual mobilization augmentee assigned to U.S. Space Operations Command who is currently on full-time orders with the Air Reserve Personnel Center at Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado, will be leading the 20,310-foot climb up Denali in Alaska beginning May 29.

Also on the climb will be active-duty Lt. Col. Mark Uberuaga, traditional Reservist Maj. Marshall Klitzke and former Airmen Mark Schaffeld and Wesley Morgan.

“It’s going to be a difficult climb, so we formed a group of highly qualified mountaineers, but we also wanted several Airmen who have overcome significant personal hardships because we want to use their stories to highlight how important it is for people to practice being actively resilient,” Marshall said.

An experienced mountaineer who has scaled many of the world’s highest peaks, Marshall said climbing helps him deal with the problems in life he is currently going through, but it also helps him be better prepared for any difficulties that may come in the future.

“I was into mountain climbing as a

hobby when I was young, but I didn’t realize it was resiliency related until 2005,” he said. “I was a young captain in my 20s and I was on a special operations mission in Albania when our sister ship crashed into a mountain range and killed all nine Airmen on board. That was my first real close experience with death and losing friends I worked with on a daily basis.

I became depressed and needed to find a way to process the pain I was going through.”

Marshall said his first response was to turn to alcohol to deal with the loss.

When that didn’t work, he looked to the mountains.

“I was really at a low point, so I turned to mountaineering because that was my happy place,” he said. “I turned to my community because I had friends who liked to mountaineer and it took my mind off the pain, but it also helped me process the continued page 10 | RESILIENCE

pain. We talked about the loss while we were hiking and mountaineering. I found it helped me process it way better than drinking beer with the guys in the bar.”

The lieutenant colonel said that as he continued to climb and spend time in nature in the years that followed, he felt his resilience grow.

“What’s cool about mountaineering for me is it hits all four pillars of comprehensive Airman fitness,” he said.

“Obviously, it’s extremely challenging physically. Socially, it’s such an amazing experience because you’re spending days, if not weeks, with other people and you develop deep, lifelong bonds.

It’s mentally stimulating — there is risk management happening all the time and route finding and managing days of food and planning out schedules. It takes tremendous mental fortitude. And finally, nature is my church. That’s where I feel closest to God, to spirit, to perfection.

Watching the sun rise or the sun set from these high mountains just fills up my spiritual bucket.”

Marshall said this climb up Denali is especially significant for him because the last time he tried to reach this summit, he didn’t quite make it.

“I tried to climb Denali back in 2009 and the military recalled me when I was one day from the summit,” he said. “I got the call saying they needed me right now for the first combat deployment of the CV-22 Osprey to Iraq. When I said I’ll summit tomorrow and leave right after that, they said no, we need you right now. So while I was on a plane leaving the glacier, my team was reaching the summit.”

Marshall said this climb is also special because of a new physical challenge he will be trying to overcome.

“About a month and a half ago, the Air Force diagnosed me with two torn meniscus in my left knee,” he said. “I tore them skiing and the surgeon is already talking about a possible knee replacement after I’m done with Denali.

It’s going to be super challenging, but we want to show people that they can overcome challenges if they have already worked on building up their resilience.”

Marshall isn’t the only climber who will be dealing with physical issues during the Denali climb.

Uberuaga recently survived a major infection in his spine that resulted in the removal of two of his vertebrae. He had spinal reconstruction surgery in December.

“Training for Denali helped me and my caregivers set and achieve challenging goals instead of settling for a life of mediocrity,” he said. “Outdoor adventure sports provide me the best form of my creative expression and I find an abundance of energy when considering and executing trips into the mountains.”

Schaffeld, who is currently employed as a social worker with the Boise Veterans Administration Medical Center, said mountaineering has helped him overcome the traumatic brain injury he suffered while serving as a security forces Airman in the late 1980s.

“Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, the outdoors have always been a source of adventure and healing for me,” he said. “I credit my work as a seasonal park ranger, exploring the backcountry of Crater Lake, Sequoia/Kings Canyon and Olympic National Park as a significant part of my healing/recovery process.”

Marshall said the team is going to be doing something unique during this Denali expedition.

“We’re going to do the normal Denali climb, called the West Buttress, to about 14,000 feet,” he said. “From there, we’re going to take a more difficult route, called the Upper West Rib, for the final 6,000 vertical feet. The plan is to leave most of our gear at 14,000 feet and climb the last 6,000 feet and ski back down to our camp, all in one day. That last day is going to be extremely challenging, but we think there is value in trying something harder than average.”

While Marshall said he is looking forward to the climb because it will help him strengthen his own resiliency, he is hoping this expedition will inspire other Airmen.

“The more I mountaineer, I feel like the more prepared I am for unexpected problems or even traumatic stress,” he said. “It may not be mountains for you, but knowing you have a community or place on Earth you can go to when tragedy strikes or you are really having a tough time, that’s your resilience safe haven. We want to inspire Airmen to get in touch with what makes them feel resilient and then get out and do it. That’s active resiliency.”
