SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing Wing Staff Agencies defeated reigning champions, 4th Space Operations Squadron, in the 2017-2018 Intramural Basketball Championship Feb. 27.

Losing to the 4th SOPS in the semifinals

last year, the 50th WSA was ready to redeem themselves.

50th WSA sealed their victory with a score of 44-41, holding onto the lead the entire game.

50th WSA’s road to the championship was not easy, as their team was small however, they had seasoned veterans.

“It was a rollercoaster for our team, but overall, we had a strong regular season,” said Michael Kilbourn, 50th WSA shooting guard.

“Like all teams, it took us a while to form and get there. It was a challenge because unlike your traditional sport seasons where you have See Champions page 12

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — As Airmen, we are continuously counseled on the art of leadership and reminded commanders are responsible for the successful CSMNG CSMNG performance of their organization. But how is everyone else approaching the challenges of leadership in the meantime? In our business, commanders are certainly responsible for setting a vision and guiding the mission, but leadership can and should come from every direction in an organization.

Each of our organizations, no matter how big or small, is under constantly increasing pressure to not only succeed, but to move fast, achieve more and be able to adapt quickly.

These types of challenges aren’t effectively managed without leadership flowing from multiple directions. In fact, success is virtually impossible without it.

Overcoming traditional organizational leadership challenges mainly comes down to empowering personnel to lead from all positions. This requires allowing everyone to own their projects and openly present ideas and initiatives. Commanders will look to those individuals who are able to take ownership of initiatives and develop them by connecting with counterparts from inside and outside their organizations and across different levels of competencies.

These leaders are able to reach out to all required parties and not only get them to listen to ideas but persuade them to actively participate in processes.

nizations can no longer rely on simply issuing directions for others to blindly take and follow. Commanders should expect their best leaders will communicate upwards. That is, they will actively participate in strategic conversations and ensure that clear guidance and direction is being conveyed and decisions are understood.

This type of multi-directional leadership and communication presents clear advantages. This approach: • Increases the ability for everyone to display leadership

• Leads others to seek to understand the context of decisions and why they matter • Creates two-way dialogue which is extremely advantageous in organizations • Allows personnel at all levels to take ownership of their projects and tasks This approach goes beyond traditional ideas, and as history has proven, non-traditional approaches usually take a while to institutionalize. Every person in an organization isn’t going to suddenly embrace an upward leadership mindset and begin engaging with leadership in a way that changes the unit’s mindset. Patience and persistence is required, but the results will be worth the effort.

An easy way to view the progress of a multidirectional leadership strategy is through the perspective of the next conversation you have with either your subordinate or supervisor about any organizational challenge.

Once both sides have shown that they fully understand objectives and are committed to them, present a few ideas from your own point of view and allow others to be presented. Be sure to approach it as a two-way conversation and take note of how well ideas are developed and shared. Pay attention to how decisions are reached when multi-directional leadership and open dialogue lead to a shared outcome.

So there it is: Multi-Directional Leadership.

Remember rigid, one-way management does not equal leadership and in order to encourage inclusion and foster growth in any organization, engagement is required from all directions. Now go ahead, see how far this approach takes you and be sure to pronounce my name correctly when you are thanking me in your next promotion, graduation or Nobel Prize recipient speech.

The 21st Medical and Dental Squadron pharmacy has an over-the-counter medication program available to all active duty, dependents and retirees enrolled at Schriever and Peterson Air Force Bases. Make the most of tax refunds

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted a Make the Most of Your Tax Refund class March 1 at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, as part of Military Saves Week, which ran Feb. 26 to March 3.

“We wanted to help people understand how to make the most of their tax refunds,” said Liz Archuleta, community readiness consultant with the 50th Force Support Squadron. “It’s important people either have a plan in place for those large sums of money or know how to put that money back in their paychecks.”

Military Saves Week is part of a larger initiative by a nonprofit organization called America Saves and the American Savings Education Council. This year, organizers are stressing the importance of having a plan.

Archuleta taught the tax refund class and advised people to follow a “30-40-30, past, present and future” plan.

Past: designate 30 percent of your tax return to paying off debt and catching up on outstanding bills.

“Always pay on your past first,” Archuleta said. “A lot of times people don’t focus on getting ahead on payments. They think, ‘oh I’ll just keep making the payments and it will be fine.’ Well, the longer you take to pay something off, the more interest you pay.”

When it comes to choosing which bills to pay off first, Archuleta said there are two schools of thought.

“There’s something to be said for paying off the debt with the highest interest rate first,” she said. “That’s a very sound decision.

However, financial experts also tell us that it’s smart to pay off the smallest debts first, because it gives you a psychological boost to pay something completely off. It motivates you to do the same with other bills. So, if you’re the type of person that needs to see

impact right away, pay a small debt off first.”

“The present is a reward system,” she said.

“Sometimes it can feel overwhelming if we get a large return and know you don’t get to see any of it because it’s all going towards

bills. We are creatures who need a boost sometimes and want to spend a little on ourselves.

“This isn’t to say you have to spend 40 percent on yourself,” she continued. “You can adjust any one of these numbers to emphasize what’s most important to you. If you can

Wing CC praises execution of first-ever ops By 2nd Lt. Scarlett Rodriguez 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Col. Jennifer Grant, commander of the 50th Space Wing, called together wing members to praise the milestone operations that took place the weekend before, during two all-calls, Feb. 22.

“I wanted a chance to get all hands together to talk with you and to say thank you,” Grant said. “Everybody in this room knows this was not an easy task.”

“This” being the week-long execution of not only a repair and restructure of power on Schriever Air Force Base, but also the successful deployment of all space operations at an alternate location, with zero mission impact.

“We talk a lot about our vision: One team, mastering space and cyberspace … now and into the future. We talk about our mission: Evolve space and cyberspace warfighting superiority through integrated and innovative operations,” she said. “Our activity and execution of mission the last week is a perfect illustration of both.”

However, with great execution of the mission, Grant made a point to highlight how it could not have been done without great emphasis on vision. Particularly the employment of “one team,” each and every member who worked as a piece of the greater puzzle knew their part and acted as such.

“We had seven straight days of activity and when we tallied up the numbers we had a total of 575 people working, intensely, over the three day weekend,” Grant said. “That’s just here at the 50th Space Wing. That doesn’t include our mission partners, our Reserve wing components, and the far-end users. So, who you see here sitting around the room is just a subset of our total employed manpower for this effort.

“There were also more than 1,000 circuits,

six operating locations, 18 stakeholders, and no mission impacts … zero,” she continued.

“That doesn’t happen by accident, that doesn’t even happen by luck.”

Grant went on to explain how the successful transfer of operations supporting maintenance repair of our infrastructure was only possible through the tireless and careful planning of each commander, as well as the careful and focused execution of each member.

“When you have a checklist and you have a procedure in place, all you have to do is pull it off the shelf and execute, that’s easy,” she explained. “When you’re doing something like we did, which was something this installation had never had to do before — ever. No, we had never done it, a full, coordinated outage affecting more than 1,000 circuits, and then bringing them back up. It isn’t easy, and everyone has to be engaged to make the effort a success.”

Grant admitted leaders were wary but supportive when in the research and planning phases of completing this unique challenge, especially when hearing all power to Building 400 would have to be shut off in order to accomplish the repair.

However, despite the unknowns associated with the induced-outage, Airmen and their leadership felt prepared to meet the challenge.

“You did it and you made it look easy,” Grant said. “We just proved we could do what nobody thought we could do without a severe impact to operations.”

To sum up all the work completed during these operations, Grant called upon not only her commanders and enlisted leaders, but also various levels and classifications of Airmen who their supervisors found to be integral to the operations during the week, over the weekend and beyond.

— The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted a Matri-Money class at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Feb. 28.

Throughout the week, the A&FRC teamed up with financial advisers to encourage military families to practice sound financial behavior for Military Saves Week.

Ruth Moore, community readiness consultant with the 50th Force Support Squadron, led the class and provided information to engaged and married couples about managing their finances.

“This is a fun class that provides tips and strategies to help couples through financial setbacks, set financial goals, make a money plan, use effective communication methods and solve problems as a couple,” Moore said.

This was the first time the class was offered to Schriever members and their loved ones.

The class covered goal setting, hidden issues, speaker/listener techniques and understanding emotional issues about money.

After listening to tips and tricks, attendees provided perspectives about the financial advice they received.

“This class was very informative,” said Airman 1st Class Jade Karpicke, space systems operator with the 4th Space Operations Squadron. “No matter where you stand financially, it’s a good idea to take this class. My wife and I are expecting our first child and this helped point out ways we could change to save a couple bucks here and there.”

Participants also took a money personality quiz. Based on the answers, everyone was ranked as either a spender, hoarder, avoider, celebrator or money saint.

“The ‘money personalities’ quiz was my favorite part,” Moore said. “Like almost everything else in life, your response to mon-

However, have you given much thought to how you behave in regard to your finances and how that behavior affects your bottom line? Understanding your money personality is the first step and will help you shape your approach to spending, saving and investing.”

Karpicke said the quiz led to revelations of what kind of spender he is.

“I thought the quiz was interesting,” he said. “It showed different aspects about yourself you wouldn’t expect. I never would have thought I was categorized as an avoider.

“I would recommend this class to anybody,” he added. “When you join the military it’s a different way of life and it can be hard to find the perfect balance financially, so I think attending these types of classes are definitely worthwhile.”

Moore expressed why she finds this class to be beneficial for couples.

“This is an effective way for couples to learn strategies to improve their finances,” she said.

“Financial education classes often neglect communication skills and focus solely on the mechanics of budgeting and expense

tracking; however, I find great value in helping couples communicate about money. If they aren’t comfortable talking about their finances, managing them will be difficult.”

Moore said there is potential to hold more classes of this kind throughout the year if there is a demand for it.

A good rule is to have enough money to cover your bills for three to six months in your savings. However, at a minimum, you should have enough money to cover the deductibles on your car and homeowner’s insurance.”

According to Archuleta, emergency funds are of particular importance to married Airmen.

“In the event you get orders to move, usually a working spouse quits their job first,” she said. “If your bills are such that it requires the spouse to work, there’s going to be a period where that person is unemployed and it will be critical you have enough money saved up to cover your bills until they can start working.”

For people who get large returns at tax time but struggle paycheck-to-paycheck during the year, Archuleta suggested adjusting deductions in MyPay so the money is spread throughout the year.

“I see so many people who get massive returns but barely get by during the year,” she said. “I

strongly advise those people to reroute that money into their paychecks instead of deferring it until tax season.”

To avoid confusion over how many deductions to claim and to associate dollar amounts with the number and types of deductions, Archuleta advised people to use the withholding calculator on the Internal Revenue Service website before adjusting their deductions.

Staff Sgt. Fallon Dortch, counterspace threat analyst with the 310th Operations Support Squadron, attended the class and found it helpful.

“I didn’t have as solid of a plan laid out before I took the class, but I’m going to follow the 30-40-30 plan,” she said. “I struggle with ‘want versus need’ sometimes, but something like this will keep me accountable. I have debts I need to pay, but it’s nice to know I don’t have to spend it all on debt and not feel bad about it.”

Dortch encouraged people to take advantage of the resources the A&FRC offers including financial classes like this.

“There are big changes coming to tax law this year, so it’s important people stay informed,” she said. “If you have a chance to go, you should.”

SAI helps Airmen soar

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Many associate being in the Air Force with serving as a pilot or working with aircraft, however, thanks to Schriever’s Single Airmen’s Initiative, space Airmen such as Senior Airman Cameron Crabtree, mission planner with the 4th Space Operations Squadron, have the opportunity take the reins of an Aircraft — for free.

The SAI Discovery Flight program sends Airmen to Colorado Spring’s Aviation located at Meadow Lake Airport in Peyton, Colorado, where they undergo a 30 minute airplane fundamentals briefing and safety inspection before soaring into the air in a single engine airplane, taking control of the plane mid-flight above the skies (an experienced instructor accompanying the participant controls the plane during takeoff and landing).

Crabtree, an aspiring pilot, said the experience was secondto-none and helped boost his passion for piloting.

“It (Discovery Flight) was one of the greatest things I’ve ever done,” Crabtree said. “I was surprised how hands on it was.”

He said his instructors were professional and informative during the pre-briefing and flight.

“I was a little nervous starting off, but the instructors were incredibly helpful,” Crabtree said. “It’s like a driver’s education class, he’s right next to you and can take over the controls anytime.”

Discovery Flight is only one of many free SAI activities.

Other events include hunting, painting and snowmobiling.

To be part of the program, you must be a single (not married) officer or enlisted Airman.

Seth Cannello, fitness and sports manager with the 50th Force Support Squadron, said he encourages all those eligible to participate in the plethora of exciting — and often otherwise expensive — SAI activities.

“There’s so many outdoor activities to do in Colorado,” he said. “This program allows someone to try something they might not ordinarily do with a group of people with some common background.”

Crabtree agreed, saying SAI is a resource that can’t be overlooked.

and it’s a privilege we can do all this fun stuff,” he said. “It’s free and it’s fun and you should definitely take advantage of it.”

Thanks to SAI, Crabtree said he fulfilled his dream without spending a dime.

“Flying the plane was surreal, you feel totally free,” he said. “The view was great. This was the final push to get me to go out and truly pursue piloting.”

While the current Discovery Flight roster is full, Cannello

anticipates another event in the future and has more events lined up throughout the year.

He stressed his message encouraging Airmen to seek SAI opportunities.

“Why not? It’s free and if you want to do something you’ve never done before you have the opportunity to do it,” he said. “Plus, you can spend time with your fellow Airmen.”

The 50th WSA played the 50th Operations Support Squadron in the semifinal game and won by nearly 30 points.

“It took us awhile to get into a rhythm, but over the course of the last three games we were on the upswing, and it came at a perfect time,” Kilbourn said. “By the time we were in the final game, we were where we needed to be. We rode that momentum into the championship game.”

Rickie Banister, shooting guard with the 50th WSA, said their team came together in the playoffs, and they played the best basketball in the two games leading up to the championship than they had all season.

“Everyone understood their role and everyone did their job,” he said.

Matthew Jackson, point guard with the 50th WSA, agreed the semifinal game boosted their confidence going into the final game.

“With so many ups and downs throughout the season, the semifinal game helped us prepare for the championship,” he said.

Kilbourn added the hardest parts were 4th SOPS players’ talent and numbers.

“At any point we were facing the prospect of them deciding to dial it up and us not having the same amount of band-

width,” he said. “We just knew we were up against a really formidable opponent.”

For Kilbourn, the game was more mental than physical.

“You have to create a little friction,” he said. “If you’re like me and you have a competitive spirit, you’re centered on some sort of adversity. You have to have something to overcome.”

Kilbourn added if you can get the other team opposed to you and get in their heads, then you can edge them out.

Anthony Gardner with 4th SOPS, said their team went into the championship with the same game play they had all season: fast breaks and moving the ball quickly.

Gardner said they played good defense, but could not get their shots in the hoop.

“The two most talented teams played against each other, and we didn’t have our roles nailed down well enough,” he said.

“They’re a group of talented guys and they deserved to win.”

Banister, Kilbourn and Jackson all praised their coach, Gregory Deas with the 50th SW Inspector General Office, on his ability to bring the team together and ultimately seal their victory.

“We tried player coaches but they didn’t work out,” Banister said. “We knew we had a good enough team to make it to the finals, but without a coach we couldn’t win it. We talked to someone we all respected.

“He (Deas) never gets too high or low,” he added. “He has no problem being honest

and tells you not what you want to hear but what you need to hear. It was the unity of command and Deas’ singular voice that was the difference-maker.”

Deas’ advice to slow the game down and focus on each individual’s role on the team led them to victory.

“He just told us to do our job, and not worry about anyone else,” Banister said.

“We always had the potential to play at that level. We were, at times, our own worst enemy, but the other side of that coin is that our potential was boundless, we chose not to defeat ourselves which allowed us to win.”

“We had high hopes this year,” Jackson said. “We finally accomplished what we set out to do.”

Kilbourn added although the sport is meant to be fun, it gets serious.

“There’s pent up emotion, and it actually feels really great when you win,” he said. “For one second, that fun feeling is at the pinnacle.”

“We got that monkey off our back,” Banister added. “We got to exhale, and all our hard work paid off. This was a David versus Goliath story.”

Kilbourn has been playing basketball since he was a child, and his favorite part about the sport is how dynamic it is.

“You’re facing all these obstacles simultaneously, and it’s a teamwork-oriented sport,” he said. “It’s mental, physical and emotional and tasks every bit of your character.”

As part of the Wing Commander’s Inspection Program, “improving the unit,” one of the four major graded areas, Kilbourn compared basketball to improving his unit, the 50th CONS. “I think basketball is a metaphor for the prospect that if people are being taken care of and taking care of themselves, they can take care of each other,” he said. “It’s a positive, vicious cycle.”

Banister added with the 50th WSA team working together not only improved each individual unit, but the wing as a whole.

“We’re one team, one fight, and that’s exactly what happened with us during the season,” he said. “Finance, contracting, IG and the NOG formed one team and we won. It was integration at its finest. We brought everything together to make it work for one mission.”

To “stay ready in the off season,” also the theme for this year’s CCIP, Kilbourn said the 50th CONS tries to acknowledge the need of the unit as a whole.

“We really believe in the fact that folks need the opportunity to create a whole person concept, otherwise the unit has no chance of meeting its potential,” he said. “It starts with the self. Basketball and other intramural sports presents this opportunity. It creates harmony because it doesn’t force you to choose between work and personal growth.”

Nutrition care accessible via telehealth appointments

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — The U.S. Air Force Medical Service is working to increase access to high level nutrition care using tele-medical nutrition therapy.

With tele-medical nutrition therapy, or tele-MNT, patients get a referral from their primary care provider to meet with a dietitian via video teleconferencing anywhere in the world.

The dietitian can guide them through a wide variety of issues, such as weight, celiac disease, allergies, hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Tele-MNT provides a level of care not available in-person at many Air Force facilities that can help patients navigate complex nutrition needs and improve patient outcomes.

“Nutrition care is effective in disease mitigation and prevention,” said Maj. Minette Herrick, chief of Health Promotion with the Air Force Medical Operations Agency.

Tele-MNT makes it easier for patients to get assessments, diagnoses, interventions, monitoring, and evaluation for various conditions across the age spectrum.”

Providing the tele-MNT services is not only helpful in disease management, but is also essential to Airmen readiness. AFMS Dietitians focus on keeping Airmen healthy and ready.

“There is a definite correlation between nutrition and readiness,” Herrick said. “Weight and diet affects your ability to pass your physical fitness test. It also affects the ability to maintain ready forces and perform downrange.”

The tele-MNT program started in November 2017, and has already received 30 referrals and made a positive impact on patient satisfaction.

“The program is starting to pick up as more patient sites open and people become interested in nutritional care,” Herrick said. “We are hearing positive things already. Patients really love the convenience of the video teleconference and think it works well.”

With positive feedback from patients, tele-MNT is aiming

to add locations and bring on more dietitians.

“We want to expand the number of sites where patients can access tele-MNT to bring more nutrition resources to patients,” Herrick explained. “Eventually we want to make it easier to provide nutrition care to where patients live, work, and play.”

USAFA coach heads Team USA at World Indoor Championships

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — Air Force track and field head coach Ralph Lindeman will head Team USA at the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships beginning March 1 in Birmingham, UK. He’ll be assisted by assistant coaches Darryl Woodson, Norman Tate, Teddy Mitchell, and head manager Clif McKenzie.

Lindeman’s excited at the prospect of bringing back “lessons learned” from Team USA to the Academy.

“Things like how the best athletes in the world practice and train under their personal coaches, how they prepare mentally for competition, [and] the importance they put on nutrition and rest,” he said.

Lindeman is in his 29th season as the Academy’s head track and field coach. He’s guided Air Force to its seventh Mountain West title since 2012; earned his 16th conference coach of the year award; and served on Team USA at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and at the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Osaka, Japan.

He’s also been on national coaching staffs

for the World University Games, the Pan American Games, the U.S. Olympic Festival and the World Junior Championships.

“I really believe my selection is a reflection of what my peers believe is the quality of leadership I can provide for the team and staff, and the reputation our Air Force teams have for a culture of commitment and a climate of respect, not to mention a tradition of championships,” he said.

The four-day IAAF World Indoor Championships will be held at Arena Birmingham and broadcast via NBCSN and NBC Sports Gold.
