Run for fun in St. Paddy’s Day race

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The 50th Force Support Squadron will provide a blend of entertainment and competition during the annual St. Paddy’s Day Fun Run at 2 p.m. March 13 near the fitness center.

The race is a 2.5-mile run that is part of the Commander’s Cup and, depending on weather, usually fields 100-150 participants, who start near the upper end of the gym parking lot near the batting cages.

“We have prizes for the top three, but it’s about coming out and having fun.”

“Everything will be marked with cones and chalk — it’s pretty straight forward,” said Seth Cannello, 50th FSS fitness and sports manager. “It’s our standard route.

Even if you haven’t run it, the cones and chalk will take you around.”

Runners have the opportunity to earn points in the Commander’s Cup for their squadron depending on their placement in the race.

The top three male and female finishers earn 50, 40 and 30 points, respectively, and earn gift cards.

First place’s gift card is $75, second is $50 and third is $25. The top 100 finishers receive T-shirts.

“I have to guess the sizes of the shirts — that’s another incentive to finish ahead of the pack,” Cannello said, “You get to pick what size you want.”

While participants can earn points for their squadrons in the Commander’s Cup

and receive gifts, Cannello wants to highlight the unity aspect of the race.

“It’s not really about the shirt — it’s fun to get out and run as a group,” Cannello said.

“I know a lot of squadron commanders who instead of working out that morning during their normal (physical training), they’ll do their PT in the afternoon. It’s a small run, so they won’t get super healthy in one day. But this gives people something to look forward to and it brings them together.”

Mark Schuette, 50th FSS assistant fitness and sports manager, worked several St. Paddy’s Day runs since he arrived at Schriever in 2001.

During those 19 years, Schuette typically received positive feedback from participants

unless Mother Nature impacted the course.

“I don’t think anyone has come out and not had fun unless there’s bad weather,” he said. “But it’s not a grueling event like a half-marathon or anything, so most people can come and participate. Sometimes (4th Space Operations Squadron) will get their whole team together. We typically get a lot of people who come out dressed in green to do the run.”

Cannello enjoys seeing the bond units build during the race and how squadrons understand the competition and “fun” aspect of the race. He’s ready to witness another year of teams building cohesion through the event.

My leadership style is democratic, supportive and customer-service based. I strive to be an engaged and involved leader who focuses on and cultivates the strengths of each individual team member. I rely heavily on the expertise of the team and encourage the maximization of contributions from individual functions. Ultimately, the force support squadron is a customer-based organization and regardless of your position within the squadron, it is essential that you possess a customer-service mindset.

Our jobs rely on our customers and our goal should be to not only meet but exceed expectations through the establishment and ongoing implementation of new and innovative services.

What was your motivation for joining the Air Force and where did you start your career?

My grandfather was an Air Force pilot and growing up he shared stories of his missions in support of WWII and the Cold War. Based on our conversations, I knew that I wanted to support the Airmen who served to protect our country. As a student at Eastern Washington University, I had an opportunity to take part in an internship with the Air Force at Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany. This internship afforded me the opportunity to work with the force support squadron to enhance services and support for the Airmen and launched my career in civil service.

Growing up in Alaska, I have always enjoyed the outdoors and my hobbies have revolved around getting outside.

I spend a lot of my free time trail running, skiing and traveling and am able to enjoy these activities with my wife and two kids. My children have reached an age where they are able to fully participate in outdoor endeavors and it has been a great experience getting to see them grow and develop an appreciation for nature. Moving to Colorado, with all of its amazing outdoor opportunities, has been a wonderful experience.

What aspects of leadership do you find most important?

Leaders need to be approachable, invested and involved.

Education Center propels Airmen to reach goals

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The 50th Space Wing Education Center opened Jan. 6, 2020 and is simultaneously supporting installation personnel, while developing the support provided.

The education center opened with limited functions, but since its opening there have been expansions to services, previously not seen at here.

“We are still moving forward with the expansions, we have planned for services like tuition assistance,” said Lauren Clark, 50th Force Support Squadron education services specialist. “There’s also college and career counseling, the skillbridge program and the education program.”

The skillbridge program, which helps those seeking to transition to the civilian workforce, is gaining interest since the education center’s opening.

“Due to the high volume of attendance in our previous skillbridge briefings, which we offer quarterly, we are looking to transition to offering the briefing monthly going forward,” Clark said.

Since opening in January, the center increased their personnel number to six in support of the services provided with plans to add another education counselor and a test control officer with those positions still being coordinated.

Jim Driscoll joined the team as the flight chief taking on force development and Staff Sgt. David Gudgeon stepped in as First Term Airman Center noncommissioned officer in charge are two other new additions to the team.

The team while evolving services and personnel, is meeting the wing’s vision and is looking for more ways to do so.

“We’re continuing to push forward with the parameters we need for certifying our test control room,” Clark said. “Ultimately,

being able to offer military testing, as well as College Level Examination Program and Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support Program testing will be great. Although we are not quite there yet, our team is moving in the right direction.”

The education center has a steady increase of foot traffic in their office since their opening in addition to phone calls and emails.

“We have seen over 75 people just in January,” Clark said. “As people enroll in classes the volume tends to die down a little, but as the new semesters start, we see an increase in people looking to start a class.”

On top of increasing the support provided to Airmen seeking educational pursuits, the team also pursues ways to produce more professional development opportunities.

“One of the specific things we have discussed is taking professional development to the Airmen,” Master Sgt. Kathryn North, 50th FSS career assistance advisor said.

“Instead of asking personnel to come out of their work centers to see us for a couple of hours, we would like to bring it back to them. Professional development doesn’t just affect the individual, it affects their peers, leadership and the Airmen they supervise.

If we can get our message out there, we can have a great impact on Team Schriever as a whole.”

According to Clark, the education center benefits Airmen and prepares them for the future, which starts by walking through their doors.

“There will come a time where military service ends,” Clark said. “Whether that’s in six years, 20 years or 30 years, what can be done to prepare for the future? There are a lot of benefits available to personnel and the door opens to those by asking. We can assist in meeting an individual’s goals.”

1st SOPS provides upgrade to GSSAP

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 1st Space Operations Squadron completed a trial period in December for the Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program ground system and conducted an operational acceptance Feb. 12.

The GSSAP ground system, which allows operators to communicate with and control GSSAP spacecraft, became operational in September 2015.

In 2017, 1st SOPS began working on the software overhaul for the system. While GSSAP regularly undergoes minor updates, the trial period allowed 1st SOPS to test and validate system improvements prior to accepting the new system.

“There have been a series of robust security upgrades,” said Capt. Bradley Frost, 1st SOPS satellite engineer. “There have been new hardware and bug fixes that have sig-

nificantly increased the reliability of the system. To sum it up, it’s better, faster and more secure than ever before.”

Lt. Col. Bryan Bell, 1st SOPS commander, noted how the upgrade is one of the most significant of the ground systems since its inception and Capt. Zachary Funke, 1st SOPS engineer, echoed those sentiments.

“This upgrade is important for the future of the program because of the future expansion of the GSSAP constellation,” Funke said. “GSSAP plays an important space defense role in the US Space Force’s arsenal. Space domain awareness is critical to the enterprise.”

In order for GSSAP to operate at an efficient level, ground

operations need to be as effective as the hardware in space.

“The more functions that reside on the ground, the more we can stay updated as technology increases and operational demands increase,” Frost said. “Surface level, it looks like a room of computers and server racks with fiber running every which way. But it is this set of hardware, and the software loaded onto it, that enables our operators to plan and execute daily tasks.”

The engineering team at 1st SOPS played a role in communicating and delivering information to the system program office.

“We were involved in providing feedback to the contractor team during development to make sure the right product was being delivered,” Frost said. “The engineering team is critical in coordinating the installation and checkout of the new ground system. This includes verifying new features work as advertised and completing regression testing.”

Airmen prepare for Death March

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Team Schriever members prep their minds and bodies for the Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico March 15.

The event, established in 1989, is a 26.2-mile run/hike that honors the 75,000 U.S. and Filipino service members held as prisoners of war in the Philippine Islands during World War II. The marathon is open to civilians and military members and all participants will receive a full quart of water to start. Around 30 Schriever Airmen will participate in the marathon.

One of the participants, 1st Lt. Michael Horvat, 2nd Space Operations Squadron lead mission analyst, hadn’t previously heard of the race until he received an invite from a fellow Airman.

“One day, Lt. Justin Taylor said, ‘Hey, are you trying to do this Bataan Death March thing?’” Horvat said. “I asked him what it was because it sounded kind of terrifying. But he explained what it was and I wanted to do it.”

Horvat researched the marathon’s details, checked blogs and talked to Airmen in his squadron to navigate the challenges.

He learned the importance of eating certain foods such as carbohydrates to stay fueled during the marathon and how to effectively use his gear.

“Ted Williams, (2nd SOPS program coordinator), from our front office gave me tips on how to break in my boots faster,” Horvat said. “He said put them in the shower and get them wet, wear the socks you’re going to wear for the

race, tighten your boots as tight as you’ll wear them for the race and wear (the boots and socks) until they dry. Do that a couple times, get inserts and do that again with the inserts. It helps wear down the leather and helps it conform to the shape of your foot.”

Another first timer, 1st Lt. Marcel Cloutier, 2nd SOPS GPS subsystem analyst, witnessed the fatigue of his roommate after he completed the march last year.

“I won’t say he (1st Lt. Harrison Holmes) had fun doing it — he came back and was absolutely exhausted,” Cloutier said. “But this is a good way to bond. If you’re suffering together, you get closer. It’s going to be tough. I have no doubt in my ability to finish. How fast and how painful it is though? Who knows.”

Though Cloutier understands the challenge the Bataan Memorial Death March presents, he appreciates the bigger picture.

The march during World War II took soldiers nearly 65 miles through the Philippine jungles, where hundreds of U.S. troops died. Cloutier plans to use their struggles to keep him motivated during the marathon.

“I asked him what it was because it

sounded kind of terrifying.”

“As much as I may be suffering in it, other people have had it so much worse,” Cloutier said. “It’s less than half the distance of the original Death March. We won’t have people beating us or shooting at us. I plan on keeping that in mind when I have mental challenges or I’m out of breath or my legs start to go.”

— The 50th Space Wing’s senior-ranking civilian hosted a civilian town hall Feb. 26 in the Building 300 Auditorium here.

The town hall addressed issues civilians face and solutions and resources available to civilians during their careers.

“The reason we decided to go ahead and host a town hall was to make sure folks are aware wing leadership sees the important and critical role our civilians play,” said Ronald Gevry, 50th Space Wing director of staff.

“We’ve got everything available for your professional development.”

Air Force Personnel Center, Civilian Personnel Office and the education center representatives spoke during the hour-long event.

“We want to do what’s right to make sure we’re taking care of you, that we’re looking after your interests and that we’re posturing everyone for success from a personal and mission perspective,” Gevry said.

Crystal Moore, AFPC director of the financial management career field team, presented what career field teams can do for civilians.

“We’re here to support you from the careerfield team perspective,” Moore said. “If we don’t have you out in the field, we don’t have a job. We’re here to support initiatives to grow and develop the civilian workforce and

give you guidance and advice throughout your career.”

Moore discussed career growth and development, force renewal, force sustainment and force development as well as tuition entitlements and resources available for civilians to reach career goals.

To expand on civilian education, James Driscoll, 50th Force Support Squadron education center flight chief, talked about how his section supports civilian development.

Driscoll began his segment by asking how many of the attendees knew Schriever had its own education center. Few hands were raised.

“We just started up an education center a couple of weeks ago,” he said. “Many people have had to go to the [Air Force] Academy or Peterson [Air Force Base to access an education center.] We’ve got everything available for your professional development. From your civilian education or tuition assistance, we want to help you advance your career.”

Additionally, Alisha Davis, 50th SW civilian personnel flight chief, discussed civilian health and wellness, teleworking, alternate work schedules, and overtime, compensatory time and credit hours.

“Work-life programs available to civilians are often overlooked or not known about since we’re in such a high operational environment,” Davis said.

Among other topics, Gevry discussed the Employee Assistance Program, which is available to civilians working for the Air Force.

“The employee assistance program is a program the Air Force has to provide support, advice and help to our civilian employees and their families,” Gevry said. “When it’s appropriate to seek help, engage the resources available to you and your family.”

The United States Air Force Academy is scheduled to host the Falcon 50 April 25, an event consisting of four different races: the Military Heavy (a 26.2-mile run with a 35-lb ruck), a half marathon, a marathon and a 50-mile run. Staff and Family Tour

Schriever personnel and their families are invited on a Staff and Family Tour from 11:45 a.m.-4 p.m., March 20. All tour stops are inside the restricted area and will start with lunch at the DISH dining facility. Space is limited, so it’s first come, first served.

Children are welcome, however, most of the tour may be too technical to keep the attention of young children. The tour will include stairs and standing with limited room, so strollers cannot be accommodated.

Tuition Assistance Brief

The 50th Force Support Squadron is scheduled to host a tuition assistance brief from 3-4 p.m. March 9 and 27 in Building 210, Room 310. No appointment is required and the briefing is mandatory for all first-time TA users. Additionally, any personnel who have not pursued their education in the last year are now required by AFI 36-2649 to have follow-up counseling. This briefing fulfills the requirement.

Informed Decision Course

The 50th Force Support Squadron is scheduled to host an Informed Decision Course 9 a.m.-noon March 31, in Building 210, Room 310. The course is designed to enhance knowledge of Air Force benefits. The goal is to ensure personnel obtain needed information in order to make sound decisions for themselves and their family. First term Airmen and second term Airmen 12-15 months prior to their date of separation are required to attend pending involuntary separation.
