Major’s Space Force transfer marks service trifecta

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Service can take on many forms, but for one Joint Task Force-Space Defense member it included several uniforms when transferred to his third service in October.

Maj. Darrell Glover, Requirements, Architectures and Analysis Division chief, first entered military service more than 20 years ago when he enlisted in the Army, in what is today combat communications. The Modesto, Calif., native fulfilled his dream of world travel but was only able to deploy once to Kosovo.

After completing his service commitment in 2003, Glover returned to California where he and his then fiancé hit the books at college.

“About halfway through my degree, I started to miss the comradery and considered returning to the service,” he said. “I was seeing my friends deploy and realized I missed the military lifestyle and the uniqueness of what we do.”

The now married Glover joined Fresno State’s Air Force ROTC program with the intent of becoming a pilot. He completed a three week summer introduction to flying program and was hooked.

“My wife questioned the decision,” he said. “I was surprised too that I gravitated toward that but she likes travelling and was on board.”

Glover was selected for pilot training and headed off to training in Texas.

“I was about a third of the way through and realized I wasn’t enjoying it as much as I thought I would,” he said. “So I asked to do something else and I got my first choice of space and missile operations.”

Glover completed training at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., before heading off to Malmstrom AFB, Mont. During this assignment, he met one of his three military mentors.

“Now Col. Todd Sauls showed me you can do well by doing your job well and not just trying to check boxes,” said Glover. “He made me feel like it was OK to manage my career by doing what makes me happy and serving the Air Force.”

Around this time the Air Force started separating the space and missile specialty codes into two separate career fields. Glover was among the last group given the choice

of which one they wanted to continue to serve and Glover chose space.

“I felt like space had more that aligned with my interests and so I wanted to try it, if I didn’t like it I figured I could always try something else,” which Glover said has been his motto throughout his time in all three services.

Glover’s first space assignment was at Schriever AFB, where he supported the 11th Space Warning Squadron and the Space Based Infrared System.

“I loved it. It started off rough coming from the highly structured, defined missile operations to space but we worked through

that and I felt like I was able to leave the unit better than I found it,” he said.

From there, Glover transitioned to Thule Air Base, the U.S. Space Force’s northernmost installation.

“It was like ‘Groundhog’ week every week but I loved the mission,” he said. “The family separation was hard, harder on my wife who was taking care of everything including our four children but it was a good assignment.”

During this assignment, Glover worked with his second mentor Lt. Col. David Ransom, then 12th Space Warning Squadron commander, now assigned to Space Operations Command.

“He really helped me with my outlook on how to get things done,” Glover said.

“You’re most productive when you enjoy what you’re doing.”

Ransom said Glover’s professionalism and ability to get things done are “truly remarkable.”

“He figures things out and creates results, plus he has a great sense of humor behind impeccable professionalism,” he said. “I would pick him on my team anytime in any situation, arctic mission zone, Iraq war zone, etc. I would even make sure I pick him first for [my] floor hockey team.”

From there the Glover family headed back to California to Beale AFB where he served as a detachment commander and then the director of operations at the 7th Space Warning Squadron.

Here his third military mentor also recognized his sense of humor and ability to get the job done.

“Major Glover is a dedicated space professional with the operational background that makes him invaluable for any team that he’s on,” said Lt. Col. Charles Sandusky, then 7th SWS commander now Delta 2 deputy commander. “[He brings] operational knowledge, dedication to the mission and people along with a great sense of humor!”

During this assignment, Glover’s then parent organization 21st Space Wing put out a call for pinned majors with radar experience to go to the National Space Defense Center.

“I’d heard of the NSDS but I had no idea what they did, so I thought I could try that,” he said.

He now works to on-board new capabilities in support of the organization’s protect and defend mission.

“We’re unique and doing different things and that’s growing as we onboard capabilities,” he said. “I am glad I came and tried it sight unseen.”

And when given the opportunity to take his commitment to space to another level, Glover joined the Space Force in October 2020.

“My uncle had a huge impact on me, hearing about his experiences in the service made me realize it was something I wanted to do,” he said. “Serving is a unique thing and such a small portion of our people serve.

I think it’s important to give back, whether its four years or 20.”

OVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. — Have you had a life altering moment? Not like dodging a car accident that made your heart skip a few beats.

I’m talking about a moment where the fundamentals of who you are become questioned. The type when you look in the mirror and the reflection you see is not yours. If you have, I want you to think back to that specific moment in time when you decided not to let “it” define you.

This very sentence reminds me of a revealing quote by Simon Sinek, “Most of us live our lives by accident — we live as it happens. Fulfillment comes when we live our lives on purpose.”

Prior to 2016, I spent most of my volunteer time with activities or organizations concentrated toward teaching and leading Airmen in any venue I could reach.

That all changed when someone I trusted and thought had pure intentions reminded me how horrid and selfish some people fundamentally are. A series of events unfolded and I eventually found myself confronted with having to make extreme decisions.

The influencers of my life at that time assured me the court proceedings would not bring value to my healing process; I T:9.5" followed their advice.

Unfortunately, I opted not to take part in the legal process

until the formal discharge board proceedings against that Airman, which took place in 2018. During this time, I didn’t work on healing.

Honestly, I was in self-preservation mode. I was fully focused on staying afloat at work and keeping my family from seeing my tears. Writing poems became my lone release for the pain and frustrations that engulfed me.

But it wasn’t enough and I still felt empty and sought to fill the void. I didn’t know how, but I knew I needed to change the course I was on or “it” was going to redefine who I was in all areas of my life.

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germay — In the past year, many units had to adapt and overcome due to the restrictions brought about by COVID-19. One Airman assigned to the 4th Expeditionary Space Control Flight-Alpha at Nigerien Air Base 201, Agadez, Niger, went above and beyond to help his unit succeed due to travel restrictions.

Senior Airman John Jaquez, 4 ESPCF-A satellite communications, is keeping the mission afloat by working outside of his normal duties to perform depot-level maintenance tasks and backfill the gap COVID-19 has caused for depot engineers to travel into theater.

Depot-level maintenance is any major repair, overhaul or complete rebuilding of equipment whether that is the hardware or software. Most equipment goes through depot-level maintenance whether it is routine maintenance or required for mission success. Depot-level maintenance is normally performed by teams who specialize on the specific piece of equipment.

As a radio frequency technician, Jaquez maintains antennas by performing preventive maintenance inspections, giving him an edge up on depot-level maintenance tasks.

“Senior Airman Jaquez is the only member on our deployed team who received specialized training to perform the depot-level maintenance tasks for our system,” said Tech. Sgt. Roy McCune, 4 ESPCF-A senior enlisted leader. “Because COVID-19 has restricted movement and made travel into theater more difficult, Senior Airman Jaquez has been able to

step into that role and provide the skills necessary to accomplish these tasks.”

With depot maintenance not being part of his normal duties, Jaquez is honored by being given the opportunity to do more.

“I think this is a great opportunity my leadership has given me,” Jaquez said.

“I’m able to step out of my normal routine and see other parts of the world and expand my Air Force family.”

Jaquez has also used a skill set that every member of the Air Force has used over this past year to ensure mission success.

“Adapt and overcome,” Jaquez said.

“Sometimes you have to be flexible in order for the mission to continue.”

For some, an accomplishment might be completing a depot task, but for Jaquez, his accomplishment is his team.

“I’d say my biggest accomplishment is being able to work with and be part of the team,” Jaquez said. “They make it easy for me to do my job because it’s more like a family away from home. I couldn’t ask for a better team.”

Airmen deployed to the 435th Air Expeditionary Wing provide combat airpower and base operating support for operations across Africa. They enable the employment of expeditionary airpower to ensure access across Africa and accomplish national and U.S. Africa Command objectives.

“Senior Airman Jaquez’s work is critical to keeping our 24/7/365 mission running by preventing maintenance downtime and identifying and fixing both minor and major SATCOM issues so that the support 4 ESPCF provides continues uninterrupted,” McCune said.

“I couldn’t ask for a better team.”

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — After 14 years in the U.S. Air Force, Tech.

Sgt. Shaneka Hunter, the 721st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of cyber intelligence transferred to the U.S. Space Force as Space Delta 2’s first AfricanAmerican female, Feb. 2, 2021, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

The Claxton, Georgia, native’s military and personal experiences have given Space Delta 2 leadership a motivated and eager noncommissioned officer for their Airmen and Guardians.

“Being on my own at such an early age forced me to become my own biggest support system,” said Hunter. “I had no choice but to set goals and push myself to succeed in everything I do. Doing this enabled me to consistently progress in life with the drive and motivation to sustain any, if not all of my goals.”

That mentality has pushed Hunter into a wide variety of situations. Seven years ago, she heard about obstacle course races and decided she was going to run one, even though she hadn’t prepared. Despite the heat and exhaustion, she still finished. To this day she still signs up and competes in them.

“The first race was tough,” Hunter said.

“I continued to do them because they were always challenging and forced me to push myself physically and mentally, which I enjoyed. Plus the T-shirts, medals and everything that happened after the races were always worth the pain and torment.”

She’s not all hard work all the time though. She enjoys being outdoors, hiking and kayaking, but Hunter says there is an importance to taking time to slow down and find balance throughout life. Between working and her hobbies, Hunter tries to find time to take a day or even a weekend to focus on herself.

“In a sense, what I want to do is give time back to myself, even if that means sleeping or having a quiet day inside away from others,” Hunter said. “I get a chance to re-center so

that I have the energy needed to fulfill my responsibilities. It’s important to remind myself to do this, because if I’m not mentally and spiritually resilient, I’m no good to anyone. I can’t provide support to the mission or people.”

Hunter’s drive to help and lead people has been visible throughout her career. She’s received multiple awards for leadership in her squadrons, instructed at the Airman Leadership School for four years and is a credentialed DOD Sexual Assault Volunteer

Hunter said she thinks her open-mindedness provides her the ability to see situations and viewpoints from different perspectives, which helps her to have a better understanding of people.

military. Watching them grow as leaders was the best part.”

Hunter’s understanding of others also comes from her own experiences in the military. She explained how her overall experience in the Air Force has been great. With the chance to learn many skills, share her knowledge and lead in many different ways, she’s been able to grow personally and professionally. However, it hasn’t been without its challenges. She believes those same challenges have prepared her to be a better leader.

“As a Black woman in the military, I will always have to work harder than my counterparts to prove I’m just as capable,” Hunter said. “Although it’s been tough throughout the years overcoming racial adversity, I’ve managed to stay true to myself by overlooking the negativity and lack of understanding by pushing myself even harder. I know I’m capable of achieving all things regardless of my race.”

Now, as a new Guardian for Space Delta 2, Hunter’s sights are set on helping to build and grow the newest service branch and its people.

“Honestly, I’m nervously excited,” Hunter said. “I’m ready to learn, contribute and grow as a leader in this new branch. I believe the excitement comes from seeing how much our leaders have put into the strategic planning of the USSF and seeing the amount of faith they have in us to accomplish the new mission set. To see that I was one of the members they deemed a viable asset towards building the foundation within the new structure is beyond me and still shakes me to the core today.”

Hunter’s biggest advice to Airmen and Guardians alike is to remain open to new concepts, ideas and be flexible, as things constantly change in the military.

“I would also advise Airmen [and Guardians] to not be afraid to use their voices especially if their ideas will help improve processes within the work place,” said Hunter. “In the diverse and cultured environment we live in, our leaders welcome ideas that could potentially benefit all members of the service at a larger scale whether that’s with ops, career or personal things.”

I found myself in a vicious cycle of work, family, dayto-day grind and drinking myself to sleep hoping to avoid the nightmares. With lots of reflection, I realized I longed to feel the joy I once sensed: mentoring and helping people.

Additionally, I came to realize my dark poems were keeping me in a rotation of destructive emotions.

Intentionally, I began spending more of my time leading outside the uniform. Knowing something had to change, I accepted the role as an event director for the Professional Armed Forces Rodeo Association.

Additionally, I accepted the only enlisted leadership role appointed to a military member on behalf of Cheyenne Frontier Days. Both organizations tied directly into our family’s passion for horses and rodeo.

Working with people outside of the military was that change of scenery that I needed to redirect my focus away from “it.”

These acts of being a servant leader offered me different opportunities so I could refocus my attention. It was more than something to consume time or stay busy; it was things I willingly chose to invest in.

The act of feeling as if I had control and a voice again began to replace the shattered pieces of me that remained.

One example was while representing PAFRA, we spent an afternoon with hospital-bound oncology patients during the finals of the world championship rodeo.

Seeing those kids muster the courage to meet our rodeo horses in the parking lot was indescribable. It absorbed several hours of our day, but it created mem-

ories for children and families who had been limited to living in the oncology ward.

It gave them a moment to be engaged, while at least temporarily not having to focus on all the negative that had become their “it." This is exactly what focusing on the spirit of community was doing for me.

The act of giving provided me outlets to concentrate on positive opportunities versus my trauma. It has empowered me to write a success story for those who could use a lending hand. Serving others motivates me and preoccupies me from dwelling on various aspects of my past.

This is not meant to downgrade anyone’s life trials.

Drinking my trauma away wasn’t the answer for me, nor was it productive in the healing process. I sadly did not wake up with that revelation. It took time and realizing that I needed to find something more.

To this day, it takes frequent reminders that what happened did not need to define who I am, nor does it deserve that power. This message is intended for you to fill the “it” with your current or past situations. No matter how large or small those tribulations may be, only you can determine what happens next.

Smokeless tobacco: Not a quick fix

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Co. — Are you considering using smokeless tobacco? Maybe you think you can use it at times when smoking a cigarette or a vape isn’t allowed. Maybe you’re trying to quit smoking and you think that switching to smokeless tobacco is less harmful.

Feb. 25 marks the Great American Spit Out Campaign to help increase awareness to the dangers of smokeless tobacco. Even if you or those you love could give up smokeless tobacco for one day, that would be a great start in the right direction.

Using smokeless tobacco as a quick fix to get nicotine or to quit other forms of tobacco may seem like a good idea, especially if you see your buddies using it.

However, no tobacco product is safe, and, as a reminder, even smokeless tobacco can only be used at designated tobacco use areas.

Back up — what is smokeless tobacco?

Smokeless tobacco comes in many forms, such as chew, snuff, dip or snus; and is placed between the lip or cheek and gum. The nicotine is then absorbed through the mouth tissues and into the body.

Why do people use smokeless tobacco?

Some people think using smokeless tobacco is a safer

and quicker way to quit smoking. But smokeless tobacco actually contains more nicotine, the highly addictive chemical in the tobacco plant and tobacco products, than cigarettes. Thus, it is as addictive as smoking and causes intense cravings when you don’t have it. There is no proof that smokeless tobacco helps people quit smoking.

You may also be using smokeless tobacco to stay alert on duty, particularly when you have duty on aircraft, the flight line or submarine, where smoking cigarettes is not allowed. Keep in mind that the Department of Defense rules are the same for all tobacco products: They may only be used in designated tobacco use areas. There are no exceptions for smokeless tobacco use.

What are the risks of smokeless tobacco?

Smokeless tobacco is harmful. In fact, some of the health effects of smokeless tobacco are the same as smoking cigarettes: • Impaired night vision and hearing • Skin wrinkles • Poor wound healing • Higher blood pressure and heart rate • Impaired sexual performance • Lowered fertility for women • Low birthweight and increased risk of premature births or stillbirths when used during pregnancy

Smokeless tobacco has other risks too: • Gum disease, tooth decay and tooth loss • Leukoplakia, which are white or gray spots in the mouth that can lead to cancer • Cancer of the mouth, tongue, esophagus or pancreas.

It is never too late to quit tobacco. The benefits of quitting tobacco begin within minutes of nicotine leaving your body, such as decreased pulse rate and blood pressure, and continue for a number of years.

Here’s how you can get support to help you quit: • Talk to your health care provider. They can provide counseling, recommend programs and talk about whether tobacco cessation products, like medications or nicotine replacement therapy, are right for you.

• Try DipfreeTXT, a texting program specifically for those who use smokeless tobacco.

• Consider using 24/7 live chat on the YouCanQuit2 website, or mobile apps such as QuitGuide or QuitStart.

Cold weather safety tips Cold weather can increase heart rate and blood pressure.

It can make blood clot more easily and constrict arteries, which decreases blood supply. This is true even in healthy people. Individuals over the age of 40 or who are relatively inactive should be particularly careful.

National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely: • Do not shovel after eating or while smoking • Take it slow and stretch out before you begin • Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter • Push the snow rather than lifting it • If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel • Lift with your legs, not your back • Do not work to the point of exhaustion • Know the signs of a heart attack, and stop immediately and call 911 if you're experiencing any of them; every minute counts.

Dependent ID Extension Memo

Due to COVID-19, the policy for dependent IDs has changed and allows dependents to use their IDs through June 31 even if they are expired.

The Health Promotions office will host in-person appointments each week on Mondays and Fridays for appointments such as the bodpod or teaching classes. New Military Spouse Occupational Licensure Program Under a new law effective Jan. 1, 2021, military spouses may obtain three-year temporary credentials for any profession or occupation under the purview of Department of Regulatory Agencies (DPO), if they hold a credential in good standing from another US state or territory and meet certain other requirements. This new program is provided at no cost to the military spouse and is part of Colorado House Bill 20-1326 Create Occupational Credential Portability Program (HB20-1326), which Gov. Polis signed on June 25, 2020.

Applications are available for military spouses in each profession on the DPO's online licensing website https://apps.colorado.gov/dora/licensing/ Default.aspx. A&FRC to host Right Start The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosts a Right Start Information Fair 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., the third Thursday of each month at the Building 300 Auditorium. Breakfast with the Bunny On March 27, the 50th Force Support Squadron will host this year’s “breakfast with the bunny,” which includes a pancake breakfast, photo opportunity with the bunny and an egg hunt from 8:30 -11:30 a.m. at the Fitness Center.
