Schriever becomes first Space Force installation to host SMART training

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing hosted its first ever Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Training March 11 — 16 in the Schriever Air Force Base Auditorium.

The wing is the first in the United States Space Force and second in the Department of the Air Force certified to host the training.

Jessica Ditson, 50th SW violence prevention integrator, training host, earned her credentials through a weeklong workshop at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. After earning her credentials, she attended the University of Texas at Dallas for a week to become a certified training instructor. Additionally, she had to complete 40 hours of online training.

“SMART training focuses on enhancing brain (mental) performance by focusing on strategic attention, integrated reasoning and innovation strategies to form cognitive resilience,” Ditson said.

The training covered the following topics: • Strategic attention — the ability to limit distractions.

• Integrated reasoning — the ability to transform thoughts into high-level ideas to improve problem-solving, memory and reasoning.

• Innovation — Shifting routine thinking into actionplans and diverse perspectives that work to propel personal and professional goals forward.

“This training provides an avenue for Airmen to take control of their cognitive energy and decide how to spend it,” Ditson said. “How cool would it be to be able to be a part of the mission here and be able to have enough energy at the end of the day to engage with family and friends? Anyone can benefit from the techniques taught in this training.”

This iteration of the training included two, three-hour sessions Airmen could attend for free. The wing is planning to host more trainings like this in the future once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

“Our brains are an important muscle to keep in shape,” said Jan Devitt, 50th SW community support coordinator, and training participant. “This training is an excellent way to learn how we can do things more efficiently and effectively.

It’s backed with years of research and role-play examples for learning the information in a comprehensive manner.”

. E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. — The world has seemingly plunged into unprecedented turmoil, with fear and uncertainty driving behavior that would unlikely never be seen in “normal times.”

COVID-19, or the coronavirus, has thrust the U.S. into a state of mind that has been at times unsettling, but at least in some instances, encouraging.

I would call upon anyone reading this to latch on to the chance to encourage. Amidst all this uncertainty, we are all presented with opportunities to step up and do small things that might make a huge impact on the people we work with or others in our community — all without putting yourself or others at risk of exposure to the illness. We can all make a difference and make this time a little less challenging for someone else.

It is even more important to do so during periods of crisis of uncertainty.

This might also work in some neighborhoods. There are likely people in your neighborhood who are scared or lonely. People who may greatly appreciate someone checking in on them to make sure they’re okay. There’s no need to put anyone at risk — ring the bell, keep your distance and just check in to see if there’s anything they might need.

If that seems daunting, leave a note. Just let them know you’re there to help if needed.

We can all make a difference and make this time a little less challenging for someone else.

Checking In With telework being authorized and encouraged, people accustomed to going into an office every day are now modifying their living spaces into workspaces. For many, this might be a welcomed change of pace. For others, though, coming into the office might be their only social interaction. Check in with the people you work with, even if it’s “only” sending a text message.

Some people may be too proud or too shy to reach out themselves, or even feel like they’re burdening others by doing it.

We are taught to look after our fellow Airmen when they might need it, regardless of whether they actively seek assistance.

Sharing is Caring Did you get enough toilet paper to supply a barracks for a month? Why not offer a roll or two to the single mother in your neighborhood? COVID-19 impact on Schriever Air Force Base Staff report 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The first Schriever member tested positive for COVID-19.

A 50th Space Wing government civilian has been in isolation at home since March 17 and is receiving care in accordance with Centers for Disease Control, Force Health Protection and 21st Medical Group guidelines.

“We cannot afford complacency within our team.”

“This is exactly why we have taken the serious precautions we have to limit further transmission of the Coronavirus,” said Col. James Smith, installation commander. “We remain committed to preserving our team members’ ability to provide for our nation’s defense and sustain current worldwide military missions.”

Officials are researching the details regarding this exposure. All known contacts have been teleworking since March 17 as a precaution.

Additionally, Smith declared a Public Health Emergency at Schriever. This will largely be transparent to base members as leadership leaned forward in closing base facilities, restricting movement and implementing isolation and quarantine where appropriate.

existing measures across the state and in direct consideration of our installation’s critical mission sets,” said Smith. “Our national space-based capabilities allow our military leaders to see the battlespace with clarity, provide early warning, strike with precision, navigate with accuracy, communicate with certainty, understand weather impacts and operate anywhere in the world.”

Leaders continue to encourage good hygiene practices as the best preventive measure to control the spread of viruses.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Schriever Air Force Base leaders are implementing changes in daily operations and asking Airmen to practice social distancing, quarantine or isolation measures to slow transmission of the virus.

These changes play a vital role in protecting Airmen and maintaining the base’s missions, but may prove difficult for some.

“This is a big stressor that can have similar affects like any other stressor might have on your life,” said Maj. Louis Pagano, 21st Medical Squadron director of psychological health. “It’s normal to have some concerns about obtaining food, personal supplies, taking time off work and fulfilling family obligations.”

According to the American Psychological Association, common reactions to social distancing, quarantine and isolation include fear, anxiety, depression, boredom, anger and irritability.

“I can’t emphasize enough that the disruption in your routine can be a big downer,” he said. “We don’t want people to get into this funk where they stop showering, or start thinking, ‘I don’t have to leave my house today. I’m not going to change out of my pajamas. I’m not going to brush my teeth.’ Those little, tiny behaviors that we just kind of forget about, those really start to add up over time. That’s when depression and isolation really sink in.”

To help combat these feelings, he recommends reaching out to healthcare providers and authorities for current and accurate information on the disease, its diagnosis and treatment.

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions,” Pagano said. “Clear communication with a healthcare provider may help reduce the distress associated with social distancing or being at home unexpectedly for longer periods of time.”

Pagano said obtaining information about COVID-19 is good to a point, but consuming too much can worsen any negative feelings or worry that might already exist. APA continued page 7 | STRESSORS

Trusted organizations for information on COVID-19 include the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the World Health Organization. Changes to base operations and updates can be found on the base Facebook page and on the Schriever page of the AF Connect app.

“Just because you’re socially isolated from your peers

Changes have been made to nearly every facility on base, including the clinic, in order to protect Schriever teammates.

“We want to make sure everyone knows we’re still here for you, and there’s lots of other community and national resources that are here for you as well,” Pagano said. “We’re still offering services, with the exception of Health Promotion’s services, here at the 21st Medical Squadron, but the manner in which they’re delivered may be a little different since we’re a healthcare facility and we have to follow certain rules and precautions. Individuals are encouraged to call the appointment line with questions.”

If someone’s at a significant risk of harming themselves or others, the same services are still available. They can go into the clinic, call 911, call the national suicide hotline or present to the emergency room.

“Even though face-to-face services may be limited for others in lieu of virtual or telephonic appointments, we’ll still see individuals at greater risk for suicide faceto-face,” he said.

Individuals who aren’t at a significant risk and still want care can call the clinic. The clinic staff will help find the right resources or schedule appointments for the soonest date possible.

“Another great resource is Military OneSource,” said Pagano. “Military OneSource is a good resource for folks because they’ve actually been doing telehealth for some time. So while the rest of the county and the country are starting to limit or change the delivery method of services, they already have resources in place where you can text, talk or video chat with a provider.”

Colorado has a lot of beautiful parks and hiking trails, all of which you can use while safely staying an acceptable distance away from other people that might be there.”

Additionally, he urges Team Schriever members to stay connected with others and maintain a healthy social life.

“Just because you’re socially isolated from your peers doesn’t mean you have to be socially isolated from friends and family,” he said. “Use Skype, FaceTime, Google Duo or texting. Call that friend you haven’t spoken to in months. Call the relative you’ve always said, ‘Man, I wish I had time to catch up with them.’”

Schriever stays operational despite COVID-19

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing remains committed to maintaining space superiority year-round by continuing its essential missions to ensure it remains the ‘Master of Space.’

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Airman 1st Class Brice Brewington, 4th Space Operations Squadron extremely high frequency satellite systems operator is still contributing to the United States Space Force’s mission.

“It’s critical we continue the mission during trying times,” Brewington said. “Although there is a pandemic here on Earth, there’s no pandemic in space and our adversaries aren’t going to stop trying to gain superiority from us any time soon.”

As of March 25, there are two confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Schriever AFB. The 50th SW commander has enacted multiple safety measures, such as social distancing, minimum manning and temperature checks at the restricted area portals to protect Airmen and the base’s critical operations.

“We need to stay mission-ready rain, sleet, snow, hail and even during a pandemic to complete our mission at the most elite level possible,” Brewington said.

To minimize transmission, 4th SOPS Airmen use cleaning wipes and sanitation spray to clean their workstations.

Additionally, accountability is taken daily to make certain the squadron’s Airmen are feeling healthy and well.

“I know the service I help provide is critical for [service members] downrange,” Brewington said. “I take my job very seriously, lives depend on it and we can’t let a pandemic slow down our operations.”

The 2nd Space Operations Squadron is one of the United States Space Force’s premier units. They operate the GPS mission, providing a global utility to Earth’s population for free.

“No matter what, we need to ensure this mission continues so the American people and the world know they can depend on us to be the gold standard in precision, navigation and timing,” said Lt. Col Stephen Toth, 2nd SOPS commander.

Some of the services that use GPS to operate are ambulances, hospitals, police departments and fire departments.

“It would make a global pandemic that much worse if we were to go down,” Toth said. “It could prevent a lot of the day-to-day things we rely on from happening, it could be catastrophic.”

According to a recent study commissioned by U.S. Department of Commerce on the economic impact of GPS, a 30 day outage could range from a 30 to 45 billion dollar economic loss. Additionally, GPS supports 14 of 16 essential industries in the U.S. “We’ll remain reliable no matter what the condition the world is in,” Toth said. “Whether it be a pandemic, hurricane, tornado or any other type of crisis, we have plans and training for whatever threat we may face so the mission doesn’t stop.”

directly conducting operations can’t telework. They need to be in a sensitive compartmented information facility or restricted area in a secured area to perform the mission.

This so Airmen can access specific terminals and networks only accessible on the operations floor.

“The American people can count on space and they can count on our military to continue to provide the level of capability that’s expected no matter what’s going on in the world,” Toth said. “In times of crisis, people shouldn’t have to question whether we’ll be here or not, because we will and the mission won’t stop.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The United States Space Force hosted a roadshow at the fitness center here March 5 to update Airmen on the future of the newest service.

Brig. Gen. DeAnna Burt, USSF director of operations and communications, discussed the swift stand up of the service and how Airmen are a part of history.

“Those who join this brand-new service

will be a part of history.”

“No one thought that four months later we’d be standing up the U.S. Space Force,” Burt said. “This is a large, historical adventure. We haven’t set up a new service since 1947. You are all a part of history.”

The idea of the USSF isn’t new. For decades, the government discussed the potential to create a Space Force to protect its citizens. They’re now putting those efforts into motion.

“Why (do we need a Space Force?)”

Burt asked. “One word: threats. Space is embedded day to day in our American way of war and American way of life.

The enemy knows that and is looking to take away that advantage. So we have to protect and defend it.”

Developing the necessary forces to fight against those threats won’t occur overnight. Over the next year, the USSF plans to begin structuring the service with talent.

Col. David Stanfield, USSF director of manpower, personnel and services, detailed how Airmen who join the Space Force must commit to two years of active duty service should they transfer to the service, which can be served concurrently with their existing ADSCs. The transfer into the Space Force, however, isn’t mandatory; and is a decision for Airmen to make.

“No one will be forced to join the Space Force,” Stanfield said. “That’s why you have to apply.”

Stanfield also recognized that many notable Airmen may choose not to join the Space Force. He knows both the Air Force and Space Force will bridge the gap accordingly to keep both services balanced.

“For readiness reasons, we need an equal distribution of talent,” said Stanfield.

Benefits Airmen receive in the Air Force will follow them into the Space Force should they choose to join. No interruption in pay will occur to those who transfer and Airmen will still earn their GI Bill.

While Stanfield illustrated the benefits Airmen will continue to receive and how Airmen can join, he also wanted them to be aware of the importance of the standup of the Space Force.

“This is a brand new service — the first in 70 years,” Stanfield said. “Those who join this brand-new service will be a part of history.”

Prior to answering questions from Team Schriever, Burt echoed Stanfield’s sentiments about the magnitude of the Space Force.

“This is an exciting time,” Burt said.

“If you’re not excited, you don’t have a pulse.”

OVER-THE-COUNTER PROGRAM SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY The 21st Medical Squadron pharmacy has suspended the over-the-counter medication program indefinitely to ensure patients are receiving the appropriate level of care and assessment due to ongoing events.

Blood donation is not considered a group activity, and blood donation centers need help to ensure those who need blood can receive it. Even the Surgeon General has asked Americans to keep donating at blood centers — just so long as they’re not sick.

However, one healthy donation can save up to three lives. If you can give, or you usually give at blood drives, there are blood centers in most cities (including Cheyenne) that can take walk-in donations.

To be clear, the message given here is in no way a recommendation to bypass the advice of the CDC. Social Distancing is crucial to get us past all of this, and individuals should follow the instructions of medical professionals to keep exposure and infections to a minimum. But, let’s not use distancing as an excuse to ignore the problems faced by those in our workspaces or our communities.

Let’s act like how we’d want other someone to act toward us if we needed a hand.

Take the time to make sure your neighbors, your coworkers and others in your extended community are making it through all of this.

While this is a horrible, unprecedented crisis, we can make excellence in all we do something that applies to more than just the mission at work.
