Schriever AFB COVID-19 Status Staff report 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Covid-19 Impact: It is critical that all personnel take COVID-19 seriously and comply with direction. Minimizing the risk of exposure to operations and mission essential personnel is paramount.

Stay engaged with email, social media, the AF Connect App Schriever page and other communication methods.

If you are symptomatic or fall into a category requiring isolation, coordinate with supervisors and stay home.

If you have been in the following counties in Colorado in the last nine days, please self-isolate.

• Eagle • Summit • Pitkin • Gunnison Operations center access shall be limited to mission essential personnel only. No personnel shall enter an operations center if symptomatic.

All team members should exercise social distancing on and off duty to the maximum extent possible.

Telework operations are encouraged for all personnel on telework agreements when job duties allow.

Meetings should be minimized with VTCs and teleconferences being used to the maximum extent.

Large gatherings should also be postponed or cancelled.

The Satellite Dish’s rear dining room will be designated for ops crew only. We’ll also be going to take-out only as soon as we confirm availability of supplies.

All personnel should be regularly using hand sanitizer and washing their hands, especially prior to using common areas.

Team Schriever preps for outdoors with Camper Safety course

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The 50th Force Support Squadron’s Outdoor Recreation department readies Airmen for the outdoors with its Camper Safety classes Wednesdays at Bldg. 805, 8-9 a.m.

Classes, which are free to those who attend, run through September and offer Airmen the opportunity to learn to camp with limited funds. Courses also provide Airmen the chance to become knowledgeable of the outdoors and learn to maintain their campers and trailers, which ODR rents to Airmen.

“Campers also provide opportunities for Airmen to explore Colorado

in multiple ways.”

“There’s a lot more than just, get out and go have fun,” said Juli Yim, 50th FSS director of outdoor recreation. “In this class, we can answer almost any questions Airmen have. We can take care of those concerns and make sure they know what they need to be safe so they can have a stress-free vacation.”

The class is one hour and provides a video element as well as lessons on camping safety basics. Included in those teachings are properly connecting a propane tank

“People think, ‘Oh, I’ll just hook it up and get on the road,”’ Yim said.

“It is that simple, but there are a few things you want to double check. You have to make sure you’re prepared for the outdoors and that you have the right-sized ball for the hitch. It’s also important that your break releases are hooked up properly. Colorado state law requires that anything you’re towing over 3,000-pounds has a break release.”

“The course is good for three years after you take it,” Prather said. “It can be a hassle to (rent) every year, especially because this course will pretty much be the same (next year). There isn’t any hesitation with wanting to rent because you know they’ll know what to do because they’ve already taken the class.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as of March 17, Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, has gone to minimal manning to protect the health and well being of its Airmen. Because of minimal manning, the usually full parking lots are nearly empty.

Airmen who are checking temperatures of operators use electronic thermometers that use infrared technology to get an accurate reading. Testers are taking steps to minimize contact and maintain a safe distance between individuals while temperature is recorded to ensure the safety of both parties involved.

Schriever representatives check Team Schriever members’ temperature before admitting them into the Restricted Area to ensure Airmen are safe and the base continues it’s critical mission. As of March 18, the 50th SW has zero confirmed cases of COVID-19 and remains committed to ensuring the safety of it’s Airmen.

Team Schriever members excel during Lazyman Triathlon

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron’s 18th annual Lazyman Triathlon presented a physical and mental challenge for Team Schriever members in February.

The event — which had 89 Airmen complete the triathlon out of 198 participants — required competitors to swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles and run 26.2 miles within one month. Those who completed the triathlon in the allotted earned a free T-shirt.

Some Airmen complete in triathlons throughout the year and use the Lazyman to complement their efforts.

“My goal was to do double the Lazyman,” said Lt. Col. Beth Stargardt, 19th Space Operations Squadron commander.

“I knew I could do a single (Lazyman) pretty easily. I wanted to challenge myself — a challenge on top of the challenge.”

Stargardt, who competed in the backstroke as a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy, completed the run and swim portion in 11 and 15 days, respectively.

“I took it slow and steady,” Stargardt said. “I plotted out a course and I’d do two, three or four miles of running every day and then fit in 10-20 miles of biking as often as I could and catch up on the weekends. My dog Sasha ran all the miles with me as well.”

Stargardt completed her cycling in 18 days and rode more than 115 additional miles on the bike, even though she preferred the run and swim block of the triathlon.

“You have to dedicate a little extra time to complete the cycling portion,” she said. “It takes more effort to get out to do a 10-, 20-mile bike ride versus running for 2-3 miles.”

Meanwhile, Maj. Jeffrey Lucy, U.S. Space

Command Joint Intelligence and Security collections manager, cycled an additional 451 miles on top of the required 112 miles.

“I do a lot of triathlons,” Lucy said. “I (workout) consistently throughout the year. I don’t do it just to get the T-shirt. I try to keep on top of my fitness. It seems like (Schriever has) a lot of promotions for multi-sport activities. I’m looking forward to doing more if (Schriever has) them this year.”

Rather than battle the February cold, Lucy completed majority of his mileage at home to stave off the monotony of riding outdoors.

“I use an app that’s like a video game for biking,” Lucy said. “You bike around these virtual worlds and it tailors the resistance on the unit your bike is hooked up to. I tracked my mileage that way.”

Lucy completed his swimming in 15 days and running in 20 days to finish the event and plans to continue his regimen throughout the year regardless of an event taking place at Schriever Air Force Base.

“I’m gearing up for a few events this summer with a lot of long-distance, gravel bike races,” he said. “I think I have one off-road triathlon I’m signed up for and I may do a few others.”
