CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Like many of us, my first experience leading teams came through sports. Unlike natural athletes, I wasn’t tall or fast, which led me to focus on wrestling. It was a good fit because from day one the coaching staff emphasized the importance of hard work. Our head coach would incessantly scream, “There is no secret to success; it’s hard work!” As it turned out, my coach knew what he was talking about.

That phrase drove me to make sure I outworked any opponent I stepped on the mat against. The effort I put in led to results, but what I didn’t know was that my priorities were off.

That realization came during college application time when I experienced a rude awakening. While I was thriving athletically, my lack of hard work in the classroom was exposed. Top-notch institutions were letting my coach know I would not receive a scholarship because I did not meet their academic standards. With a “vector check” from my parents and coaches, I focused my competitive spirit into the classroom.

I still remember the look on my coach’s face when I let him in on the secret, the answers are all right in the book!

My failures in the classroom were not a matter of ability, but priority. I had never valued being the best in the classroom, so I didn’t put the work in to be successful. This

revelation highlighted the importance of prioritization and changed how I attacked life.

Once I had the right mindset, I sometimes struggled to apply it. One such instance was my first deployment. As a first lieutenant, I was shipped to the Middle East where I would spend the next year embedded with the Army. I was part of a three-member team responsible for the dayto-day grind needed to execute approximately $4 billion to help build up the Iraqi infrastructure. We did not have the elaborate systems I had in Garrison. Instead, much of

50th Space Wing hosts third iWAR panel

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing hosted its third Innovative Warfighters Advancing Readiness panel March 3.

The iWAR panel serves as a platform for anyone in the wing to submit an idea that’s beneficial to Team Schriever directly to base leadership.

“We thrive off the ideas you all bring forward,” said Col. James Smith, 50th SW commander. “Thank you for taking the initiative to try to do things better.”

“With the standup of Space Force, there’s going to be a lot of transitions

and a lot of change.”

Five Airmen presented their ideas to a panel consisting of Smith, Col. Jack Fischer, 50th SW vice commander, Chief Master Sgt. Boston Alexander, 50th SW command chief master sergeant, and Ronald Gevry, 50th SW director of staff.

To start the panel off, 1st Lt. Brett Dunn, 2nd Space Operations Squadron operations flight assistant flight commander, proposed the implementation of light therapy for crew members by adding “Happy Light” desk lamps to the 2nd SOPS operating floor.

If the lights make positive impacts on the squadron member’s physical and mental health, which will be reported via surveys, Dunn proposed they expand the distribution of the lights base wide, participation being optional.

Next, Myron Bryant, 50th Space Communications Squadron and 22nd SOPS security manager, proposed developing a plan to allow the use of common access cards, rather than restricted area badges, for access into the RA. Schriever increases Health Protection Condition level Staff report 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Schriever officials decided March 9 to raise its Health Protection Condition level in response to increased COVID-19 concerns across the nation.

There have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Schriever AFB.

 

“We are aligning the Health Protection Condition with existing precautionary measures, and are educating base personnel in preventing transmission,” said Col. James Smith, installation commander. “We continue to monitor the situation. Our leadership team is getting the necessary processes in place should the situation warrant an additional increase in Health Protection Condition.”

Good hygiene practices are the best preventive measure to control the spread of viruses. Personnel are encouraged to wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid contact with those who have been sick, seek medical care when you feel ill and disinfect frequently-touched surfaces to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses.

Schriever members who are ill are encouraged to call the appointment line at 719-524-2273 option 1 for care and social distancing, which means staying home and not attending large gatherings until care is accessed.

50th Operations Support Squadron trainer gets upgrade

By Staff Sgt. Matthew Coleman-Foster 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Operations Support Squadron is upgrading their training facility to enhance their capability to support more mission sets.

The 50th OSS, with the assistance of the Space Training Acquisition Office, is renovating their current trainer area to support missions for the 4th Space Operations Squadron.

“We will eventually support our operational control system training mission,” said 2nd Lt. Caleb Guarino, 50th OSS resource manager. “This upgrade will offer support for missions such as upgraded early warning radar space based infrared systems. It’s a platform that allows any satellite training mission to be loaded on to it, it’s an emulator.”

The area was originally unclassified, but is now open storage secret allowing for more advanced training and crew readiness validations.

“The goal is to make our training scenarios as realistic as we can with the operational systems,” said Capt. Heather Oliver, 50th OSS flight commander. “By bringing more classified materials into the training environment, students will be able to see more of the issues faced in real-world situations.” Squadrons will be able to have an entire crew with different positions in one area, just like on the operations floor, and test how they perform in high-end and stressful environments.”

There are currently 56 consoles across six classrooms and six reserved for instructors and students.

Capt. Ryan McVay, 50th OSS operations flight commander, is responsible for all the instructors in the squadron. He said the updated SSTs are some of the best training developments he has seen come out of the 50th OSS. “The ability to train up to 10 students simultaneously has allowed the OSS to improve without sacrificing quality of instruction,” McVay said. “The intuitive design of the software also allows new instructors to be brought up to speed quickly and easily, enhancing the overall training abilities of the group. Our jobs as instructors have been made better in a variety of ways with the addition of these next-generation training suites.”

The unit is also developing distributed mission operationsspace, which will allow trainers from different squadrons on the SST to interact with each other. Currently, only 4th

SOPS conducts all of their training on the SST and evaluations are conducted to certify space operators.

“A key difference between the SST and our old simulators is the SST is versatile,” Guarino said. “We’re able to pull up any system on the SST and it performs quickly and is very reliable.”

The SSTs have undergone research, development and sustainment here since 2011 and the unit is constantly adding new sections and features to it.

“We had to abide by some rules to make it open source secret, including following mod-like procedures,” Guarino said. “That has been in the works for the last two and a half years and was finished March 4.”

The contract for the project is approximately $110 million with the unit still undergoing mission specific vender plug-ins, which resemble having an application running on a phone.

While the 50th OSS maintains the SSTs and works on the research and development side of the program, they are available to all of the operations squadrons who MSVPs have applying to them.

“This program will provide more than initial training,” Oliver said. “It is continuing development and as we continue to train personnel with the warfighting mentality, the SSTs will help. It will give people the opportunity to train in the same environment and with the SSTs, trial and error is OK.”

This early combination of being a downrange Airmen, husband and father set the tone for the coming years… it was going to be hard work and prioritization would be paramount.

To this day, I still struggle with prioritization. As a high-schooler, my coach counseled me, “It doesn’t matter that you’re a state champion wrestler if you can’t get into college.” As an officer, generals have counseled me, “It doesn’t matter if you become a general, if you lose your family along the way.” Life is demanding no matter where you are in the journey. Every role we take requires us to give time, energy and effort, but how much we give to each role is a matter of prioritiza-

tion. Given that reality, it’s important to understand what our personal priorities are and then to surround ourselves with Wingmen who are willing to challenge us to keep them. Communicate with your leadership, friends, and family what your values are so that you have multiple avenues of feedback when your actions fall out of alignment with your priorities. This approach will help you determine where you need to put in the hard work with your limited bandwidth.

Schriever innovators attend AFA Air Warfare Symposium

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing sent a group of innovators to the Air Force Association Air Warfare Symposium in Orlando, Florida Feb. 24-28.

The AFA Air Warfare Symposium is a three-day event for the aerospace and defense industry geared toward the professional development of Air Force officers, enlisted members, civilians, retirees and veterans, according to afa.org. However, the Airmen from the 50th SW spent five days in Florida, having the opportunity to visit Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on top of going to the symposium to understand the 50th SW’s impact on a larger scale.

“It’s exciting seeing wing leadership taking innovation seriously and providing opportunities for Airmen to come up with good ideas and implement them,” said Maj. Samuel McCabe, 50th Space Communications Squadron director of operations, who attended the symposium. “I would challenge folks to have courage and bring their ideas up to wing leadership.”

McCabe won top innovator for the 50th SW at the latest Innovative Warfighters Advancing Readiness Panel and represented the wing at the symposium. McCabe’s innovation addresses a national intelligence problem to defend Department of Defense weapon systems and despite receiving pushback at first, his innovation is currently being used by the 16th Air Force and the Air Force Cryptologic Office.

“Figure out what right looks like and stick to your guns,” McCabe said. “You’re going to get pushback. People are going to say, ‘that’s not how we do things here,’ or ‘In my career I’ve never seen it done that way.’ But if you stick to ‘This problem exists’ and ‘I have a solution,’ you’d be shocked how far you can go. I can’t tell you how many people shot down my idea before it got approved.”

Tech. Sgt. Patrick Hughlett, 3rd Space Experimentation Squadron weapons and tactics flight chief, also attended the symposium. Additionally, he works with the new 50th Combat Development Division which was established less than eight months ago. “[The CDD] is looking for ideas from the folks who are doing the operations to solve problems,” he said. “We’re asking Airmen what they need to do their job better and letting them work with developers to come to that solution.”

of life, the CDD is operator-focused and mission-oriented to enhance the space domain as a whole.

Any Airman assigned to Schriever who has an innovative idea that can affect operations can submit their ideas to the CDD and possibly receive funding and professional assistance to turn their idea into a reality.

Hughlett and McCabe weren’t the only Schriever Airmen at the symposium. Other attendees from the 50th SW included: outstanding Airmen, noncommissioned officer and the group chiefs at Schriever.

“Being able to hear the Chief of Staff [of the Air Force] and the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force speak was incredible,” Hughlett said. “I hope to take the lessons I’ve

learned and inspire my Airmen with them.”

Hughlett and McCabe said they learned the importance of strong leadership, differentiating what’s important versus what’s urgent, and taking care of Airmen.

“Don’t be OK with the status quo, be willing to modernize and change processes,” Hughlett said. “One of the main issues in the Air Force is we’re constantly updating our systems [but not] our processes. It takes us at the tactical level to do that. If something’s not right, take the time to fix it. It starts with you.”

TAPS Education Track

The TAPS Education Track is for transitioning members pursuing higher education. The course is scheduled 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 26-27. This track focuses on topics such as how to achieve academic success, how to research and compare institutions and how to finance higher education. After completing the TAPS Education Track, service members

will be prepared to complete an application to an accredited institution, schedule a session with a counselor from an academic institution or meet individually with education counselors as needed.

Informed Decision Course

The 50th Force Support Squadron is scheduled to host an Informed Decision Course 9 a.m. — noon March 31, in Building 210, Room 310. The course is designed to enhance knowledge of Air Force benefits. The goal is to ensure personnel obtain needed information in order to make sound decisions for themselves and their family. First term Airmen and second term Airmen 12-15 months prior to their date of separation are required to attend pending involuntary separation.
