Air Force finalizes PT uniform design; will begin production process

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio — After numerous tests and feedback from Airmen around the world, the Air Force Uniform Office has finalized the design of the new Physical Training Gear, or PTG, uniform and is preparing to begin the production process.

This is the first update to the PT uniform in more than 16 years, and over 150 Airmen participated in testing the uniform.

“Our main requirement from Air Force leaders was to develop a PT uniform that people really wanted to wear and is as good as if not better than commercially available athletic wear,” said Tracy Roan, chief of the Air Force Uniform Office, which is aligned under the Agile Combat Support Directorate’s Human Systems Division. “The new uniform now includes all of the great performance features that you find in athletic wear today.”

In addition to improving performance, the uniform is designed to accommodate various athletic interests.

“In the past, there was one uniform for all athletic pursuits, whether you were running, playing basketball or lifting weights,” said Col. Paul Burger, 88th Air Base Wing Mission Support Group Commander, one of the test participants and an official with the Air Force Marathon.

“The approach the Air Force has now taken is to develop a uniform that is earmarked for runners or running and one that is better designed for some of those other athletic activities.”

With the new gear, Airmen will be issued a jacket, a pair of pants, a T-shirt and shorts.

The ensemble will have improved fabrics that include soft, quick drying, and have antimicrobial technology that helps with moisture and odor control.

Other significant changes include the design of the jacket.

“With the ‘notorious’ track jacket, we’ve made updates to the fabric to minimize the noise it makes during workouts,” said 2nd Lt. Maverick Wilhite, the Office’s Program Manager for PT gear. “The jacket will be sleeker-looking, so instead of having a bulky jacket, you’ll have a fit and tailored design. In addition, the jacket will have a zipper chest pocket for holding things like your CAC [common access card].”

The workout ensemble will include two variations of shorts; a shorter running style, and a longer all-purpose short. The all-purpose shorts are unlined knit with zipper hip pockets you can close. The runners are a lightweight stretch woven fabric with mesh side panels to improve airflow and improved stretch liner for modesty. The performance shirt is designed to be untucked during workouts or tucked as required by the command.

Overall, the entire PTG uniform has updated styling with stretch materials to provide comfort and increase performance.

The new uniform will be available to Airmen in 2022, and there will be a four-year transition period for mandatory wear.

Anytime is a good time for tea

Russ Johnson 86th Maintenance Squadron RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — If you are a tea lover or have been around the tea culture, it should be no surprise to you when it comes to the social significance placed on serving and having tea. Tea symbolizes hospitality, community, and family tradition.

Tea connoisseur Mary Lou Heiss once said, “A simple cup of tea is far from a simple matter.” Having tea can mean sharing joy and sorrow, solving familial or business problems, or simply being present and experiencing life completely.

Although a seemingly simple act, sharing a cup of tea is anything but. It is intentionally taking the time to connect and address something important.

Leading a team can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be complicated calculus formula — basic algebra works fine. Too often we get caught up in thinking we must read the latest leadership books or take courses to improve our organization and personal skills.

Other times we find ourselves quoting inspirational figures like David Goggins, Jocko Willink, or Simon Sinek to plant seeds of ownership and confidence within our followers so we can see whose eyes light up with bewilderment and inspiration. Even though these resources can provide useful tools and additional insights, they don’t get to the root of connecting with our people.

One way to make a positive impact and connect with your team is to intentionally give your time with an open heart and open ears. Sitting down to have a cup of tea (or coffee for those who don’t like tea) with someone offers a time to chat, connect, and cultivate trust. It provides a space in which the chaos can be put on pause, even if it is just for a moment.

According to the article “Connect, then Lead” from the Harvard Business Review, there is a growing amount of research that suggests the way to influence and lead is to begin with warmth.

“Warmth is the conduit of influence: It facilitates trust and the communication and absorption of ideas. Even a few small nonverbal signals — a nod, a smile, an open gesture — can show people you’re pleased to be in their company and attentive to their concerns.

Prioritizing warmth helps you connect immediately with those around you, demonstrating that you hear them, understand them, and can be trusted by them.”

Thinking back on a conversation I had with one of my Airmen over a year ago — he told me that he finds it odd when leaders want their Airmen to automatically follow them when those leaders don’t take the time to get to know their Airmen and build trust. JTF-SD member's resilience, perseverance lead to doctorate degree

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Getting an education is among the motivations for many who serve in the nation’s armed services today.

That wasn’t necessarily the case for Michigan native and University of Michigan alum Lt. Col. Thomas “Keith” Wilson, Joint Task Force-Space Defense, Assistant Director of Intelligence.

During the day, Wilson worked as a law clerk and at night completed the majority of his Political Science and History major coursework. After graduation, he got certified to teach 7-12th grade students and began teaching high school social studies. His role grew when he established his school’s Junior Reserves Officers’ Training Corps program.

“Then I started to wonder, I’m talking and teaching about a world I haven’t really seen so I decided to join the service,” Wilson said. “I figured I’d serve four years and then go back to teaching.”

That was 20 years ago. In the meantime, the intelligence officer has supported a variety of missions including airborne intelligence and signals intelligence, completed a squadron command tour and worked in a variety of operations centers before arriving at his current assignment in the fall of 2020.

During his assignment at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., the nearby Creighton University was offering 50% tuition for military members. When combined with tuition assistance, it came out to a couple hundred dollars per credit hour prompting Wilson to pursue his master’s degree in International Relations.

“I was able to finish my core classes during my assignment there and finished my thesis later,” he said.

Now two degrees in, the intel officer was selected for Air Command and Staff College in-residence to meet his intermediate development education milestone, a point at which an unexpected opportunity presented itself.

more than 150 pages of text a day which then had to be synthesized in order to be prepared for the next day’s classes. The first two years is filled with coursework. The third year is then dedicated to comprehensive exams and the research project.

“The exams cover all affairs across the entire field, all perspectives and paradigms, you get one day to make your case that you’re proficient,” said Wilson. “Most people fail at least one of the exams but I passed both of them on the first attempt.”

Now focused solely on his dissertation, Wilson worked to establish his four-member committee and began his data gathering.

“It didn’t bear out the way I thought it would,” he said. “It wasn’t insurmountable — Lt. Col. After a few weeks he was notified he had earned his PhD, joining 4.5 million Americans as of 2019 Census data. Across the Armed Services only about 109,000 have advanced degrees, masters and doctorates included, according to Statista data for 2019.

“It was pretty cool, I never expected to have that opportunity,” he said. “I always tried to perform well to put myself in positions to seize opportunities but I’m lucky.”

Though his education doesn’t directly tie to the work he does for the JTF-SD, he said he uses the processes daily.

“Thinking through problems, working through arguments, challenging thoughts and the rigors of process help us no matter what function we’re doing,” said Wilson.

Additionally, Wilson pursued education at each level while working full time and supporting his family which includes his wife, whom he met in high school, and raising two girls who are now about the age of his former students.

“That’s one of the cooler things, it’s taken a while but I hope it inspires them,” he said. “They have been supportive throughout, with the military and school I’ve missed things throughout their formative years but my hope is they use it to inspire them to achieve their goals.”

Wilson has no intention of pursuing any additional degrees, yet.

“I am not entirely sure what triggered my desire to serve,” Wilson said thinking about his start 20 years ago. “I recall being driven by a desire to contribute to something bigger than myself. I am happy, my family is happy, there’s no reason to change. I am thankful to the countless people along the way who helped mold me into who I am today.”

Something as simple as walking around and con-

necting with his people built trust and credibility — he took the time to show his concern. Credibility starts with the words that come out of your mouth and ends with the actions you take next.

This is the reason some of us would rather take out our own trash or take 30 minutes every week “picking up brass” on foreign object debris walks with the Airmen.

These small actions are the building blocks to creating an organization based on trust and understanding.

Showing personal acts of humility can go a long way if done for the right reasons. John Wooden, a former National Championship winning UCLA basketball coach, would sweep his gym floor every week.

It was this act of self-service and humility that showed his players that he was not afraid of doing the little things to support the team, making a huge impact within.

You don’t have to have tea time with people in your organization in order to build trust and connect. It can be checking ID cards at the gate, picking up FOD on the flight line, or sharing a meal. The point is to find something that helps you connect with your team in a meaningful way. These simple acts are far from being simple — they can mean the world to someone. But… tea is always a good idea.

Faces of Space: Spc4 Htein Naing

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Guardians, although all supporting the same goals, come from many different backgrounds. Spc4 Htein Naing, Space Delta 8, 50th Operations Support Squadron senior enlisted instructor, is no exception.

Naing’s parents were both born in Burma –present day Myanmar — but met in Japan. Naing was born in Japan and lived there until the age of 7 when his family moved to Queens, New York.

His diverse background gave him an appreciation for traveling.

“I’ve been back to Japan twice since I came to the US, and it always feels like a second home to me,” Naing said. “I’ve also visited Thailand and Myanmar, but my current travel goals for this year — COVID-19 circumstances permitting — are to experience some European cultures and hopefully see another country in Asia.”

While always seeking to see the world, Naing has picked up another hobby that makes him feel right at home.

“I like to cook a lot of Chinese and Japanese dishes because we [Naing and his girlfriend] miss home-cooked Asian food,” said Naing. “Our favorite dish to cook by far has been ramen, but we hope to be able to cook or experience foods from all over the world in the future.”

Naing shared what growing up in a Burmese family born in Japan was like and how it has influenced him today.

said. “I think it’s easier for me to able to understand other’s perspectives. It’s especially beneficial in this team dynamic and our line of work because everyone is

different and have different upbringings but we’re expected to mesh as a cohesive unit to get the mission done.”

A close coworker said he has witnessed Naing’s personality and upbringing impact his work.

“Naing has been able to leverage his diverse background in many situations,” said Capt. Dion Tchokreff, 50th OSS, staff instructor in training.

“As a staff instructor in the 50th OSS, Naing has trained many new operators. Now, he serves as one of the three senior instructors who are responsible for developing new staff instructors.

Because of his diversity, Naing relates to so many people, and he has used this as a tool in every position I’ve worked with him in.”

Whether in or out of uniform, Naing is proud of his heritage and works hard to represent it.

“Being raised by my Burmese parents, they taught me to embrace that grind and work our way up and become the best,” said Naing. ”I think that motivated me to do my best and essentially let my job do the talking. But I hope I am able to represent the Burmese people, get us out there and show that we can accomplish anything if we challenge ourselves and work hard.”

Naing became the first in his family to go to college and to serve in the military, he also has a line number and is soon to promote to sergeant.

New Boston community Heritage Hike

NEW BOSTON AIR FORCE STATION, N.H. — New Boston Air Force Station hosted a Heritage Hike with the local community to recognize the installation’s role as one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad, Feb. 20.

Members from New Boston AFS and the local community attended the day-long hike toward the remnants of the Melendy home, which consisted of some granite stones forming a cellar and the barn’s foundation. Once the group reached the Melendy Farmstead, Steve Najjar, 23rd Space Operations Squadron natural resources planner, told of the site’s significance as one of the final stops on the Underground Railroad, an organized network to assist enslaved people escape to freedom in the North, as well as the history of Amherst, New Hampshire.

“Luther and Lucinda Melendy were heavily involved with the abolitionist movement,” said Najjar. “They really put themselves out there. For their stance on slavery, they were excommunicated from their church. I think it’s just significant to

On the 2,849 square mile densely-wooded station, there are more than 30 historic archeological sites, one of which

is the Melendy Farmstead. Najjar explained that as the stewards of the many archaeological sites on New Boston AFS, the installation works to learn about its history and share it with others.

“Through the years, we've made efforts to celebrate the history surrounding this site and its association with the abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad,” said Najjar. “So, as part of our overall land management and cultural resources stewardship, we're sharing access [with the community] to those historically significant sites.”

Lt. Col. Daniel Highlander, Space Delta 6, 23rd SOPS commander, said he has a vision to increase local partnership opportunities with the local community.

“The base has been around since the early 1940s as a practice area for bombers and fighter planes before it turned into a satellite tracking station in 1959,” Highlander said. “The local community has very limited insight into what occurs on the installation.

This event is an opportunity to educate community members about the squadron, installation and U.S. Space Force missions. It also allows service members to become more connected to their local community.”

The on-base hike was made possible due to a partnership of the Amherst Historical Commission and Space Delta 6’s 23rd SOPS.

Department of the Air Force releases COVID-19 vaccination guidance for civilians

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Department of the Air Force released a policy and fact sheet detailing COVID-19 vaccination guidance for DoD civilians on Feb. 22.

The Secretary of Defense’s top priority is protecting the workforce and encouraging all personnel to get vaccinated to protect their health as well as the health of their coworkers and families.

The vaccines are safe and effective, but remain optional for all employees until one of the vaccines receives full Food and Drug Administration approval and licensure.

DAF has commenced vaccinating the Total Force and its beneficiaries, including civilian employees.

Commanders are expected to manage the COVID-19 vaccination program as a high priority, making every effort to exhaust available doses. If any personnel declines the vaccine, commanders should vaccinate the next individual within the priority scheme.

Only civilian employees occupying positions that contain properly developed physical and medical requirements, to include immunizations, will be asked whether they have been vaccinated.

Civilian employees who get vaccinated through either DoD or private providers will be authorized up to four hours of administrative leave, including travel time, to obtain the vaccination.

Individuals are encouraged to return to the same location for their second vaccine dose. Follow on care will

be provided through employees’ existing health care plans or personal health care providers.

These novel vaccines are designed to protect people from severe symptoms and death, however, it is still unknown whether it will prevent mild symptoms or transmission of the virus. Commanders must continue to implement all available mitigation strategies to include maximizing telework, mandatory mask wearing for all individuals, and maintain a minimum 6-foot social distancing, DoD civilians are encouraged to read the full guidance and fact sheet, available for download at https:// peterson.usaf.afpims.mil/Portals/15/Vaccination%20 DAF%20Policy%20and%20Fact%20Sheet%20Final%20 22Feb21_1.pdf

New Military Spouse Occupational Licensure Program

Under a new law effective Jan. 1, 2021, military spouses may obtain three-year temporary credentials for any profession or occupation under the purview of Department of Regulatory Agencies (DPO), if they hold a credential in good standing from another US state or territory and meet certain other requirements. This new program is provided at no cost to the military spouse and is part of Colorado House Bill 20-1326 Create Occupational Credential Portability Program (HB20-1326), which Gov. Polis signed on June 25, 2020.

Applications are available for military spouses in each profession on the DPO's online licensing website https://apps.colorado.gov/dora/licensing/ Default.aspx. On March 27, the 50th Force Support Squadron will host this year’s “breakfast with the bunny,” which includes a pancake breakfast, photo opportunity with the bunny and an egg hunt from 8:30 -11:30 a.m. at the Fitness Center. The breakfast will include three pancakes with syrup, breakfast potatoes, two scrambled eggs, a fruit cup, and two sausage links or bacon strips.
