CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — There are many different books about leadership but the most influential book I read was Steven Covey’s “Principle-Centered Leadership.” What struck me most about principle-centered leadership is it casts a net of personal value ownership over the workplace environment. Principle-centered leadership works on the basis of natural principles and continues to build on these principles into the center of our lives, relationship with others, agreements and management processes. We become more organized, rooted, balanced and unified when our lives are centered around correct principles with which we can associate. This type of focus in turn helps us center on the four fundamental dimensions of principle-centered leadership: power, guidance, wisdom and security. As Stephen Covey put it, “If you focus on principle, you empower everyone who understands those principles to act without constant monitoring, evaluating, correcting, or controlling.”

Power, in this context, refers to the capacity an individual has to influence behavior of another individual or team. There are three types of power: coercive, utility and principle-centered power.

Coercive power is typically based on fear. Fear has been created in the follower by the leader and the follower acknowledges if they do not do as they are told, either something bad will happen or something good will be taken away from them. Individuals working under coercive leaders are unlikely to be committed and more likely to resist upper management. Utility power suggests followers act because they are aware of the benefits that will come if they do as they are told. Utility power only works if the follower has something the leader wants and vice versa. The last type of power is different in kind and degree from the previous

two. Principle-centered power is based on trust and requires time to develop. Principle-centered power is key no matter how small or large the shop, flight or squadron. One must gain the trust and respect of the personnel they are leading.

“If you focus on principle,

you empower everyone who understands those principles.”

Guidance is the direction people receive in life. Most of it comes from the social normatives as we grow. From the day we are born, we are guided by all elements that surround us, from parents to school, friends to co-workers. People on the low end of the guidance continuum lead social or selfish life-styles; they tend to have strong emotional dependencies. People in the middle of the continuum are still developing social conscience, learning through social norms, institutions, and relationships. Those on the high end of the continuum have the true principles from inspired and inspiring sources. We all start off on the low end of the continuum. When we are born, we tend to be selfish and always want attention. As we start growing older and venture out, we start moving into the middle of the continuum, developing our conscience from our surroundings and what we are continued page 7 | PRINCIPLE

Secretary, chief of staff initiate dialogue with commanders for new officer promotion categories

By Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) — Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein shared in a memorandum to wing, numbered Air Force and major command commanders May 31, a draft plan for new Line of the Air Force officer promotion categories.

The memo explains the proposed change and directs commanders to solicit and provide feedback from officers to major command commanders by July 31, with “a final recommendation due to the secretary and chief not later than Aug. 30, 2019.”

According to the memo, “The reemergence of great power competition, rapid development and fielding of advanced technologies, and new concepts of warfare and competition that span the entire spectrum of conflict demand a joint force structured to match this reality. These trends, if unaddressed, will challenge our ability to fight and win.”

The memo continues, “Over the past eighteen months, we have extensively examined how we develop, evaluate and promote officers across our total force. We have concluded that our current system, which has served us well in the past, is not optimized to support future joint warfighting in this new era. Based on our research, extensive discussions with Airmen across the Air Force (active, Guard, Reserve and civilian), and surveys with joint and interagency teammates, we believe it is time to expand the Line of the Air Force promotion categories into more subgroupings. The following categories represent the disciplines needed for future joint warfighting and allow

for developmental competitive pathways that are optimized for each category.”

The memo sets the stage for gathering field input similar to what was done under the Revitalizing Squadrons effort. The memo states, “While these changes have been reviewed and discussed at leadership levels, we realize this would be a significant change for the officer corps. Rather than make an immediate decision, we thought it best to share the draft with commanders first in order to engage in a dialogue with the officers assigned to you and solicit feedback before proceeding.”

In addition to commander-solicited feedback, Shon Manasco, assistant secretary of the Air Force for manpower and reserve affairs, and Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services, will be deploying briefing teams to various installations across major commands and functional communities during June and July to brief the proposed changes in-depth, answer questions and capture feedback from Airmen who are able to attend.

Additional virtual venues and online sites will also be available to gather feedback from across the force.

The memo concludes, “For this foundational change to succeed, commanders at every echelon must take ownership, understand and explain why we are proposing this significant change, listen to the officers entrusted to your care and pass your thoughts up the chain. Our future depends on getting this right. Help us make it better.”

The briefing and community-specific questions and answers will be made available to broader audiences at a later date.

Remembering D-Day 75 years later

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — On June 6, 1944, when Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, more than 2,000 Americans lost their lives in the name of freedom.

However, their sacrifices will never be forgotten as Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, remembers D-Day. Charles Souza, a guide at the National Museum of World War II Aviation and a Vietnam veteran, explained the significance of the D-Day invasion.

“Had we not gone into France, the Germans could’ve buckled down and fortified,” Souza said. “Had we not been successful we may never have defeated the Nazis, and if we did it would’ve taken a lot longer and there probably would’ve been even more casualties.”

The 50th Operations Group traces its lineage back to World War II, when they were called the 50th Pursuit Group.

Airman 1st Class Joseph Cummins, 4th Space Operations Squadron protected satellite communications maintenance

technician, said he is proud to be a part of the 50th OG. “Heritage is important, and when you can trace it back to World War II, it makes it even more impactful,” Cummins said. “Not only was the history of the United States altered, but so was the history of the entire world.”

Col. Laurel Walsh, 50th OG Commander, said she is proud to be the commander of the 50th OG. “The Group flew over 200 sorties on D-Day, striking targets deep behind the landing zones with their P-47 Thunderbolts,” she said. “It is an honor to lead a unit with such significant heritage and a tradition of excellence!”

Souza said during World War II, the 50th Pursuit Group used the P-47 Thunderbolt, a fighter-bomber that proved to be impactful.

“They hit and they hit hard,” he said. “They hit ammunition trains, tanks, railroads, anything that was a German target or transportation target. They went after those and were very successful.”

Cummins said heritage can impact performance.

“The brave men and women involved in the D-Day invasion, in World War II, they set the standard,” Cummins said.

“They blazed the trail and set the expectation very high.

Now it is our job to meet and exceed those expectations.”

Souza said his father flew in both World Wars, and he described the mindsets of pilots in the era.

“Becoming a pilot was not an easy task,” he said. “To be a pilot you have to be competitive and confident. Pilots were almost fearless. The thrill of being in the air has to be able to trump almost any fear, and any pilot who doesn’t have that mindset won’t make the cut.”

Cummins said remembering events like D-Day is important.

“It’s important we remember and celebrate our successes,” Cummins said. “We almost have a duty to remember how we got to where we are now, because had we not stormed the beaches of Normandy, the world could be very different.”

Souza said the sacrifice made by the men and women in the D-Day invasion changed history.

“The Normandy Beach invasion broke the Atlantic wall which was thought to be unbreakable,” he said. “If we had lost World War II, most of us wouldn’t be here, and that final push started with D-Day.”

Guidance is always necessary especially when you have been introduced to a new environment. This is true for all of us who signed the dotted line when we entered into service. Corporate and civilian environments are structured differently from the military. In the corporate world you have social normatives that guide conduct and behavior, where in the military you have authoritative guidance and instructions that guide our conduct and behavior.

Wisdom is the quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action, sagacity, discernment or insight. People at the low end of the continuum tend to base their thinking on misconstrued, distorted and discordant principles, and those on the high end show a good sense of judgment, discernment and comprehension. As a commander, one must acknowledge all information and discern what is true and what is fictitious, gather all pertinent information before making a conclusion and comprehend the effects of the decision that is made.

People receive security from their surroundings and interactions with others. Issues arise from dependencies we have on external sources that are made uncertain and insecure. Staying balanced with one’s security is key to self-development. As military members move around they learn to rely on internal and external sources. Security sources may include spouse, family members, co-workers or friends. Security always fluctuates and can at times swing to the extremes in a split second, but realizing this and centering on principles can ensure one gets back on the right track and stays balanced.

When principle-centered, we gain four sources of strength: power, guidance, wisdom and security. This provides the foundation to build meaningful relationships, make sound decisions and gives us a sense of ownership, and over time, increased talent, success and a better self.

Principle-centered leadership affects all aspects of life and brings coherence to all the different areas in which we live and breathe.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Colorado summers can be fun, with seemingly endless activities, however, it is important to practice risk management and follow the proper safety procedures when participating in high-risk activities such as rock climbing.

Brandon Schirm, 50th Force Support Squadron unit safety representative, said he has been rock climbing for more than 17 years.

“When you’re participating in an activity such as rock climbing, you have to make sure you’re following the proper safety procedures,” Schirm said. “This means understanding the sport and its dangers before you go out.”

Senior Airman Nathan Saelens, 50th Comptroller Squadron financial operations flight technician, who has been rock climbing for more than 15 years, said to ensure safety equipment is adequate.

“Don’t be afraid to invest in new equipment,” Saelens said. “Ensure your ropes are in good and working condition and make sure your harness is also in good condition.”

Schirm said going alone is a bad idea.

“Make sure you find a mentor, someone who is experienced,” he said. “Having someone with you can help prevent injury and they can also make sure you’re doing it right.”

Saelens recommended new climbers take classes.

“Don’t be afraid to sign up for a class, taking a class is a good way to meet other climbers and it’s also a way to make sure you know what you’re doing. Teachers are going to be very experienced and will teach you proper techniques and procedures while climbing,” Saelens said.

Schirm said it’s important to be aware of your surroundings.

“Pay attention to whats going on around you,” Schirm said. “A common injury you’ll see is rock fall, when lose rock falls and hits a climber. It’s important to be conscious of what’s going on.”

Schirm said preventing an injury is simple.

“By staying in areas that are well travelled, well climbed, you’re able to prevent things like rock fall from occurring,” Schirm said. “This is because most of the loose rock will have fallen out already.”

Saelens said rock climbing can be safe.

“If you are confident in your abilities and are following the proper safety procedures, there is absolutely no reason to be scared while rock climbing,” Saelens said. “Just make sure you know what you’re doing and people with you do as well.”

Saelens also said rock climbing can be stress relieving.

“Rock climbing is like

a puzzle...”

“Have fun,” Saelens said. “Go out and enjoy and respect Mother Nature. Have a good time but make sure you’re practicing sound risk management.”

Schirm said he loves the thrill of climbing.

“Rock climbing is like a puzzle where you have to piece together your hand and foot placements in a specific order to reach the top,” he said. “A climber at any skill level or age can enjoy the movement and freedom of climbing, this is why I climb.”

Schirm also said to treat rock climbing like any other high-risk activity.

“You’re not going to go rafting unless you know how to swim,” Schirm said. “If you fall off that boat you’re going to drown. It’s the same with rock climbing. Make sure you understand what you’re doing before you go out and do it. Follow the proper safety procedures, use the proper equipment and enjoy yourself. It’s a fun sport at a low cost, of course there’s risk but if you do what you’re supposed to, you’ll be fine.”

A proud military mom and spouse, Gail holds an in-demand national certification as a clinical medical assistant, yet struggled to find work locally. Mt. Carmel’s MilSpouse Career Program and partners at PrepConnect360 provided the answer. “It was difficult for me to communicate my skillset in meaningful ways,” said Gail. “Mt. Carmel helped me develop a new resume and provided very encouraging career counseling.” With a current resume, Gail enrolled in PC360. “The class was so thorough; it really walks you through the steps of job search through interview success. The class built me up to someone I hadn’t seen before -- I found Gail the medical assistant who felt confident to walk in the door and say, ‘this is who I am; these are my job skills and this is how I can help your organization.’” PC360 helps transitioning service members and careerseeking military spouses effectively enter the workforce after answering a profound question, “Career wise, what do I want to do next?” The class includes resume and job interview skills development, networking experience and more. For Gail, the journey led to her dream job as a medical assistant with the contractor supporting a county justice center. Her advice to others, “Never give up and don’t be afraid of change,” said Gail. “Then, get into our community to network and volunteer; inform that network of your strengths and let people know you are the person they want to hire.”

Running trail repairs

The running trail, located north of the fitness center, is under repair until June 28.

The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron is conducting the repairs due to damage caused by erosion. During these repairs, portions of the running trail will be closed for safety purposes.
