North hosts a ‘Study Skills’ class that goes over studying methods and how to retain knowledge more effectively. Airmen can sign up for the class via the Schriever Professional Development sharepoint site. The next class is scheduled for June 19.

“It’s never too late to become better at studying,” North said. “Learning should continue throughout a lifetime, especially during a successful military career. Why not take opportunities to increase the efficiency of your studying and retain the information longer?”

Staff. Sgt. Lathaniel Leigh, 50th Space Wing religious affairs, just completed her EOC. Leigh said she studied by highlighting important information in her coursework with two different colors and then studying with flashcards she made.

“CDCs have helped me with the technical aspects of my job by covering areas I may not see on a day-to-day basis,” she said. “It’s a part of career progression. Education cannot be taken away, so you might as well put in the work and take what is yours.”

OINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas — A few weeks ago I was tagged in a post by my teammate, Chief Master Sgt. Jay Harris to take on the 22 push-up challenge for Veteran Suicide Awareness. The purpose is to bring light to Veterans Affairs studies which show on average — we lose 22 Veterans to suicide each day. This rate is close to double that of the US population. Victims range from all ages and span retired, separated, active duty, guard, and the reserves. Everyday we learn more of how it also impacts those who serve alongside our veterans — their spouses and children.

Today, I’ll compete day 22 of my challenge and want to say up front, I know these push-ups don't fix anything by themselves. Additionally, I recognize this is a deeply personal topic for many. This enemy is deceptive and elusive.

It causes unmeasurable damage to lives and families. It hurts like no other. And even one “statistic” is one life too many.

Taking time out each day to do these push-ups, has given me time to reflect on how we can be better as Wingmen. And below is what came out of it:

Attacking the stigma

This topic is not easy to talk about…and that’s a large part of the issue. When someone says they are having Mental Health problems or challenges…it does not mean they are broken, it means they are human. If you broke your leg, there would be

no hesitation to see a doctor. Why doesn’t the same apply for your mental health — and without judgement?

We all know, no one in life is immune to pain in this world.

It’s only a matter of time before an event comes along that will bring us to our knees (regardless of how strong we are).

And it’s crucial to never suffer in silence or alone. When we let pride and ego get in the way, it becomes a massive barrier to being honest with ourselves and those around us. We feel

like we have to play a part and don’t give ourselves the permission to heal and seek help. It’s a part of life’s journey and we need to learn to lean on each other, to combat shame, and avoid isolation when the storm hits. And when we do, we can emerge even stronger.

2 SOPS performs first GPS III maneuver

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The 2nd Space Operations Squadron performed the first station keeping maneuver on a GPS III satellite to Satellite Vehicle Number 75 at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, May 14.

“The unit was able to complete the

maneuver flawlessly.”

The maneuver set a new standard for how GPS maneuvers should be conducted for the squadron that provides precision, navigation and timing signals to billions of users around the world.

A station keeping maneuver is performed to keep vehicles in their node (or parking spots in orbit) and involves burning the satellite’s thrusters and changing the vehicles speed at a particular point in its orbit.

This causes the orbit to change, in turn, keeping the vehicle in the ideal position to provide coverage.

“All operational GPS vehicles are assigned nodes, when all nodes are filled with healthy vehicles there is good global GPS coverage,” said 1st Lt. Michael Gallagher, GPS subsystems analyst. “When new vehicles are launched they typically aren’t

launched directly into their final node. This means that the 2 SOPS analysis flight must perform a re-phase maneuver to put a vehicle in its node.”

The maneuver required GPS III’s signal to be turned off. Turning off the navigation signal while performing the maneuver prevents users from receiving inaccuracies generated by a change in satellite velocity.

“This was a new process that we could learn from as it was the first station keeping [maneuver] performed for the newest

generation of GPS satellites,” said Senior Airman Harrison Sherwood, 2nd SOPS satellite systems operator, who sent the commands to the satellite during the maneuver. “[Since] this was the first [maneuver] of the newest generation satellites, it was a bit of a guinea pig for future maneuvers.”

However, the unit was able to complete the maneuver flawlessly. The maneuver was completed in a special mission area and there were no changes to the normal operations floor.

“This maneuver had no effect on the rest of the [GPS satellite] constellation,” Gallagher said. “SVN-45 was in the node SVN-75 was being placed into, so there was no decrease in GPS signal quality as a result of this maneuver.”

This procedure was also the first of its kind to be performed with the 2nd SOPS Architecture Evolution Plan, which all active satellites in the program are operated.

Since GPS III vehicles are fully integrated into the program with this maneuver, all maintenance is conducted through AEP. “Station keeping maneuvers are essential to satellite operations and must be done for regular maintenance,” said 2nd Lt. Tyler Gorman, 2nd SOPS navigation payload engineer. “This activity helped validate a nominal maintenance activity for a new generation of vehicles.”

The unit plans to continue to use this new method and program for future GPS satellites that are being launched and need to be re-phased into their operation slots.

The next satellite that will need a station maneuver performed is SVN-76, which is scheduled to launch in the next few months.

“GPS maintenance requires a coordinated effort to ensure our worldwide service is preserved,” Gorman said. “That means careful planning and execution from our analysts in 2 SOPS, our satellite system operator and the operational support from Lockheed Martin and the Aerospace Corporation.”

1st SOPS builds bonds with lunch, learn, ALGs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Airmen in the 1st Space Operations Squadron haven’t let COVID-19 disrupt morale and camaraderie as they seek new methods to bond.

They created Airman Life Groups, a group where Airmen connect outside the office via Zoom to discuss non-work related topics. The ALGs allow Airmen to remain engaged with each other and discuss topics such as knitting, coffee brewing methods, cooking, baking and photography once a week.

Airmen also have a weekly ‘lunch and learn’ meeting where they discuss current events and learn about their Wingmen.

They cover topics ranging from current events, space, professional development and work. On April 3, retired Col. Jack Fischer, former 50th Space Wing vice commander, spoke about his time with the International Space Station and about resiliency.

Meetings previously occurred faceto-face but due to COVID-19 mitigation measures, they now take place via Zoom.

“We recognized that we had to engage the team and talk to each other and be there for each other,” said Capt. Patrick Boyle, 1st SOPS chief of operations training. “It’s one thing to reach out and say, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’ It’s a whole other to take time to talk and be together virtually.”

Boyle also got retired Col. Jack Anthony, former 1st SOPS commander, to speak to Airmen during a lunch and learn.

Anthony planned to speak to Schriever Air Force Base late March-early April but COVID-19 canceled that presentation.

Rather than scrap those efforts, Boyle reached out to salvage the event.

“I wanted to see if Mr. Anthony wanted to speak about Jack Swigert — the namesake of Bldg. 400 — and he agreed to it,” Boyle said. “We put together the slides and presentation and he talked about Jack Swigert and how he was portrayed in the Apollo 13 movie.”

Anthony also spoke to Airmen’s spouses and children in a separate event to provide information about the Space Force during a virtual presentation April 11.

After Molly Raymond, spouse of U.S. Space Command commander and Chief of Space Operations Gen. John Raymond, received messages on Facebook asking if Anthony could speak to kids about the Apollo 13 mission, they coordinated to set up the meeting.

“Mr. Anthony and I showed up and he had a range of questions from spouses and kids,” he said. “The kids were interested in

Swigert and how a sibling who’s interested can join the Space Force. It was an interesting conversation and great to see kids and spouses who know about the space community. This was a great way to bond.”

When they’re not bonding through lunch and learn, 1st SOPS Airmen connect through their respective ALGs, which existed prior to COVID-19 but added additional groups since moving to telework.

Capt. Andrew Marin, 1st SOPS assistant director of operations, hoped to offer avenues for single Airmen or those without families to engage with their co-workers

who have varying work schedules. It also helps meet the Air Force’s four pillars of health: spiritual, mental, social and physical.

“It’s a no-brainer to keep [ALGs] going,” Marin said. “This is to keep [Airmen] socially engaged. This goes back to taking care of our Airmen and those four pillars of health. It’s not leadership saying we should do such-and-such. This was 1 SOPS members taking care of other 1 SOPS members. Even with the constraints that we have, we’ve been able to take care of our people.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Senior Master Sgt. Cory Shipp, 50th Force Support Squadron and Wing Staff Agencies superintendent, and Senior Airman Cassidy Basney, 50th Operations Support Squadron wing intelligence trainer, are two of the Space Force’s 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year announced May 11.

With the Space Force being a new branch, Shipp and Basney are the first Airmen in its young history to earn the award. The award follows the Air Force’s 12 OAY program and is considered to be among the most prestigious awards an Airman can win.

“Always be authentic and genuine in leadership,” said Shipp, who won in the Senior Noncommissioned Officer category. “Now more than ever, our Airmen deserve the honest answer versus a popular answer. Trust your gut, if whatever you are doing is for the right reasons; it will always resonate with those you lead.”

COLORADO SPRINGS BUSINESS JOURNAL Shipp also earned the 2019 Sijan Leadership Award at the major command level, which recognizes individuals who’ve demonstrated the highest qualities of leadership in their jobs and lives, in the senior enlisted category. He said the hard work, dedication and support of his team in the 50th FSS and WSA pushed him to win the award.

“I will use this platform as a personal example to all Airmen, that if you work hard and take care of your team, the rest will take care of itself,” Shipp said. “Some will call this cliché, but I truly believe that everyone can be successful with the right attitude, positive energy and uncompromising effort toward leadership and followership.”

As the squadron superintendent for the 50th FSS, Shipp oversees 24 enlisted Airmen and as the group superintendent for the 50th WSA, Shipp is tasked with supports an additional 41 enlisted Airmen.

Basney, who earned recognition in the junior enlisted category, traveled and briefed senior enlisted leaders about space threats and operations, to include the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force. She also earned the Superior Performer award at Space Flag 20-1, a major space exercise that simulates realistic, high speed warfighting environments, for her ability to integrate intelligence into mission planning and effectively drive space operations.

Additionally, she is working toward finishing a bachelor’s degree in intelligence analysis.

“Being a 12 OAY [winner] gives me an opportunity to show Airmen if you apply yourself to your career, you can do great things,” Basney said. “I can help encourage junior enlisted to think outside of the box and really apply yourself to your goals, dreams and have an impact that will follow you throughout the rest of your career.”

Before earning this recognition, Basney won 50th Space Wing and Team Schriever 2019 Airman of the Year for outstanding performance and leadership.

“I am extremely proud of this achievement,” she said.

“Many junior enlisted do not think that they can create change or have an influence within their young career and I was able to do both of those things.”

Basney said winning this award wouldn’t be possible without her mentors — Lt. Col. Patrick Hamlin, National Air and Space Intelligence Center space analysis squadron commander and retired Master Sgt. Johnnie Somsen, former 50th OSS intelligence flight superintendent.

“Basney is an incredibly hard worker,” Hamlin said.

“In the Air Force we talk a lot about informal leadership [and] she is the epitome of what that looks like. No one should ever discount themselves because of rank or feel as though they can only be in passive receive mode.

Airmen can, and have changed the world.”

The next step for the two award winners is competing at the Air Force level against winners from each Major Command in the branch.

“Now more than ever, our Airmen

deserve the honest answer

versus a popular answer.”

“Even as a junior enlisted Airman, you are able to accomplish anything you put your mind to,” Basney said. “Realize you can make a difference and have an impact no matter what your rank is. If you apply yourself, you will be able to accomplish more than you thought you could.”

Each base submits its most qualified Airmen for the award, Basney and Shipp had to compete with Airmen from four other wings in the USSF. “Thank your teammates, supervisors, honor your families and loved ones,” said Chief Master Sgt. Boston Alexander, 50th SW command chief. “You’re the face of this accomplishment but a great many people had a lot to do with getting you there. There are phenomenal E-4’s and below and phenomenal E-8’s and below [assigned to] the Space Force, but you were chosen, and they chose right. It’s a heavy crown to wear; but where much is earned, much is given.”

Nation the strongest fighting force possible. Individually, we can get caught up in a rat race to chase a #1 spot, finish first in the class, _____________ (you fill in the blank). This quest to “reach the top, get mine, level up” — feeds into a “dog eat dog, at all costs, back stabbing” culture. And there’s a brutal cost that comes with it — it divides us. This is where trust and connection erodes. And it destroys teams.

Instead of trying to beat the people around us, we should be focused on lifting them up. We should care far more about the lives we’re blessed to serve alongside, than any promotion, award, or recognition. I’ve been lucky to have a few of those in my career, and can tell you a quick e-mail or note from someone who said “you helped me…” is far more fulfilling (as in, not even close). Focus on building up others, highlighting their talents, amplifying their purpose, and supporting them anytime doubt creeps in. When you do — you’ll feel better, they’ll feel better — and we’ll all see just how high WE can climb together.

Open up a real dialogue

It’s easy to boast about all the things we are great at…but what about our faults, our scars, the things we avoid.

This gets at the heart of being vulnerable. Of being genuine to the person

we are and not putting up a front or wearing a mask showing that things are perfect in our lives. What’s powerful is when we open up a conversation about what we struggle with — people tend to naturally converge around it.

This is where meaningful connection takes place. People encouraging, checking-in and helping each other to stay accountable. And when we fall short, they are there to help us get back to our feet. Why, because we’ve let them see us — for who we really are and how we are trying to grow. And all they want at the end of the day, is a chance to be there for you and me, whenever we may need it.

Each one of them would do anything to be there for a brother or sister-inarms. After a weekend of reflection and appreciation of those who served and sacrificed everything from our military, I find myself thinking about the ongoing war on suicide — the one with the biggest cost within our ranks.

We can’t and won’t shy away from it.

Because our teammates out there need us and we need them. To all the people who picked me up when I was close to giving in, I’ll continue to try and repay you by doing the same for someone else. And I have faith that we can and will be better, because no matter how dark things get — we can choose to shine a light and give someone hope.

“I want to share not only my lessons learned, but lessons learned from other transitioning veterans, in how to more successfully navigate a military transition,” says Ryan Plunkett, 22-year Air Force veteran, Mt. Carmel client and now partner.

Ryan continues, “I quickly realized after I transitioned that my why ‘was to help others get to their why.’” As a financial advisor, Ryan is passionate about sharing his lessons learned to help transitioning veterans navigate the complexities of the myriad of critical decisions all veterans face during transition. The timing of some decisions can be critical, so Ryan begins working with transitioning veterans up to a year before they transition and continues to serve them after they have successfully transitioned into their next career.

Ryan is excited to partner with Mt. Carmel’s Transition & Employment team, and is leading the upcoming virtual workshop “Avoiding Financial Pitfalls in Transition” in partnership with Mt. Carmel.

Ryan is passionate about helping veterans navigate the complexities of the transition process. He has walked the journey transitioning veterans are currently taking and has a first-hand understanding of how stressful, and sometimes overwhelming, the process can be as so many aspects of life, as we know it, are changing simultaneously.

ON BASE 50th CE schedules generator maintenance

The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron is scheduled to perform generator maintenance 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

June 13.

The maintenance will entail "hard drops" as frequently as every hour, with up to ten hard drops.

All mission-critical equipment is on technical power and protected by an uninterruptible power supply, no mission impact is expected. There is the possibility of a 3-5 minute interruption in non-technical power during each hard drop.

Turn off all equipment not in use, such as fans, TVs, coffee pots and computer screens to help reduce the electrical load. At this time, no load shedding of any building is anticipated for this generator maintenance, however, if required, facility managers will be promptly notified.

Clinic suspends over-the-counter program indefinitely

The 21st Medical Squadron pharmacy has suspended the over-the-counter medication program indefinitely to ensure patients are receiving the appropriate level of care and assessment due to ongoing events.

CE performs parking lot maintenance

The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron is scheduled to perform parking striping in the North Restricted Area parking lot June 6-7. As a result, the east side of the North Portal parking lot will be closed. This will impact mission-essential, shift-work and handicapped personnel working nights.

Areas will be cordoned off as early as Friday at 3 p.m., with work occurring on Saturday and Sunday. Members accessing the installation this weekend should heed all posted signs, park only in open spots and do not attempt to relocate cones or taping.
