Embrace change... or be left behind

White Jr. Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chief of Air Force Reserve ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. — Citizen Airmen: In this edition, the boss and I decided to touch on a very complex topic: change. Either you love it, hate it or just try to roll with it. It is a billion dollar industry with books, articles and podcasts all hoping to educate and coach us on how to cope, handle or even lead change. One thing is certain, if you don't embrace it and learn to evolve with the change, you will be left behind.

It's difficult; I get it. We are creatures of habit and many of us are accustomed to our own comfortable ways or upbringings, but the Air Force is evolving, the world is evolving and, most importantly, our culture is evolving. We are in the midst of some of the biggest changes this century has ever seen.

This past year has been one for the books. Our entire world as we knew it changed overnight one day last March and here we are a year later still not back to normal. COVID has changed us and the way we will operate in the future, even in the Air Force Reserve.

We have adapted to telework, and it is here to stay. We have perfected the virtual meeting, and we had to get creative with how we connect with each other on a daily basis. The pandemic has even altered our personal lives. For the past year, we were continued page 5 | EVOLVING

Cadet graduation returns to Falcon Stadium for Class of 2021

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — Cadets graduated from the Air Force Academy for the first time in two years at Falcon Stadium, receiving their diplomas from the event’s keynote speaker, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, May 26.

In all, 1,019 cadets graduated in front of a select crowd in the stands containing no more than eight of their family members and friends, a safety and health precaution set in place for the ceremony as the Academy continues to operate during the pandemic within Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Defense Department guidelines.

“That we are able to come together today in Falcon Stadium, even with some limitations and restrictions, is a testament to the tireless dedication, courage and expertise of our medical professional, researchers, first responders and everyone who has been on the front line battling the COVID-19 pandemic across our nation,” Lt. Gen. Richard Clark, the Academy’s superintendent, said from the stage. “I think we all owe them a round of applause.”

Last year’s graduation ceremony swapped Falcon Stadium for the terrazzo without family or friends, a

move to keep cadets, staff and families at the base safe from the novel coronavirus.

Clark said the Academy has used the school’s “amazing brainpower” to stage this year’s graduation event in Falcon Stadium and keep the base population safe.

“Our pandemic math team has developed predictive modeling and testing protocols that have informed our response to this crisis and helped us confront one of the most difficult challenges in the history of our Academy,” Clark said.

The PMT is a team of mathematicians and science experts at the school who developed calculations to determine the school’s coronavirus testing schedule and how the health and safety guidelines it has installed across the campus have helped stave off the outbreak.

Clark said graduation day is a day cadets, the newly-minted officers, will remember for their rest of their lives.

“In the near future, you will face great challenges but you have shown us that you are ready, and we are counting on the diverse talents of each and every one of you to accelerate the change we need to win.”

Clark thanked the Academy’s faculty and staff.

commanders), academy military trainers and staff members who impacted their lives over these last four years and helped develop them into the leaders they are today, ready to cross the stage into our Air Force and Space Force,” he said.

In all, 114 of the just-commissioned officers will become officers in the Space Force.

“We have an incredible team and we owe a debt of gratitude to all who have gone above and beyond to ensure the Class of 2021 got to this important milestone today.”

Along with Milley, Acting Secretary of the Air Force John P. Roth, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, Lieutenant Governor of Colorado Dianne Primavera, and Mayor of Colorado Springs John Suthers also attended the ceremony.

confined to our homes with very little social interaction, and that can change people. As we slowly return to normal, we must realize the transition might not be easy for everyone; be a good wingman and check in on your family and friends.

The rise of social media this past decade has changed the way we communicate. When I joined the Air Force Reserve more than 31 years ago, we received information from our supervisors, who received information from their supervisors and so on. Now, we all receive information at the same time whether it's from a social media post or an email. We, as leaders, need to be comfortable with this.

We live in a fast-paced, digital era, and we must keep up. We now have direct access to our most senior leaders and elected officials of this country, and we’ve learned over the past few years that what you say and do online

has real consequences. Please embrace this change, but also be cognizant of the permanent digital footprint you are creating.

Lastly, I want to discuss one of the most impactful and important changes happening as we speak in the Air Force Reserve — the culture change. The way we work, interact with Airmen and treat one another is changing before our eyes, and it’s about time.

As a young Airman, I remember being told to never openly discuss social issues surrounding race, religion, national origin or sexual orientation in the workplace, because it had the potential of exposing differences.

Now, we openly discuss and celebrate our differences and strive to create an environment of inclusivity. I say this time and time again: the only way we will make our organizations better is to surround ourselves with people who think differently than us.

They catch our blind spots, offer a different perspective and add valuable insight. At the end of the day, we might not like the same football team or share the same political views, but we must be respectful and open to people who are different from us.

The boss and I are honored to serve you and your families during this historic period of change. Thank you for taking it head on, being resilient and adapting to it so we come out better on the other side.

Air Force releases updated fitness test score breakdown Staff Report Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

WASHINGTON — The Air Force will resume physical fitness testing July 1 with only three components: pushups, sit-ups and the 1.5-mile run.

Without the waist measurement as a scored component, push-ups and sit-ups will increase from 10 to 20 points each, while the 1.5-mile run will remain at 60 points.

Scoring will fall into five-year age groups, as opposed to the previous 10.

The waist measurement will no longer be required as part of the physical fitness test but a separate assessment of body composition, as required by DoD Instruction 1308.3, will continue starting in October. Testing for body composition may continue to use some form of waist measurement and may be administered during PT testing to reduce scheduling and administrative burdens, but body composition will not be a component of the PT test itself. Further details on the body composition program will be released at a later date.

The Air Force has also worked on alternative strength and cardiovascular testing exercise options with plans to announce them in the coming weeks. Once announced, members and fitness monitors will have approximately six months to familiarize themselves with use and execution of the alterna-tive testing options prior to having them available in January 2022. Members will have a choice of which testing options they choose for their physical fitness assessment components. The six-month timeline will help ensure fitness assessment cells are prepared to

COUNTERING THE CORONAVIRUS

AF Academy’s Outdoor Rec activities continue during pandemic

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — The coronavirus pandemic put a hold on many services at the Air Force Academy but didn’t stop the 10th Force Support Squadron’s Outdoor Recreation office.

Many services at the base came to a near standstill during the initial days of the pandemic, but the OutdoorRec staff continued to offer scores of activities to thousands of customers.

Working within Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the OutdoorRec staff created socially distant adventure trips, retooled their trailer rental schedule to decrease customer interaction and hosted “staycations” allowing customers to swap national parks closed to the public for Peregrine Pines Family Camp.

“We will continue the ‘staycations’ as this has been extremely well-received by those who don't have a vehicle to tow a trailer or were not comfortable towing,” said Outdoor Rec director Charles Alfultis.

“Being in Colorado affords us the opportunities to provide numerous activities year-round.”

According to Alfutis, some changes to customer service were so successful they’ll remain in place.

“We will continue to schedule pick-up and drop-off times for customers who would like to rent trailers,” he said. “It helps the customers in keeping social distance and helps the staff give better customer service as they do not have several customers to help at one time,” he said.

Same for the “staycations.”

Summer activities OutdoorRec continues to offer include white water rafting, rock climbing and biking.

“Being in Colorado affords us the opportunities to provide numerous activities year-round,” Alfultis said.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — One of my favorite aspects of this time of year is being able to enjoy being outside. The weather is getting warm, we all start seeing the neighborhood kids in their yards, or out riding their bikes, and throwing the football in the yard, etc.

Unfortunately, we also sometimes see young children wandering around the streets alone, or left unattended in vehicles.

To ensure Colorado laws are being complied with, Peterson Air Force Base has developed the requirements and minimum ages for children to be left unattended.

It's important to remember, however, that parents and guardians must consider the physical, emotional and psychological maturity of their children. Some children, because of a disability or psychological problem should not be given the same degree of self-management.

Guidelines of requirements and minimum ages: • Children ages five and up may be in the yard of residence with adult supervisor having visual sight and/ or being within hearing distance.

• Ages six and up may walk to and from school without adult supervision.

• Ages seven and up may be unattended outside as long as they have access to adult assistance.

• No child under 10 may be left unattended in a car. For those children 10 and up, the keys need to be removed and the emergency brake should be engaged.

• Ages 10 may be left without adult supervision in their quarters for up to two hours as long as they have ready access to an adult via telephone. Ages 11 may exceed two hours with ready telephone access to an adult.

• Ages 12-14 may be left alone without a sitter more than two hours only during the daytime hours and before curfew.

• Ages 16 and up may be left alone overnight up to five consecutive days; however, there must be some type of adult supervision available to make periodic checks.

• Youth must be 12 years old (or a 6th grader) and be babysitter trained by the Red Cross, or equivalent, in order to babysit their sibling. An 11 year old may babysit their sibling for a maximum of two hours provided they meet the above training requirements.

When violations are reported to the Peterson AFB

base defense operations center, security forces quickly react and initiate a child abuse or neglect response.

Military offenders are subject to administrative, judicial and non-judicial punishment as deemed appropriate by their commander. Civilian offenders may be subject to prosecution by local authorities.

Curfews are is in place Friday and Saturday nights from midnight until 6 a.m., and Sunday through Thursday from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.

CDOT construction: 1-25 and CO 115 ramp resurfacing

This project will resurface interchange ramps in the Colorado Springs area, upgrade guardrail systems and place new pavement markings. Several locations will receive new asphalt curb, slope and ditch paving. Overnight ramp closures at NORAD/O'Connell (EXIT 43 A/B). With anticipated completion in August, this project will improve safety with smoother highway transitions and new guardrail. Planned closures are overnight from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and signed detour routes will be provided. All ramps will be open during the day. Some noise is expected overnight from construction equipment and asphalt milling operations. All work and ramp closures are weather-dependent.
