OVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. — By the nature of all our jobs in the Air Force, the demand for continued excellence in the mission brings forth a potential to have our work stress bleed over and create stress in our personal lives.

The majority of Airmen are able to cope properly and flip the proverbial “switch” once they head home from the office; all the thoughts of taskers, emails and upcoming meetings can be put aside when their child, spouse or significant other greets them at the door. For others, like myself, it can take time and practice to look within and develop those skills. And this is okay! All of us are expected to succeed, but we too often overlook how this affects us individually and those we care about.

Stress can and does extend from work to family time and vice versa. What sets people apart is how they approach and deal with this inevitable crossroad.

For too long, I was constantly working through my to-do list from the time I got home each night until I fell asleep. While I was physically present for my spouse or friends, a lot of the time I was not fully engaged. I have the most loving wife who understands the stressors and expectations of my job. With that said, she rightly called me out when my mind drifted back to

work when it should have been elsewhere. I take pride in the work I do for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and I love my wife and value our time together. I want to ensure both are taken care of.

The only way to effectively do this is by flipping that “switch” at the right time.

The work will always be there, so remember that pride in your work is expected — but the balance between your home and work life is the true recipe for success.

Joggernauts return following COVID-19 hiatus

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Joggernauts, a running club developed by 50th Operations Support Squadron and the 4th Space Operations Squadron, returned Wednesday for their first run following COVID-19.

Joggernauts run Wednesdays at 3 p.m. at the Schriever Fitness Center and Saturdays at 8 a.m. at various locations throughout Colorado Springs.

Throughout the 3-mile run Airmen would “pass” the fruit.

Normally, Joggernauts stop running around November and return in March.

This year, however, due to COVID-19, Joggernauts delayed their comeback.

“It’s been slow starting,” Master Sgt. Micky Sederburg, 50th OSS superintendent said. “We’re not [running] as fast as we were last September and October. But it’s great to be back. We’re a support network to get people outside and motivated to have fun.”

Sederburg hopes anyone, regardless of skill level, who wants to participate joins the group.

“We’re here to motivate, educate and get you moving,” Sederburg said. “Every chance we get, we talk about how [running] makes us happier and reduces stress.

Everyone comes in at a different level. We have people who are every shape, size and

ability. It’s really just to get out and have fun.”

The Joggernauts held a watermelon run Wednesday at the fitness center with 10 participants. Throughout the 3-mile run Airmen would “pass” the fruit.

To pass the watermelon, Airmen would place it on the ground for the next runner to grab to adhere to physical distancing guidelines.

“It’s something we’ve done before and it’s something fun to do instead of, ‘OK, we’re going to go out and run three, really hot, really slow miles,’” said 1st Lt. Jenna Ervin, 4th SOPS wideband orbital analyst. “It makes [the run] less of a slug and more of a team effort, which is what we’re going for."

Ervin also mentioned the importance runs have on physical and mental health.

While Joggernauts stressed the importance of enjoying the process, they also discuss the benefits it provides Airmen.

“I think if we could start getting more people together where we could all go running, or walking or jogging or whatever your skill level is, it’d be a good way for everyone to get out of their office and put a team effort into something,” she said.

“It goes so far into improving your physical and mental health. Even though some people say, ‘I’m not a runner,’ or ‘I could never keep up,’ that’s not true. It’s a good way to support a healthy mind.”

The Joggernauts also watch motivational videos once per week during lunch at the 50th OSS break/student lounge area to boost morale. Anyone is welcome to join the lunches and Sederburg said runners continued page 6 | MOTIVATION

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — “Activating the 750th Operations Group is a critical step at a critical time. I look forward to leading and working with the outstanding professionals who serve as our front line of defense in space,” said Col. Casey Beard, 750th OG commander.

The 750th OG will enable improved focus on orbital warfare and allow the 50th Operations Group to better focus on delivering GPS and satellite communication capabilities.

The new force structure improves readiness, stimulates the development of orbital warfare operational concepts and tactics, institutionalizes the Space Force culture for space warfighting, and streamlines force presentation to joint force commanders. “[Our adversaries] are actively pursuing capabilities to deny us access to space,” said Beard. “That is why the 750th [OG] exists.”

Today’s space cadre is required to operate in a complex and competitive strategic environment and defend against threats that are multi-faceted and multi-domain. The protect and defend force structure will optimize the development, presentation, and employment of space warfighting forces.

This new force structure effectively shifts space into a warfighting domain as outlined in the 2018 National Defense Strategy, and is fundamental to adapting national security organizations, policies, doctrine, and capabilities as outlined in space policy.

“Sometimes we take for granted history being made right before our eyes,” said Col. James Smith, 50th Space Wing commander and ceremony presiding official. “I challenge all of you, especially the commanders of the 750th OG and the support units of the 750th, to see where you stand and that you are responsible for continuing the legacy. Let’s make some history.”

Sederburg also said they provide runners with resources such as links to local races, online running logs, workouts and training plans for 5k, 10k and half marathons.

“We talk about pacing and how do

you run for pacing,” he said. “Maybe not so much diving into how it affects muscles, but the technique of running.

If you go out too fast, you’re going to come back slower. The idea is to go out 15 minutes at the same pace and come back exactly the same. We talk about how to run on trails and how to hit hills.

Everyone comes in at a different level.

It’s great to hear how they’ve improved.

It builds energy and excitement.”

50th OSS resumes IQC following COVID-19 stoppage

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Operations Support Squadron resumed its Instructor Qualification Course June 8 following a two-month stoppage due to COVID-19.

The 50th OSS previously conducted monthly training to prep Airmen on essential instructor fundamentals during IQC. Airmen then return to their units to teach their unit counterparts.

“Our basic duties are making sure [50th] OSS creates the most quality instructors possible,” said Staff Sgt. Austin Breitkreutz, 50th OSS senior enlisted instructor. “We do monthly training sessions together to get the most upto-date information. We train new instructors who fill training positions at the 50th Space Wing, [we also] provide training to the 21st Space Wing and to some reserve units around the U.S.” Airmen learn how to become an instructor during an eightday IQC. During the course, Airmen learn to build confi-

dence speaking in front of others and, at the end of the first week, conduct a 20-25 minute lesson about their weapon system. The final three days, Breitkreutz teaches Airmen how to work their respective system.

This is to ensure squadrons don’t lose their ability to instruct on the weapons systems once an Airman permanently changes units.

“They have the system knowledge, now we want them to spread that knowledge,” he said. “We’re going to give them the qualifications to become a certified instructor.

Then when they go back to their squadrons they can teach the new guys coming in.”

To be selected, five units — 1st, 2nd, and 4th Space Operations Squadrons, 50th Operations Group Standardization and Evaluation Flight and 50th OSS — hold a monthly training review board.

During the TRB, flight commanders select an Airman they feel is qualified to learn IQC material. Capt. Carmilya

Jones, 50th OSS senior instructor, said 50th OSS has 49 qualified instructors who teach 2-12 students during IQC. Jones noted how vital IQC is to future Airmen and why it’s important to create poised instructors.

“If we can help ensure those students are confident in what they’re operating on, then that plays into the bigger deterrence picture,” Jones said. “We show other [allies and adversaries] we have confident, proficient Airmen who know what they’re doing.”

Jones said she and Breitkreutz recognize the difference in Airmen from their first day of training versus the final day of the course.

“Our motto is: ‘You get what you put in,’” she said. “If we don’t train an instructor on a consistent basis to know the weapons systems and improve their instructor skills — whether that’s talking in front of a room or configuring a simulator — the quality of that instruction goes down.

But I have the best senior enlisted instructor. [Breitkreutz] has taught a lot of people in the short amount of time he’s been in this role. As a result, I can see the quality of instructors improving vastly.”

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio — The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center Female Fitment Program Office awarded a contract to begin production and development for body armor designed to better protect female Airmen during combat and contingency operations.

Finding uniform items and gear optimized for female Airmen is an Air Force Chief of Staff initiative. The Female Fitment Program Office was created in response to identify problems and find solutions quickly. The office partnered with the Air Force Security Forces Center in San Antonio, Texas to find a “sufficient armored plate carrier system that addresses appropriate form, fit and function while providing adequate protection for female Airmen.”

“This is a perfect example of Air Force Materiel Command getting feedback from the field and delivering the Air Force we need to the warfighter,” said Gen. Arnold W. Bunch Jr., AFMC commander. “I’m proud of the team pulling together to do what is right for our Airmen. They deserve gear that offers the protection they need while al-

lowing them to complete their mission.”

AFLCMC’s Human Systems Division is the lead organization to assess, evaluate and acquire new body armor for security forces defenders and other female Airmen whose jobs require them to operate in dangerous environments.

The new body armor will be specifically fitted to the female body preventing exposure to risks.

“Our female Airmen had gaps due to poor fitment issues," said Maj. Saily Rodriguez, Female Fitment Program manager. “The new gear fits properly which improves protection and offers better comfort for gear that has to be worn in difficult environments and conditions.”

The program office conducted an evaluation that included laboratory and field assessments. The contract was awarded to TSSi of Harrisonburg, Virginia for the Aspetto “Mach V” system that was deemed the best solution in terms of price, effectiveness and fitment.

“The feedback during our field assessment was overwhelmingly positive.

This is something our Airmen want because it offers a great benefit to their health and safety,” Rodriguez said.

The first product deliveries are expected in fall 2020.

THIS WEEK CE performs parking lot maintenance

The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron is scheduled to perform parking striping in the West Portal Restricted Area parking lot Saturday — Sunday.

As a result, the north and south side of the West Portal parking lot will be closed. This will impact mission-essential, shift-work and handicapped personnel working nights. Areas will be cordoned off as early as Friday at 2 p.m., with work occurring on Saturday and Sunday. Members accessing the installation this weekend should heed all posted signs, park only in open spots and do not attempt to relocate cones or taping.

50th CPTS hosts food drive

The 50th Comptroller Squadron is hosting a food drive until Thursday. Donation bins are located in the Bldg. 210 atrium, fitness center lobby and the north and west restricted area portals. The items will be donated to Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado. Requested items include canned foods and non-perishables.

Donate to Back to School Supply Drive

The Little Airmen’s Council is hosting a school supply drive for Schriever military-connected children. Boxes can be found in Bldg. 210, and at the north and west restricted area portals until July 15.

Needed items: pencils, folders, pens, notebooks, paper, crayons, glue, protractors, scissors, markers, colored pencils, rulers, erasers, sticky notes, maps and paper clips.

Restricted Area cell phone storage opens

The north and west restricted area portals’ cell phone storage machines are now operational.

Airmen can store cell phones in the storage units before entering the restricted area. Instructions are posted on the machines.

ARLINGTON, Va. — This week the Secretary of Defense released the Defense Space Strategy, which identifies how the Department of Defense will advance spacepower to be able to compete, deter, and win in a complex environment characterized by great power competition.

“The Defense Space Strategy is the next step to ensure space superiority and to secure the Nation’s vital interests in space now and in the future,” said Secretary of Defense, Mark T. Esper. “We desire a secure, stable, and accessible space domain that underpins our Nation’s security, prosperity, and scientific achievement. However, our adversaries have made space a warfighting domain and we have to implement enterprise-wide changes to policies, strategies, operations, investments, capabilities, and expertise for this new strategic environment. This strategy identifies

a phased approach on how we are going to achieve the desired conditions in space over the next 10 years.”

Through the strategy, DoD will advance spacepower through the pursuit of three objectives: Maintain Space Superiority; Provide Space Support to National, Joint, and Combined Operations; and Ensure Space Stability.

Additionally, the Department will pursue four priority lines of effort to achieve the desired conditions while addressing identified threats, opportunities, and challenges: 1. Build a comprehensive military advantage in space.

2. Integrate military spacepower into national, joint, and combined operations.

3. Shape the strategic environment.

4. Cooperate with allies, partners, industry, and other U.S. Government departments and agencies.
