P-S GAR celebrates first base renaming

KA’ENA POINT SPACE FORCE STATION, Hawaii — The Ka’ena Point Satellite Tracking Station, Hawaii, home to one of eight remote satellite tracking stations in the Satellite Control Network, has been renamed to reflect its role in the U.S. Space Force.

Following a ceremony held June 16, the station is now known as Ka’ena Point Space Force Station. The station is located approximately 40 miles from Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu.

“The renaming of this installation is more than just a ceremony, it is the assumption of a proud and priceless heritage and the beginning of a tradition,” said Maj. Brandon Hammond, commander of Detachment 3, 21st Space Operations Squadron.

Ka’ena Point is home to Detachment 3, 21st Space Operations Squadron, which has been operational for more than 60 years.

Part of Space Delta 6 — Cyberspace Operations, headquartered at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Detachment 3 is part of a crucial network of sites operating 24 hours per day, supporting more than 185 satellites performing mission operations around the world. Those missions include manned spaceflight, communications, reconnaissance, navigation, weather and ballistic missile early warning.

Pride through a lens

EESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. — By definition pride is a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.

It is also a consciousness of one’s own dignity.

Colloquially, in the LGBTQ+ community, Pride is a rainbow-heavy, month-long celebration in June whose roots can be directly linked to the first ever pride parade in Manhattan June 28, 1970 that commemorated the Stonewall Riots of 1969.

Beyond its origin and parades, the meaning of Pride in the June celebration sense is malleable.

Here is my personal experience and take on the importance of Pride and what it means to me.

In the spring of 2011, at the ripe young age of 17, sitting at the family computer watching Tegan and Sara music videos on YouTube (if you know, you know), my mom asked me the last question I, a Baptist-raised girl in rural South Mississippi, wanted to be asked.

“Kristen, are you gay?”

YouTube videos. Probably posting things on my Tumblr blog too. You know the answer. She knows the answer. At this point in my life, I have finally stopped running from the answer.

All of my blood has evaporated from my body, I think, though I know my face is scarlet. I’ve never been a good liar, so I don’t even try.

“Yes.” *Tangible silence* “Well, you know it’s wrong.”

This is a good time to bring in a word I think is essential to the idea and existence of Pride: shame.

Those split-second physical changes that happened when my mom asked me if I was gay weren’t just the normal effects of a teenager reacting to an embarrassing personal question from their mom. It was tsunami-sized waves of the shame I was programmed (conditioned?) to feel from years of being taught that homosexuality is wrong and unnatural and an “abomination” and the shame I worried my own mother, who agrees with those teachings, would now feel about, me, her daughter.

even dating my first girlfriend, very secretly, months before, but from this moment: the pinnacle of my shame.

That June, I did not “celebrate” pride month. To be fair there weren’t exactly that many ways to within a 100-mile radius of Lucedale, Mississippi, on a fast food employee’s budget. But also…why would I? I wasn’t proud.

The next year on the other hand...

After a year of being somewhat on my own in college, surrounded by people from all types of backgrounds, I was a lot less inclined to hide for fear of what someone might think. At least not from my peers. Less shame. But still some shame. Still very much afraid of most of my family finding out.

I had found a pretty great LGBTQ+ circle (shout out to Brandon, Kate, and Haley for being crucial to my self-acceptance) and with them and my then-girlfriend I attended my first Pride event.

Pride month is an avenue to safely express who you are, an avenue that didn’t, and in some cases still doesn’t, exist everywhere.

Sure, a weekend on the beaches of Florida in tacky rainbow garb with flags flying for miles is fun, but what was poignant was the outpouring of love and acceptance for miles. And the validating sense of normalcy.

That last part was extra important.

Feeling normal. It’s amazing how much of a weight off my shoulders not feeling different — in a bad way — was.

That June I still wouldn’t say I was “proud.” I had a deep hole of self-loathing to climb out of, but a ladder to climb out can’t materialize on its own. No matter how introverted I was — am — a circle, or ladder, of support is always crucial.

The next few years, I continued to tag along with friends to at least one event each June, but more importantly I progressed in the realm of acceptance and living my life like any other “normal” person would. Normal enough to where I started to lose sight of the significance of Pride Month.

But there are realizations that bring me down to earth one way or another that make me understand the importance of pride.

A common argument I come across in

opposition to organizations, including Department of Defense entities celebrating Pride month is: “What someone does on their personal time doesn’t matter to me as long as they get the job done. Why do we have to have a month for them?”

My suggestion to those who have that way of thinking, especially those who served before Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was repealed in 2011 is this: Think about every time you talked about your opposite sex girlfriend, boyfriend, fiancée, fiancé, husband or wife at work or school or wherever. Even a casual mention of an ex. From something big like letting your office know you’ll be on leave for your wedding/honeymoon to every mundane instance such as, “Oh, my boyfriend really likes that band, too.”

Chances are you’ve never hesitated to mention something so….normal, and nobody thought: “Wow, I didn’t need to have that deeply intimate information about what bands her boyfriend likes shoved in my face.”

Could you imagine not being able to say such innocuous, yet important to you, tidbits like that on a daily basis whether it’s for fear of reprimand, pre-2011, or for fear of being ostracized from your peers or shunned by your family?

It seems crazy, but in 2021 this is still very much a reality for many LGBTQ+ members, and this is just one, surface-level explanation of something your fellow LGBTQ+ service members may be dealing with.

On a personal level, 10 years later, it’s still a touchy subject with a lot of my family, or maybe I should call it a notouchy subject because we just pretend my personal life doesn’t exist. It is truly a source of pain, but that is strangely a welcome upgrade from shame.

While there has been a wealth of progression in the past decade, America still has work to do when it comes to the treatment and protection of LGBTQ+ citizens.

What I’m saying is…

Celebrating Pride is important. So is having actual pride, because ultimately, you’re stuck with you.

Pride month is an avenue to safely express who you are, an avenue that didn’t, and in some cases still doesn’t, exist everywhere. If you’re not already proud of who you are, it’s a great starting place.

If you don’t have a good support system, it’s a great time to find one. If you’re just an ally or “have a gay friend,” it’s a good time to tell them you’re proud of them. If none of this applies to you and you still don't understand, that's okay, too.

I’m still not a poster child for self-acceptance by any means, but I am proud of this part of myself, and Pride was the catalyst that got me here.

Happy totally important and necessary Pride (that nobody is forcing anyone to celebrate).

Violence prevention office offers community rock painting

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The Schriever Air Force Base Violence Prevention Office hosted the first “Our Community Rocks” event at Schriever AFB, Colorado, May 13.

The monthly event provides a fun activity to do with friends and family by gathering and painting rocks together, then dispersing them around base.

“It creates a reason to spend time walking around, being observant and connecting with loved-ones,” said Jessica Ditson, Schriever AFB violence prevention integrator. “They can go on a rock hunt or they can create some rocks to add to the hunt.”

The idea for “Our Community Rocks” originated when Ditson stumbled across a children’s book centering on bonding and collaboration with others.

“The story is super cute for kids ages 3-8. The moral of the story is that by working together and being creative we can spread happiness,” Ditson said.

Ditson will send the book to the Child Development Center to garner interest among Schriever youth.

As rocks are completed, they will be dispersed around base by Ruth Moore, Schriever AFB school liaison officer and the spouses group.

“The goal is to have [painted rocks] around the CDC, parks, housing and trails on Schriever,” said Ditson.

Anyone with base access, including military spouses, active duty, guard and reserve members and civilians are encouraged to participate in creating and spreading the community rocks.

Future dates for the group painting sessions are June 17 and July 15 from 11 p.m. to 1 p.m.

This event is held at Bennie’s in a Restricted Area on base and will require an RA badge or an escort to enter.

Faces of Space: Spc. 3 Isabella Perez

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— For many, when joining the military, they leave behind their childhood room or their textbooks, but for U.S. Space Force Spc. 3 Isabella Perez, Space Delta 3 — Space Electronic Warfare, 16th Space Control Squadron space systems operator, she left behind corporate life and the water-cooler.

Joining at 29, the former accounts payable technician felt a little different than her new peers.

“I joined active duty pretty late,” said Perez. “I joined a little over a year ago at age 29. I’ve heard people refer to themselves as joining late in life at age 23-25, and so when people hear my age their next question is typically why I joined.”

Perez always had “join the military” in the back of her mind, but she decided enough was enough and didn’t want to regret never making the leap.

“I had wanted to join the military for a long time, ever since high school, but life would get in the way and the timing was never right,” said Perez. “That’s when I realized that I didn’t want to look back and think about what could have been.”

Being older than the typical first-term Airman or Guardian, Perez had different challenges when leaving civilian life behind.

“I was honestly pretty scared to join so late, to have to leave my job and uproot a life that was already established to start something completely new and foreign,” Perez admitted, “I had a lot of doubts about if I was making the right choice. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with a bunch of kids that just graduated high school or that I would be secluded and everyone would see me as some old

lady! I knew joining the military would mean living a very different life than I had before, and that was part of the appeal.”

While leaving one career for another was challenging, Perez explained how the

office life led her to search for more.

“It might sound cheesy, but I just wanted to do something worthwhile,” said Perez.

“I had always had an office job where what I did maybe had an impact on a company

spreadsheet, but otherwise didn’t have any real impact. I wanted to do something that would have an impact on others. That’s why I joined the military and it’s why I’m glad I joined space, what we do has an impact on our overall mission.”

After Perez joined, she noticed another major difference between civilian and military life.

“The people in my current job are more willing to go out and know the person they work with,” explained Perez. “Maybe it’s because a lot of us moved out here without our families, but the comradery is not something you can find out in [the] corporate [world].”

Those around Perez have noticed her extra life experiences show in her work and see a wingman in and out of uniform.

“She can be the person that higher ranking individuals rely on because she has more life experience, which she also offers to younger Airmen and Guardians,” said U.S. Space Force Spc. 3 Jenny MansillaSolorzano, fellow DEL 3, 16th SPCS space systems operator. “The people at our unit really take to her kindness and sweet personality. During training she would help out other specialists and have more patience to explain something if the person doesn’t understand. She is hardworking and always committed to the team.”

As Perez prepares for a short notice deployment, her supervisor wanted to send her off with a message of assurance.

“The words of confidence I would give her is just continue to use your life experience to guide the younger specialists; you have a great outlook on life and are a positive influence to everyone around you,” said U.S. Space Force Sgt. Shannon Patterson, 16th SPCS non-commissioned officer in charge of Operational Support.

Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year.

Heat can be very taxing on the body with even a short period of exposure. Everyone can be vulnerable to heat, but some more so than others.

• Young children and infants are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness and death, as their bodies are less able to adapt to heat than are adults.

• Older adults, particularly those with preexisting diseases, take certain medications, are living alone or with limited mobility who are exposed to extreme heat can experience multiple adverse effects.

• People with chronic medical conditions are more likely to have a serious health problem during a heat wave than healthy people.

• Pregnant women are also at higher risk. Extreme heat events have been associated with adverse birth outcomes such as low birth weight, preterm birth, and infant mortality, as well as congenital cataracts.

It is NEVER safe to leave a child, disabled person or pet locked in a car, even in the winter. If you have a toddler in your household, lock your cars, even in your own driveway.
