SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Space Delta 9 — Orbital Warfare’s 1st Space Operations Squadron was notified of its selection as a Department of Air Force-level winner for the Air Force Association’s 2021 “Citation of Honor” Aerospace Award, April 9, 2021. The Citation of Honor dedication reads: “For the outstanding contribution of an individual or organization to the development of aerospace power for the betterment of mankind.” In the squadron’s first year under the newly-formed U.S. Space Force, 1st SOPS members established never-before seen combat readiness standards through stateof-the-art tactics aimed at increasing the advantages of friendly forces over potential adversaries. Critical to his organization’s success, U.S. Space Force Capt. Andrew Marin, 1 SOPS assistant director of operations, said, “Innovation and great ideas are not rank dependent; so many of our initiatives came from enlisted technicians and young officers — they are the tactical subject matter experts here.” Furthermore, 1st SOPS was critical in designing a process that helps U.S. Space Command assess risks related to combat and how to best synergize forces across multiple domains — an endeavor which directly shaped a concept of operations for the National Defense Strategy task implementation. In addition to the aforementioned break-

throughs, 1st SOPS combat engineers, led by Engineering Flight Commander, U.S. Air Force Maj. Tim Flesch, also successfully conducted Commercial Augmentation Service tests to supplement Space Control Network contact requirements. They did this using commercial antennas around the globe in order to download Space Defense data directly from spacecraft. What this amounts to is more resilient communications infrastructure from which Airmen and Guardians can effectively carry out their mission. Over 800 tests were completed on the Operationally Responsive Space-5, alone, a single-spacecraft constellation with the primary mission of providing space domain awareness. Another highlight for 1st SOPS took place when U.S. Space Force Capt. Clare O’Reilly, 1st SOPS mission commander, participated in the first USSF Core Values
conference. “Guardians from all over the world brainstormed our guiding values, and within 1st SOPS, [we] worked with almost all of our members to bring to life exactly what ‘orbital warfare operations’ look like in practice,” said O’Reilly. “In this squadron, leadership is not something that solely depends on your rank or your duty title. We empower all Airmen and Guardians with this, to allow them to bring ideas forward and actually have ownership in all aspects of our mission,” said 1st SOPS Senior Enlisted Leader, U.S. Space Force Senior Master Sgt. Richard Justice. It was precisely because of this mentality that 1st SOPS was able to accomplish the kind of work that ultimately led to AFA’s decision to recognize the unit with the honor. What exactly does “orbital warfare op-
erations” look like in practice? As part of DEL 9, combat mission crews conduct 24-hour operations to deter, defend and defeat adversary threats in space. Combat crews, orbital analysts and combat engineers are responsible for planning and executing operations of spacecraft in low-earth and geosynchronous orbits all in the name of protecting and defending U.S. and allied interests in space. For 1st SOPS, the future of their mission is ever advancing. “It is a privilege to be a part of the Orbital Warfare spacepower discipline; from major training overhauls, to force structure realignments, and innovative teams, the mission area continues to evolve to dominate fielded and future threats,” said U.S. Space Force Tech. Sgt. Cory Takaki, 1st SOPS flight chief. U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. Bryan Bell, 1st SOPS commander, is incredibly grateful for the hard work 1st SOPS members like Takaki, Marin, O’Reilly, Flesch and Justice put forth, ultimately leading to the citation. “The Space Force’s inaugural capstone doctrine challenges us to pursue new and bold ideas, take prudent risks and learn from failure,” said Bell. “Our command team gets to witness this as the women and men of 1st SOPS take daily ownership of this charge — we are extremely proud of the team and grateful that others recognize their dedication to enhancing military spacepower and securing our nation’s interests on-orbit.” Bell is set to receive the award on behalf of his squadron sometime before the end of the year.

Get ready for PCS season with TRICARE Staff Report TRICARE Communications
FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Are you moving away this summer? If so, you aren’t alone. Summer is a time of transition for military families with permanent change of station (PCS) orders, which means adjusting to new surroundings and new people. Whether you’re moving to another state or relocating overseas, there are important steps you need to take to ensure a smooth PCS move. One of them is making sure you have TRICARE coverage in your new location. “Moving is one of many Qualifying Life Events that allows enrollment changes outside of TRICARE Open Season,” said Elan Green, acting chief of the Policy and Programs Section of the TRICARE Health Plan at the Defense Health Agency. “If you have PCS orders, you and your family will have 90 days from the date of your address change to make eligible enrollment changes to your TRICARE plan.” Here are some tips from TRICARE to help you prepare for your PCS change.
Don’t disenroll from your current plan before you move Your TRICARE contractor can’t complete your enrollment transfer until you arrive at your new location. So, it’s important that you don’t disenroll from your plan before you move. This ensures you’re covered for any care you need while traveling to your destination. If you disenroll before you move,
“MOVING IS ONE OF MANY QUALIFYING LIFE EVENTS that allows enrollment changes outside of TRICARE Open Season.”
U.S. Army photo by Eric Pilgrim
Transportation officials say the peak moving season is about six weeks away. Because of this, they are asking military personnel and their families to start preparing their move now.
you’ll only be able to get care at a military hospital or clinic if space is available. Does your family have TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) coverage? If so, make sure you or your family members notify the TDP contractor, United Concordia Companies, Inc., of your new address and contact information. The TDP is available worldwide, which means your family’s dental coverage travels with them. Whether you’re moving
stateside or overseas, you can visit the TDP website to find a dentist near you.
Let the TRICARE contractor in your new location know that you moved Once you’ve arrived at your new location, contact the TRICARE contractor for the region you’re in. They’ll coordinate with your previous contractor, if necessary, to transfer your coverage to your new location
and help you get the care you need. You may have the same TRICARE contractor in your new location and they’ll help set up your coverage. For example, if you’re enrolled in TRICARE Prime and moving stateside to another Prime Service Area, your TRICARE contractor will initiate the transfer of your TRICARE Prime coverage to your new location. Or, you may be eligible to enroll in TRICARE Select. If you’re an active duty service member, you must enroll in either TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Prime Remote. Are you moving overseas? If so, call your TRICARE Overseas Program (TOP) Regional Call Center assigned to your new location. Only command-sponsored active duty family members can enroll in TOP Prime or TOP Prime Remote. Retirees and their family members are eligible for TOP Select. Check out the TRICARE Plans Overview and TRICARE Plan Finder to learn more about your health plan options. Keep in mind, your TRICARE contractor won’t change if you’re moving within the same region. But you may need to find another primary care manager (PCM) or health care provider in your new location.
Update your DEERS records Your records must be up-to-date in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) to use TRICARE. As outcontinued page 7 | LIFE EVENTS

Joint training to refine skills By Airman 1st Class Kaitlin Castillo Peterson-Schriever Garrison Public Affairs
PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Approximately 300 Airmen from the 21st Medical Group went back to the basics of medical training with U.S. Army combat medical specialists from the 10th Field Hospital, 627th Hospital Center, Fort Carson, in a joint training day, July 8, 2021, at Peterson Air Force Base. Although, Fort Carson and Peterson Air Force Base are close in proximity, this is the first time the 21st MDG and the Army combat medical specialists have trained together. The training consisted of familiarization with litter carrying and radio etiquette, as well as other briefs throughout the day. “We are very excited to build a platform of joint training with our sister service and look forward to future training opportunities across the Colorado Military Health System,” said Charity Harmon, 21st MDG medical emergency manager. With COVID-19 cases in Colorado Springs declining, the medical group trains to ensure Airmen are ready for a “new nor-
mal” by building upon their skills to analyze their current disaster response and improve on their current planning, response and recovery operations. “We have such a unique opportunity to expand our communications and preparedness across the Front Range,” said Harmon. “It is important that we take advantage of these opportunities to practice how we play with other agencies. Getting back to basics is one way we will facilitate building working and training relationships.” The 21st MDG mission is to provide support to power by cultivating a thriving team through developing resilient and agile professionals who optimize medically ready forces, deliver trusted care and community health support. “I believe this training will help me in the future by better preparing for the unknown,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Elsie Nelson, 21st MDG medical records technician. “Practicing skills we do not use every day will help us be more confident when it comes to an emergency situation and understanding our roles and responsibilities.”

Faces of Space: 1st Lt. Monica Callan By Tech. Sgt. Michael Wykes
1st Lt MONICA CALLAN
Peterson-Schriever Garrison Public Affairs
PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Space Force 1st Lt. Monica Callan, Space Delta 3 — Space Electronic Warfare, 16th Space Control Squadron electronic warfare operations officer, never anticipated her path as an enlisted pharmacy technician would eventually lead her to becoming one of the first officers in the U.S. Space Force to deploy as a space liaison officer advising U.S. Marines in the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command theater. As with many things in life, most plans never work out as they’re written down. Hailing from the Bronx, New York, Callan’s plan was to go to college and figure out life along the way. Shortly into that first journey, she took a detour into the U.S. Air Force. “I enlisted in 2012 as a pharmacy technician, when I decided I wanted to do something different and I wasn’t getting what I wanted out of college,” said Callan. Though the military wasn’t initially in the cards for Callan, she received inspiration from her father, a combat veteran who deployed multiple times with both the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps from 2006 to 2014. “My father had deployed a few times as a law enforcement officer to U.S. Central Command, but was eventually returned home after suffering injuries sustained in an improvised explosive device explosion,” said Callan. “Because of his experiences, I saw the military as a bigger team that could challenge me. I wanted to be a part of that.” After spending a few years in the enlisted ranks, Callan applied to and was accepted into the U.S. Air Force Academy. She graduated from USAFA in 2018 and commissioned into the USAF as a space officer, landing her first assignment at the “Top of the World,” Thule Air Base, Greenland. While there, she served as a crew commander on the Upgraded Early Warning Radar, and as the deputy flight commander of mission assurance. She currently resides within the 16th SPCS, where she describes

her job as something she never thought she’d get to do. “Honestly, I never thought I’d ever get to work in the space career field,” said Callan. “Growing up, it seemed like it was for rocket scientists. It’s been amazing to see my crew members learn and gain confidence in what they do, and I love helping them and working alongside them on task.” Self-described as “wearing her heart on her sleeve,” Callan says the best part of her

peccable character and drive to improve the mission and people around her,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. Angelo Fernandez, 16th SPCS commander. “She has an uncanny ability to seek out areas for improvement and find solutions to make it better.” According to Fernandez, Callan performs at the same level regardless of her work environment. “Lieutenant Callan has done this while in garrison, and deployed, and with her work as a space liaison officer on float with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit traversing the South China Sea,” said Fernandez. “Her relentless work ethic and competency solidified a sustainable support for some of our key mission partners in the IndoPacific region.” Outside of the office, Callan says she enjoys working out, taking spin class, hiking and snowboarding, and is ready to try anything that challenges her. This mentality worked out perfect when she was selected to deploy as a space liaison officer aboard the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit Float 21.1, in the USINDOPACOM Theater. “My time getting to support the 31st MEU is something that I will never forget,” said Callan. “It was kind of like paying it forward since my dad got to work with the Marines and I’m glad I volunteered for it. It really opened my eyes up to what our sister services do and I am truly humbled by their daily sacrifices.” Callan also stated, “I hope I can get the opportunity again to do something like this because it is something I will never forget.” Callan will be carrying her space knowledge and work ethic to her next assignment at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, where she will continue to educate and learn from those around her. “You never know when someone might come to you with a general space question that might not be what you are an expert in, but for the time-being we need to be better stewards about space and help educate at the appropriate levels,” said Callan. “There’s always something new to learn and I’ll forever be doing that!”
