I

recently gave the keynote address at the annual summit of the Colorado Advisory Council for Military Education. In preparation for the presentation I spent a significant amount of time contemplating what skills the military values in its officer, enlisted and civilian workforces and what institutions of higher learning can do to help build those skills into their curriculum.

I shared with the participants the military needs personnel with strong public speaking, writing and critical thinking skills who can lead and build collaborative teams capable of meeting deadlines with well thought-out courses of action who are comfortable providing actionable recommendations to leadership.

The advisory council participants, which consisted of college educators, recruiters and admissions personnel strongly agreed with my list and expressed it’s not just the military who demand these skills. Private businesses, nonprofit organizations and local governments are searching for college and vocational school graduates who possess these skills.

The advisory council participants confirmed my suspicion that the biggest challenges they see in both brick and mortar and on-line classrooms is the inability of students

to succinctly communicate in a manner that allows a leader or manager to make good decisions.

The ability to communicate is in great demand and is highly valued, both in and outside the military. Improving these skills requires regularly stepping out of your comfort zone and actively looking for opportunities to improve writing and speaking skills. Communication is part of everything we do in the Air Force. Whether it’s briefing, writing emails or composing an official Air Force

We need your innovative ideas to ensure we remain the greatest fighting force the world has ever seen. memorandum; communication skills underpin effective mission accomplishment. The more you write and speak the easier it becomes and the better you become at it.

To paraphrase Senior Master Sgt. 50th Space Wing hosts ALS graduation

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing hosted the Airman Leadership School class 19-5 graduation at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, June 13.

Eleven senior airmen from Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, were among the 48 graduates.

Airman Leadership School is a five-week Air Force program designed to develop Airmen into effective supervisors. It also focuses on developing leadership abilities and building communication skills.

“We are so proud of you and so excited for what is in store in the future,” Grant said.

Col. Jennifer Grant, 50th Space Wing commander, was the presiding official at this graduation.

“We are so proud of you and so excited for what is in store in the future,” Grant said. “We look forward to you continuing to progress in the Air Force and make this Air Force even better than it is today.

Continue to pay it forward and develop the leaders that will follow in your footsteps.”

Master Sgt. Carter Bryan, 50th Operations Group superintendent of standardization and evaluation, was the guest speaker at class 19-5’s graduation.

“ALS is like a shot of motivation in the arm,” Bryan said. “Thank you class 19-5 for several years’ worth of motivation.”

Bryan told the graduated to lead by being involved.

“If you’re in a work detail and your team’s tops are off, it should be obvious to anyone who the leader is,” he said. “The same goes if your whole team is wearing occupational camouflage pattern and no one can tell your rank until you’re three feet apart.”

Senior Airman Manuel Gonzalez, 50th Security Forces Squadron response force leader, was a distinguished graduate in class 19-5.

“This course really helped me grow as a leader,” Gonzalez said.

“I’m excited about the impact it had on me and I’m even more excited about the impact it may have on my future Airmen.”

Gonzalez represents the leadership and discipline required of defenders to protect Air Force installations at home and abroad.

Grant said she was proud of class 19-5.

“You had five weeks of space and grace to grow,” Grant said. “A lot of learning, a lot of opportunity and now the door is open for you to return to your units and make a similar investment in those you will lead.”

50TH SFS PLANS AND PROGRAMS

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Security Forces Squadron Plans and Programs Office reviews and validates all Air Force policy updates disseminating them to Defenders within the unit to ensure they remain a fit, professional, approachable force which is lethal when required in the performance of their duties.

Plans and program’s day-to-day consists of reviewing memorandums of understanding or memorandum agreements and looking for any updates to Air Force Instructions pertaining to Security Forces.

“It all comes down to making sure the 50th SFS is as effective as possible,” Tech. Sgt. James Foster Jr., 50th SFS noncommissioned officer in charge of plans and programs resource protection said. “The Defenders on flight conduct their day-to-day duties, but it’s my responsibility to ensure they have the appropriate guidance to do their job the right way,” he said.

Master Sgt. Rocky Thompson, 50th SFS plans and programs superintendent, said his office’s role within the squadron and the wing is paramount to mission success.

“Plans and programs has many functions within the section,” he said. “Installation security handles updates and rewrites to the integrated defense plans and base security plans, is responsible for the geographically separated units unique security needs and coordinates updates and deviations with them”.

Foster said policies and operating instructions change approximately every two-to-four years and it is up to him to ensure unit members receive the information.

“A few years ago drones weren’t really a thing,” he said.

“Now anyone can get a drone, so documents have been updated to reflect this to ensure we know what our guidance is in regards to dealing with drones,” he said.”

specific training is required such as a publications and forms course and support agreement training ensuring there’s a clear understanding of what is expected.

Besides personnel at 50th SCS and 50th SW, Foster said he works with anyone and everyone.

“We have a MOU with El Paso County and Ellicott School districts where in the event school’s children and staff may need to relocate to the base,” he said. “We also have MOUs with agencies off base regarding transportation, fire departments and police departments.”

Foster said his mission contributes to helping Defenders remain lethal and professional in their craft.

Staff, family tour brings new faces to base

“My role in the squadron is to provide the most up-todate guidance,” he said. “This assures Defenders not only are speaking on items in the regulation but they know what they are doing as well.

With Air Force leadership naming 2019 as the Year of the Defender, Foster says it is a humbling show of appreciation.

“Seeing appreciation for what we do, regardless of however people may perceive us, is nice,” he said. “A lot of what we do doesn’t usually end in thank you.”

Tech. Sgt. Teri Cervenak, 50th Security Forces Squadron flight sergeant, admits it was not easy to obtain her degree, with having to balance multiple tasks to get it accomplished.

“It was an honor to be here, my family and my co-workers were here to support me and that meant a lot to me, I feel blessed,” Cervenak said. “It was a long time trying to obtain my degree, juggling life, deployments and everything but it’s great to be done.”

Master Sgt. Jeremy Campbell, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron superintendent infrastructure, reflected on why we celebrate this special day for Airmen here at Schriever AFB. “We do this to honor a significant accomplishment (in our) enlisted Airmen’s careers,” he said. “As with any recognition, it is always great when you can share that moment with family and peers.”

As closing remarks, Fischer expressed gratitude towards those Airmen graduating.

“Your accomplishment is fantastic,” he said. “Learning and growing is a lifelong pursuit. You balanced life, a fulltime job and still achieved a degree. That is very deserving of our respect. Congratulations.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Top 3 and the First Sergeants Council hosted the 2019 Community College of the Air Force higher education graduation ceremony here at Schriever AFB, June 18.

Senior Master Sgt. Michael Welch, 50th Contracting Squadron superintendent, was the guest speaker and Col. Jack Fischer, 50th Space Wing vice commander, presided over the ceremony where more than 100 people were in attendance.

Welch provided insight on his experiences with CCAF and how obtaining a degree has helped him achieve his educational and career goals.

“For me, getting my first CCAF diploma 10 years ago was a relief and proof to myself that working towards a goal can be achieved if you want it enough,” he said. “A big reason I joined (the Air Force) was to complete a Bachelor’s degree. It was definitely a stepping stone to bigger educational and career goals.”

Welch finished his graduation speech with the following remarks.

“Congratulations to all of you, your willingness to venture outside of your comfort zone demonstrates your drive to improve yourself, invest in your future and the future of the world’s greatest Air Force. Keep pushing and keep walking through the doors of opportunity.”

During his speech to the graduates, Fischer highlighted the importance of pursuing knowledge as an Airman and citizen of the world.

“An Airman’s soul ignited, armed with the continuous pursuit of knowledge is an unstoppable force,” Fischer said. “One that will make an impact on this world. Whether you’re in uniform or not, by pursuing your CCAF, you have armed yourself with what you need to make an impact on our shared future, and I for one am glad that it is in the hands of such an amazing group.”

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.

— As the space domain continues to grow, so does the need for access to space.

The U.S. Air Force and Space Command are powered by innovation. Because of this, Vandenberg Air Force Base is continually making improvements to base facilities, equipment and the way Airmen and mission partners do their job in order to complete the space mission.

“Our mission is to provide robust, relevant and efficient spaceport and range capabilities for the nation,” said Col. Michael Hough, 30th Space Wing commander. “However, as space domain progresses, so must we.”

The installation has come a long way since 1958, when it was repurposed from a deactivated U.S. Army training camp, to a U.S. Air Force missile launch and training base.

Since then, the base has developed better amenities to increase productivity and has expanded its launch facilities, allowing space for more commercial partners.

There are many different components.

Whether it be 30th Space Wing Airmen, mission partners, both government agencies and private companies or contractors, who contribute to launching a missile or rocket at Vandenberg AFB, each diverse role plays an important part in accomplishing the mission.

“On day of launch, we provide mission assurance. We provide technical oversight of everything happening to assure no incidents occur,” said Lt. Col. Brian Chatman, 1st Air

and Space Test Squadron commander. “We’re shifting our methodology for how we provide mission assurance from days-of-old, to days-of-new for a more practical approach.”

Members of the 1st ASTS continuously implement innovations regarding space lift operations by evaluating and operating current launch and landing operations. By assessing the Space Launch Complex modifications that industry partners create, the 1st ASTS engineers ensure they understand the changes or modifications made, as well as evaluate any risks that are associated with the changes.

“Airmen from the squadron are taking tactical approaches, tailoring analysis to provide risk assessments to the commander of the Space and Missile Center for a flight worthiness certification,” Chatman said.

Through maintaining the range and retaining Airmen, Vandenberg AFB is creating a better chance of accessing space through members of 30th SW, such as 1 ASTS, and mission partners. With the help of each squadron and various tenant units on base, the mission continues to be successful.

“This is an exciting time in the space community, and I’m looking forward to working even closer with allies and partners to guarantee unconstrained access to and freedom to operate in space,” Hough said.

Through expansion and revamping of routines and facilities, innovative Airmen continue to improve Vandenberg AFB range capabilities, supporting not only the current mission, but future generations and their access to space.

145 years of tradition

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Child Development Center and School Age Care program children helped plant a ponderosa pine tree in honor of Arbor Day celebration and the Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, partnership with Tree City USA, June 14.

“Planting trees is an act of kindness and optimism, for our friends and neighbors, or future generations,” said Andy Schlosberg, Colorado State Forest Service representative. “The trees we plant clean the air, beautify our neighborhoods, supply homes for wildlife, and conserve energy and topsoil. Life is just better when we live among the trees.”

on the many advantages we derive from trees.”

Schlosberg said the celebration of Arbor Day represents an opportunity for children to take positive action to make the world a better place and to learn about tress and the natural world.

“It’s an opportunity for neighbors to join together, for communities to reach across barriers to work for the common good,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to celebrate life and the interconnectedness of all creation.”

Schlosberg presented Lt. Col. Christopher Teke, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron commander, the award of Tree City USA for the 21st year.

“Because Schriever Air Force Base has shown a commitment to maintaining and improving the trees that make up its community forest, I am proud to present on behalf of the National Arbor Day Foundation, and the Colorado State Forest Service, the award of Tree City USA,” Schlosberg said. “This is Schriever’s 21st year as a Tree City USA, an accomplishment you should all be proud of. Congratulations and thank you.”

Teke began his speech explaining, “Arbor Day is observed in the United States as a time to plant trees and reflect on the many advantages we derive from trees.”

Teke explained the 145-year-old tradition began with a proclamation in Nebraska to observe the first Arbor Day April 10, 1874, encouraging homesteaders to plant trees that provide shade, shelter and beauty for the residence of the largely treeless plains.

“For the last 21 years, we have joined forces with the Colorado chapter of the Arbor Day Foundation and Colorado State Forest Service to observe this national day,” he said. “The planting of the tree symbolizes an act of faith in the future. By planting trees today, we are leaving a legacy to be enjoyed by future generations.”

Teke added planting trees also helps the environment.

“Trees filter air pollution, provide wildlife habitat and shade from the hot sun and protection from the cold winds,” he said. “Today we are planting a tree and making another investment in our future. Our commitment to planting trees and being part of the Tree City USA program is a great way to show Schriever’s commitment to the environment.”

Teke said Schriever AFB has exponentially grown during its relatively short existence and will continue to grow to support the mission.

“We, too, have a task before us to provide shade, shelter and beauty for future residents and workers of our base,” he said.

the growth zone if we wish to continually improve.

The second point I shared with the advisory board is the need for Air Force professionals who can apply critical thinking skills to every aspect of their jobs to eradicate inefficiencies. I have high expectations of the members of the 50th Mission Support Group.

We face constant deadlines, and there are often times when we owe a quick response to higher headquarters. My expectation is the members of the 50th MSG quickly apply critical thinking skills to address complex problems and present the results succinctly.

The ability to communicate is in great demand and is highly valued, both in and

outside the military.

I understand distilling a complex problem down to a one page talking paper with course of actions and a recommendation is not easy, but it’s the right thing to do. As we work on tough problems and discover inefficiencies in the workplace we need to utilize opportunities like the wing’s iWARs campaign to capture and formalize improvements. I challenge you to leave your comfort zone and pitch your ideas to the iWAR panel.

The message I delivered to the Colorado Advisory Council for Military Education is the same message I deliver to you. We need you to improve your writing and speaking skills. We need you to think critically. We need you to lead and work collaboratively with your peers and supervisors. We need your innovative ideas to ensure we remain the greatest fighting force the world has ever seen. We need you to be on the champion team and to remain champions by thinking innovatively so our enemies understand we are 100 percent committed to defend our way of life in air, space and cyberspace.

Grilling Safety • Use outdoors only, away from home, deck or overhanging branches. Keep children and pets away.

• Keep your grill clean by removing grease buildup from grills or trays below… never leave unattended.

• Propane grill: Check for tight connection on tank hose or regulator; check for leaks with soap/water solution.

Fitness affects mission readiness

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE — Being mission ready is a requirement of the Air Force and Airmen are responsible for ensuring they remain physically fit.

Tech. Sgt. Alayna DeHerrera, 50th Space Wing noncommissioned officer in charge of wing administration, remains physically fit by body building.

She said staying physically fit is one of the four pillars of Comprehensive Airman Fitness.

The four pillars are mental, social, physical and spiritual, and practicing them is intended to build and sustain resilience in the work place and community.

“Your focus should be on building a better you.

It doesn’t matter what other people think.”

“Staying fit improves mission readiness,” DeHerrera said. “It keeps you in a fit-tofight mindset. It’s important to always stay prepared because you never know what is going to happen.”

She said it is important to create and follow a workout routine.

“There’s overtraining and undertraining,” DeHerrera said. “By not taking care of yourself, it can lead to illnesses and diseases. By overtraining, however, you can injure yourself in the weight room, which will affect your job and ultimately the mission.”

Airman 1st Class Dominick Cuervo, 50th Space Communications Squadron defense operations trainee, studies multiple martial arts, including Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu and Judo, to stay in good physical shape and to practice discipline.

“When I started to work out, I had no clue what I was doing,” he said. “I thought I was stronger than I was, so I put on more weight than I could handle. Luckily I didn’t get hurt, but had I not asked for help while I was struggling, I could’ve hurt myself really bad.”

Although Cuervo risked injury, he said staying physically fit can be fun.

“Become involved,” he said. “Find a hobby and stay active, whether you choose rock climbing, hiking, martial arts or yoga, there are plenty of ways to stay in shape other than lifting weights.”

Cuervo said working out can be a journey where you see yourself grow.

“It takes discipline,” he said. “Start small and work your way up, there’s a natural progression to it.”

He said staying fit takes requires commitment.

“It takes no small part of dedication,” Cuervo said. “The process isn’t all sunshine and roses, but by staying fit, you’re able to live a healthier and more fulfilling life.”

DeHerrera said there is a stigma that scares people away from the gym.

“Everyone’s at the gym to better themselves,” she said. “Your focus should be on building a better you. It doesn’t matter what other people think. You’re creating a legacy.

Don’t worry about what others think, you’re doing it for you” She said having the right mindset is essential to achieve fitness goals.

“It’s not something someone will hand you,” DeHerrera said. “You have to put in the work and do it yourself. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.

Someone can give you all the motivation, supplements and work out plans you need, but if you aren’t willing to put forth the effort, you won’t go anywhere.”

DeHerrera said working out is only a

small part of being physically fit.

“Diet is probably 80-90 percent of staying in shape,” she said. “Your diet is the major piece, if you don’t start eating right you won’t see the results you want. Your diet could be 1,500 calories a day, but if those 1,500 calories are coming from cookies, the nutritional value is very different even if the calorie count is the same.”

She said results do not come immediately and patience is important.

“Look at the long term,” DeHerrera said.

“It might be tough to get off the couch, and give up an hour of your time. But if you look at the big picture, an hour is a very small amount of time compared to the 24 we have in a day. It’s better for you and your family.”
