T

he reach of a key spouse can change lives. I often get asked “What is the Key Spouse Club?” Hopefully in the future we can eliminate that question from the minds of families across the Air Force.

Key spouses are volunteers interviewed and appointed by squadron commanders to act as an extension of squadron leadership to the families in that squadron. These volunteers complete an initial training course with Airmen and Family Readiness Center and then complete continuing education hours annually. Key spouses are people driven to improve the quality of life of the military family.

This program is a commander’s program, each command may implement the program differently but ultimately the involvement of squadron leadership is key to the success of the program. This program has the capability of changing lives simply by having the information flow between families and leadership.

When the family is cared for, they have information and feel connected, then the military member can go to work and complete the mission effectively. When military members are having family related issues, their work per-

formance and productivity may decrease and their days out of work may increase. This is why utilizing key spouses can be a vital component of squadron health. Taking care of families is the mission of the key spouses and the key spouse program and it all comes full circle.

Each unit tweaks and molds their program differently and uniquely and this is the beauty of the program. It’s not a program that can be implemented in one format

Key spouses are trained to look for the uncommon in an attempt to identify families potentially in need. with the expectation of the same result. Every squadron presents different tasks, deployments, shifts, stressors and styles and the program must meet the squadron on the continued page 19 | CONNECTED

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Denver Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay visited Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, June 7, 2019, to learn about the base and show his support for men and women in the armed forces.

Lindsay visited the base fitness center and the dining facility to meet with fans and talk about his path to the NFL. “Hard work is something you can’t run from,” he said. “You work hard or you don’t. Everybody wants something, but you will never get to something if you aren’t willing to work for it. It could take time — days, weeks, months or even years, but if you have the drive, it will almost certainly pay off. You just have to be patient.”

Lindsay also visited the 2nd, 4th and 22nd Space Operations Squadrons and the 50th Security Forces Squadron to learn how Team Schriever masters space and cyberspace operations.

“I’m grateful for our troops,” Lindsay said. “We would not have this beautiful country without them, and I definitely wouldn’t be able to play football. It means a lot for me to come out here, you guys put your life on the line for people like me, and I’m thankful.”

During his visit, Lindsay had the rare opportunity to send a command to a satellite, communicate with deployed assets via a military satellite communication system and train with Security Forces in a crisis response simulator.

Master Sgt. Robert Shaw, 2nd Space Operations Squadron Global Positioning System sustainment superintendent, was instrumental in making this visit happen.

“I’ve known him for more than 12 years, since I coached his football team when he was younger,” Shaw said. “Phil has always been supportive of the military. He’s always been interested in the uniform we wear and what it means. He’s always been supportive of the men and women who serve.”

Shaw also said Lindsay has consistently had a good work ethic.

“He’s always had the heart and the motivation,” Shaw said. “He’s the kind of guy who will do whatever it takes to win.” continued page 5 | GRATEFUL

“One of the great things about being a kid is having big dreams,” he said. “No one says you can’t achieve your goals. It’s important to keep those dreams, no matter how big they are, this is how I got to where I am.”

Shaw said Lindsay learned the importance of being a part of a team at a young age.

“One time when he was younger, he was complaining about his offensive line not blocking well enough,” Shaw said. “So, his dad told him he had to play on the line. Let’s just say he learned real fast no one member of a team is more important than another.”

Lindsay said he hopes to be remembered as more than an athlete.

“It means a lot for me to come out here, you guys put your life on the line for people like me, and

I’m thankful.”

He also said he is hosting a football camp for kids in July.

“Airmen on base would constantly call to ask us if we had discounts for renting multiple items so we came up with this idea to facilitate the acquisition of equipment people need to throw their parties,” Yim said.

Airmen will be able to choose from multiple pack options depending on the size of the event.

“There will be three sizes of party packs,” Howard said. “They will come standard with things like tables, chairs, corn hole, a 10by-10 foot pop-up tent and football, soccer ball, frisbees, etc.

“Both the medium and large will come with a grill and the large party pack will come with a bounce house as well,” he added. “However, this is the standard set as these party packs are customizable which means that you can add or subtract things to your party pack to make it perfect for what you need. Custom items will depend on availability.”

The party packs have a standard price, but are customizable for an additional price.

50TH SFS INVESTIGATIONS FLIGHT

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Security Forces Squadron investigation flight embodies Air Force leadership’s “Year of the Defender” campaign by keeping every unit on Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, safe and secure.

The flight conducts internal security, crucial to the base’s ability to protect mission success and advance its objectives and is responsible for handling situations involving criminal, fraud, counterintelligence and internal security concerns.

According to John Camacho, 50th SFS noncommissioned officer in charge investigations, their flight also fulfill the intelligence role for the squadron.

“The intelligence part of our mission is important,” Camacho said. “If we do not provide precise intelligence to the end-user, it will have a significant effect on the thousands of personnel on the base and especially the assets we have here.”

Kyle Maldonado, 50th SFS investigator, said investigations have an elevated need for the professionalism and approachability required by all defenders and it is gauged from the beginning in the hiring process.

“As an investigator you need the capability to talk to anyone, in some cases you have to brief leadership. You can’t be rigid in any of these engagements, maintaining a professional candor with individuals regardless of their status,” Maldonado said.

Another requirement is to attend the Military Police Investigators Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

“The course is about two months in length,” Camacho said. “The course is different each week. The scope of knowledge within the course ranges from law to information technology.”

50th SFS investigations, through their diligence in both aspects of their mission successfully and innovatively execute today’s operations.

“To me one of the most rewarding parts of my job is getting to say let’s hold off on the conclusions and investigate this a little more and find out what’s really going on.”

“We are well versed in recognizing deviations in regards to security,” Maldonado said. “We are constantly striving to improve our processes and bolster security to ensure we remain the master of space.”

Camacho said the most rewarding part of being in 50th SFS investigations is his role in providing investigation information to commanders.

“We have to hold our people accountable,” he said.

“Sometimes people are fast to jump to conclusions. To me one of the most rewarding parts of my job is getting to say let’s hold off on the conclusions and investigate this a little more and find out what’s really going on.”

Camacho emphasized the importance of Air Force leadership recognizing defenders.

“I think it puts a spotlight on security forces members, letting us know from top to bottom we are seen and heard,” said Camacho, 50th SFS. “Sometimes our gate guards may feel undervalued, when in fact it is one of the most important roles a defender can fulfill. The initiative also lets those not as informed on what we do learn there are a lot more moving parts to security forces than what they may see.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Operations Group hosted the 14th annual Maj. Gen. Jimmey R. Morrell awards banquet at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, May 23.

The banquet was held in honor of Morrell, a former 2nd Space Wing commander at Falcon (now Schriever) AFB from 1988 to 1990, and recognizes any military or civil service employee assigned to the 50th OG epitomizing the qualities Morrell displayed during his career of vision, commitment to excellence, the highest possible standards and expectations, a ceaseless drive to develop and mentor future leaders, and the unwavering courage needed to shape the future.

The winners for each category are as follows: Airman Category — Senior Airman Adrianna Barelas — 4th Space Operations Squadron Noncommissioned Officer Category — Tech. Sgt. Sarah Chapman — 2nd Space Operations Squadron

Senior Noncommissioned Officer Category — Master Sgt. Stephanie Kau — 1st Space Operations Squadron Company Grade Officer Category — Capt. Joshua Harnisch — 2nd SOPS Civilian Category — Daniel Devargas — 2nd SOPS The Morrell banquet and events planning responsibility rotates through squadrons within the 50th OG every year. This year, Master Sgt. Nicholas Banks, 1st Space Operations Squadron mission assurance superintendent and Master Sgt. Vicente Garren, 4th Space Operations Squadron mobile operations flight chief, led the event planning that began in February.

Barelas who won the airman category said she felt shocked and honored at the same time because she works with amazing Airmen every day.

Shopping Exchange pays off

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Every time Airmen, retirees and military families shop at the Army and Air Force Exchange at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, they help make their community stronger.

In 2018, Schriever AFB shoppers generated $134,561.04 for vital on-installation community programs, supporting quality-of-life, including outdoor recreation, Child Development Center, School Age Care and the fitness center.

One hundred percent of Exchange earnings are invested in the military community, with 60 percent going to dividends supporting quality-of-life programs and the remaining 40 percent used to improve the experience in stores and online.

During the last 10 years, Exchange shoppers have contributed $2.5 billion to support these programs, strengthening the services’ recruiting, retention and readiness efforts.

“All of the events are free of charge and have great food and entertainment,” she added. “Our MWR program also provides funding for refreshments at changes of command and commanders’ calls, gift certificates for quarterly and annual wing award winners and provides the cost of the meal for the annual award winners at the annual banquet.”

Casserly said between 2017 and 2018, there was a more

than $13,000 increase in funds.

Additionally in 2018, a $223 million dividend was generated in part by veterans, who were welcomed home with a lifelong online military exchange shopping benefit introduced on Veterans Day 2017.

Banks said even though the event was a large undertaking, the support of Col. Laurel Walsh, 50th OG commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Steven Whitworth, 50th OG superintendent, made it all possible.

“They supported us through everything providing the guidance and vision, letting us run with our ideas and trusting that we were going to put on a great golf tournament and banquet, made everything much easier,” Banks said.

Approximately 230 guests attended the banquet with Col. Jack Fischer, 50th Space Wing vice commander as guest speaker for this year’s event.

“Our committee thought the event went very well,” he said. “The event oversold and our biggest concern, the day of, was having enough food for everyone. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Col. Jack Fischer, 50th Space Wing vice commander’s presentation. This was confirmed by the line of Airmen who stayed after the event to get his autograph.”

Fischer shared a video detailing his time leading up to and at the International Space Station, giving the crowd an inside perspective on the life of an astronaut, covering what kind of scientific experiments they conduct at the space station, and some of the methods used for things like exercising, grooming, eating, etc. finally tying it to the 50th OG and 50th SW’s missions.

“We actually had to cut off ticket sales the morning of the event, and bring in chairs for attendees to sit in after we ran out of table space, it was definitely a packed house,” Banks said.

Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center is proud to name a new partner: Mission Medical Center. The Long-established faith-based non-profit organization provides no-cost medical care to the uninsured and underinsured in areas of primary care, dental care, behavioral health, prescription medication, optometry – to include free eyeglasses - and more. “Most people assume that veterans have medical insurance, but that’s not true for all veterans, and certainly not true for their families,” said Barb Cronin, executive director. “Through our partnership with Mt. Carmel, we conduct medical screenings in a private atmosphere to determine need and eligibility for care. Once screenings are complete and a need for care is established, actual care is provided at Mission Medical’s clinic.” The Mission Medical team provides free healthcare to those in need and welcomes all members of the community for screenings in an effort to address body, mind and spirit. “We’re excited to support the veteran community through our partnership at Mt. Carmel,” said Barb. “We’re also very proud of the veterans on our staff -- some with combat experience and even combat medical experience.” Mission Medical is at Mt. SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Air Force’s core values are important for every Airman to live by, practicing service before self can be life changing which is why Airmen are encouraged to participate and engage in communities both home and abroad.

Capt. Lauren Hughes, 50th Space Wing chaplain, said being engaged and participating in mission trips are a great opportunity for Airmen.

“It’s a chance to serve and build faith, as well as a chance to help with specific needs such as providing clothes, building a home or feeding the hungry,” she said. “Anyone can go too, it’s not for any specific religion but for those who just have the heart to help.”

Maj. Timothy Sessions, 21st Space Wing deputy wing chaplain, said the 21st SW is going on its first mission trip outside of the United States and he is happy to partner with the 50th SW and have a Schriever Airman come on the trip.

“If you want to broaden your view of the world, build upon your service and feel like contributing to something larger than yourself, opportunities such as this are a great catalyst to help make those things happen,” he said.

Sessions also said he hopes more opportunities come available.

“Everyone learns their own lessons — you take away what you put into it,” he said. “Many times, people come back from trips like this and start looking for more, whether that be contributing on base or in the local community.”

Senior Airman William Nash, 50th Comptroller Squadron finance technician, said this is his first mission trip and is headed to Jamaica on an eight day mission trip with the 21st Space Wing chaplain’s office at the end of July.

“On this upcoming mission trip, we’re going to construct a church, provide hospital assistance, participate in activities with the local children and host a bible study,” Nash said. “I look forward to helping those in need. I’m also excited for the personal growth and improvement that may come out of it — it’s something bigger than myself.”

Nash said Airmen are required to raise funds to support trip costs and Airmen can go in permissive leave status if approved by leadership.

Hughes said it is important to recognize the opportunities we have in the United States.

“We’re very privileged to be living in the United States of America and it is a great honor to wear this uniform,” Hughes said. “So when we practice what this uniform represents, when we practice service before self, it creates a really humbling and rewarding feeling.”

She also said mission trips and volunteer opportunities can be rewarding.

“When you help a home get placed together with your hands, seeing the smiles on hungry children’s faces when you provide food to them, it’s one of those things which really put our first world problems into perspective,” Hughes said. “Maybe running out of gas isn’t as bad as it seems.”

Sessions said an opportunity like this is rare.

“I’m excited for the Airmen going, this is an awesome opportunity,” Session said. “Mission trips are a great way to reach out and help those in need. I’d encourage Airmen to get involved in the future, these trips can be life changing, and they can change your perspective on a lot.”

Hughes said practicing service before self is something every Airman should be doing.

“This uniform gives us great opportunities to be exposed to things that maybe we would have never been exposed to,” Hughes said. “Yes you’re able to serve, but you’re also able to develop lifelong relationships. Nothing brings people closer together than serving someone else and I’m very proud of the Airmen who go out of their way to do something bigger than themselves.”

MDA celebrates change of responsibility

FORT BELVOIR, Virginia — U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Jon A. Hill assumed responsibility of the Missile Defense Agency from U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Samuel A. Greaves during a change of responsibility ceremony conducted May 31.

The Honorable Michael D. Griffin, Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, presided over the ceremony held in the Thurmond Auditorium at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

Greaves had led MDA since June 16, 2017 and will retire from active duty at the end of June 2019 following 37 years in uniform.

“It has been a privilege and honor to lead the men and women of the Missile Defense Agency in developing effective and proven missile defenses for the protection of our homeland and our deployed forces, allies and partners,” Greaves said. “Their devotion to excellence to meet the objectives of the MDA mission is critical to the safety of our nation.”

Vice Adm. Hill has served as MDA’s deputy director since November 2016. As director, he will advise the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering on ballistic missile defense policy, requirements, priorities, systems, resources and programs and lead MDA’s more than 8,000 military, civilian and contract employees working in locations across 14 time zones.

“I look forward to continuing to serve with the men and women of this agency to meet the critical mission of developing a BMDS that defends our nation, deployed forces and its allies,” Hill said. “We will continue to pursue excellence in all we do to support the warfighter and prove the power of missile defense through testing.”

ON BASE Community College of the Air Force Graduation

The Community College of the Air Force graduation is scheduled for June 18 at 9 a.m. in the Building 210 courtyard. There will be a reception in the Building 210 atrium following the ceremony.

Running trail repairs

The running trail, located north of the fitness center, is under repair until June 28. The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron is conducting the repairs due to damage caused by erosion. During these repairs, portions of the running trail will be closed for safety purposes. Closed areas will be identified with cones and signs. We ask all users comply with closures to help ensure personal safety. Questions can be directed to Mike Rosseau at 719-567-5092.

Schriever Choir: Orbital Harmony Auditions

The Schriever Air Force Base Choir performance group, Orbital Harmony, will conduct auditions to fill vacant spots for the Spring and Summer 2019 performance season. All positions are currently open (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass). Any experience level is welcome. Auditions will be conducted by appointment in the Building 210 Chapel Office.

Participation in the Schriever AFB Choir can be used toward qualification for a volunteer ribbon.
