SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The U.S. Air Force has been upholding a tradition of camaraderie and discipline for 73 years. It was this sense of pride and purpose that inspired 1st Lt. Nathaniel Shannon, Space Delta 6 — Cyberspace Operations, 61st Cyberspace Squadron defensive cyber operations supervisor, to begin his Air Force career.

“I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself, and honor those who served before me,” said Shannon. “I also wanted to gain a caliber of discipline that I felt only the military can provide.”

Shannon was one of the few students from his home town of Midland Park, New Jersey, to apply to a service academy, and the first of his immediate family to join the military. After successfully obtaining his degree in physics, he realized he wanted a little bit more.

Although he originally joined with the idea of becoming a pilot, Shannon discovered a new passion in cyberspace.

“I felt that joining the U.S. Space Force was the closest I would get to being at the forefront of space as a national security enterprise, even if it is from the cyber perspective,” continued Shannon.

Shannon now leads a crew of cyber defense operators who monitor and protect the mission and weapon systems that make the U.S. Space Force tick. Both he and his team are the first line of defense against malicious actors trying to

infiltrate the Space Force in cyberspace.

“Ironically, when joining the Air Force I told myself, ‘I am going to be the opposite of my dad, who just sits at a desk in front of a computer all day’,” Shannon explained. “Now I do exactly

that. My eyes have been opened to an entirely unknown part of the world to me previously — cyberspace and cyber warfare.”

Despite multiple setbacks, Shannon never missed an opportunity to make the

most of his situation, and prides himself on his work ethic and determination.

“Lieutenant Shannon was my most highly stratified senior watch officer,” praised U.S. Space Force Capt. Joseph Folse, 61st CYS operations officer. “Even when presented with the toughest of challenges and time-constrained environments, Lieutenant Shannon is able to come up with unique solutions that meet the need of the U.S. Space Force, and most importantly, the Guardians he supervises.”

U.S. Space Force Maj. Eve O’Connor, 61st CYS director of operations, explained that Shannon is known as a skilled cyber operator, and is always looked to for input on their biggest technical and operational challenges.

“Lieutenant Shannon is a very thoughtful leader,” O’Connor described. “When interacting with him, you can tell that he is very observant, attentive and considerate. He is always the first to volunteer for any challenge, task or mission. He thinks strategically about what is needed not only from his leadership, but importantly, from his subordinates as well.”

Shannon went on to explain that although he was the first in his immediate family to join, he has hopes that his hard work and success will inspire the next generation.

“I am very proud to be a part of building an entirely new armed service,” explained Shannon. “I like to think that I am starting a legacy that my children will hopefully follow.”

CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In a few days, after a quarter century of commissioned service to our country, I will be laying down the authorities, rights, and privileges of what wearing the uniform of our military symbolizes.

Therefore, I come with a message of leave-taking and farewell, and to share a few final thoughts with you, my fellow Airmen. When I accepted my commission, I could not have imagined the things I would do in the Air Force, the places I would go, the people I would meet, and the relationships I would forge in the process.

If there is anything worth commenting on about my career, it is the friends I have made which I will continue to cherish long after I retire. William Butler Yeats’ words echo my thoughts in this regard, “Think where man’s glory most begins and ends, and I say my glory was I had such friends.”

Not only did I make lasting friendships that sustained me in my service, but I more importantly had family that supported me every step of the way. My parents wrote weekly letters while I attended the Air Force Academy and always visited me and my family wherever I was stationed.

My wonderful wife, Leslie, who was, and still is, my biggest

cheerleader, was always ready to provide support ranging from a listening ear, logistical planning for cross country moves, and making sure things were always taken care of at home while I was away. And my two wonderful daughters.

They have had to endure leaving friends, schools (sometimes once the school year had already started), and have never lived close to grandparents. Regardless of their disappointments, they have continued to support me and my service. I definitely

Peterson, Schriever Airmen connect through video game club

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Over the last year of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been challenging for Airmen and Guardians to connect with their peers, but two Peterson-Schriever Garrison Airmen found a way to overcome and form bonds in a simple way: they formed a video game club.

“I'm a huge video gamer, so I haven't really been struggling too much with all the free time,” said Airman 1st Class Christian Anderson, 21st Communication Squadron cable and antenna technician. “But I figured that there'd be a lot of other people that are in a similar position, and maybe we could get people in contact with each other and get to know other Airmen on base.”

Anderson saw advertising around base encouraging Airmen and Guardians to establish or join clubs to connect with others as well as pass the time at home that COVID-19 restrictions created. However, there was no video game club listed, so he reached out to the person in charge of clubs, Staff Sgt. Andrew Tello, 21st Communications Squadron unit training and deployment manager. With Tello’s advice and assistance in promoting the club, Anderson started a server on an instant messaging and Voice over Internet Protocol service to connect video game-playing Airmen and Guardians. Currently, he co-leads the club with Senior Airman Brice Brewington, 50th Operations Support Squadron satellite communications operator, who is stationed at Schriever AFB. The club has mostly been advertised to dormitory service members so far, but over 20 Airmen and Guardians have joined the club’s VoIP server, and plans exist to advertise the club across Front Range military communities.

“We’ve tried our best to seek out what games people

want to play or [organize] a tournament online,” said Anderson.

The framework for this gaming club, and many others on base, was spawned in late 2019, after a resilience event that encouraged Peterson AFB Airmen to build closer ties to one another with empathy, compassion and vulnerability. Tello assisted in bringing the programing to Peterson with support from violence prevention integrator Michel Cremeans. Tello had attended a similar event in his teens and he wanted to share what he’d learned with his fellow service members. One of the big takeaways from the resilience event was an impetus to “be the change” to make healthier, more interconnected workplaces and communities.

This led to the formation of a “Be the Change” group on base, which spawned the idea for clubs in turn.

“The purpose of the clubs is to connect all the members at Peterson and Schriever,” said Tello. “[That] includes any spouses, dependents, contractors, military, civilian and DoD [personnel], as long as they're at least 18 years old. Three goals we're looking for [are]: people to meet new people, to foster a sense of community, and we want to spend time doing what they already like to do.”

For Anderson and Brewington, that initiative means big things are on the horizon for their video game club.

“With COVID and work from home, it’s difficult to try and plan or advertise anything… but we’ve been working on remodeling part of the bowling alley to become a gaming center,” said Anderson. “We haven’t come up with a cool name yet, but we wanted to have maybe 10 to 12 PCs for local tournaments.”

In order to help pass the time at home mandated by COVID-19 restrictions, Airman 1st Class Christian Anderson, 21st Communication Squadron cable and antenna technician and Senior Airman Brice Brewington, 50th Operations Support Squadron satellite communications operator, formed a video game club to connect Peterson and Schriever service members. PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Community College of the Air Force concept evolved in the early 1970s as means for Airmen to gain recognition for their U.S. Air Force training.

Further education provides Airmen an opportunity to be better at their jobs within the Air Force and to make them more competitive once they leave the military service.

The CCAF Graduation Ceremony is a bi-annual event that recognizes enlisted members of Peterson-Schriever Garrison, who have completed the requirements for an Associate of Applied Science Degree through the CCAF. This event was a combined Spring/Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 event due to COVID-19 restrictions.

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Brooke Peckham, 50th Force Support Squadron career development technician at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, is responsible for providing expert career guidance regarding retention, enlisted promotion, retirement and separation counseling to more than 2,300 military personnel. Her duties are critical to ensuring military personnel entitlements and benefits are accurately updated and reflected in their personnel records which prevents entries that could negatively impact pay or career progression. Over the last six months, Peckham generated 121 re-enlistment contracts for Airmen transferring into the U.S. Space Force.

In order to successfully meet those challenges, we must “…carry forward steadily, surely, and without complaint the burdens of a prolonged and complex struggle-with liberty at stake.”

The pace you set in these interesting and challenging times will determine the defense of our way of life against those opposed to it. You already have many of the tools you need to set that pace.

First you must have persistence.

Regardless of external factors to the contrary, we must press toward our goal of a strong national defense. There have been many times in my career when I wanted to quit, but it was my fellow Airmen that kept me going. I looked to my right. I looked to my left. I was shoulder to shoulder with others who persisted in doing what they had to do, contributing to national defense.

I say my glory was I had such friends.”

Persistence is what it is going to take to preserve us as a nation. The threat may be a natural one like we see today.

It may be manmade, machines of war the likes of which are on the fringes of our imagination. Regardless, we must persist if we are to survive and thrive.

You must also have the right attitude.

We can easily spiral into negativity. I know personally how debilitating a negative attitude can be, how paralyzing it is to be in its grip. I have been impacted by thinking “there is no way I can do this.”

But it has been my family, my friends, and my fellow Airmen that have shown me that with their help, I can. What I ask you to do is to think, “I can do this!”

Or if you are not feeling particularly strong at the moment, “We can do this!”

Sometimes, you will just have to think you are “nine feet tall and could go bear hunting with a switch.”

You will face challenges as individu-

als, as a service, and as a nation we can scarcely imagine. As you pursue peace and the preservation of our way of life, our challengers will continually try to dissuade us. But you cannot let them.

You may suffer temporary setbacks, but you must have an attitude that we will ultimately prevail, regardless of their actions. This is the kind of attitude you must adopt, if you have not already.

You also must be women and men of good character. You have to be honest with yourselves and with others. You have to be willing to put others’ needs before your own needs and often your desires.

You have to be kind to those you work with and work for — those you lead and those by whom you are led. People will not remember all the things you accomplished while you were in uniform but they will remember when you were kind to them.

You must be willing to sacrifice your time, your resources, and your energy for others as well as ultimately, the mission. You may be called upon to sacrifice more of those things, but never to sacrifice your character.

Character is what binds us all together to accomplish the mission we have been given, whether on the ground, in the air, or circling in orbits above the globe.

Finally, you must strive for excellence. Perfection is unattainable. “Good enough” does not win in the long-run.

Excellence in all you do is what you must continually strive for. It is what will provide stability during turbulent times.

It will not make you second guess if you have been “found wanting” and unable to proceed. It will never leave you with a sense of “I should have…” or “I could have…” It is the kind of effort that satisfies in the end. It also is the effort that wins. You may not always attain it, but you must strive for excellence and demand others around you to do the same.

My desire for myself, as I pass the baton, is that I will prove not less virtuous and useful as a Citizen, than I did as an Airman. My desire for you is that you will set the pace and continue to strive for peace as you defend our country.

I will be watching intently from the stadium. It has been my honor to serve with you. I wish you and your families nothing but the full blessings of liberty that our great country affords in our Constitution.

CDOT construction: 1-25 and CO 115 ramp resurfacing

This project will resurface interchange ramps in the Colorado Springs area, upgrade guardrail systems and place new pavement markings. Several locations will receive new asphalt curb, slope and ditch paving. Overnight ramp closures at NORAD/O'Connell (EXIT 43 A/B). With anticipated completion in August, this project will improve safety with smoother highway transitions and new guardrail. Planned closures are overnight from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and signed detour routes will be provided. All ramps will be open during the day. Some noise is expected overnight from construction equipment and asphalt milling operations. All work and ramp closures are weather-dependent.

Idris Goodwin brings creativity, passion and enthusiasm to his role as director of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College.

He joined the organization in February 2020, just before the pandemic hit the United States, but has viewed the ongoing challenges as unique opportunities for growth and change that will ultimately lead to a brighter future, not only for the FAC but also the community. Goodwin will discuss his experience as a Black man from Detroit leading in a predominantly white industry, as well as his overall vision for the FAC.
