SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Operations Support Squadron is acquiring augmented reality headsets for training its students at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado. The OSS plans to use AR to show warfighters the scale of different orbits, how fast satellite anomalies can take place in real time, and explore the different mechanisms of satellites. “A lot of what space operators do is push buttons, but being able to see what’s really happening and the effects of those buttons being pushed is huge,” said Airman 1st Class Jeremy Block, 4th Space Operations Squadron satellite vehicle expert. “Now that space is getting more contested and competitive, we want to be able to show our students a simulation of what it might look like.” Popular examples of AR include Pokémon Go and Snapchat filters. However, the 50th OSS will use AR headsets to create a more immersive and realistic experience. “Augmented reality is taking what we see in front of us and getting more information out of it,” Block said. “It’s looking through a digital lens and getting more from the landscape” The objective to train operators with AR started when Block came up with the idea to implement virtual reality training. This would’ve required the OSS to purchase computer towers as well as VR headsets. However, after performing a cost analysis, the unit decided to go with AR headsets. “We don’t know what we are capable of unless we test or challenge ourselves,” said Master Sgt. Micky Sederburg, 50th OSS superintendent. “There [are] numerous perspectives in our forces that are untapped and we need to encourage everyone of all ranks to keep innovating and taking full advantage of the programs and initiatives that allow these opportunities to grow our missions. Innovation is exciting and provides an opportunity for ownership of the Airmen’s’ respective missions which increases motivation and performance.” The 50th OSS is responsible for transforming Schriever’s Airmen into space warfighters, they do this by sending all new Airmen in space career fields through an extensive course that prepares Airmen to work in units such as the 4th and 2nd SOPS. “An operator can see where their assets are and what a threat may look like in that location [in space],” Block said. “We’re warfighters, we have to know what we’re doing, what the threats are, where they
are, what [satellites and orbits] look like, and that’s what [using AR] is going to accomplish.” The goal is for the headsets to provide kinesthetic learners with a more comprehensive understanding of the course as opposed to the typical visual, audio, reading and writing curriculum. “This is going to help us operate in a contested environment,” Block said. “It’s going to show people how fast things can happen and it’s going to make [class] more realistic.” Although the OSS already has 3D modeling software that emulates a similar scene, they hope the hands on interaction helps Airmen better understand the curriculum. “It’s going to be used in our classrooms to help [students] visualize orbits around the Earth as well as to see the constellations for each of our satellite programs,” he said. “That physical application is huge when learning about these systems.”
“It’s looking through a digital lens and getting more from the landscape.”
The unit will bring in six AR headsets for Airmen to use in training. They hope to use them early on in the course when teaching the fundamentals of different orbit types. “As technology progresses and we move forward, everything is changing,” said 1st Lt. Curtis Lingenfelter, 50th OSS space ground link system satellite vehicle operator staff instructor. “If we look at the technology we have today versus 10 years ago, it’s completely different. The way we can visualize [our satellites] down here will help us prepare for whatever threats may come tomorrow.” The Squadron will use a program called “Solar,” created by Charles River Analytics. The program allows Airmen to create an operational picture of space which lets them visualize the true scale of different satellite orbits compared to the Earth. Solar is coded in Unity, a development platform which allows the OSS to alter the software to fit their training requirements more efficiently. “We’re constantly evolving and we’re constantly pushing the boundaries of what we already have,” Lingenfelter said. “And that’s the biggest part of how we’re going to be able to move forward as a Space Force.”

On integrity
By Col. Mike Peeler 436th Operations Group commander
D
OVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. — The Air Force places integrity first because it is, without question, the most important of our core values. In its purest form, personal integrity is doing the right thing, because it is the right thing to do. Integrity serves as our moral compass, the basis for the trust imperative to military service. Without this foundational principle, nothing else we do really matters. There is, however, another aspect of integrity worthy of our attention. Consider the nearly 10,800-foot span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Since 1951, this bridge has stood up against intense heat, strong winds, driving rain and heavy snow to allow millions of pounds of commerce to cross the Delaware River every day. It continues to stand, because the individual components that make up the bridge support each other to provide strength. Each component is integral to the overall design and function; each can be relied upon. Working together, the components provide the continued page 4 | LEADERSHIP

structural integrity necessary for the bridge to operate. Structural integrity is the ability of an item to hold together under a load, including its own weight, without breaking or deforming. A suspension bridge, such as the Delaware Memorial Bridge, includes anchorages, piers, towers and suspenders. Each component of the bridge is critical to its success. It takes all of the parts, acting as a whole, for the bridge to stand. Not only must they work together to maintain its form, but they must also be strong enough to stand up to the weight of their mission. But, structural integrity is more than just a case for good design; maintaining the integrity of a structure
takes effort. Engineers conduct periodic inspections of individual components, and crews provide maintenance to ensure reliable performance. If any part of the bridge were to become weak and fail, the entire structure would collapse. Our military was designed with this sense of structural integrity in mind. Our force is made up of hundreds of components, each as important as the next. These force components act upon each other in ways that not only keep us whole but also enable us to execute our mission. Sound structural integrity of our force is imperative if we are to hold together under a heavy load. If any one of our critical components falter, we will not only fail in our mission but crumble under our own weight. These two aspects of integrity, personal and structural, work in concert
with one another. Without personal integrity, you cannot be relied upon, weakening the overall structure of our force. Without structural integrity, you lack the protection to do the right thing in the face of adversity. Today, our country faces social and political forces that, if left unchecked, have the potential to break down our force. It is therefore incumbent upon us, the individual components, to maintain not only our personal integrity, but also the structural integrity required to remain whole and execute our mission. This may require upgrades and improvements, preventative maintenance and self-reflection. At the very least, it will require us to support one another in the face of adversity and to keep our military structure strong and reliable for years to come.

of an item to hold together under a load, including its own weight, without breaking or deforming.”

50th CPTS set to launch CSP By Marcus Hill 50th Space Wing Public Affairs
SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — To help Airmen with financial matters, the 50th Comptroller Squadron is set to launch the Air Force Comptroller Services Portal July 13 at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado. Previously, Airmen entered the finance office with account issues. Now the portal, an online platform, will fulfill most common issues and allow Airmen to submit requests for assistance with items like military, civilian and travel pay, without having to leave home.
“Instead of walking in, the member has
the ability to do everything online.” Second Lt. Laura Pulliam, 50th CPTS financial operations commander, said CSP will provide convenience for Airmen. “Instead of walking in, the member has the ability to do everything online,” Pulliam said. “Right now, we have a customer service dot org [email] where people can submit questions, inquiries or attach documents. The goal of CSP is to take that away so we don’t have to work around an email and the member wouldn’t necessarily need to come in.” Airmen do not need VPN to access CSP, but do require their Common Access Card, if they’re using a personal computer. Tech. Sgt. Jon Carlos Candelario, 50th CPTS flight financial operations chief, said submitting a request won’t vary much from the old method, but CSP saves them time since they aren’t required to come in to submit a request. “[Airmen] identify what the problem is via the portal and we’ll do our homework on our side,” Candelario said. “[We’ll] upload any required documentation we need to complete for the customer and then we take appropriate action.”

The CSP will allow Airmen to submit requests such as military, civilian and travel pay through an online process.
Pulliam added Airmen don’t have to worry about others accessing their information from the site. “It’s safe for [Airmen] to enter personally identifiable information,” she said. “That’s for the ease of the member concerned. It’s safe if they want to put a confidential document on there.” Candelario and Pulliam said the portal allows Airmen in 50th CPTS to better track submissions through the portal to ensure Airmen handle request. “We take that documentation, make sure it gets uploaded, notify the customer it was processed and close it

out after it was successfully processed,” Candelario said. There’s transparency throughout the process, and it’s a good way for us to maintain contact with the customer.” The CSP also allows Airmen to have the ability to provide additional transparency. “The customer can see the status of their request in their profile of the inquiry they sent,” Pulliam said. “They can see behind-the-scenes what’s happening.” For additional information about the CSP, contact 719-567-2010.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed, freeing the 13 Colonies of British rule and birthing the United States of America as it’s known today. Voting is what enables the citizens of the United States to elect their leaders and shape the policies, which govern the land. “A lot of people have died to give us the opportunity to vote,” said Mel Castille, 50th Force Support Squadron Airmen and Family Readiness Center personal and work life specialist and alternate installation voting assistance officer. “It’s a right every American has earned; it’s our constitutional duty to vote.” Serving in the armed forces can complicate the voting process as many have never voted, let alone voted away from home. “[For those] individuals [who] aren’t registered, [or may not] know if they’re registered or [haven’t] received their absentee ballots,” said Kendra Humphrey, 50th FSS AFRC installation voting assistance officer. “We’re here to make sure all Airmen have the ability to vote.” At all AFRCs in the Air Force, Airmen can fill out a federal postcard application. This application will register an Airman to vote in the location of their permanent residence and request an absentee ballot for the voter. The AFRC can help Airmen fill out the form and from there, mail it out for free. Fortunately, for Airmen at Schriever, they don’t have to go to the AFRC to receive assistance.
“Almost every squadron on base has unit voting assistance officers,” Humphrey said. “Depending on the size of the squadron, units will have one-to-eight UVAOs who [are] trained under the federal voting assistance program to help guide members through the process.” Unit voting assistance officers are appointed by squadron commanders and are capable of performing the same duties as the IVAO.
“A lot of people have died to give us
the opportunity to vote.” Airmen can also use the Federal Voting Assistance Program to guide them through the registration process. Absentee ballots can be requested through the FVAP, but the deadline for the 2020 election is Aug. 1. The FVAP also lists when elections are for each state and provides a countdown to the general election. If an Airman is deploying, they can still vote. However, they must contact the AFRC before deploying and request an absentee ballot be sent to the location to which they’re deploying. Conversely, Airmen can request a digital absentee ballot to be sent as well. “When people don’t vote, those numbers add up, and it could make a significant shift in the election [results],” Humphrey said. To learn more, contact Humphrey or Castille at 719-567-3920.

50th MSG changes command comptroller squadron commander, and is most recently coming from the Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles AFB, California, where she served as the director of financial management and comptroller.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Mission Support Group changed command July 7, 2020, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado. Col. Ericka Farmer-Hill took command from outgoing commander, Col. Brian Kehl. The ceremony’s presiding official was Col. James Smith, 50th Space Wing commander. The group has more than 800 personnel who provide security, civil engineering, fire protection, environmental management, manpower, personnel, logistics, contracting, base services and housing support for Schriever AFB. “Today we bid farewell to a tremendous commander, a leader who has faithfully led the mission support group for the last three years,” Smith said. “We often refer to the mission support group as a secondary function, but for us at Schriever, doing so would be a mistake. If space operations are the driving force behind our American way of life and way of war, it is not hyperbole to say the MSG is the driving force behind space operations.” During Kehl’s tenure as commander, the 50th MSG earned the Space Force’s number one military construction project for a combined space operations facility, which cost $148 million and houses more than 500 space warfighters. The group also received approval for a $23 million, 300% expansion of the base fitness center, which

will allow more equipment and a higher capacity. Additionally, they secured $2.3 million for the first installation youth center and stood-up the first education and training facility on base. “To the men and women of the 50th Mission Support group, the successes of this group over the last several years [are]
directly attributable to your hard work, dedication and sacrifices,” Kehl said. Kehl is headed to Peterson AFB, Colorado, where he will serve as the United States Space Force Financial Management and Comptroller Deputy. Before taking command of the 50th MSG, Farmer-Hill was a two-time
“The amazing thing about the Air Force is that no one individual is irreplaceable,” Smith said addressing Farmer-Hill. “Colonel Farmer-Hill is well prepared to lead this mission support group. I have no doubt you will carry on your killer track record and excel in this new role. I charge you to innovate, to build strong partnerships and always, always take care of your Airmen and their families.” Farmer-Hill will take on four squadrons under her group command: the 50th Civil Engineer Squadron, 50th Contracting Squadron, 50th Force Support Squadron, 50th Security Force Squadron and the 50th Logistics Readiness Flight. “I am ready to listen,” she said. “I am ready to learn. I am ready to follow, and more importantly I am ready to lead. It’s an honor to be a part of a team of champions and it’s a great privilege to serve you,” Farmer-Hill said.
Governor Polis signs new legislation for military spouses By Airman 1st Class Amanda Lovelace 50th Space Wing Public Affairs
SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed the Colorado House Bill 20-1326, “Create Occupational Credential Portability Program Act,” into law at the Colorado State Capitol Building in Denver June 25, 2020. This legislation allows military spouses with an active occupational license in good standing, who are relocating to Colorado as part of an active duty military assignment, to receive temporary occupational licenses that last three years, at no cost to the military spouses. “Every time you PCS [permanent change of station], there are so many different things you’re worried about, such as where you’re going to live or where your children will go to school,” said Andrea Hernandez, Airman and Family Readiness Center flight chief. “If you have a career and you’re trying to get back into the work force, having the extra time to get your license makes it much less stressful and removes one more thing from your to-do list.”
Prior to this bill, spouses only had a one-year licensure exemption, so the new legislation allows military spouses more time to find a job in their career field. After their three-year temporary license has expired, military spouses can either renew their temporary license or apply for a Colorado original license. Aside from the new legislation, service members and their spouses have the opportunity to save money following permanent changes of station or address through the Department of Defense’s Licensure Reimbursement Program. The LRP, which went into effect May 17, 2019, allows military spouses to recoup up to $1,000 in reimbursement for re-licensure or recertification when they move to a different state. “As military spouses, we do so much in assistance of our service members,” said Colleen Rastellini, 50th Security Forces Squadron budget analyst. “We follow them, we support them when they’re home or away. We literally pick up our lives and our families’ lives and move from location to location. This expense is
something we have no control over. We have to pay for this if we want to continue working in our fields.” To qualify, the program requires the following from service members: • Airman is issued PCS/PCA orders • Movement of Airman’s dependent is authorized at government’s expense • Airman PCS/PCA to another state (includes Alaska, Hawaii, Washington D.C. and the U.S. territories) • Cost must be incurred and paid after the date of the Airman’s PCS/PCA orders are authenticated. (Airman must file a claim within 24 months of the date the orders are authenticated) Airmen can get information on how to apply to the DoD’s Licensure Reimbursement Program by contacting Melvin Castile, 50th Force Support Squadron community readiness specialist, at melvin.castile@ us.af.mil. For more information on the Colorado House Bill 20-1326, visit colorado.gov. Editor’s note: Marcus Hill contributed to this article.

The usage or consumption of any product containing hemp or CBD, which is derived from the cannabis (marijuana) plant, is strictly prohibited for uniformed service members. Hemp and CBD products can contain appreciable levels of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, known as THC, yet omit any reference to THC on the product label and/or list an inaccurate THC concentration. Service members cannot rely on packaging to determine if the amount of THC contained in the product could cause a positive urinalysis result.
