A

s a kid growing up, I always had a close relationship with my grandfather. As a member of what Tom Brokaw called, “The Greatest Generation,” my grandfather grew up in Wisconsin during the Great Depression and lost his father at a young age as a result of injuries he sustained in France during World War I. My grandfather shared with me his vivid memories of standing in bread lines for hours as his family struggled throughout his youth to make ends meet and put food on the table. With America’s entry into World War II, my grandfather, along with millions of other young Americans across the country joined the military to fight against tyranny and oppression so others might have a chance to live free.

He served with honor in the Pacific Campaign for almost four years and, upon his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, returned to Wisconsin to start a new career and create a family of his own. I always enjoyed hearing about his incredible experiences during the war as well as his stories about life.

One of the things he was most known for were his sayings.

He never missed an opportunity to share them regardless of who was around. One of his favorite sayings; has always stuck with me over the years and goes like this, “Life is like a jug, you get out of it what you put into it… nothing more and nothing less.”

As a kid, I knew this was some good advice and sounded wise and sage, but it wasn’t until I was much older that I fully

appreciated the wisdom of this saying. Over the years, it has become an important part of my daily cross-check.

As an Airman, a wingman, a father, a husband, a son and a brother, I ask myself how am I going to fill my jug today?

What experiences will I seek to create today that will add value to my life and to those I interact with to make today rewarding and fulfilling? With this perspective in mind, I find I tend to have much more meaningful and positive interactions with my fellow Airmen, my family and my friends and I feel much more connected to them with every interaction.

My grandfather passed away a few years ago at the age of 91 and left this world with a very full jug thanks to following his own advice.

Have fun, stay safe for Independence Day

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — While celebrating Independence Day, it is important to practice risk management.

Brad Truver, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron assistant chief of fire prevention at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, said knowing and being aware of laws surrounding the holiday in Colorado is important.

“In Colorado Springs, fireworks are illegal,” he said. “That even goes for sparklers.”

He said sparklers are one of the most dangerous fireworks due to accessibility and carelessness of the user.

Cook said to be aware of surroundings while grilling.

“Make sure your kids and pets stay away from grills,” he said. “Also check your hoses and make sure your grill is clean. This can help prevent grease fires and other potential dangers.”

While safely enjoying a grilled meal, it also is important to drink responsibly as every day in the United States, 29 people die in a motor vehicle crash which involves an alcohol impaired driver.

“When drinking, it’s important to know your limits,” Cook said. “Even if you have just one drink, I’d recommend you don’t drive, this also applies to boats. You could get arrested, hurt, kill someone or even yourself. It’s just not worth risking.”

Truver said it is easy to prevent drunk driving, especially with the accessibility of commercial transportation services.

“It’s important to always have a plan,” he said. “If you’re drinking, under no circumstances should you be driving. There are already enough distractions on the road, add alcohol to the equation and next thing you know you’re in a head on collision and someone is dead.”

Truver also added inclement weather can strike anytime.

“There were more than 500,000 lightning strikes in the state of Colorado last year,” he said. “So if you’re out celebrating the holiday and you hear a roar, get indoors. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from the storm so it never hurts to play it safe.”

Additionally, he said to be careful while smoking and be diligent about discarding cigarettes.

“The most structure fires in the United States on a single day are on July 4th,” Truver said.

“Be ready for anything that may happen, seven people die in the U.S. every day from a fire. By being prepared you are able to prevent dangerous situations like these.”

“About a quarter of 4th of July emergency room visits are because of sparklers,” Truver said. “Most people don’t know this but they burn at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. Even the simplest of fireworks can be dangerous and that is why you need to be very careful.”

Staff Sgt. Robert Cook, 50th Space Wing safety office noncommissioned officer in charge of occupational safety at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, said the penalties of using fireworks can be steep.

“Most fireworks are illegal in Colorado,” Cook said. “Not only could you serve up to 189 days or be fined $2,500 for setting off fireworks in Colorado Springs, but you could really hurt yourself if you unsafely use them.”

In addition to following the laws and regulations on fireworks, it is important to practice grilling safety.

“When it comes to grilling, I like to follow the three foot rule,” Cook said. “Keep your grill three feet away from your house, decks or any

Chaplain’s office shows night operators

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing Chaplain’s office hosted their annual night operations resiliency picnic at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, June 26.

The picnic is a way for the chaplain corps to give thanks to night shift workers who work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to keep the 50th SW mission of evolving space and cyberspace warfighting superiority through integrated and innovative operations, relevant and attainable.

“This event gives us an opportunity to tell our operators thank you for a job well done by giving them some time to come down and eat some good food,” said Capt. Lauren Hughes, 50th SW chaplain. “It’s something that people really look forward to experiencing — we do that for each group every year during the summer time, our night operators and defenders love it.”

“I (used to be) a crew member doing 24/7 operations for two years,” said 2nd Lt. David Williford, 4th Space Operations Squadron resource advisor. “That’s why I volunteered for this tonight because I know what it’s like to be on the operations floor at 3 a.m. when things are dull or crazy. Having a nice meal and some time to take a break is honestly really great and it helps keep morale up.”

This is the ninth chaplain’s resiliency BBQ for which Williford has volunteered.

“I love grilling so I figured I could give my talents to a good cause and make a good meal for these crew members,’’ Williford said.

The “price to pay” to enjoy a plate is answer the chaplain’s office question.

“For this picnic we are asking them for things they are grateful and thankful for and have a dialogue, it will be interesting to hear and to see what some of our Airman say, at least what’s on their minds today,” said Maj. Martin Adamson, 50th SW chaplain.

For Master Sgt. Carl White, 22nd Space Operations Squadron superintendent, these events help night operators connect with other Airmen who they may never see due to the varying schedules.

“When you’re on crew shift it’s very easy to be disconnected from the base population and from the rest of the world because you are working a different schedule than everybody else,” he said. “Days become weeks, weeks become months and you kind of get lost and suddenly you become an island unto yourself.”

White recognized sometimes taking time away from daily duties is necessary to experience that sense of belonging that makes a team more connected.

“Just like anybody else, you have problems, whether they’re family problems, financial problems or work problems, and because you are an island to yourself it becomes very easy to get into the sense that you are all alone, that no one is else going to help you or that you can’t reach out for a hand to help,” White said. “Events like this help people realize that they can stop for a second, take time out and recalibrate.”

The next chaplain’s office hosted picnic is scheduled for July 18 and will benefit Wing Staff Agency, 50th Comptroller Squadron and 21st Medical Squadron personnel.

50th SW CC holds first commander’s call

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Col. James Smith, 50th Space Wing commander, held his first commander’s call in the fitness center at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, June 26.

During the event, Smith introduced his family and laid out his expectations for his tenure as commander.

“I’m primarily interested as your commander in gaining your trust,” Smith said.

“In order to gain your trust, I think it helps for you to understand a little about mespecifically what drives me.”

Smith highlighted a quote that holds important meaning to him.

“Many people rely on our mission here at Schriever each and every day. My commitment to them is

we won’t be the reason they don’t come home.”

“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it,” he said. “So I’m going to describe to you why I do what I do.”

He began to list his “whys” starting with an introduction to his family, bringing his wife Kristy up to introduce herself.

“I said at the change of command, families support us,” Smith said. “The real reason I do what I do is to take care of family and to make sure they have a country and freedoms in which they can enjoy the things they enjoy.”

Smith encouraged Airmen in attendance to find something in their lives greater than their career and offered his support in whatever they find.

Next, he touched upon his second “why,” service, by sharing some of his personal reasons for service.

“Everyone here has a story,” Smith said. “Everyone can talk to the service they give.”

Smith recalled his graduation from the United States Air Force Academy where he was asked if he would ever be in harm’s

way, bringing in his third “why.”

“I don’t ever want to be the reason we lose someone in combat,” he said. “Many people rely on our mission here at Schriever each and every day. My commitment to them is we won’t be the reason they don’t come home.”

Technical Sgt. Tony Tirado, 4th Space Operations Squadron maintenance flight noncommissioned officer in charge who attended the call said he has never seen a commander care about family and he is likely cognizant of the impacts his future

decisions will make on his Airmen.

“As a father, it’s very comforting to see a commander place emphasis on family,” he said. “It shows at the end of the day, I can do my part in the mission with my head held high knowing the consideration was made.”

Finally he expressed his love for the space mission and his connection to it throughout his life to bring about his fourth “why,” the mission and teams who do the mission.

“I will do anything to support the mis-

sion at Schriever and to support each of you as individuals making up this team,” Smith said. “If there are things we can do to make your life, your mission or your job easier, that’s what we’re here for.”

He explained how he wants to incorporate his whys into his work with the wing and his excitement in meeting individuals in the coming days.

“I look forward to getting out and meeting all of you,” he said. “I look forward to learning your stories, your whys and making Schriever a better place.”

Practice safe driving on, off base

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— El Paso County is leading the state in impaired driver traffic related fatalities.

In May 2018, the El Paso County Sherriff’s Office arrested 360 DUI drivers, and at the same time this year, 604 impaired drivers were arrested; an increase by more than 200 impaired driving arrests.

Leaders at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, strive to ensure Airmen are safe on and off base.

Staff Sgt. Robert Cook, 50th SW Safety Office noncommissioned officer in charge of occupational safety, said impaired driving is anything that affects your decision making abilities, whether it be drugs or alcohol.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “Impaired drivers can’t accurately assess their own impairment — which is why no one should drive after using any impairing substances. If you feel different, you drive different.”

Cook said there are multiple outlets to reach out to if an Airmen finds him or herself in trouble.

“Call you first sergeant, your supervisor, a wingman, anyone who is available to you,” he said. “Call a cab, just don’t get in that car.”

Cook said before going out, have multiple plans for getting home safely.

“Always have multiple contingency plans, even have a plan for your plan,” he said.

Capt. Bradley Simon, 50th Space Wing Judge Advocate chief of adverse actions, said Airmen will likely be arrested, placed in confinement to sober up, have a court date, fined for a DUI and punished (i.e., fine, jail time, community service, etc) if caught under the influence.

“Since Schriever is a proprietary jurisdiction base, we must offer the county, city and state the right to prosecute the Airman,” he said. “Often, one of those agencies takes the case.”

According to the Colorado Revised Statutes, 2016 CRS, Title 42, “‘Driving while ability impaired’ means driving a motor vehicle or vehicle when a person has consumed alcohol or one or more drugs, or a combination of both alcohol and one or more drugs, that affects the person to the slightest degree so that the person is less able than the person ordinarily would have been, either mentally or physically, or both mentally and physically, to exercise clear judgment, sufficient physi-

cal control or due care in the safe operation of a vehicle.”

Per the uniform code of military justice, “‘drunk’ and ‘impaired’ mean any intoxication which is sufficient to impair the rational and full exercise of the metal or physical faculties.

Simon said not only are Airmen putting their own lives at stake, they are risking family and friend’s lives as well.

“There are too many resources available for Airmen,” she said. “Don’t risk it.”

El Paso County reminds all drivers in the county if you drive impaired, you will get caught.

Families enjoyed hiking, horseback riding, fishing, a group scavenger hunt, cookie baking, a painting activity, and experienced a Native American drum ceremony.

All meals were prepared and served by our behavioral health team and volunteers.
