T

wenty two years, it’s hard to believe how long I have been in the Air Force.

However, as I sit here exactly 50 days out from my retirement ceremony, I can’t help but reflect on a few thoughts I would love to share before I hang up my uniform for the last time.

I joined much like many of you, not knowing exactly what I was getting myself into, but wanting to do more with my life. I found the first few years I cared about doing a good job at work, but I wasn’t fully on board with the idea of the Air Force or truly “blued.”

“Bluing” happens at different times for different people so don’t think you’re not cut out for the Air Force if that sense of belonging doesn’t happen automatically. Your “ah-ha” moment will come and you will realize it’s bigger than a job, it’s a family and a life of service.

My “ah-ha” moment came the moment I was promoted to staff sergeant and became a supervisor. I quickly realized I was responsible for another human being.

That is the part I fear some people don’t understand. I was responsible for another human being’s life, not just their career.

They were not merely another computer system or aircraft to help me accomplish the mission, they were someone’s son, daughter, mother, etc. Their families sent them to us to ultimately lay down their lives if asked, so I felt a solemn obligation to take care of them like I would want someone to take care of my sons, which meant taking time to actually know them on a personal level.

The Child Development Center hosted its first science camp at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, July 22 to 26, as part of the Air Force Specialty Camps offered every summer at the CDC and School Age Care program.

Gary Hernández, 50th Force Support Squadron school age coordinator and main organizer of the Air Force Specialty Camps, said the science camp gives school age children greater insight into topics they might not experience until later in their educational journey.

“With the science camp we are trying to expose children to new experiences and give them a head start on some concepts they might not readily be exposed to until later in their school years,” he said. “It opens up their eyes to opportunities in future career fields and also exposes them to high yield activities. We give them a chance to make a guess or hypothesis and learn about the deeper science. Taking this to another level is what I am excited for.”

Hernández said the camp introduces children into the science, technology, engineering and math fields, helping them decide future career interests.

“I think it’s good to get a head start on this area of knowledge, to give the children a chance to get exposed to STEM now so later they can really delve into something they like,” he said. “Right now, it gives them a taste and then as they get older, they can decide, ‘I like science itself, technology or engineering.”

Learn from other’s mistakes By 50th Space Wing Office of the Staff Judge Advocate SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The following actions were taken against members of the Schriever Air Force Base community under the Uniform Code of Military Justice and other Air Force regulations from April 1 to June 30, 2019.

These incidents serve as a reminder of the expectations that exist for members of the wing. They demonstrate the real consequences for those who violate the law and our Air Force regulations. There is no standard punishment when an action is taken. Rather, each finding and punishment decision is based on the unique facts and circumstances of the incident, as well as the member’s individual circumstances, and any response the member provides.

COURTS-MARTIAL:

A senior airman from 4th Space Operations Squadron pled guilty at a Special Court-Martial to Article 128, Assault. The individual’s punishment was a reduction to the grade of airman and forfeiture of $250 pay per month for one month.

ARTICLE 15s:

A staff sergeant from 50th Operations Group received an Article 15 for Article 107, False Official Statement. The individual’s punishment was a reduction to the grade of senior airman, 45 days of extra duty, and a reprimand.

A staff sergeant from 50th Security Forces Squadron received an Article

15 for Article 92, Dereliction of Duty.

The individual’s punishment was a suspended reduction to the grade of senior airman, forfeiture of $1,500.75 pay, 15 days of extra duty, and a reprimand.

Honorable Discharge: An airman from 4th Space Operations Squadron, was administratively discharged due to failure to maintain physical fitness standards.

General Discharge: An airman first class from 50th Operations Support Squadron was administratively discharged due to minor disciplinary infractions.

You can also learn from the mistakes of your peers.

Whether you’re an airman basic, a non-commissioned officer, or an officer, everyone is expected to maintain Air Force standards. Leaving your appointed place of duty without permission, failure to maintain dress and appearance standards (to include maintaining proper uniform combinations), creating a hostile work environment, failure to obey orders, wrongful use of illegal drugs, fraternization between officers and enlisted members, and failure to maintain Air Force minimum physical fitness standards are all examples of offenses that may result in disciplinary action and/ or administrative discharge.

Congratulations to Air Force Veteran Jim Onder! Jim was recently recruited to the team leading stand-up of U.S. Space Command at Peterson AFB. Following a uniformed career in the civil engineer arena, he finds his current role a familiar and welcomed professional challenge. “In 2017 my transition plan was to complete my degree, earn my Project Management Professional certification, and embrace my transition from the Air Force.” Jim achieved all three goals before seeking out Mt. Carmel and our community partners at Prep Connect 360, a five-day professional workshop touted as a ‘must have’ to successful career transition for veterans. “Mt. Carmel and PC360 gave me great confidence that what I did for the last 26 years transfers directly to the private and defense sectors,” said Jim. “I learned to network successfully with senior industry officials and focus casual communication toward career opportunities.” Today, Jim highlights Mt. Carmel and PC360 to service members preparing to transition. “I learned so much from my peer navigator, my peers and the alumni panel. I learned to share career success stories and challenges that were crucial to my current success,” said Jim. “I also value the continued support from Mt. Carmel and the professional network I developed throughout my transition.”

When I talk to people about leadership I use a phrase I thought of one day while watching someone drive their people into the ground. Anyone can GET results, but can you INSPIRE results? Do you motivate your people so they want to do the best they can at their job, or do they just fear the repercussions of failing? Do you allow them to fail and learn, or do you just move on to the next cog and write them off?

It has been my absolute honor and privilege to serve this great Air Force and country.

It is a privilege to serve, but like many of you, sometimes I focused more on what the Air Force could do for me, or complained about something I didn’t get.

In reality the Air Force owes us nothing. We should always remember when we’re having a rough day at work, somewhere in the world, someone is in a ditch or firefight, away from their family, fighting for their life still honored to serve this great country. Gone are the days of the draft, we have the pleasure to serve in a total volunteer force, we all chose to be here. Ask yourself: “Am I worthy of the honor and privilege to serve this country and everything it represents,” or am I just here to do a job?

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Security Forces Squadron conducted a field training exercise at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, July 20, to test and enhance their readiness and response ensuring they remain fit and professional in their craft.

The FTX which consisting of a simulated gate crash, a series of active shooter scenarios throughout the base and a squadron recall to test their mobilization.

Capt. Robert Scholl, 50th SFS operations officer and FTX commander, said they have never done an exercise at this scale.

“We typically do training exercises with specific flights in the squadron,” he said. “This exercise was different because we wanted to integrate the entire squadron into training cohesively where we have everyone on the exact same page and able to perform seamless transitions in a response without training and tactics disparity between each flight working different shifts.”

Staff Sgt. Caleb Bunton, 50th SFS combat arms instructor, said the FTX gives the unit a guide on where their training efforts need to go.

“We have standard training from the Air Force Security Forces Center and we conduct training internally,” he said. “This FTX allows us to build upon our training plans we already have in place.”

Bunton said the most rewarding thing about the exercise was seeing everyone come together.

“With the time line we had for the exercise, seeing everyone together, being motivated and embracing the training was cool to see,” he said.

EXERCISE From page 8 Scholl tied the importance of the event to the execution of their mission with an almost unfathomable degree of professionalism and skill.

“Being able to utilize these common buildings on the installation, especially when it comes to the DeKok Building and the 310th Space Wing Building gets us familiar with different workspaces on Schriever AFB,” he said. “In doing so, we can know what to expect as far as the layout of the building and the dynamics of exactly what it takes to clear them leading exactly into what we want, which is being proficient in immediately responding to an incident and going directly to the threat to be able to neutralize it and save our personnel on base.”

Scholl praised the efforts of the team responsible for putting the exercise together and said it took about a month of coordination to ensure time was used effectively and training was conducted safely.

“I think our training team, inspection team and standards and evaluation section put to together a great exercise, to be able to get a realistic training scenario going for our Defenders,” he said.

Scholl thanked the mission partners on the installation for their support.

“Using their workspaces was crucial in allowing us to go in and train ensuring we can respond and take care of whatever the threat may there may be, taking care of them and the base as a whole,” he said.

With the exercise the 50th SFS showcased their dedication to remaining sentinels of Schriever Air Force Base by remaining flexible in evolving, being unsurpassed professionals and lethal in their craft.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, slammed into summer when the 50th Force Support Squadron hosted its annual Summer Slam base picnic at Schriever AFB, July 22.

Eric McCullough, 50th FSS community cohesion coordinator, said the picnic grew by over 50 percent in events and vendors from last year.

“Hosting events like this is worth the time and effort,” he said. “It gives the base a chance to exhale, relax and have fun. Airmen and their families are able to put aside work for a few hours, recharge and decompress.”

Among the attendee’s was 2nd Lt. Travis Baker, 50th Space Wing protocol aid, who said the picnic was a good way to relax.

“Event’s like these are a good way to create a strong identity for our base and Airmen,” he said. “We’re a caring family that takes care of our own, and this event showcased that.”

Baker said the picnic was a good morale booster because it brought the base together in a low stress environment, and by being a morale booster, events like the Summer Slam can build resiliency by bringing Airmen together.

“My coworkers and I have had a lot of fun at this event and I look forward to participating in any future events here,” he said. “This event was a great way to bring our personal family into our Air Force family together.”

Airman Daniel Breimann, 50th Operation Support Squadron student, said the picnic made him feel more welcomed.

“Schriever Air Force Base’s Summer Slam was a fun and professional environment to kick back, relax and strengthen bonds with fellow Airmen and friends while forming new relationships with others,” he said. “The picnic made me feel like I was incorporated into the Schriever AFB family despite my short time here.”

Breimann said the event was a lot of fun because of the different activities and events.

“The Summer Slam was awesome,” he said. “It really just helped me relax, it was definitely a good time and I look forward to attending it again next year.”

McCollough said more than 2,000 people attended the event.

“The Summer Slam is our biggest event of the year and it was a huge success,” he said. “We met our goals and brought in new things (such as a BMX show and new vendors) for Team Schriever to enjoy.”

He said there were more than 130 volunteers helping with the event.

“Without the help of all of our volunteers, partners and everyone involved, this picnic would not have happened, so thank you,” McCollough said.

He said by creating a fun environment, Airmen can build stronger relationships with one another and have a chance to meet new people.
