Lt. Graham illustrates service before self

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — It’s difficult to miss the 6-foot-5 frame of 1st Lt. Hayden Graham, 50th Mission Support Group executive officer, at the 50th Space Wing headquarters building.

He’s not just at his desk or in the halls, but also in a photo on the third floor pulling up for a left-handed jump shot during an intramural basketball game.

It’s symbolic of Graham’s college athlete life, which he left behind to serve in the Air Force. The former U.S. Air Force Academy Falcon had a five-year basketball career, including one year at USAFA’s Prep School, but Graham had to fight for the opportunity to play collegiately.

“I didn’t get much love from anyone coming out of high school,” Graham said. “The Air Force Academy was one of my three actual scholarship offers. Other schools showed interest but never officially offered a full-ride scholarship.”

“I will always love and cherish the game of basketball and opportunities it provided me, but now I’m

investing in the Air Force.”

Graham built resilience and confidence during his sophomore campaign at an away game against San Diego State Dec. 31, 2014. The final 15 minutes of the Falcons’ matchup against the Aztecs changed Graham’s career.

“My teammate Kamryn Williams ruptured his Achilles tendon and coach [Dave Pilipovich] went back and forth down the bench and must have passed me four times,” Graham said. “Finally, he said, ‘Graham! You’re in!’ And I ended up having a great game. Obviously, I didn’t want Kamryn to be injured — that was tough to see — but I’m happy I was able to step up in his place.”

Graham carried that momentum the remainder of the season and throughout his junior and senior years. Graham led the Falcons in scoring and rebounds his junior season and averaged 12.6 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per contest in his final year at USAFA. It was the first time in 34 years a player accomplished the feat, according to Goairforcefalcons.com.

“I feel like I proved to myself internally, there was no one in the Mountain West [Conference] I couldn’t hang with at that time,” Graham said. “That was reassuring because,

for whatever reason, I grew up lacking confidence. Once I got out there on the court and proved to myself and others I could play, I knew there was nothing that could stop me from rising to the occasion.”

Graham parlayed that success into a pre-draft workout for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets June 15, 2017. Graham, however, got off to a rocky start.

“I had to set aside the fact that I was the Air Force Academy guy and just go out there and realize I had nothing to lose,” he said. “Once I did that, I had an amazing

workout and was super confident.”

Graham understood, though, he’d need to cherish the opportunity since it’d be his closest taste to professional basketball for at least two years.

During an NFL Draft party near Castle Rock, Colorado in April 2017, Graham and his friend, Jalen Robinette, former USAFA wide receiver, learned they’d have to fulfill a two-year commitment to the Air Force prior to being eligible for the NBA or NFL Drafts.

“We found out through Twitter that the new [Department of Defense] policy had broken,” Graham said. “[The policy] stated all athletes coming out of service academies, upon incurring their commitment, had to serve two years before leaving active duty to play professionally.”

Despite the rule change, Graham isn’t bitter about a shot at the pros and said he’s grateful to be in the Air Force.

“I will always love and cherish the game of basketball and opportunities it provided me, but now I’m investing in the Air Force, which has invested so much into me,” Graham said. “I put my best foot forward every day. You put yourself aside to serve others. My father told me my whole life that I’ve had this calling to be somebody for the people and to always find a way to make change and uplift those around me.”

Airman 1st Class Zachary Jones, 50th Force Support Squadron career development journeyman, can vouch for Graham’s selflessness and generosity.

Jones and Graham crossed paths while Jones played basketball at Johnson & Wales University and during Graham’s final year at USAFA. The pair officially met at Schriever and connected through their love of basketball.

“It’s been awesome to relate with someone who you can connect with on our level of sports,” Jones said. “He’s been a mentor to me, especially with him being on the officer side and me being enlisted.”

Now, Jones said he goes to Graham for advice and remains influenced by Graham’s positive attitude toward the mission and his dedication to improvement.

“He’s always great when it comes to leadership and knows how to take charge,” Jones said. “He’s talked to me about his experience from the Academy and his day-to-day tasks.

He’s always honest with me and he’s someone I know I can trust.

“It’s been great seeing how he goes about his tasks because I look at what he does and know I can take that out of his playbook and use it for mine,” Jones continued.

“He’s someone I consider a brother and I’ll always keep in contact with him.”

AXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. — Almost two years ago, I had the opportunity to visit the Air Force Academy with many of the leaders of 22nd Air Force where I found a beautiful base and campus full of rich history and traditions. One of the highlights was a tour of one of the newest buildings, Polaris Hall. Polaris (another name for the North Star) is a very modern building designed to foster collaborative, innovative problem solving with teams of Airmen.

The other purpose of the building is to house the cadet honor court. Before sophisticated navigation systems were developed, people navigated by using the North Star. The concept of the building is if a cadet has done something to stray off course and appears in front of the honor court they can look up through the specially designed roof to see the North Star so they can find their way back on course.

As I examine the many challenges that wing faces I sometimes wonder what direction to take, what’s the best course of action and what’s best for our Airmen? Like Polaris showing the way, I find no matter the challenge or the circumstance, guidance can be found in our core values. Integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do will apply regardless of the current crises we find ourselves in. Woven into each of the three values is respect; respect for yourself, respect for the organization and respect for each other. We all have the responsibility to hold each other accountable to respecting the

core values and each other, it’s integral to the success of each team and the organization at large.

Over the last 15 months we have increased our diversity in the gender and race demographics. Unfortunately, we aren’t very diverse when it comes to our more senior ranks and leadership positions. I’m committed to digging into the data so we can better understand our demographics throughout all ranks.

We don’t fully understand the situation yet, but we are enlisting the help of a small group to help us analyze the data and look for positive actions we can take to ensure all Airmen have the same opportunities to progress and develop. So far, the one thing we all can agree on is we all can do a better job of mentoring each other so all Airmen understand career paths and requirements for promotion and career development.

As we navigate our way through the plethora of immensely complicated challenges, we can always find our way by respecting each other and leaning on our Air Force Core Values for guidance.

Space Force selects 2.4K space operators for transfer

WASHINGTON — Following the May application window for active-duty Airmen in specified career fields to volunteer to transfer to the U.S. Space Force, the service has selected 2,410 members in the organic space specialties of space operations (13S) and space systems operations (1C6) for transfer beginning Sept. 1.

These space operators will officially commission or enlist, as applicable for officers or enlisted, into the Space Force and will grow the initial ranks of the new service.

“This is an exciting and historic time for these space operators who will be some of the first members to join the Space Force,” said Lt. Gen. David “DT” Thompson, vice commander, U.S Space Force. “Each one of them has an important responsibility to contribute bold ideas to shape the Space Force into a 21st century service.”

tions for required administrative tasks to complete prior to executing their transfers.

While most members will execute their transfers around Sept. 1, some members awaiting various administrative processes, such as a pending promotion board, will transfer at a later date when those actions are completed. The actual number of members who complete transfers may differ slightly from the number approved for transfer as members make this personal decision based

on their individual and family circumstances at that time.

“There has been substantial planning behind the scenes between the Space Force and Air Force personnelists to get us to this day,” said Patricia Mulcahy, deputy chief of space operations for personnel and logistics. “We understand the personal circumstances that influence a member’s decision to volunteer for transfer, and I am incredibly proud of the team’s thoughtfulness put into every

decision to ensure we provide members with as seamless a transfer process as possible.”

In total, more than 8,500 active-duty Airmen from 13 eligible officer and enlisted career fields volunteered to transfer. The 2,410 members selected were in space operations career fields. The remainder of the volunteers come from career fields common to both the Air Force and the Space Force: intelligence (14N), cyberspace operations (17X), developmental engineer (62E), acquisition manager (63A), operations intelligence (1N0), geospatial intelligence (1N1), signals intelligence (1N2), fusion analyst (1N4), targeting analyst (1N8), cyberspace support (3D0), and client systems (3D1).

Members in the common specialties will undergo a transfer selection process that will balance space experience, space credentials, and performance and potential as evaluated during a transfer board. Transfer boards for officer common career fields are continued page 5 | OPERATORS

scheduled for the end of July, and for enlisted common career fields later in the fall. The results will be announced approximately 30 days after each board is completed. Transfers for personnel selected from these boards are expected to begin Feb. 1, 2021.

Because active-duty space operations missions and functions will completely transfer to the Space Force and will no longer be available in the Air Force, space operators who declined to transfer during the May volunteer window will also receive MyPers messages later in July explaining next steps. Options for those members include applying for retraining into another career field, applying to transition into the reserve components, or applying for separation or retirement, if eligible. In the meantime, those members will remain in the Air Force and may be assigned duties in the Space Force. At the end of the transition period, expected to be sometime in 2022, organic space specialties will be removed from Air Force inventory and assignments in those mission areas will no longer be an option for Air Force members.

Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard personnel remain critical to the space mission. Today, Air Guard and Air Force Reserve units executing space missions are currently aligned to the Space Force, and will continue supporting Space Force missions in this status while the future of the reserve component for the Space Force is determined. The status of Department of the Air Force civilians, whether assigned to Air Force or Space Force organizations, is unchanged.

For members of the other military services, the timeframe for Army and Navy space requirements to move to the Space Force is in fiscal years 202223. Although legal provisions exist for members of other services to transfer to the Space Force, the current focus is on Air Force members. The Space Force will release further details for a limited inter-service transfer program for other sister services for fiscal year 2021.

Members in organic space career fields needing more information may contact their servicing military personnel flight or the Total Force Service Center.

Schriever conducts first archaeological survey in 30 years

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron Environmental Element organized Schriever’s first archaeological survey in more than 30 years, July 6-24 here.

The survey will provide the Environmental Element with information needed to sign programmatic agreements.

A programmatic agreement allows the element to track construction projects on an annual basis. This means the base would consult with the state and tribes yearly instead of doing so with every project.

To conduct the survey, the Environmental Element contracted archaeologists from Metcalf Archaeology Consultants to survey more than 3,000 acres on Schriever.

“The main goal was to locate anything older than 50 years old,” said Clive Briggs, Metcalf Archaeological Consultants project director. “It’s our job then to date it and figure out what it means. We found the remains of homesteads from the early 20th century, when people were first settling in the area and the main thing they were doing was ranching. We also found projectile points (Native American arrowheads) that are prehistoric (before settlers arrived in the area).”

The survey will allow the crew to sweep the installation and determine what cultural resources are present. A cultural resource can be anything from a 10,000 year old tool to a historic homestead from 100 years ago. The projectile points found

All findings will be recorded and reported to tribes who have interest in the area.

Findings that are considered historically significant will be protected by federal law, meaning the installation could not destroy or construct the area which is deemed significant.

“We didn’t really know what was out

there,” Lawton said. “We’re legally required by the National Historic Preservation Act to protect any cultural resources we may have or that may be of interest to any tribes [who] occupied this area, [and] this [survey] will give us a much clearer image of what we’ve got here and what we need to protect.”

The primary reason this was the first survey in more than 30 years was a lack of funding.

“A lot of our previous surveys proceeded without GPS,” Lawton said. “They were done in the early 80s when the only way to locate an archaeological site was to triangulate based on land forms. That made it harder to find and protect cultural resources because we didn’t know where anything was. Now [that] the archaeological crews are working with GPS units, we can walk right out to what we need to protect and know if a proposed project will affect the sites.”

The original survey was scheduled to occur in April or May, but due to the COVID-19 outbreak the 50th CE Environmental Element had to postpone the survey.

“Being stewards of the land is really important,” said Jasmine Saxon, Metcalf Archaeological Consultants archaeology technician. “Being on base, this land is owned by the government and it’s important [they] set the standard for everyone — that we need to protect and document [what we find]. We need to tell the stories that were here so we can learn the significance of this land and come together and connect through that storytelling.”

Schriever will perform an archaeological survey every 10 years going forward.

“Schriever Air Force Base is part of a bigger story — it was once a crossroads for people moving around the landscape — from as far away as the Dakotas and New Mexico to meet and trade. Then, it became a part of the American expansion West and homesteading, pioneering and ranching. There’s a long story here besides the Air Force story,” said Lawton.

The archaeological survey performed at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, discovered different historical items, to include this toy truck. The archaeology team believes this toy dates back to the 1930s, more than 80 years before the stand-up of the United States Space Force.

ACC officially declares FOC for Sixteenth Air Force (Air Forces Cyber)

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO — LACKLAND, Texas — Gen. Mike Holmes, Air Combat Command commander and Lt. Gen. Timothy D. Haugh, Sixteenth Air Force (Air Forces Cyber) commander declared Full Operating Capability for Sixteenth Air Force (Air Forces Cyber) during a virtual ceremony held here, Tuesday.

The declaration of FOC signifies that the Air Force’s Information Warfare organization met a rigorous set of criteria, including an approved concept of operations and demonstrated performance of mission under stress in simulated and real-world conditions.

“Today’s declaration of FOC demonstrates the Air Force’s trust and confidence in the Airmen of Sixteenth Air Force to deliver information warfare outcomes for the nation,” said Haugh.

In nine months and three days, the Airmen of the Sixteenth Air Force proved they are able to fully employ and maintain readiness to meet operational requirements.

This is a testament to the commitment of every Airman who ensures the IW force is ready to defend the nation.

Haugh highlighted the IW Numbered Air Force’s readiness through the approach of convergence in response to our adversaries.

“We have adopted an approach of con-

vergence that enables a clear focus on these hard problems,” said Haugh. “Convergence takes a global viewpoint and uses access to data across each functional area to generate insights and…integrates IW capabilities to produce timely effects in the information environment.”

As the Sixteenth Air Force looks towards the future it will realize convergence by leveraging the inherent strengths of all the Sixteenth Air Force units.

Holmes’ shared Haugh’s sentiments and believes the new combined environment has streamlined the way the Sixteenth Air Force gathers, integrates, implements and communicates IW technologies and the opportunities the NAF has given to expedite experimentation and create these modes of ingenuity that we need as a Joint Force to maintain our advantage will be easier to come by.

“Listening to everything the units are doing filled me with certainty that pulling this Numbered Air Force together was the right thing to do,” said Holmes. “You’ve worked relentlessly to optimize the readiness, employment, and presentation of not just [intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance] resources but cyberspace, electromagnetic spectrum, and other information operation

Holmes concluded the ceremony by extending his thanks to the entire Sixteenth Air Force team and signing the FOC declaration.

“As you go forward I believe that it’s going to be crucial for you to continually develop the United States multi-domain warfighting capabilities and to ensure that our methods are the most effective, most lethal, and that they remain on the cutting edge. I believe that the establishment of the Sixteenth Air Force will help us to modernize the way information flows from Airmen to 4-star generals.” said Holmes.

The 50th Space Wing has a rich history that started in the skies and dates back to 1949. Today, the wing is organized into four groups: the 50th and 750th Operations Groups, the 50th Network Operations Group and the 50th Mission Support Group, including 16 Geographically Separated Units across the world.

Through the 50th SW and its GSUs, the wing enables command and control of more than 190 satellites, to include commercial, Department of Defense and civil assets. The wing will deactivate Friday, July 24th upon the stand-up of the Peterson-Schriever Garrison.

— Team Schriever presented more than 40 awards to Airmen and civilians July 16, 2020, during the 50th Space Wing Annual and Quarterly Awards ceremony outside the Event Center here.

Originally, leadership scheduled the event for March. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they rescheduled the ceremony to July and moved it outside so more people could attend.

Col. James Smith, 50th Space Wing commander, commended the committee Airmen for setting it up and for their work to ensure the ceremony happened.

“What we do here is critical to our nation,” Smith said. “It takes a team to do everything we do. But it also takes some individuals who are standing out and going above and beyond, and that’s each and every one of you.”

“While the award winners are already aware they have won in their respective categories, we did not want to pass over the opportunity to give these individuals the recognition they deserve,” Block said.

Chief Master Sgt. Boston Alexander, 50th Space Wing command chief, highlighted the importance of Airmen and civilians who strive to improve the world with their work.

“Our nation, no matter the level of power, cannot move without what you do here at Schriever every day,” Alexander said.

“Whether it’s diplomacy, information, military or economic, we touch it because this is Schriever, and what we do here every day is championship business.”

Alexander also used motivational quotes to inspire those in attendance and watching via Facebook Live.

“As Sun Tzu would say, ‘Victorious warriors win, then go to war. Defeated warriors go to war, then seek to win,’” he said. “Here at Schriever, we win every day.

We’ve been waiting to do this [ceremony] since March and it wouldn’t be right without words from Jay-Z. Jay-Z would say, ‘Pound for pound, we are the best to ever come around here, excluding nobody.’

That’s how good you are.”

Smith closed the event by congratulating the award winners and nominees. He also provided thanks to all who helped with the event and those who assisted in recognizing Team Schriever for their work.

“Continue to do your jobs and the rest will take care of itself,” Smith said.

“Together we’ll continue to execute this awesome mission and be a champion team together.”

THIS WEEK 50th CPTS launches CSP The 50th Comptroller Squadron launched the Air Force Comptroller Services Portal July 20. The CSP is a user-friendly interface that delivers virtual CPTS customer service to regular Air Force military and civilian Airmen.

The CSP does not requires VPN access, but does require a CAC reader. The CSP allows customers to submit, review and track their requests anytime, anywhere. Email notifications alert the customer anytime their inquiry is updated and may also be
