M

any of us wear clothes to express ourselves, whether they’re nice suits on a night out or casual wear with clever sayings and designs on them. I believe the same is true when donning my Airman Battle Uniform. Just because it’s meant as work wear, doesn’t mean it is any less expressive of who I am. I look in the mirror each morning to check myself before leaving for the day, but I try to never forget to stop and briefly admire just what that guy standing in the mirror has accomplished. It’s a part of me just like anything else I would wear, and whether I knew it my whole life or not, the Air Force is something I was made for.

While in technical training, our group superintendent gave an illustration of how we can be perceived when seen in uniform by the public.

Around the late fall of 2001, Chief Master Sgt. Fischer stood in a store checkout line, and a young boy holding his mother’s hand stood in front of him. The young man stared at Fischer for a while in fascination, then finally, with enough courage mustered, asked him if the bad guys

he saw on TV were going to get him. Fischer told us that sparked something he would never forget; standing before this young man was a real-life G.I. Joe, taller than the young man could have ever imagined. He told us it clicked in his head almost instantaneously. In response, Fischer took a knee in front of the young man and spoke softly and confidently; “No, we will never let that happen.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The Child Development Center hosted its second annual Culinary Camp at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, July 15 — 19, as part of the Air Force Specialty Camps offered every summer at the CDC School Age Care program.

Gary Hernández, 50th Force Support Squadron school age coordinator and main organizer of the Air Force Specialty Camps said the camps are a venue for School Age children to meet special guests and visitors who come to teach them useful life skills, like cooking.

“We are trying to give the children an opportunity to develop healthy eating habits,”

he said. “We are giving the kids an opportunity for a new experience, to learn how to properly handle kitchen materials, like knives, and give them the chance to learn the right way to hold these devices, and learn about what it takes to really make a meal.”

Hernández emphasized the factor of safety during the camp.

“They cook hot meals, like soups, and handle the oven, so we give them cooking gear like oven mitts, pot holders and aprons,” he said.

Hernández explained the objective of the culinary camp.

“The idea is they are learning to make food for themselves so they build that reliance,” he continued page 5 | COOKING CAMP

said. “The food choices they are making are from scratch, so it’s a lot of fresh vegetables and meats.”

Ross Kassebaum, who has five years of experience teaching culinary arts to children, was the culinary teacher at this camp.

This is the second time he has come to Schriever AFB to teach culinary arts to CDC and SAC children.

Kassebaum gave a brief insight into what he will be teaching the following days at the culinary camp.

“It’s about making healthier meals.

In the meals we do there’s a lot of fruits and vegetables involved.”

“We want to teach them how to prepare and eat healthier foods,” he said. “We, as human beings don’t always do that. We like the fast and easy. We start off with learning how to safely use knives. We talk about healthy eating and each day will be different. We will talk about sanitation, food preparation, food allergies and how it all comes together.”

Kassebaum said the complexity of cooking can be surprising once it is experienced in a cooking camp setting like this.

“Cooking is a term that sounds so simple, but there is more to it. Getting things ready is important so it’s a matter of teaching them how to cook or improve some of their skills, if they already cook,” he said. “It’s about making healthier meals. In the meals we do there’s a lot of fruits and vegetables involved, so students learn and hopefully take home the practice of eating healthier.”

For Katelyn Kincaid, 50th Force Support Squadron SAC child youth program assistant, these events help children not only have a good time but also develop life skills.

“It helps teach them very important life skills and helps promote independence while in a safe and fun setting,” she said.

Arianna, 10, explained what she enjoyed the most out of this camp.

“I liked cutting and the bridge (technique) where you have to put your hands around (the vegetable or fruit) before cutting it in a certain way,” she said. “I liked to learn about cooking so when I grow up, I know good things to do.”

SAF/MR proposes officer promotion policy overhaul By 2nd Lt. Idalí Beltré Acevedo 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Assistant Secretary of the Air Force Manpower and Reserve Affairs Personnel visited Peterson Air Force Base Colorado, July 9, to discuss a new proposal to overhaul the way officers are categorized and promoted.

Col. Kelly Sams, Senior Military Assistant, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force Manpower and Reserve Affairs, explained the reason for the change.

“After more than 70 years under the same construct, we believe that it’s the time to adjust approaches and change business practices to foster joint warfighting experts, develop exceptional leaders and contribute to the Air Force we need for the future,” she said.

Sams explained the current categories.

“Line of the Air Force AFSCs includes all the AFSCs not related to Advocate General or the medical field and is (currently) the umbrella for more than 40 AFSCs including rated operations, non-rated operations, support and acquisitions,” Sams said.

The proposal will categorize Line of the Air Force AFSCs differently to benefit Airmen competing for promotion.

“The recommendation is to divide the current Line of the Air Force promotion category into six distinct categories,” she said. “Instead of being considered for promotion against officers from six different specialties, officers will now only be considered against those officers within their own respective category, all of which have similar career development patterns.”

Sams explained the new promotion categories.

“We identified the AFSCS with similar experiences, progression milestones, value of achievements, mission area focus, general identity and natural relationships we know exists between some specialties,” Sams said.

These new categories will optimize the way officers grow and develop in all aspects.

“These categories also represent the disciplines needed for future joint warfighting in ways that support the joint warfighter,” Sams said. “A new promotion category structure allows developmental agility to meet evolving mission needs which ultimately provide our joint partners and allies better professional warfighters across our full spectrum of capability.”

In a memorandum to commanders, Gen. David Goldfein, Chief of Staff of the Air Force and the Honorable Heather Wilson, former Secretary of the Air Force, are currently requesting feedback regarding the proposed changes which if approved, would be effective for regular Air Force promotion boards convening in the beginning of 2020.

“While these changes have been reviewed and discussed at leadership levels, we realize this would be a significant change for the officer corps. Rather than make an immediate decision, we thought it best to share the draft with commanders first in order to engage in a dialogue with the officers assigned (to them) and solicit feedback before proceeding.”

The Line of the Air Force Promotion Category Configuration proposes a new arrangement for Line of the Air Force AFSCs, categorizing them into six promotion categories. These categories represent the disciplines needed for future joint warfighting and allow for developmental competitive pathways that are optimized for each category. The officers assigned to each of these new six promotion categories would be competing for promotion amongst them.

50th SFS Reports, Analysis add to base security

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Security Forces Squadron Reports and Analysis office are sentinels of Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, vetting all clearance checks and ensuring personnel gaining entry meet the necessary requirements.

Staff Sgt. Brittinie Alvarez, 50th Security Force Squadron reports and analysis noncommissioned officer in charge, said her office is an additional layer to base security and defense, ensuring members on and off-duty are safe.

4th SOPS accepts control of WGS-10

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 4th Space Operations Squadron accepted control of the 10th Wideband Global Satellite during a ceremony at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, July 10.

The platform was launched earlier this year aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle from Space Launch Complex 37B, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, March 15.

In the ceremony, the satellite was transferred from the Space and Missile Systems Center to the 14th Air Force, who then transferred the responsibility of the vehicle down through the 50th Space Wing, 50th Operations Group and finally to 4th SOPS.

“We are one team,

with one mission and goal in sight.”

First Lt. Dion Tchokreff, 4th SOPS WGS engineer, said the transfer marks the official ownership and control of the satellite by an Air Force entity and will enhance the capabilities of the WGS series.

“WGS-10 will increase the strength in signal of the existing nine-vehicle constellation by 17 percent,” he said.

Following launch, Boeing conducted a series of on-orbit to verify the performance of the satellite for this moment.

“The Boeing and 4th SOPS launch, and early orbit team, went through a two-month rehearsal and a four-month execution period to ensure the vehicle safely arrived to geostationary orbit,” Tchokreff said.

WGS-10 is the second WGS satellite accepted since the now deactivated 3rd Space Operations Squadron unified with the 4th SOPS. “It’s been two years since the merger and the teams have

come together as demonstrated by the acceptance of this vehicle along with the previous one,” said Lt. Col. Timothy Ryan, 4th SOPS commander “We are one team, with one mission and goal in sight.”

WGS produces flexible, high-capacity communications for the joint warfighter by procurement and operation of the satellite constellation and the associated control systems.

“Anytime we put a satellite vehicle in orbit, we are gaining more resiliency, which is important in an operationally

contested and degraded environment,” Ryan said. “More importantly, it gives more of the abilities and the capabilities of the satellite to the warfighter.”

The launch and transfer of authority of this platform highlights the 4th SOPS’s commitment to evolving space, innovation and mastering space and alignment with the U.S. Air Force’s dedication to deliver secure and reliable satellite communications around the world to support the joint warfighter.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Vice President Michael R. Pence and Mrs. Karen Pence met with base leadership, Airmen and their families during a visit at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, July 10.

Upon his arrival, Pence and the Second Lady were welcomed by Maj. Gen. Stephen N. Whiting, 14th Air Force commander, and his wife Tammy, Col. Michael S. Hough, 30th Space Wing commander, and his wife Leslie, Chief Master Sgt. Daryl Hogan, 30th SW command chief, and his wife Talia, and approximately 150 Vandenberg families and friends.

To conclude his address, Pence thanked the service members and touched on the importance of Vandenberg’s role in protecting space as a warfighting domain.

“Never doubt that the work you’re doing here at Vandenberg is vital to our national defense, to America’s dominance in space, to our national security. Believe in your mission and know that the American people believe in you.”

Pot Hole Repair

Schriever Choir: Orbital Harmony Auditions

The Schriever Air Force Base Choir performance group, Orbital Harmony, will conduct auditions to fill vacant spots for the spring and summer 2019 performance season. All positions are currently open (soprano, alto, tenor and bass). Any experience level is welcome. Auditions are conducted by appointment in Building 210, Chapel Office. Mt. Carmel is proud to partner with the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region to bring a National Endowment for the Arts program, Creative Forces, to local veterans, military and families. The two-fold program embeds art therapists on 11 military installations nationwide (Fort Carson has a music therapist working with transitioning service members experiencing post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, and more). Second, the program ensures connection to local artists via the Military Arts Connection led by COPPeR. On behalf of a veteran or family member, MAC encourages behavioral health program managers to request an art enrichment experience, at no cost, with a local artist. Through COPPeR’s website, Kirsten Belaire, Mt. Carmel’s Director of Behavioral Health, can request experiences connecting clients to local art experiences. While Mt. Carmel has infused art in behavioral health programs for years, the MAC program is new.

“The arts (music, poetry, dance, photography, pottery, and so many more) provide us expression that goes beyond words and can be an outlet to express ourselves, in ways normal conversations can’t. In addition, they can increase our understanding of ourselves and others,” said Kirsten. “The MAC is an amazing program to augment traditional care.” The community is welcome to, “Coffee with COPPeR,” to learn more about the MAC, July 23, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Mt.
