SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The 4th Space Operations Squadron installed a new Family of Advanced Beyond-Line-of-Sight Terminal on one of their operations floors June 22-27 at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado.

The FAB-T is a terminal used to connect, command and control protected military satellite communications satellites. These new systems are more efficient and easier to operate than what was previously being used. The new terminal was installed by Raytheon Technologies and the 4th SOPS Protected SATCOM maintenance flight will monitor it in case any anomalies arise.

“The terminals we were using before couldn’t control some of the more advanced functions on our systems,” said Staff Sgt. Edgar Diamond, 4th SOPS protected MILSATCOM maintenance flight noncommissioned officer in charge. “Our old system was not user friendly in the least. If you clicked the wrong thing it would log you off the system. It was a pain and couldn’t be maintained by Airmen.

The FAB-T is more efficient and is going to be entirely Airman maintained.”

The MILSATCOM maintenance flight likes to joke that with the new terminal, it’s “push button, get satellite,” because of the simplified operations the FAB-T brings, and the reality of the matter is it’s only a little more complex than what they joke.

“To log onto a satellite with our old system was like a 20-page checklist,” Diamond said. “It took 30-45 minutes just to get online. With the FAB-T, it’s a half-page checklist and [you can be] online in maybe 10-15 minutes.”

The new terminal will also decrease the required number of Airmen who have to work ‘crew.’ Crew is a rotation that Airmen within a space operations unit must work as the system needs to be run 24/7. This can entail day shifts and shifts where Airmen work through the night.

“We used to have a dedicated person on crew to ‘babysit’ our old system, but now we can take the operators and train them to also maintain the FAB-T,” Diamond said.

Additionally, the 4th SOPS maintenance flight will have Airmen on-call 24/7 to respond to any maintenance inquiry an operator may have with the new system.

Saving the unit time and resources.

“It’s important we continually advance

our technologies. If we let it stay where it was, we can have issues with old equipment and systems, where it can become very difficult to maintain, because it’s so outdated and spare parts are no longer produced. As technology advances, some of those older systems really show their age. You can tell when a system was made in 1990.”

The installation of the new terminal was transparent to operations — meaning there was no negative impact on the 4th SOPS mission.

“The FAB-T is smaller, faster and easier to repair than what we were previously using,” Diamond said. “It’ll significantly cut back on down time involved with maintenance. With the FAB-T, it takes only a few minutes to repair, whereas our old system took all day.”

Another benefit of the FAB-T terminal is that the antenna length is longer, creating a more resilient machine.

“Having this new terminal installed makes my job easier and increases unit efficiency,” said Airman 1st Class Brice Brewington, 4th SOPS extremely high frequency satellite systems operator. “The new terminal helps improve our signal and the robustness of it so we have better connectivity in inclement weather, such as when it’s raining.”

The unit plans to install more FAB-T terminals in the future to increase efficiency in its mobile mission.

The 4th SOPS mobile missions include contingency and endurance missions. The contingency mission is put in place if the crosslinks (antennas that allow satellites to communicate with each other from space instead of having to send information to the ground and back up) on a satellite went down, the unit could go to a location on Earth in sight of the orbit of the satellite and repair it.

The endurance mission is for a global conflict, such as a nuclear war. The unit could go to an undisclosed location and operate the mission safely.

. E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. — Our society embraces the pursuit of leadership. If you want to be successful in the military, you need to be a strong leader, right? Read any performance report, and you will have the highlights of a person’s demonstrated leadership. If we are all leaders, who are we leading? Leadership is essential but so is its opposite: followership. Our military is structured like a pyramid, with a single leader at the top and a wide base of subordinates below. Since the number of followers exceeds the number of leaders, shouldn’t there be more discussion on how to be a good follower? No matter your rank you are part of the overall foundation of our military.

The author and retired Colonel Phillip Meilinger wrote an article called “The Ten Rules of Good Followership.” Ivey Business Journal defines followership as, “the ability to take direction well, to get in line behind a program, to be part of a team and to deliver on what is expected of you.” I prefer the simple take away from the quote attributed to Thomas Paine: “Lead, follow or get out of the way.” If we are going to partic-

ipate and we aren’t in charge then we support the one who is.

Meilinger’s first rule is: Don’t blame your boss for an unpopular decision or policy; your job is to support, not undermine.

I will admit I have failed in abiding this rule in my career. Of course a, young lieutenant knows more than senior leaders!

4th SOPS upends USAFWC 15-7 in softball opener

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Intramural softball at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, began July 7 following a hiatus due to COVID-19 as the 4th Space Operations Squadron defeated the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center 15-7.

Players returned to the diamond with new rules to hit the curve balls of COVID-19. Throughout the game, players continually sanitized bats and used different softballs.

Joel Boxberger, 4th SOPS flight commander, said he and his team appreciated the methods to keep players safe.

“We started off a little slow, but then we

to knot the contest at 5-all in the bottom of the third, but 4th SOPS broke the tie in the top of the fourth with a run. The next inning, though, the bats of 4th SOPS got hot.

“We started off a little slow, but then we really started to rally,” said Robert Kyner, 4th SOPS engineer. “That rally we had in the fifth really helped us out.”

The rally included an eight-run fifth inning when 4th SOPS built their lead to 14-5. Kyner said the change in their scoring came with more patience at the plate.

“That’s important out here because often times, it’s not the pitch you want and it might be a ball,” Kyner said. “If you get three, you’re on base. And that’s a free base and that really helped us out.”

The 4th SOPS scored its final run in the sixth and allowed just two runs in the bottom of the inning to give USAFWC its seventh run.

Though teams dealt with the COVID-19 rule adjustments, Kyner said those changes didn’t affect their strategy.

“It’s just playing like normal but doing a little cleaning and making sure you keep your distance in the dugout,” Kyner said.

Games will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the softball field with make-up games Wednesdays at the same location. This year includes eight teams participating in the six-week season. Following Thursday’s games, three teams remain undefeated as 1st SOPS and 4th SOPS hold 2-0 records.

The 50th Security Forces Squadron is also 1-0.

Meanwhile on the field, 4th SOPS and USAFWC teams attempted to separate themselves on the scoreboard through the first three innings.

After 4th SOPS took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, USAFWC scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the third, 4th SOPS grabbed the lead with a three-run inning of their own to make it 5-3 heading to the bottom of the inning.

participates in first advanced training event

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Twelve operators from the 1st and 7th Space Operations Squadrons, known together as team 8-ball, executed an orbital engagement training event July 7-10 at the Boeing Virtual Warfare Center in Colorado Springs to train operators in realistic warfighting scenarios.

This was the first advanced training event for team 8-ball since 1st SOPS assignment to the newly formed 750th Operations Group. The 7th SOPS is the Reserve associate unit to 1st SOPS from the 310th Space Wing who mobilizes to support the 750th OG.

“The impact of this type of training today is directly tied to the preparedness of these operators to tackle

tomorrow's large-scale conflicts.”

The group’s mission is to prepare, present and project assigned and attached forces to conduct, protect and defend operations, and provide national decision authorities with response options to deter, and when necessary, defeat orbital threats.

Team 8-ball used the same simulator as the Space Flag series, which is the Department of Defense's premier exercise for training Space Forces.

The goal of Space Flag exercises is to enable forces to achieve and maintain space superiority in a contested, degraded and operationally limited environment.

During the event, the operators were split into two groups of six, with each group participating in two days of the

event. Capt. Juan Trujillo, 1st SOPS crew commander, led the first group and First Lt. Andrew Sackett, 1st SOPS crew commander, led the second group.

Both groups of operators made up the blue team, which represented the U.S. during the training. Three orbital engagement system subject matter experts from the 527th Space Aggressor Squadron made up the red team and provided a ‘thinking’ adversary to the blue space warfighters.

Members from the Distributed Mission Operations Center-Space acted as exercise moderators and provided white-cell support, or support from trainers, instructors and planners. Team 8-ball weapons and tactics personnel provided tactical mentorship to the teams every step of the way.

“Prior to going out to the BVWC, all attendees received intelligence briefs on a fictional ‘road to war’ to help set the stage for what they were going to be encountering on-orbit,” said Capt.

Kevin Horner, 1st SOPS deputy crew commander. “They were also briefed on the commander’s intent to help ensure their mission plan was meeting the intent of their leadership.”

After arriving at the BVWC, the operators received training from Boeing on how to operate the simulator. The trainees were then given two orbital engagement scenarios that included red team and blue team high value assets.

“They had several hours to plan how they were going to proceed in each scenario in order to best meet the commander’s intent,” Horner said. “Their plans had to include contingency operations in case the scenario deviated from the most likely scenario assessed by intelligence.”

Then, the blue team briefed their plans to the Spaceboss, whose role was to dive into the details in the team’s plans to ensure their rationale was sound.

50th CPTS provides support as fiscal year winds down

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— As the fiscal year winds down, the 50th Comptroller Squadron works to ensure units have sufficient money to fund the mission.

Between January and March, each unit on base submits a request for their expected requirements for the following fiscal year. During that fiscal year, units receive a specified amount of money based on requirements in the organization through 50th CPTS. The 50th CPTS, which provides support and acquisition guidance and support to the 50th Space Wing and separated units, ensures money is used effectively and efficiently.

“We are key to funding the mission,” said Capt. Jeremy Lacewell, 50th CPTS deputy budget officer. “We make sure our team is valued and we’re always there to support everyone, no matter what. We make sure the bills get paid and we keep the lights on.”

Tech. Sgt. Drew Newlon, 50th CPTS noncommissioned officer in charge of financial analysis flight, said some units have numerous requirements while others have minimal needs.

“It’s not like giving an allowance where we say, ‘Here’s 10 bucks for you, here’s 10 more for you,’” Newlon said. “It’s more about providing money the units need to do their job. Fighter jets cost more than computer systems. A maintenance unit may need more money than an office organization.”

Throughout the year, units spend the allocated money on items presented in their budget. Occasionally, money remains leftover at the end of the fiscal year. Airmen in 50th CPTS work to calculate those numbers for further use.

by the groups,” Newlon said. “Then we use that funding to take care of any requirements that come up last minute or requirements that may not have had enough funding up to that point in the fiscal year, we pool that money together and take care of what we can as quickly as we can.”

Units must use their money by July 31, otherwise remaining funds become available for redistribution.

“When we come in the door Aug. 1, anything that has not been earmarked for a requirement, [that money] then belongs to the wing commander [to redistribute],”

Newlon said. “We can run some different reports on our system to figure out what the budget was [for each unit] to see what they’ve spent so far and what’s earmarked. The wing commander takes control of all those funds and then goes down his priority list of other requirements that may have popped up.”

For units that have exhausted their funds, but still have funding requirements, Newlon said CPTS has an unfunded process, which is used when groups don’t have enough money in their budget and require additional assistance.

“The [527th] Aggressors were operating the red vehicles to provide a thinking adversary,” Horner said.

“Ideally, the teams had prepared for the contingencies they encountered and were able to adjust their operations quickly and effectively to counter the adversary’s actions.”

Finally, the trainees had an opportunity to review the scenario they’d just executed. In a standard post-mission activity known as shot-validation and debrief, they were able to break down each crucial decision they made and help come up with takeaways they can implement in future operations.

Both teams of operators highlighted how the event was the best possible way for them to problem solve and put their training and experience to the test.

“The event was truly ‘eye opening’ and gave me a large-scale perspective of everything that goes into an orbital engagement from start to finish,” Trujillo said.

Distinguished visitors who received tactical plan approval briefs and/or out-briefs from the teams included retired Brig. Gen. Steven DePalmer, Lt. Col. Tracie Barrett from the Headquarters Advanced Training Branch, Bell and Lynch.

“The impact of this type of training today is directly tied to the preparedness of these operators to tackle tomorrow's large-scale conflicts, which many predict will begin in the Space Domain,” DePalmer said.

As first-hand observers of the training event, the skill and hard work of the operators didn’t go unnoticed by the distinguished visitors.

“All of the distinguished visitors were highly impressed with the level of expertise and detail the crews put into their mission plans, and their solid understanding of orbital mechanics and the tenets of orbital warfare,” said Capt. Emily Schultz, 1st SOPS weapons and tactics flight commander.

An event of this scale is not made a reality without

units early in the fiscal year,” Newlon said.

“For this fiscal year, we received our initial distribution money in March, which was half way through the year. We’ve identified the requirements a year ago, but we can identify the shortfalls and submit the unfunded, saying we’re short on our contract. If we can shift funds to cover other requirements, we’ll try to do that first. If we can’t, that’s fine, we just identify it as unfunded.”

The wing has a financial management board that determines who gets to use the remaining funds and how those funds are distributed.

“We go to the wing staff and say we’re short on some things and ask if they have additional funding they can distribute,” Newlon said. “[The commanders will] have a discussion and say they have this unfunded or that unfunded. The group commanders configure how to prioritize those unfunded.”

Throughout the process, communication is key, as 50th CPTS remains in constant contact with units to ensure they satisfy requirements.

“As we get close to the close out [of the fiscal year], we schedule meetings and reach out to everyone we’re supporting to see what’s going on or what requirements they may have remaining this year,” Lacewell said.

“We’re constantly working with [the 50th Contracting Squadron] to make sure we’re hitting the deadlines they have as well.”

Lacewell said Airmen in 50th CPTS understand their role and how critical it is to ensure each unit remains funded. He added 50th CPTS fields “all sorts of questions,” but encourages Airmen to ask those questions for learning purposes.

“We work our hardest to take care of [Team Schriever],” Lacewell said. “We want to make sure we’re looking out for everybody. If there’s any support anyone needs, just let us know because we’re here to help.”

extensive coordination. Personnel from several different entities, including members from 1st SOPS, 7th SOPS, 527th SAS, Boeing, DMOC-S and U.S. Space Force Headquarters S3/6TA executed more than 80 hours of planning.

“Our planning process involved first sitting down and determining what our learning objectives were for the event,” Horner said. “The next step involved determining what members would be able to participate during the event. Our team 8-ball operators really stepped up and agreed to participate during their [down time].”

The final phase consisted of logistics planning that relied on constant communication between team 8-ball, Boeing and DMOC-S to ensure that everything from computer accounts to food trucks were taken care of.

Boeing is under contract to ensure seven training events of a similar nature to this one are done annually, evenly distributed among all USSF units.

“So likely, each unit can plan on participating in one to two events like this per year in its current construct.

This will be more likely as COVID restrictions dissipate,” Horner said.

Department of the Air Force stands up Diversity and Inclusion Task Force Staff report

WASHINGTON — The Department of the Air Force, in support of both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force, stood up a special task force June 9, to address the issue of racial, ethnic and other demographic disparities and their impact on the forces.

Also, on June 2, Secretary of the Air Force Barbara M. Barrett and service chiefs, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein and USSF Chief of Space Operations Gen. Jay Raymond, directed the Inspector General to independently review the service’s record on military discipline as well as leader development opportunities for Black/African American Airmen and Space Professionals.

The task force is charged with identifying and changing policies, procedures, barriers and other practices that may be unfairly impacting underrepresented Air and Space Professionals. It is postured to identify near-term problems and solutions that will have immediate benefits for members, with a focus on policies particularly impacting minority members. It has been tasked to be mindful of not impacting or assuming results from the IG’s review, and is therefore focused on immediate actions versus identification and action toward lon-

ger-term systemic and cultural issues the IG might identify.

“Clearly we have to acknowledge our Air and Space Forces are not immune from racism and the challenges of inequity. As a force that depends on unity, inclusion, and a common strength of purpose, we are committed to being better every day until all within our ranks feel a true sense of belonging that allows them to maximize their talents,“ said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, deputy chief of staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services. “This is why we stood up the task force, to move out quickly and deliver immediate improvements for our services.”

Capitalizing on continuous feedback from the force and the momentum from current national events, the task force is an agile cross-functional team of military and civilian Air and Space Professionals that represent communities within the services that bring subject matter expertise to the changes being considered. Members are comprised of Airmen of different ranks and perspectives, representing both minority and majority groups, whose sole focus is making changes that create an equitable environment for all Department of the Air Force personnel.

The task force is task-organized across five lines of effort: • Culture and Policy • Education, Training and Testing

• Recruiting and Accessions • Workforce Diversity • Aircrew Diversity “We have a unique and historical opportunity to truly make a difference in the lives of our Airmen and Space Professionals,” said Brig. Gen. Troy Dunn, Air Force director of Military Force Policy and recently appointed director of the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. “Over the past few weeks, we’ve been working quietly behind the scenes to tackle these issues. Though we have a long road ahead, I’m really proud of the work this team has done. We want our people to know that we’re steadfast in our commitment to building an Air Force culture of diversity, inclusion and belonging.”

To date, the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force facilitated the following changes:

Minority Serving Institutions ROTC scholarships

In conjunction with the Jeanne M. Holm Center for Officer Accessions and Citizen Development, the task force is working to increase and offer scholarships for nearly 300 current and future ROTC cadets attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities or Hispanic-Serving Institutions. The qualified recipients will receive a full-ride scholarship with full tuition and fees paid starting in the 2020-

21 school year. The move is intended to increase minority representation in the officer ranks, something the Air Force has struggled with. Currently, racial and ethnic minorities make up 40% of the U.S. population but only 24% of the officer corps.

Revised dress and appearance regulation

In an effort to be more inclusive of all Airmen and Space Professionals, the task force worked to revise Air Force Instruction 36-2903, “Dress and Personal Appearance of Air Force Personnel.” The changes include removal of subjective language, including the word “faddish” and references to complexion; both subjective terms that were in some cases unfairly targeting specific demographic groups. The update also included authorization for men to wear their hair parted (cut, clipped or shaved), and authorization for name tapes to include diacritical accents, which aid in proper pronunciation and provide a more accurate representation of a legal name.

when I made an unpopular decision and heard the grumblings within my unit. It was embarrassing to apologize both to my boss and to my unit for setting such a poor example.

Accept responsibility whenever it is offered. This goes against the old adage of never volunteer, but it is a great way to grow and learn something outside your career field. Some people are afraid to take chances and “risk” their reputation.

If you never try anything then you never learn anything. Our military is designed for continued growth and development of the individual. If you are afraid to take

a chance then maybe you should think about a different career. No one expects everything to be perfect when starting a new project. Whether it is organizing volunteer effort, running a snack bar or being the project officer for a DV visit, you will learn and grow from the experience. Additionally, if you are being offered responsibility then someone sees potential in you. You may not see it in yourself, but trust their judgement.

Keep your boss informed of what’s going on in the unit: people will be reluctant to tell him or her their problems and successes. This I have seen too many times to recount. Sometimes the assumption is that the commander must know everything is going on.

Commanders are pulled in so many

directions with the job that we rely on “trusted agents” to keep us informed.

Without that, we miss out on providing support when required or nipping problems in the bud before they fully develop. Two examples, one on each side of the issue. I suffered a significant loss shortly after PCS’ing into a new unit. It was years later and it came up in a discussion with the commander and he was floored that it had transpired without him knowing. He was hurt that no one had brought it up to him and felt that he had failed me. On the other side, I was approached by one of my non-commissioned officers and was notified that a Staff Sergeant was dealing with a tough divorce and may be suicidal. I had not known that there was anything hap-

pening much less a divorce. I was able to start the conversation and assist the Airmen in getting the help he needed.

These are a few vignettes on followership and some different aspects of it.

Being considered a follower and not a leader often carries negative connotations. We need to realize that being a follower is just a role and one that we experience more than leadership. Just as a strong leader is essential for mission success, so is a strong follower. As we take care of our Wingmen, we should expand that to include bettering our followership skills. We have all volunteered to support and defend and our mission is too important to fail. I challenge everyone to think more actively about followership and how well we are doing it.

Improved shaving waiver procedures

In conjunction with the Air Force Surgeon General, the task force used feedback from the field to improve the shaving waiver process. Air and Space

The CSP a user-friendly interface that delivers virtual CPTS customer service to regular Air Force military and civilian Airmen where and when you need it.

This self-help tool pulls information from a customer's Common Access Card to catalog key documents and pay information.
