I am thankfully humbled by my fellow Airmen as they point out missing pieces of information or better alternatives to my desired methods. “It’s a big event, and you can’t get it done without the volunteers,” he said.

“That’s been the only stop-growth for us.”

McCullough’s favorite part about organizing the event has been trying to make it as big as possible to ensure attendees enjoy themselves and talk about it long after it’s over.

Amador’s favorite part about organizing morale-boosting events like the picnic is seeing everything come together.

“Having the meetings and seeing everyone take ownership of their part of it and then coming together at the end to execute a fantastic event, that’s really where it makes me feel like everything is worth it,” she said.

McCullough praised Amador and Tech. Sgt. Wes Wright, 50th FSS noncommissioned officer in charge of First Term Airmen Center, for their hard work and dedication in making sure the event is as flawless as possible.

“It’s really those guys who make events like these possible,” he said. “I’m the face, but I’m not the whole thing.”

McCullough’s hope is people have a good time for four hours.

“Whatever is going on in their lives, they can put that stuff aside, come out with their families and enjoy it,” he said.

Schriever Airmen maintain readiness, sustainability through training

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron Emergency management flight helps Airmen remain prepared professionally and personally for any conflict, response or humanitarian action demanding their support, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Tech. Sgt. Sam Norris, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron emergency management flight section chief, said one of his flight’s core task is to ensure Airmen are prepared for deployments.

“Our training provides combat-ready Airmen for the combatant commanders,” he said. “All Schriever Airmen should feel confident in their pre-deployment chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear training and be prepared for the deployed environment.”

Staff Sgt. Cameron McFarland, 50th CES training and logistics noncommissioned officer in charge, said Airmen are required to be 100 percent deployable and it is not just limited to training courses like CBRN or self-aid buddy care.

“You have to be ready to deploy in a moment’s notice and if you are not trained as required it can be costly,” he said. “For CBRN, if you are in a high-threat area and you don’t know how to don the equipment properly, don’t know how to render aid, or a number of other things you will not perform well.”

The flight supports all of the 50th Space Wing, conducting thorough CBRN classes and making sure all instructors have the appropriate qualifications.

“We have the typical training slides, but where we place the most emphasis is being able to wear the equipment correctly,” McFarland said. “If you can’t wear the equipment properly, then it is not going to do you any good.”

The flight offers approximately 24 classes a year, sometimes tailoring classes for the 310th Space Wing on the weekends and classes at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

“We do not let anything slide during our classes, we stop and check to ensure everyone is wearing the gear appropriately,” MacFarland said. “We can talk CBRN all day, but we have to be vigilant as instructors making sure people know how to put the gear on when it counts.”

Georgia. During training, EM’s experience real nerve agents in a controlled environment with scientists on hand to make agents and items to counter the agents.

Within the last two years Headquarters Air Force changed the frequency of readiness training from 36 months to 18 months. Shortly after this change, the service goal was set to have 100 percent of the Air Force trained.

According to McFarland, one way the EM flight tries to

meet this requirement is through exercises.

“Our flight is looking to increase the frequency of exercises held, especially at a place like Schriever Air Force Base,” McFarland said. “In spite of this, we have to ensure we remain ready.”

— The National Space Defense Center dedicated their operations floor to Senior Master Sgt. Harold Mosley, II during a ceremony with senior leaders at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, July 9.

Capt. Martin Adamson, 50th Space Wing chaplain, began the ceremony with an invocation.

“We pause for a moment to remember Mose,” he began. “We remember that although he does not physically walk among us, his presence looms large within these walls. We remember, before you and one another, that the things that take place here are in large part due to his efforts from the beginning of this great endeavor.”

“His attention and creativity were the foundation of what takes place here, resulting in nothing less than the defense of our nation, the domain of space,” Adamson continued. “May this thanksgiving spur us on to do our best each and every day.

“This is the place where they put the weapon systems experts,

the best of the best.”

Remind us to honor Mose by excelling in our work, challenging each other to get it right, because our nation depends on us.”

Col. Mitch Stratton, NSDC director, highlighted Mosley’s upbringing in his comments.

“Senior Master Sgt. Mosley was a proud Cajun boy from Opelousas, Louisiana, a small town with an incredible sense of family,” he said. “His Louisiana family all knew him as ‘Robbie’. I was humbled to visit Opelousas for Robbie’s funeral and meet so many of the folks who knew him.”

Stratton explained Mosley’s military family knew him as “Mose,” who almost joined the Navy before being persuaded to join the Air Force, where he quickly excelled in all he did.

Air Force Base, Colorado, he was selected to move to the 50th Operations Support Squadron as the noncommissioned officer in charge of weapons and tactics flight.

“This is the place where they put the weapon systems experts, the best of the best,” Stratton said. “As a Buckley alumni myself, I can tell you what a superior contribution he made and what a remarkable capability Space Based Infrared System Spacecraft has become. As a testimony to his work, Mose and his team won the Weaver Award as the best OSS in Air Force Space Command.”

Additionally, Mosley worked in the 1st Space Operations Squadron as the NCOIC of future operations weapons and tactics, and flight chief of space superiority development.

“What couldn’t be said at the time was

Mose was writing the tactics, techniques and procedures manual for the geosynchronous space situational awareness program,” Stratton said. “You can be sure people like Mose didn’t accidentally get assigned to onboard this cutting edge technology. He was hand selected talent, and he nailed it.”

Stratton said when the NSDC decided to hire their first ever senior enlisted leader, there was no other choice but Mosley.

“Since joining the space community, he was on the leading edge of not only thinking about space superiority, but fielding capabilities to make it a reality,” he said.

“When I was selected to be the director of the NSDC, the first phone call I got was from Mose. He couldn’t wait to team up and get to work; to take space warfighting to the next level.”

Stratton directed the audience’s attention

to the Mose Memorial Library in the corner of the ops floor.

Items such as 93 books from Mosley’s personal collection, a wounded warrior cap, and Ride 2 Recovery medal are displayed in honor of his dedication to service and his community.

“Mose was a wingman,” Stratton said.

“Our library has mementos that pay tribute to his fellow warriors.”

Stratton closed the ceremony with a quote from Theodore Roosevelt: “Never throughout history has a man who lived a life of ease left a name worth remembering.”

“A life of ease was not in Mose’s DNA,” Stratton said. “He stood the watch for more than 18 years, dedicated to serving his country. We are all better off for having known him. He leaves a name worth remembering, so we shall.”

Twelve OAY; Team Schriever takes the cake

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Being recognized as an outstanding Airman at the Air Force level is tough, but this is what two Team Schriever Airmen accomplished when they earned the Air Force 12 Outstanding Airman of the Year award.

Air Force officials select the 12 OAY award winners based on superior leadership, job performance and personal achievements.

Staff Sgt. Caryn Frederick, 19th Space Operations Squadron technician, said the recognition feels surreal having been chosen as one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen.

“It’s one of those things where I had assumed I would feel high and mighty, proud beyond belief that I had been able to make it so far — and I do feel proud — but surprisingly, I’ve noticed that I haven’t focused internally on my accomplishments nearly as much as I assumed I would,” she said. “In all honesty, I noticed instead, all of my focus has been on reflecting on those around me and how they have truly influenced me and morphed me into the Airman I am today.”

She said earning the award is humbling.

“I have been fortunate to be recognized at such a high level,” she said. “I don’t consider myself as one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen, I consider myself as one of the many phenomenal Airmen across the Air Force that strive to achieve excellence in all they do.”

Lvova said maintaining the right mindset is essential for Airmen to have a successful career.

“Attitude is everything,” she exclaimed. “I try to always stay positive, have an open mindset and I always try to go the extra mile.”

Lvova is originally from Russia and attributes some of her work ethic to her upbringing.

“Hard work is important me; however, constantly evolving processes and not remaining stagnant is more important,” Lvova said “Enabling my team to tackle the mission effectively and efficiently has always been my primary objective.”

She said it is important to recognize the process behind earning an award like this.

“I’m proud of this award, but not because ‘I’ earned it,” Lvova said. “This kind of award only happens when you have the support of everyone around you, when you’re surrounded by outstanding Airmen, and when you’re part of a champion team.”

She said it is important to be around motivated people in order to stay motivated.

“My office was very supportive,” Lvova said. “Earning this award was a team effort. Leadership from the top down, along with the Airmen I’m surrounded by constantly empowered me, provided guidance and allowed me to lead a stellar team.”

She said her goal was not to win awards, but to contribute as much as she could to her team and the mission.

“You need to choose mentors that challenge you and push you to go above and beyond your comfort zone,” Lvova said. “It may seem painful at the time, but it’s all

Schriever AFB housing gets new shingles

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In August 2018, a damaging hail storm hit Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, damaging many of the Tierra Vista Community houses.

Iris KirkPilger, TVC project director at Schriever AFB, is overseeing these repairs.

“The hailstorm produced quarter-plus-sized hail,” she said. “This damaged the shingles on over 80 percent of the houses here, so we’re replacing them. Currently we have 31 structurers completed with about 38 remaining.”

She said providing quality housing is important for Team Schriever so they can stay mission ready.

“Shingles provide water durability for structures and without proper shingling and maintenance of the houses, you would see more rapid deterioration,” she said. “Framing

members or exterior trim components could deteriorate more quickly because the roof provides protection to the structure overall.”

KirkPilger said TVC’s top priority is its customers.

“The team has been working as quickly and diligently as possible to ensure the least amount of interruptions to the members of our community,” she said. “They’re working to minimize impact as much as possible. There still are some working pains such as congested streets and limited access driveways, but at the end of the day we want to ensure our residents have the best possible living conditions.”

She said the shingles are designed to last around 30 years, withstanding sudden changes in weather.

“It is a priority to provide information and updates to our residents,” KirkPilger said. “On the website there is a hail repair section where people can review the schedule, sequence

As Airmen and as leaders, we all face the challenge of balancing our lives — bringing together work, family, community, hobbies and friends. We need to integrate all elements of our lives so we can be the same person in every environment.

It is about staying grounded.

Being a leader is tough and higher degrees of stress exist as Airmen move up in leadership roles. An authentic leader doesn’t avoid stress. Instead, they learn to maintain a sense of equilibrium. Spend time with family, engage in spiritual practices, go exercise — these are all essential to your effectiveness as Airmen and leaders — to sustain your authenticity.

The path to becoming an authentic leader starts with knowing your true self and the foundational values that give you purpose in leading fellow Airmen toward success. Take good practices shared by successful role models and add them to your leadership toolkit, but do not the practices solely define who you are. Build and strengthen your relations with others and harmonize all aspects of your life to be your own definition of an Airman and leader.

Schriever invites children to soccer camp By 2nd Lt. Idalí Beltré Acevedo 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Child Development Center hosted its second annual Air Force Specialty Camp, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, July 8 — 12.

Eight children from the School Age Care program, ages 6 to 11, attended the camp that focused on soccer-related activities and games.

Gary Hernández, 50th Force Support Squadron school age coordinator, and main organizer of the Air Force Specialty Camp, said these events help the children experience something out of the ordinary while learning a new skill.

“While we are teaching them those skills, they learn skills for life — winning, losing and

good sportsmanship.”

“We actually have coaches come in who specialize in this kind of coaching,” he said. “It gives them an opportunity to experience something more intense than what we are able to give them on a day-to-day basis. It also gives us an opportunity to (teach) them more in-depth skills.”

David Gardner and Jordan Salamido coached the kids during the soccer camp.

Gardner, who has more than 20 years of experience coaching soccer teaches at Winter Springs High School for the Seminole County School district in Florida, and is an academy coach for the Orlando City Youth Soccer Club.

He elaborated on the activities and the skills they imparted to Schriever children during the event.

“Basically, we bring a soccer camp to the base and we do different activities to teach the kids the different skills they need for soccer while playing fun games related to soccer,” he said. “While we are teaching them those skills, they learn skills for life — winning, losing and good sportsmanship.”

Gardner explained the natural progression of the soccer camp during the week.

“It’s a really good program, the kids really enjoy it,” he

said. “Sometimes they know nothing about soccer and by the end of the week they are able to pick a couple of skills they can use. Some of them are pretty good so hopefully we can teach them some new moves, something they can add to their game and have them grow and develop not just in soccer but in life.”

Loida Foster, 50th Force Support Squadron SAC program assistant, said the event helps the children with their physical and mental development.

“It keeps the children physically active, mentally fit and at the same time they have a good time,” she said. “It keeps

each and everyone engaged in an active lifestyle.”

Gabriel, 11, explained why he participated and what he enjoyed the most out of the camp.

“I like soccer and that’s what I want to be when I grow up, a soccer player,” he said. “I enjoyed playing the game ‘king of the hill’, it’s just really competitive and I just think it’s fun and I guess it helps the kids get to know each other better.”

The Inspector General Office will be closed at noon on July 26 for an official function.

Normal office hours will resume on July 29.

The Civilian Personnel Office has new customer service hours: 7:30 a.m. — 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 1 — 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.
