PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— 21st Medical Group clinic personnel began administering Peterson-Schriever Garrison’s first round of COVID-19 vaccinations to first responders, who are within the Defense Department’s Phase 1A priority group, Jan. 5.

In December, the DoD announced its deliberate and phased plan to distribute and administer the initial and subsequent allocations of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The vaccine is the result of Operation Warp Speed, a national initiative to accelerate the development, production and distribution of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.

“With the vaccine now available, we have our first opportunity to go on the offensive against COVID-19,” said Maj. Taylor Timberlake, P-S GAR public health emergency officer. “Based on initial studies, the vaccine showed to be quite effective against development of symptomatic COVID-19 as well as protecting against the more serious symptoms that had been placing people into the hospitals. With widespread vaccination, we should see decreases in hospitalization rates and ideally against infection and transmission rates.”

CCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. — Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "When your character is built on spiritual and moral foundation, your contagious way of life will influence millions.”

King influenced how Americans felt, thought and acted during the civil rights movement in the 1960s like no one had ever done before him.

He inspired millions of citizens to engage in action for the betterment of America. In doing so, he also influenced millions of people across the globe, including myself.

I was born and raised in Lome, Togo, West Africa.

When I was 8 or 9, I came across King's "I have a dream" speech in one of my textbooks. His words inspired me so much that I would read it over and over until I had memorized the entire speech in French. Little did I know I, too, would one day become an American.

In 1998, I won a lottery visa that granted me the ability to immigrate to the United States under the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program.

I was 18 years old when I arrived in Atlanta, coincidently, the hometown of my hero, Martin Luther King Jr. I didn’t know any English and I didn’t have any family in the states. I traveled with one carry-on

ASD, SEAC visit newest combatant command, recognize members

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The honorable Christopher C. Miller, acting Secretary of Defense, and Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Ramón “CZ” Colón-López, visited with U.S. Space Command leaders to discuss the combatant command’s missions and to recognize some of the members executing those missions at Schriever Air Force Base, Jan. 13.

U.S. Space Command Commander, Army Gen. James Dickinson, and Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Scott Stalker, command senior enlisted leader, welcomed Miller to the base along with Joint Task Force-Space Defense Commander, Army Brig. Gen. Thomas James and Space Force Chief Master Sgt. Jacob Simmons, JTF-SD senior enlisted leader.

“Growing up watching the space race, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would say ‘astronaut,’” Miller said. “My son said a professional lacrosse player.

Thanks to what you all are doing here, [young people] have the opportunity to say astronaut, Guardian or to specialize in space. It’s truly awesome what you’re doing here.”

Dickinson set the stage explaining the command’s structure where JTF-SD nests then James provided a condensed mission brief in order to get Miller and the SEAC out to meet the team conducting operations.

Once on the floor, Miller recognized Army Maj. James Kirby, JTF-SD chief, Operations Integration branch and Echo Crew mission director; Shane Cowen, JTF-SD orbital analyst; and Stephanie Ouding, JTF-SD deputy chief, intelligence division; for their efforts in executing the task force’s protect and defend mission. Additionally, Miller recognized Space Force Capt. David Kessler, Delta 9 Initial Qualification Training branch chief, and Space Force Master Sgt. Matthew Harrell, 3rd Space Operations Squadron mission assurance flight chief, for their warfighting efforts in support of the combatant command.

“Thanks for making history,” Miller said. “There’s so much ‘suborbital’ (What’s your saying for ‘beneath the surface?’) stuff here — what you’re doing here is amazing.”

Due to his position’s unique nature, the SEAC took a moment to explain the meaning behind his dog-tag shaped coin. It features the SEAC colors as this position is the only enlisted position with its own flag.

“It reminds me of my responsibility to you,” he said.

“My signature is on there to remind me it’s my name on the line. The constitution is on there to remind me of the oath we took to protect it.”

The SEAC chevron recognizes of the rank change for this position. Most of the service emblems are on the coin, one with the Space Force emblem is forthcoming.

“This helps me remember my commitment to the joint force,” Colón-López said.

He also included a quote on his coin: “Amateurs train until they get it right, professionals train until they cannot get it wrong.”

“Set the example for those who follow you,” he added.

The SEAC then met with more of the unit’s enlisted members to hear about their roles within the organization.

“We are not taking this lightly,” he said in reference to the members’ efforts and the Space Force at large. “This is real, this is happening, what a great opportunity! You’re on the forefront of defining what it means to be a Guardian.”

Prior to departing, the SEAC challenged a service member to a pull-up in one of the doorways. With fingers just barely atop the narrow door jam, Colón-López completed his with ease. And then calling on his enlisted heritage set about training his fellow enlisted service member to follow in his footsteps.

“See, you can hang on like that all day,” said Colón-López.

Enlisted Guardian, Airman selected to commission into USSF

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Two Space Delta 9 enlisted members will begin their journey to become officers following their selection for the Senior Leader Enlisted Commissioning Program.

While U.S. Space Force Staff Sgt. Brandon Steele, 3rd Space Operations Squadron mission planner, and U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Seth Taylor, 1st SOPS cyber transport systems technician, are in SLECP they will pursue full-time degrees on active-duty status. Following completion, both will attend Officer Training School to earn their commissions.

Military members selected for SLECP are allowed to attend universities of their choice, online or in-person, to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in a major of their choice.

Steele will attend Middle Tennessee State University to complete his degree in Mechatronics Engineering, and Taylor plans to attend the University of Arizona to obtain a Geographical Information Systems degree.

“I had many reasons to apply [to SLECP]. My philosophy is: If you don’t try, the answer is always no,” Steele said.

Steele attributes his selection for SLECP to persistence and people he connected with.

“While building my package I ran into a lot of roadblocks, but I kept pushing back and seeking help from my mentors and friends,” Steele said.

U.S. Space Force Tech. Sgt. Robert Zwirn, 3rd SOPS flight chief, said the first time he met Steele, he immediately stood out as unique.

“He constantly looks for ways to bring people together, which has been refreshing

during the pandemic,” Zwirn said. “He is very passionate about his job and is always looking for ways to improve not only his job, but the lives of the people he works with, too.”

Zwirn said he could not think of a better choice for the SLECP than Steele.

“Steele is a natural leader,” he said, “I look forward to saluting him one day.”

Taylor said education is very important to him and SLECP will allow him to finish his degree.

“I knew that I wanted to serve as an officer,” Taylor said. “I see my goal as a big step in both personal and profession-

al development, and this program offers the solution to being able to reach [these] goals.”

His leadership was a large part of him getting selected for the program, he said, because they allowed him to take lead on large projects that were atypical for a Senior Airman, which was Taylor’s rank until recently.

U.S. Space Force Tech Sgt. Shawn Tierney, 1st SOPS flight chief, explained how Taylor naturally leads others toward mission success. “[Taylor’s] work ethic shows his astute attention to detail, determination and drive to ensure that every task is com-

pleted to the best of his ability,” Tierney said.” Not once has he faltered with a task that should be near impossible and instead he has completed it with ease and professionalism.”

The “can-do” attitude Taylor carries rubs off on his teammates and pushes the mission in a direction not thought possible, Tierney said.

SLECP is a very unique opportunity with a competitive selection process.

“What I would say for those that are looking for an edge [in the SLECP selection], is to look for opportunities to build your [AF Form] 1206,” Steele said. “Find mentors who are good at writing bullets, and have them work with you on learning what makes good bullets and how to write them well yourself. Pour your heart into your essay and make sure when the board reads your essay, tell them what it means to you to be picked for the program.”

This year, candidates were required to write a one-page essay on their desire to serve, fill out a career-encompassing AF Form 1206, pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test, receive recommendation letters from leadership and provide military and school records to apply.

“Enlisted members interested in SLECP should inform their leadership to discuss their interest in commissioning,” Taylor said. “After this they will need to speak with their commander’s support section where they can get a point of contact with useful information on the program.”

The application may change year to year, so these requirements may change for 2021.

“SLECP is an amazing opportunity and I encourage any enlisted members who wish to commission to consider submitting an application for this program,” Taylor said.

Faces of Space – Capt. Ronald J. Miller

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Growing up in Syracuse, N.Y., Ronald Miller wasn’t the kid who dreamed of joining the military. The idea wasn’t on his radar, despite growing up with family members who served. Today, he is Capt.

Ronald Miller, Space Delta 9, 3rd Space Operations Squadron mission assurance flight commander.

“It wasn’t until America was in Iraq and Afghanistan that I thought that [military service] was going to be my future,” Miller said.

Originally, Miller planned on enlisting in the U.S. Army after high school, but his uncle, who currently serves in the Army National Guard as a Chief Warrant Officer logistics manager, convinced Miller to go to college and earn a degree. Miller finished his degree and in 2011 enlisted with the U.S. Air Force. Most recently, he’s transitioned into the U.S. Space Force.

“I got a business degree in 2009, and I wanted to serve in some federal capacity as my grandfather had done after he left the Army,” Miller said.

Not long after, he applied to Officer Training School, but he was not chosen due to the competitive selection process.

Nonetheless, Miller still wanted to serve, so he enlisted as a cryptologic language analyst in 2011. He continued on this career path until he was a senior airman.

“Once I hit my time of eligibility and time on station, I applied for OTS,” he said.

This time he was accepted and would commission in 2015.

“Shortly after commissioning, it was clear to me that I worried about things a lot more than everyone else,” Miller said candidly.

Miller struggles with generalized anxiety disorder. While he has been dedicated to his work throughout his life, he said the anxiety has negatively affected him, some of his relationships, and has even caused panic attacks.

“I felt like a hypocrite being an officer that was supposed to care for and inspire Airmen and Guardians to perform self-care and be open to addressing their mental health, and not do so myself,” said Miller. “I scheduled an appointment with my primary care manager and he confirmed that I failed to properly manage the stress in my life, and assured me that talking to a mental health professional was the right thing to do.”

Miller said he considers talking to a therapist to be a major turning point in his life for the better, and for others that are struggling, he hopes they find the strength to reach out for professional help.

“I cope with regular sessions with my psychologist and focus on the principals of ‘Acceptance and Commitment Therapy,’ which teach you to not regret or fight inva-

sive and persistent thoughts,” Miller said.

“I am constantly mindful of aligning my actions with my personal values, which is the cornerstone to me not overthinking things.”

One of his greatest coping mechanisms for anxiety has been riding his motorcycle.

“When [I’m] riding, there is nothing to be concerned with other than the here and now, including the wind on your face and the sights and smells of the road,” he said.

“I find myself to be most at peace with my lack of thoughts when I am on the road.”

Miller also said that being in the U.S. Air Force has helped him cope as well. The structure that military service has helps reduce the amount of decision-making he has to do day to day, giving him a clearer and easier path and helping him maintain focus. Overcoming these struggles has also helped mold him into a better and more understanding leader.

“I take leadership to heart and always want to improve my leadership abilities,” Miller said. “I learn from leaders I have met in the past. That way, I can learn how to best interact with people, inspire and influence.”

According to Master Sgt. Matthew Harrell, 3rd SOPS mission assurance flight chief, Miller is more than just a leader — he

excels at his job in every aspect.

“Captain Miller is extremely driven and work-focused,” said Harrell. “His ability to lead, multitask and still manage to track all items is above most officers I have seen in my career. Captain Miller’s capacity to listen to guidance from those around him prior to making final decisions shows his ability to lead from the front.

Miller said he gained his values from his grandfather, who served in the U.S. Army as a radio intercept operator. He was raised by his grandfather, who also instilled discipline, order, and the value of family.

“Whether it is caring [for my family], providing in times of need or being there for them, my grandpa is truly the model example of all of that.” Miller said. “He inspires me to be the best version of himself.”

Miller’s family includes Mikaela, his wife of three years, and their cat. Miller said when he does have children, he’d encourage them to pursue military service, be it for education or for a career.

In his off time, Miller likes to go out to yard sales, auctions and thrift stores to collect treasures and antiques. His favorite find is a five-foot wide piece of art depicting aerial combat by the artist Roy Lichtenstein, who

taught at the school in Miller’s hometown.

He said the art is like bringing a piece of home with him wherever he moves.

“I’ve recently gotten into woodworking,” Miller said. “I want to get into more of restoring things, just finding it at a yard sale or thrift store, something someone threw away or wants to get rid of.”

Miller started collecting tools for woodworking when the COVID-19 pandemic started because most everything else he liked doing was shut down.

“I am drawn to making things because I am in complete control of the entire process,” Miller said. “I can take however long I want to make it just right, and whatever turns out is a direct result of the effort I put into it.”

His favorite thing to make while woodworking is wooden pens.

“I am most proud of a pen I made for my grandpa, because he really was impressed that I was able to make something like that,” Miller said.

Miller said hobbies get his mind off of things during his off time, but when he struggles at work he thinks of his older brother, Mike. A month before Miller enlisted, his brother passed away due to complications with HIV. “Mike was a few years older than me and my sister, and since we were raised by our single mom, he was essentially the man of the house and kept us all in check,” Miller said.

Miller said his brother was a happy person, so almost every memory with him was a good one.

“The memory I think of most fondly was in his final hours when he held my hand and told me how proud he is of me and that he knew I would make something of myself,” Miller said.

When Miller reflects on his brother being so strong at his weakest, it gets him through his own tough times.

“In my head, I associated his passing with the beginning of my military service, since they roughly happened at the same time,” Miller said. “Whenever I’m struggling on the last lap of a [physical training] test, I look back and see him at his sickest and remember his strengths, and that helps me get through it.”

Miller hopes sharing his story will help others feel comfortable if they want to talk about the loss of someone close to them or something that’s impacted them on a personal level.

In the next 10 years Miller said he plans to keep on his journey as a space officer, though he was already making plans for retirement.

“In 20 years, I would hope to be working in a small woodworking shop that I would like to own,” Miller said. “In 30 years, I’ll be snuggled down with my family on the East Coast somewhere with a big barn and a much larger woodworking shop.”

bag and $250 in my pocket. All I had was hope and belief in the American dream.

In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, I enlisted and joined the United States Air Force. I was determined to serve, to protect and to defend a country that I had long fallen in love with through King’s words and vision.

In his "I have a dream" speech, King painted a brighter future for our country when he said, “I have a dream, that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

As a young boy growing up in poverty and under a dictatorship regime in Africa, those words gave me hope that one day I would also grow up into a better life. A life where my kids would not have to walk miles to school barefoot with no food in their stomachs.

Today, I am a proud American Airman; an American Airman judged not by the color of my skin, nor by the fact that I am a naturalized citizen, but by the content of my character and my performance as a senior noncommissioned officer.

I am grateful for my career, particularly the four years I spent at the White House in direct support of the first Black president our nation had elected 45 years after King’s dream.

ble if King had not had a dream that he believed in. The same dream he fought and died for. My story is one in a million already told and millions more that have yet to be told.

The racial struggle in our country is not over yet; however, King’s dream is still very much alive today as it was the first day he delivered it. It will continue to be alive as our nation continues to exist because it is a dream embedded with American ideals and the principles upon which our nation was founded.

Like King, each one of us is called to work hard to preserve the founding fathers' idea that all men are created equal. When we act together we can achieve great things, not just for our nation but for the world. We can build a society where our children and grandchildren can thrive together no matter their diversities.

We can find strength in our uniqueness that was King’s dream and vision for our nation. We should celebrate him because, as President John F. Kennedy said, “A nation reveals itself not only by the man it produces, but also by the man it honors, the man it remembers.”

A&FRC to host Heart Link seminar

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Airman and Family Readiness Center will host its bi-annual Heart Link seminar from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 3 in the A&FRC classroom in Bldg. 101.

The mission of Heart Link is to ensure spouses recognize their importance to the Air and Space Force and feel as though they are a part of the team.

The seminar is typically for Air and Space spouses married five years or less, but Melvin Castile, A&FRC personal and work life specialist and key spouse coordinator, said the event is available to all spouses regardless of how long they have been associated with the Air or Space Force.

“The Air Force felt a lot of spouses didn’t know what some of the services were on base and developed this program,” Castile said. “When a military member goes home, they don’t say, ‘this is what legal does, this is what the [Military Personnel Flight] does.

We have representatives from different sections and other base agencies come in and tell spouses what services they offer.”

Castile said providing varying perspectives, especially to younger military spouses, allows them to recognize the importance of their spouse’s mission and the resources available for their family.

“We hope when [attendees] leave the seminar they feel better about the location they’re in,” Castile said. “We hope they’ve learned about all the different services available to them for free.”

Kristy Smith, A&FRC Key Spouse mentor, helps with the seminars and shares her experiences with those who attend the events.

In the past, Smith said the seminar helped her learn about several aspects of the Air Force and added that it’s never too late to learn about a base.

“I knew some of those programs existed, like the Airman and Family Readiness Center, but I didn’t know where everything was,” Smith said.

“There’s always something to learn and it’s good to know those things exist. A lot of people don’t realize there are so many options available.”

Smith said she likes that the seminar provides tours through the Restrict area to provide further understanding of an Airman or Guardian’s mission.

Though the service remains unavailable due to the pandemic, Smith expects it to return.

“To have an idea of what [your spouse] does is amazing,” Smith said.

“I think it’s a nice help to have an idea of what it’s like to see what your spouse does on a daily basis.”

El Paso County now in Stage I fire restrictions

El Paso County now in Stage I restrictions and will remain in this stage until conditions and resourcing warrant a change.

Stage I’s guidelines are: • Outdoor blasting, welding and torches: Allowed with caution.

• Campfires in developed campgrounds and/or picnic grounds: Allowed in permanently constructed fire grates, charcoal grills and wood burning stoves.

• Model rockets: Not allowed.

• Public prescribed burning/burn permits are not being issued.

• Outdoor smoking: No smoking outside unless in an enclosed building or vehicle, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren and cleared of all flammable materials.

• Sale or use of fireworks is not allowed.

• Outdoor cooking (private property): Allowed if smaller than three feet in diameter and less than two feet high, that are kindled for the purpose of cooking food using only clean dry, untreated wood or charcoal, which are contained by fireplaces, fire pits, (free standing and/or above ground), barbecues or other systems approved by the local special district having fire jurisdiction or the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

• Outdoor fires at residence: Allowed if the fire is contained within liquid-fueled or gas-fueled stoves, indoor fire places or wood burning stoves. Allowed in permanently constructed fire grates, charcoal grills and wood burning stoves in outdoor areas cleared of all combustibles, using dry untreated wood and or charcoal.

ON BASE Dependent ID shortage at MPF

The Military Personnel Flight is experiencing a shortage of dependent IDs. The Air Force will be shifting to Next Gen IDs for dependents and no longer ship additional orders of the previous ID card stock. To make the current stock last, the MPF will be prioritizing issuance of dependent IDs, only new dependents who have experience a change in status will be issue a card at this time. An exception for expired dependent IDs has been extended to June 30, 2021, with memo in hand that is provided by MPF. Once the Next Gen cards are functional, MPF will start issuing them based on priority and availability. For more information, call the MPF at 719-567-5900.

AFRC to host Right Start

The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosts a Right Start Information Fair 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., the third Thursday of each month at the base event center. Right Start is a mandatory course for incoming active duty members and Department of Defense affiliated contractors that informs personnel about programs and resources on the installation. Cold weather safety tips Cold weather can increase heart rate and blood pressure. It can make blood clot more easily and constrict arteries, which decreases blood supply.

This is true even in healthy people. Individuals over the age of 40 or who are relatively inactive should be particularly careful.

National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely: • Do not shovel after eating or while smoking • Take it slow and stretch out before you begin • Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter • Push the snow rather than lifting it • If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel • Lift with your legs, not your back • Do not work to the point of exhaustion • Know the signs of a heart attack, and stop immediately and call 911 if you're experiencing any of them; every minute counts
