“Some benefits of SVN-77 are a longer lifespan and more advanced automation,” McLaughlin said. “This enables the satellite to perform immediate safing actions when faults are detected by the software. This capability allows 2 SOPS to adapt to changing mission requirements efficiently and safely.”

As more satellites are introduced into the constellation, improvements will be seen by users worldwide.

The signal produced is more accurate and harder to jam, and a new civil signal that is compatible with international navigation systems will become available.

Captain Collin Dart, 2nd SOPS engineering analysis flight commander, reiterated the importance of SVN77’s operational acceptance.

“SVN-77 marks the 23rd vehicle in the GPS constellation that provides M-Code signal across the globe, said Dart. This leaves just one more GPS III vehicle until 2nd SOPS and the Space and Missile Systems Center meet the Initial Operational Capability of 24 M-Code capable vehicles in order to provide full global coverage to warfighters and users.”

USSF’s GPS satellites provide services to more than 4 billion military and civilian customers worldwide.

Operators from 2nd SOPS work to ensure this capability remains a secure, reliable asset to civilian life and military missions across the globe.

AMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — I’ve been in positions of leadership most of my career, and during those years, I’ve learned extensively about the difference, in my opinion, between a bad leader and a good leader.

Some of those lessons I learned the hard way, through trial and error and humbly overcoming those mistakes.

But most were through observing those I thought to be great leaders whose example I vowed to follow. The following are a few pearls of leadership philosophy that I’ve gathered along this journey.

As a leader, it’s important to know who you are and the values and rules that you will abide by, regardless of the circumstances you face. It is your duty as a leader to both know and openly communicate those values and rules of engagement with the people you lead.

This creates an atmosphere of certainty, trust and transparency. For example, it’s imperative that I develop and communicate with my squadron members my “red lines,” these are circumstances or events for which I have absolutely zero tolerance for: DUI/DWI, illegal drug use, sexual harassment and discrimination.

Election Security

By being up front with these expectations, my squadron will immediately understand there will be consequences should these red lines get crossed; there is no element of surprise or excuses.

Leaders must lead with integrity, as well as by example.

Leading by the “do as I do rather than just as I say” philosophy establishes credibility and reinforces trust.

“Good leaders inspire Airmen to do great things.”

Good leaders listen without being condescending and are willing to hear what others have to say without rushing to judgment. Always seek feedback from your commander, your subordinates and your peers. This 365-degree look provides valuable insight into your leadership style and potential areas for improvement.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Leadership has many meanings, and in a structured military organization, it is often defined by the member’s rank and duty title. But true leaders are not confined by those two factors.

Chief Master Sgt. Michael Rozneck, Space Delta 8 senior enlisted leader, said being a leader includes guiding other Airmen or Guardians toward improvement and showcasing how to become a better person.

“[Leadership is] about getting the mission done, but we have to focus on our people, too,” Rozneck said. “We have to take care of our people by tearing down any roadblocks they have, so they can mentally and physically come to work every day to do their job without excess interference.”

they communicate openly and often, with their commander, subordinates and peers to provide that same valuable and critical performance feedback and share ideas.

Leaders must maintain good order and discipline, with a genuine desire to help the people they lead to improve. If reprimand is necessary, do it without anger and relay feedback in a direct, yet respectful way. Remember, it’s the behavior that needs correcting. “Punish in private. Praise in public.” Always hold yourself and your people accountable to a high standard.

Good leaders inspire Airmen to do

great things. They give them the values and rules, set the boundaries to operate within, then encourage their people to go out, make their own choices, and give them the freedom to try new things, even allowing them to make a few mistakes along the way so they can learn and grow from those mistakes.

Delegate! Delegate! Delegate! Yes, it would be easier and more efficient to do it yourself, but that doesn’t allow for personal and professional growth for the people you lead. This is probably your biggest role as a leader — to groom future leaders. "Build the Bench."

Remember, we have a mission to do.

Therefore, you can’t be afraid to make demands of the people you lead. Good leaders understand it’s a mistake to be too soft, just as it’s a mistake to be too

harsh; you must strike that fine balance.

You need to have courage to direct people in the work that needs to get done, expressing belief or encouragement in your people’s abilities, delegate duties, and teach or correct your people along the way. Motivate each individual in your squadron to recognize their potential.

Keep everything in perspective. Don’t rush in to make short-term decisions.

Take all the facts into consideration, keep long-term goals in view, put fixes in place today that will benefit the organization and your people both now and in the future.

Lastly, the Commander’s Inspection Program is only as good as the sensors and the operators within it. Engage, monitor and direct the inspection pro-

cess. Expect your programs to have deficiencies or performance gaps, as it demonstrates you are actively monitoring and improving your processes — “Embrace the red!”

Always have cross checks in place — “Trust but verify.” And, I recommend that you have your own squadron CIMB as one means of a cross check so you can stay informed and current on the health of your CCIP, and be better prepared to contribute to our boss’ own Commander’s Inspection Program.

Thank you for the opportunity to share my leadership philosophy with you. Just like me, I’m sure you have also developed your own thoughts along your own journey as well. I hope that I may have opened your eyes to some new pearls to add to your arsenal.

Rozneck said it’s not an excuse to slack and it provides an opportunity to highlight Airmen’s capabilities.

“I’ve been leaning on my [noncommissioned officers] and [company grade officers] because they’re much better with technology than I am,” Rozneck said. “I’ve asked them, ‘What ideas do you have?’ I’ve been in [the Air Force] 22-plus years, and as far as technology, new ideas don’t just flow out of me.”

Rozneck also said it’s not just important that leaders speak to younger Airmen about doing what’s right, but back their words with actions.

“What we do and what [Airmen] see is more important [than our words],” he said. “You can say something, but if you don’t walk the walk and [Airmen] don’t see you do what you say, then it’s hypocritical.”

Those actions include properly wearing a mask, everyone, including

leadership, teleworking throughout the week and fulfilling physical training obligations.

“If I’m not working out every morning or if I’m not doing what I need to do, so when that [physical training] test comes, that’d be hypocritical,” he said.

“Showing up and doing what you said you’d do shows leadership.”

Along with keeping one’s word, Col. Ericka Farmer-Hill, 50th Mission Support Group commander, said struggle is part of the leadership process — when a person makes a mistake or fails at something, those errors are lessons to propel Airmen to success.

“If you’re willing to stay determined, work according to a plan and keep getting up when you get knocked down, you’ll achieve any goal and someday your dream,” Farmer-Hill said. “I never let any of my failures stop me.

Don’t think for a second I didn’t take a moment to regroup, but I didn’t let [failure] stop me.”

Rozneck and Farmer-Hill both said it’s important to improve constantly.

Both added that their Wingmen boosted them to new levels of success they couldn’t have reached by themselves.

Farmer-Hill said Airmen shouldn’t be afraid to get assistance from their leadership.

“If you need help, call me,” FarmerHill said. “I may know someone who can help you. I believe I’m successful because I have a team of people who invested in me. I want to be that person to someone else. I offer assistance to anyone who desires help.”

Social Security payroll tax deferral Staff Report Peterson-Schriever Garrison Public Affairs

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — UPDATE: The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 was passed and extended the period for collecting deferred 2020 Social Security taxes. The period for collection is now January 1, 2021 through December 31, 2021 (instead of January 1, 2021 to April 30, 2021).

DFAS will update this website and send communications to the affected workforce explaining the changes made by the Act. At the end of December, the 2020 Social Security tax deferral ended. Beginning January 2021, the normal 6.2% Social Security tax withholdings will again be deducted from pay for military members and civilians, and an additional deduction for the deferred 2020 Social Security tax collection taken from pay.

Background Social Security (Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance) or “OASDI” tax withholdings were deferred effective September through December 2020, for those military members with a monthly rate of basic pay of less than $8,666.66 and civilian employees who had wages subject to OASDI of less than $4,000 in any given pay period. This action was in response to the Presidential Memorandum issued on August 8, 2020, the Internal Revenue Service Notice 2020-65 issued August 28, 2020, and at the direction of the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Personnel Management.

Military Members 1. For active duty military members,

the total amount of 2020 deferred Social Security taxes will be collected evenly from pay between January 1 and April 30, 2021.

2. For reservists and guardsmen performing only intermittent duty from January to April 2021, the collections may not be split evenly across pay periods. DFAS will collect 6% of net available pay each pay period. Collections may be extended past April 30, 2021 if the member does not earn enough pay to collect the 2020 deferred taxes before that date.

3. Beginning in January 2021, your myPay LES will reflect the monthly collection amount and contain a note in the remarks section that shows the remaining balance of deferred Social Security taxes.

Civilian Employees 1. The amount of Social Security taxes deferred in 2020 will be collected in eight installments between pay-periods ending January 16 and April 24, 2021.

2. Beginning in January 2021, your myPay LES Remarks section will include the 2020 deferred OASDI collection amount in that pay period, as well as the remaining balance to be collected.

If you separate or retire prior to the deferred Social Security tax being collected in full, you are still responsible for the remainder of your Social Security tax repayment. The unpaid balance will either be collected from your final pay or you may receive a debt letter with instructions for repayment.

Note, a Form W-2c may not be required for members who separated in 2020.

El Paso County now in Stage I restrictions and will remain in this stage until conditions and resourcing warrant a change.

Stage I’s guidelines are: • Outdoor blasting, welding and torches: Allowed with caution.

• Campfires in developed campgrounds and/or picnic grounds: Allowed in permanently constructed fire grates, charcoal grills and wood burning stoves.

• Model rockets: Not allowed.

• Public prescribed burning/burn permits are not being issued.

• Outdoor smoking: No smoking outside unless in an enclosed building or vehicle, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren and cleared of all flammable materials.

• Sale or use of fireworks is not allowed.

• Outdoor cooking (private property): Allowed if smaller than three feet in diameter and less than two feet high, that are kindled for the purpose of cooking food using only clean dry, untreated wood or charcoal, which are contained by fireplaces, fire pits, (free standing and/or above ground), barbecues or other systems approved by the local special district having fire jurisdiction or the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

• Outdoor fires at residence: Allowed if the fire is contained within liquid-fueled or gas-fueled stoves, indoor fire places or wood burning stoves. Allowed in permanently constructed fire grates, charcoal grills and wood burning stoves in outdoor areas cleared of all combustibles, using dry untreated wood and or charcoal.

Questions or concerns for the garrison commander may be submitted using the new “Questions?” feature on Schriever’s Air Force Connect app. The commander will answer the questions, which may be submitted anonymously, on a regular basis through Garrison-wide emails and social media.

Dependent ID shortage at MPF The Military Personnel Flight is experiencing a shortage of dependent IDs. The Air Force will be shifting to Next Gen IDs for dependents and no longer ship additional orders of the previous ID card stock. To make the current stock last, the MPF will be prioritizing issuance of dependent IDs, only new dependents who have experience a change in status will be issue a card at this time. An exception for expired dependent IDs has been extended to June 30, 2021, with memo in hand that is provided by MPF. Once the Next Gen cards are functional, MPF will start issuing them based on priority and availability. For more information, call the MPF at 719-567-5900.

AFRC to host Right Start The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosts a Right Start Information Fair 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., the third Thursday of each month at the

base event center. National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely: • Do not shovel after eating or while smoking • Take it slow and stretch out before you begin • Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter • Push the snow rather than lifting it • If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel • Lift with your legs, not your back • Do not work to the point of exhaustion • Know the signs of a heart attack, and stop immediately and call 911 if you're experiencing any of them; every minute counts

Description: Seeking a career officer or senior non-Commissioned office (NCO) with strong experience in Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS) data management, Fire Direction, Analysis and Logistics. Position is both CONUS and OCONUS. Initial assignment includes 2 months of stateside training and 12 months OCONUS operations.

Basic role is to provide in-country representation to allied/friendly governments in AFATDS acquisition, sustainment, integration with related fire control data systems, and operations and serve as manufacturers’ Point of Contact.

STRONG PLUS: Familiarity with overall field command architecture and components, including Command Post of the Future (CPOF), Command Post Computing Environment (CPCE), Forward Area Air Defense Command and Control (FAADC2), Air And Missile Defense Workstation (AMDWS), Tactical Air Integration System (TAIS), Air Defense Systems Integrator (ADSI), Blue Force Tracking (BFT), Global Command and Control System-Army (GCCS-A), Multilateral Interoperability Programme (MIP), and associated servers on the Battle Command Common Services (BCCS) or Tactical Services Infrastructure (TSI) Stacks.

Education: -Technical Master’s degree and 6 years AFATDS or Fire

Interpersonal Communications: -Confidence interacting with all military ranks from the solider to the experienced commander.

-Ability to speak and write effectively.

-Calm in crisis: get the info, ID the problem, solve it. Get help as needed.

-Strong interpersonal, team building skills.

Work in a multi-company, multinational group as a supportive Team Leader/ member.

-Professional attitude, military bearing, calm in crisis. You will represent our company, the manufacturer, and the United States military to the Army of a foreign nation.

-Ability to use Microsoft Office.
