CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Throughout our time in uniform, the prescribed curriculum of professional military education and the informal discussions of mentoring and professional development urge us to continuously consider various aspects of leadership. We learn that in preparation for formal leadership roles, the success of our teams can hinge on clarifying the leadership trinity: mission, vision and priorities. With this framework, we provide focus and direction that enables lowerlevel decision making. As effective as this can be, another dimension is necessary to truly empower our teammates to operate autonomously — command (or leadership) philosophy.

Command philosophy captures your intent for turning the trinity from mere words into reality.

As I prepared for squadron command, I found it difficult to boil down the pages of leadership theories and ideas gathered over the years into a simple, yet meaningful, phrase that communicated to the 1st Space Operations Squadron our priorities and decision making processes. I immediately found myself facing the persistent debate that seems to become the standard for evaluating leaders: mission versus people. After carefully revisiting my notes and considering my past commanders, I eventually recognized this as a false dichotomy and began to consider a number of

ideas that adequately capture the nuances and importance of both, finally landing on: Thrive To Prevail.

When I explain this philosophy to the squadron, I start with the end—to prevail. This is why we are here; why we put on the uniform every day. It is the burden we swore to carry on our neighbor’s behalf—that, when called upon, we will defend our nation and the interests of freedom around the globe. As Gen. David Goldfein, Chief of Staff of the Air Force and Chief Master Sgt. Kaleth Wright, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force conveyed in their first Chief’s Notice to Airmen, “the Air Force exists to fight and win our Nation’s

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— All of the work put in by Team Schriever Airmen in 2019 paved the way for new advancements in the continuously evolving space and cyberspace warfighting domains.

To start off the year, three members of the 2nd Space Operations Squadron GPS Warfighter Collaboration Cell collaborated with USA Space and Missile Defense Command’s Army Space Training Integration to build training smart books in January for Army Brigade Combat Teams prior to deployment.

The members met with an FA-40 from USASMDC to build a smart book with standardized GWCC products to include spike charts, which will be provided to the Army’s three Combat Training Centers to be used in the preparation for deployment to combat zones.

“By providing these products for use in training the BCTs, we hope to make more warfighters aware of the support we can provide and the avenues to request our support,” said 1st Lt. Savanna Whitaker, 2nd SOPS GWCC deputy director, one of the lead mission analysts for the GWCC. In February, the 50th Space Wing sent 11 members from 4th SOPS and 50th Operations Support Squadron on a temporary duty assignment to the Wideband Satellite Operation Center at Fort Detrick, Md. The Airmen spent two days at the WSOC talking to various operators from Alpha Co., 53rd Signals Battalion. The 50th OSS’s goal in the visit was to improve their processes in supporting Alpha Co. through intelligence product distribution and threat overviews.

“The impact was great for Alpha Co. to see and hear from 50th OSS Intel, give them a better understanding of the intelligence available to support and assist with their daily operations through intelligence product distribution and increase their knowledge on current and future threats to space operations,” said Senior Airmen Devin Vega, 50th OSS intelligence analyst.

in the Advanced Rendezvous Proximity Operations course in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The course changes and expands the approach to achieving space situational awareness among satellites and builds on the knowledge 3rd SES Airmen learn during initial technical training.

“It’s really the next step in the process of evolving and innovating space operations,” said Capt. Logan Burch, 3rd SES operations support flight commander.

To kick off May, the 4th SOPS accepted control of a new satellite in their constellation, Advanced Extremely High Frequency-4 from the Space and Missile Systems Center and 14th Air Force in a satellite control authority ceremony here.

During the ceremony, the SMC approved AEHF-4 as being ready for operations, handing control to the 14th AF, who delegated control to the 50th Space Wing, then to the 50th Operations Group and finally to the 4th SOPS. “The addition of this satellite to the protected communications constellation further promotes Schriever and America as being the masters of space,” 1st Lt. Scott Podlogar, 4th SOPS satellite engineer, said.

During the summer, Gen. Jay Raymond, United States Space Command commander, hosted an all-call as part of the command’s space warfighting road show July 29 at the base fitness center.

Hundreds of 50th Space Wing personnel and mission partners, such as the National Space Defense Center, participated in the discussion that highlighted the growing importance of the base’s missions.

“Space is critical to everyday life,” Raymond said. “It’s vital to our national security, and our adversaries know this.

You are multi-domain leaders of the future.

We need to compete, deter and win.”

On the same day as the all-call, Lockheed Martin presented the 2nd Space Operations Squadron with a GPS Block III model satellite to celebrate the successful on-orbit testing of the new GPS III satellite here.

Capt. Kaoru Elliot, 2nd SOPS assistant director of operations, said it is important to stay at the forefront of the space mission.

“With the introduction of the GPS III, the advanced capabilities onboard the satellite will ensure we continue to provide the best for our civilian users and bring new capabilities to warfighters to operate through the contested environment,” he said. “The 2nd SOPS and GPS are the global gold standard for all Global Navigation Systems.”

“It was awesome,” he said. “I was here working in 1st Space Operations Squadron back in 1999 sending commands to SVN-38. That was 20 years ago and on a much older operational system. In March, I am ending my Air Force career and it’s kind of cool to complete this SVN’s Air Force career too. It means a lot.”

Also in October, the Cyber Defense Correlation Cell for Space stood up here, and will operate at the enterprise level by detecting and responding to cyber threats against Air Force Space Command mission systems.

The CDCC-S is the first of its kind in the Air Force and has more than 50 civilian and military personnel working alongside 30 contractors.

“Our cyber defenses must be better today than they were yesterday and better tomorrow than they are today, and that pattern must continue indefinitely,” said Maj. Gen. Stephen Whiting, 14th Air Force commander. “Our space systems will be safer, and in the end, the work you do here today will keep America and our allies safer as well.”

In November, the 50th Operations Support Squadron began its largest class to train 64 space operators. The course is expected to send Airmen to the 2nd SOPS and the 4th SOPS upon their graduation April 15, 2020.

This is in response to the new officer undergraduate space training and enlisted space training courses being taught at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

“The new course will provide a baselevel foundation for space operators,” Master Sgt. Carl White, 50th Operations Support Squadron operations support flight chief said. “The course is constantly evolving alongside our mission to ensure we can better meet the needs of the Air Force.”

All of these achievements will continue to pave the way for future advancements in space operations, ensuring the United States stays at the forefront of space and cyberspace warfighting realms.

“The scope, scale and complexity of today’s threat is real and it is concerning,” Raymond said. “The establishment of a combatant command solely focused on the space domain demonstrates the United States’ commitment to protecting and defending its space assets against that threat.”

At the beginning of autumn, the 4th SOPS officially gained command of the Enhanced Polar System satellite.

EPS adds two satellites to 4th SOPS, increasing the squadron’s arsenal to 25 satellites.

“This is an amazing accomplishment and shows how our squadron has been able to adapt and overcome the many obstacles presented by space,” said Lt. Col. Timothy Ryan, 4th Space Operations Squadron commander.

“Our operators work tirelessly around the clock to ensure the United States maintains space superiority.”

In October, the 2nd SOPS decommissioned Satellite Vehicle Number 38, after 22 years, design life of 7.5, to give way to the next generation of GPS III satellites.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In 2019, Team Schriever placed emphasis on maintaining a close relationship between the installation and the local community.

The Child Development Center partnered with the National Defense Industrial Association to bring science, technology, engineering and mathematics projects to elementary-age children, encouraging space-related studies at an earlier age.

According to the NDIA factsheet, the organization drives strategic dialogue in national security, identifying key issues and leveraging the knowledge and experience of its military, government, industry, and academic members to address them.

Tom Taylor, NDIA Rocky Mountain Chapter vice president of workforce development, who visited the CDC, emphasized the importance of the relationship between Team Schriever’s CDC and the NDIA. “The future depends on the early education of children. We can’t wait to introduce them to the importance of science, technology, engineering and math curriculums when they’re in high school,” Taylor said.

“We need to put more focus on elementary and middleschool STEM courses.”

Schriever’s CDC leadership also highlighted the benefit of collaborating with an organization in local community in support of children who are enrolled in the CDC’s school-age care program.

“STEM is a required curriculum within our program,” said Mary Barkley, 50th Force Support Squadron Child and Youth Services flight chief. “We researched outside resources and liked what the NDIA had to offer.

Children respond better to hands-on activities when introducing new skills, and Tom’s program fit right into what we were looking for.”

APRIL

More than 50 Colorado Springs community leaders met with installation leaders during the annual State of the Base.

State of the Base provides Schriever leaders the opportunity to bolster partnerships with Colorado Springs, El Paso County and state civic and community leaders and emphasize the theme of growth, expansion and partnership.

The event also provided base leadership the opportunity to introduce the newest members of wing leadershipyah and Col. Dean Sniegowski, 310th Space Wing commander and Army Col. Edward Anderson, National Space Defense Center deputy director, giving them the opportunity to brief community leaders on their respective mission areas as well.

Sniegowski discussed the relationship between the 50th SW and 310th SW, and how the community plays a role for the citizen Airmen of the 310th SW. “Twenty percent of our reserve Airmen are fulltime but the other 80 percent are probably working for your companies,” Sniegowski said. “In fact, one of our Airmen is one of your companies.”

He went on to extend appreciation for the contribution of the community in support of the citizen Airmen.

“You allow them to continue to wear their uniform and serve their country. I want to thank you for that,” he said.

JUNE

Denver Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay visited with Team Schriever to learn about the base and show his support for men and women in the armed forces and talk about his path to the NFL. “Hard work is something you can’t run from,” he said. “You work hard or you don’t. Everybody wants something, but you will never get to something if you aren’t willing to work for it. It could take time — days, weeks, months or even years, but if you have the drive, it will almost certainly pay off. You just have to be patient.”

During his visit, Lindsay sent a command to a satellite, communicate with deployed assets via a military satellite communication system and train with Security Forces in a crisis response simulator.

“I’m grateful for our troops,” Lindsay said. “We would not have this beautiful country without them, and I definitely wouldn’t be able to play football. It means a lot for me to come out here; you guys put your lives on the line for people like me, and I’m thankful.”

AUGUST

The base hosted Todd Hennessay, Colorado Holocaust Educators director and educator, to give a presentation during Days of Remembrance to share the history of the Holocaust and the work happening to record the accounts of survivors to preserve the information for future generations.

Hennessay said more historical evidence has surfaced in the last five years than in the previous 45 years.

“The Greatest Generation is passing on and a lot of service members from that time collected photographs and documented meeting survivors, or in some cases perpetrators, and when they came home all of that would go into a box,” he said.

Col. James Smith, 50th Space Wing commander, also provided remarks during the event stressing the importance of recalling the tragic event, the victims and those who fought against Nazi persecution.

“Today’s event helps us to remember not only the oppressed, but also those who ultimately helped with the liberation of the concentration camps, and the defeat of tyranny,” Smith said.

Smith left those in attendance with a question to think on as they walked through the displays on hand: “How are you working to connect with the Airmen around you and respect those who may be different from you?”

In mid-August, 18 Airmen from the 50th Operations Support Squadron donated blood in response to mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. Second Lt. Charles Cooper, 50th OSS student, organized the event, and said each Airman donated a pint of blood to support the victims of the shootings.

“Donating blood is a pretty selfless act,” he said. “The fact we had 18 people came out on such short notice really shows our Airmen embody ‘service before self.’”

Airman 1st Class Sophia Carbajal, 50th OSS student, was one of the 18 Airmen who donated blood and welcomed the opportunity.

“There’s been a high demand for blood donations and with everything going on, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to give back to the community,” Carbajal said.

“Schriever showcased the base’s mission, vision and priorities in more than

130 civic meetings, community events and tours.”

OCTOBER

The Schriever Fire Department sent two firefighters and a vehicle to combat the Blaney Road fire approximately five miles northwest of the base to provide support to the El Paso County fire suppression efforts. continued page 7 | CONNECTING

Also in October, approximately 30 Schriever Airmen volunteered to help military veterans during the 21st annual Homeless Veteran Stand Down at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium.

Lt. Col. Michael Schriever, 2nd Space Operations Squadron director of operations and military assistance coordinator for El Paso County Homeless Veteran Coalition, said Schriever Air Force Base has supported the coalition since 2008.

“There are multiple things our coalition works toward,” Schriever said. “Throughout the year, we offer outreach to homeless veterans or support for veterans who may be headed for homelessness. We receive a couple of grants, and we receive assistance requests from other organizations.”

Events such as Homeless Veteran Stand Down provide local service members a chance to connect with their local community.

“Having the footprint of our Airmen at the event shows our willingness to be in the community and show how much we care,” Schriever said. “Service to your country is honorable and a great thing to do, but service to your fellow person is just as honorable and important.”

NOVEMBER

Schriever Airmen played a role in the annual Colorado Springs Veterans Day Parade in Colorado Springs, Colo. and wing leadership provided support as the Ellicott community honored Veterans Day in an assembly at Ellicott High School Nov. 12.

Additionally during 2019, Schriever members supported sporting event festivities by volunteering, throwing out the first pitches and singing the national anthem for the Rocky Mountain Vibes, who held several Military Appreciation Nights and demonstrated their commitment to community support through volunteer opportunities such as creating care packages for deployed Airmen and the annual Angel Tree program supporting base and Ellicott families in need.

Schriever showcased the base’s mission, vision and priorities in more than 130 civic meetings, community events and tours.

Through these events, relationships between the base and local community were bolstered, and a way forward for future partnerships was sought as both communities supported each other.

As Team Schriever moves into 2020, it will continue to be dedicated to connecting with the community by hosting annual events like the State of the Base, refining the Ellicott community relationship, and seeking more ways to take part in the community.

4th SOPS wins decade’s final

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Team Schriever athletes boasted their athletic prowess throughout the year in numerous competitions.

Commander’s Cup 2019

More than 15 events, consisting of team sports and individual events, highlighted the 2018-19 season of sports at Schriever Air Force Base.

While 50th Operations Support Squadron ran away with the cup in 2018, 4th Space Operations Squadron nabbed the crown in 2019 after finishing second the year prior.

Though 4th SOPS finished as runners-up in three of the four intramural events, they still earned 20 more points than the next closest team, 50th OSS. Here are the top-five finishers from 2019 Commander’s Cup: 1) 4th Space Operations, 1,315 points 2) 50th Operation Support Squadron, 1,295 points 3) 2nd Space Operations, 1,175 points 4) 50th Security Forces Squadron 1,015 points 5) 1st Space Operations, 945 points

Fitness center events

This year the fitness center held 12 events for Schriever athletes with the Lazyman Triathlon fielding the most teams. The event, which participants ran 26.2 miles, swam 2.4 miles and rode 112 miles on a bike, had 33 teams compete.

The triathlon, which took place in February, had two members of 19th SOPS place first and second place. Master Sgt. Peter Aronson, 14th Test Squadron superintendent, finished first in the event and gained 50 points while 19th SOPS Capt. Lauren Levy earned 40 points for her second-place finish.

Aronson also finished first last year and broke the previous record with his time of 19 hours, 45 minutes. Lt. Col. James Hogan, 7th Space Operations Squadron commander, placed third to earn 30 points.

Since weather in February is frigid, participants could complete the event in the fitness center or off base at another gym.

This was just his second time competing in

the event. When Aronson did the Lazyman Triathlon in 2018, it was his first time doing so. In his numerous years of training, though, he’s developed a sharp focus to help accomplish his goals.

“Over time, I’ve developed a ‘never give up’ mentality,” Aronson said. “Most endurance runners will agree that training will only take you so far. You will eventually hit the wall and want to quit. You will need to find a way to push through that barrier and keep going until you finish what you intended to do.”

“I’ve failed enough to know what works for me,” he said. “I’ve learned pain is temporary, but quitting is permanent. I try to incorporate that theme everywhere in my life.”

Intramurals

Despite having a stellar season in intramurals and making it to three of four championships, 4th SOPS took home second in all their trips to the title game.

In basketball, 4th SOPS was bested by the 50th Space Wing, in softball, 1st SOPS earned the win and in flag football, 50th OSS took home the crown.

The 14-7 victory against 4th SOPS paved the way for 1st SOPS to three-peat as champions and end the decade with the crown in flag football.

On the diamond, however, 1st SOPS earned a convincing 16-3 victory over 4th SOPS to capture the softball title.

The 50th Space Wing’s only title of 2019 came in basketball. They upended 4th SOPS in the championship game to walk away with first place.

In volleyball, 2nd SOPS took two out of three sets to earn the victory for the title and mounted a fierce comeback. They lost the set 25-20 to tie the match at one set apiece, but that put them in the right head space to win the match.

“We were down in the second match 110, and I just kept telling our team to keep battling, make a run and gain momentum and confidence,” said Korey Kuykendall, 2nd SOPS resource advisor. “We ended up coming back to lose 25-20, but we took that momentum into the third game and jumped out to an 8-3 lead.”

1st female Thunderbird pilot inspires Schriever By 2nd Lt. Idalí Beltré Acevedo 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Retired Col. Nicole Malachowski, the first female Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Team pilot, visited Schriever Air Force Base on Dec. 19.

Malachowski shared lunch with Airmen, toured the 2nd and 4th Space Operations Squadrons, and offered a keynote address to more than 110 Airmen. She shared her message of resurgence following medical challenges.

“[After] a crucible, you come out different; your old self doesn’t exist anymore.”

Malachowski said this was the first time she visited an Air Force base to tell her story since being medically retired due to tick borne illness almost three years ago.

“I want you to know that if I could still be in the Air Force, serving alongside you, wearing this uniform, this is where I would want to be,” she said. “Thank you for welcoming me and letting me be here.”

Malachowski explained how past adversities afforded her a new-found perspective and helped her discover an inner strength she didn’t know she had.

“This was my purpose all along,” she said. “The Air Force gave me the skills I needed to make this happen. All along I wanted to fly fighters and my biggest contribution has to do with something completely different.”

After a detailed account of her medical journey, she shared how she struggled emotionally after her medical retirement from the Air Force. Today, though, Malachowski is thankful for her experiences and said they transformed her by giving her clarity on what gives her life meaning.

“It’s not the Air Force, it’s not the uniform, it’s not my position, it’s not being a fighter pilot, it is this,” she said, pointing to a photo of her and her family.

Though Malachowski spoke about personal challenges and her path to finding her purpose, her overall message supported her experiences with three main ideas.

Resilience

“Resilience is great, resilience is tactical,” she said.

“Resilience is when you make a mistake and you come back into work the next day with your chin up high and try again. It’s when you have a failure and you think, ‘That’s OK, failure is the path to victory, failure is how I grow,’’’ she said.

Resurgence

According to Malachowski, sometimes being resilient may not be enough. “[When you] go through major challenges and burdens, you are going to be broken at times, like I was,” she said.

“[After] a crucible, you come out different; your old self doesn’t exist anymore. There is no resilience because there is no bouncing back to your old self. You are new, stronger and better, that’s resurgence.”

Reinvention

Malachowski said the third stage of transformation is reinvention, which is about taking the next step and seeking a new purpose in life.

“I have reinvented myself,” she said. “I have a new identity, a new mission, a new purpose. Every single one of you has continued page 11 | THUNDERBIRD

be able to out think, out maneuver, and defeat their challenges—we must prevail.

Defeat of an adversary is not a foregone conclusion.

In our philosophy, we acknowledge that “prevail” depends greatly on our ability as leaders and teammates to foster an environment of professional and personal growth and vitality—where we can thrive.

Professionally, we need to enable our teammates to master their craft, to become, as Robert Heinlein writes in Starship Troopers, “dangerous people…dangerous—to the enemy.” This means training to failure, implementing lessons learned and getting back at it again—we have to get reps. Additionally, we are called to deliberately develop teammates for the future challenges that come with increased responsibility or rank.

This can be accomplished through formal feedback and mentoring, dedicated time in safe spaces to discuss and wrestle with controversial and challenging ideas and opportunities that force personnel beyond their comfort zone.

Professional growth isn’t enough, though. We must also cultivate a culture that values our teammates on a personal level—one that encourages authenticity, reinforces family life and gives purpose. In a recent officer professional development session our company grade officers juxtaposed a toxic environment that inhibits growth with a thriving environment that nurtures growth. Conversely, thriving includes communication, opportunity, forgiveness, transparency, community, connection, empathy, caring, seeing, empowerment and constructive discipline.

Schriever Airmen describe life as shift workers

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — While most Schriever Airmen arrive at the Enoch and Irwin gates before their 7:30 a.m. duty day, there are always a few cars headed in the opposite direction.

First Lt. Sergio Baez, 4th Space Operations Squadron crew commander of charlie crew and mid shift worker, is among those leaving as others arrive.

“A typical work day for me starts about 30-45 minutes before we changeover with the off-going crew,” Baez said.

“Even though fewer people are on base at night, ops tempo doesn’t slow down;

night shift is held to the same standards as day shift.”

“I get a detailed turnover from my counterpart’s mission plan of my shift, get a sense for the ops tempo for the day, and set up a timeline of activities we have going on.”

It’s critical for Baez to piece together this information to ensure his team is informed and prepared for the “day.”

“It’s important that everyone knows what’s going on with the other crew positions so that we can make informed and effective decisions to both prevent things from going wrong and to act quickly, decisively, and correctly when things do,” Baez said.

Their work resembles a game plan in sports; Baez makes sure to get everyone on the same page to execute the strategy, then, they set out and accomplish the tasks.

Senior Airman Jonathan Wilt, who now works 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the training section at the Cyber Defense Correlation Cell for Space or CDCC-S, previously worked the night shift in the same position and preparation for his shift began well before he arrived on base.

“To get prepared while I was on shift work, I’d make sure I’d have all my errands done the day prior to me working,” Wilt said. “It’s more difficult to find time to do tasks, such as grocery shopping or laundry. While on shift, I’d wake up at 5 a.m. to get ready for work and would get home at about 7:30 p.m. Now that I’m on day shift, I wake up at 5:30 a.m. and get home around 5 p.m. so I can be more flexible with my time management.”

Wilt said working nights had challenges as well. Even though fewer people are on base at night, ops tempo doesn’t slow down; night shift is held to the same standards as day shift.

First Lt. Sergio Baez explains the importance of providing protected military satellite communications to warfighters across the globe during his morning shift. Baez previously worked the midshift for 4th Space Operations Squadron and said he has to make numerous adjustments to his sleep schedule, kids and work-life balance when he transitioned to the morning shift.

“The biggest drawback for night shift for me is actually falling asleep during the day and getting proper rest,” Wilt said. “It’s easy to mess up your sleep cycle and it’s hard to spend time with others because the majority of the world is asleep while you’re awake.”

Though both Baez and Wilt are happy to support the mission as needed, both are happy to have “normal hours.”

For Baez, he’s happy to spend that time with his family.

“Being on mid-shift is a nice break from the hectic activities of day shift,” Baez said. “But as a family man, I am excited to get back onto day shift to spend more time with my family. It will also be nice to interact with some of the more technical aspects of the job as most engineering support and squadron leadership are on a day-shift schedule.”

Returning to a morning routine, however, comes with several challenges. Baez said he attempts to adjust to the change as swiftly as possible since it’s a tough process.

“Transitioning from mid (shift) to day is probably the hardest to do,” Baez said. “I take a quick nap after the shift and then try to stay awake through the rest of the day as much as possible. My family helps a lot with keeping me awake, especially my kids.”

Shift changes don’t just affect Baez’s home life and sleep schedule, it also impacts errands he’d normally do prior to work.

Airmen who work mid or night shift have more time to sleep in as well as create appointments, time for the gym and other tasks outside of work. That changes with an expectation to arrive at work earlier.

“When I work mids, I make my appointments early in the morning so I can knock them out right when I get off work,” Baez said. “I also want to spend as much time with my family as possible, so I try to adjust my sleep schedule to make sure I give them the time they deserve.”

During her reinvention process, Malachowski asked herself the following question to realize what she wanted to do in her life: what do I miss?

“I miss being with people,” she said. “I have to have a job where I am with people, sharing authentically our stories. That’s how I reinvented myself.”

Malachowski shared her thoughts on the importance of finding meaning and purpose in life and offered an analogy that connects her teachings on mindfulness and surpassing adversity with the Air Force values.

“Integrity first, service before self, excellence in all you do, it all starts with maintaining integrity to yourself,” she said. “What gives your life meaning? Can you answer that? I gave you a picture of mine. Maybe it’s family, maybe it’s your kids, maybe it’s a hobby, a church or community organization. In my re-invention I needed to be with people.”

Jessica Ditson, 50th Space Wing violence prevention integrator, said Malachowski’s message was impactful and helpful to her as she plans to implement those tools to her life.

struggle with Lyme disease as a catalyst to grow and change while keeping in mind who she was at her core and staying true to her life’s purpose,” she said. “I think getting clear on your purpose can be so freeing; like Colonel Malachowski said, it gives you a solid place to make informed decisions on when a ‘no’ is the right answer, allowing you to hold space and time

for your true purpose.”

In the same line of thought, Chief Master Sgt. Steven Whitworth, 50th Operations Group superintendent, said he had some great takeaways from Malachowski’s keynote address.

“I think it’s important to know your why and why you prioritize things the way you do, especially when you are try-

ing to practice mindfulness, resiliency, etc.” he said. “If you don’t know why you are doing what you are doing and you don’t know what your priorities are I think you will probably be lost.”

Col. Hewett Wells, 50th Network Operations commander, found Malachowski’s life testimony inspiring and admired her dedication to the tick borne illness cause.

“Colonel Malachowski is an incredible demonstration of grit, determination and perseverance in the face of a debilitating illness,” he said. “Someone who had the skills and tools to be resilient and through resurgence and reinvention found new meaning and purpose for her life. I found her commitment to research and education on tick-borne illness informative and inspiring.”

Malachowski reminded the audience to take time to fully know themselves and spend their time wisely while keeping true to their purpose.

“You know what my illness taught me?,” she said. “I say no a lot and I love it. I have clarity of purpose. I say yes to things I want to be at and yes to things I care about and that’s why I am here with you today. It’s all about integrity and maintaining fidelity to the whole; if you don’t know what your whole is or know who you are, you won’t be able to bring your best to work, for everybody else and the mission that’s depending on you.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — With a goal of recognizing and raising awareness of Airmen who stand watch 24/7, 365 days a year, Gen. David L. Goldfein, Air Force Chief of Staff, visited Airmen here, Jan. 3 as part of his Standing Watch Tour.

During his visit, Goldfein visited various work spaces on base where Team Schriever members work year-round to ensure mission success.

“America sleeps well at night because you don’t,” Goldfein said. “With you standing watch 24/7, we feel safe and secure. Your work is critical to our national security interests.”

One of his goals for the tour is to encourage Airmen connection for increased resilience and readiness.

“Take care of each other,” he said. “Readiness is first and foremost about Airmen and their families.”

Additionally, Goldfein recognized the proud history of the base and the long-standing record of providing “the best space capabilities in the world.”

“The American way of life depends on space, it depends on you,” he said. “You are the multi-functional, space-minded operators our nation depends on to defend our national security in and through space. As part of the new, independent Space Force, you’ll maintain that competitive edge and adapt to new challenges. It’s an exciting time,” he said.

Goldfein also visited Joint Base Andrews, Scott Air Force Base, Minot Air Force Base, and Joint Base San Antonio during the tour.

Connection with others helps improve resilience

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — New and seasoned members of the military community alike know it can be tough to stay connected to friends and family.

Jessica Ditson, 50th Space Wing violence prevention integrator, said staying connected and communicating with others is important to maintaining positive mental and physical health, and helps increase resilience.

Maintaining connections with loved ones is something service members, and their families, have valued since before the American Revolution.

James Mesco, 50th Space Wing historian, said before social media, email, video chat, etc., oldfashioned letter writing was a major morale boost that helped keep the spirits of American service members high. In fact, mail was so important it became subject to adversarial military tactics.

Though communication methods and availability have changed throughout military history, the need for Airmen to feel connected to those back home remains the same. Whether Airmen are deployed or assigned somewhere far from home, it’s important they know there are many ways to stay connected to loved ones while they are apart. Here are a few suggestions:

Leverage technology One benefit of current technology is it allows people who are geographically separated to connect in real time. Consider using social media or video chat to connect with distant loved ones.

Focus on helping someone else

When Airmen can’t be with family, another way they can connect with others is by volunteering in their local communities.

Ditson said volunteering not only helps fight depression and loneliness, but it also provides opportunities to meet new people.

“When you investigate volunteer opportunities, take time to intentionally consider how you’d like to spend your time,” said Ditson. “If you are passionate about animals, consider helping out at an animal shelter; if you are an avid reader, perhaps you’d enjoy reading aloud to people in retirement communities or hospitals.”

Think outside the date

Being part of the military community often requires flexibility. Airmen apart from friends and family can consider rescheduling certain holidays or traditions to days and times that work best for them.

“One year, while I was deployed during the holidays, our family left our Christmas tree up until March,” said Master Sgt.
