Combat human trafficking:

STAY ALERT, AWARE

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Human trafficking can take on many forms, and according to the United Nations, human trafficking affects every country in the world.

Cecilia Smith, 50th Space Wing Sexual Assault Prevention and Response office sexual assault response coordinator, is also the representative for Combating Trafficking in Persons at Schriever.

“Human trafficking destroys lives and it poses a threat to national security,” she said. “Everyone needs to be educated to stop it.

We need to focus on awareness so people realize it’s not just an overseas issue; it’s in [our] own backyard.”

According to the 2019 Trafficking in Persons Report, advocates report a growing trend of criminals using online social media platforms to recruit and advertise targets.

Smith said this is especially dangerous for children who can’t comprehend the threat.

“Nowadays, everyone’s a friend,” she said. “There are so many children online who get friend requests and likes from strangers. In their eyes, there’s nothing wrong with that.”

To combat this, Smith advises parents to stay involved with their children’s social media activity and take any changes in behavior or warning signs seriously.

“There are indicators to watch for, such as individuals who are avoiding eye contact, aren’t speaking out, don’t know where they are or where their personal items are such as ID’s, passports, etc. and who can’t seem to go off on their own,” she said.

Special Agent Michael Franklin, Air Force Office of Special Investigations Detachment 807, advises Airmen to report anything that shows warning signs of human trafficking.

“Just because [indicators] are present doesn’t automatically mean human trafficking is happening,” he said. “But if you see a cluster of indicators, it might not be a coincidence. Report anything that looks suspicious, determining if it’s credible or not is our job.

Whether or not anything comes out of [the allegation] is based on the facts of the investigation.”

CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — As the new inspector general at Schriever Air Force Base serving with the best IG team and space wing in the world, one of the first orders of business was setting expectations.

I expect people to be good servants to our taxpayers by showing up to work, doing good work and having a good attitude!

To be clear and detailed about expectations, I like to emphasize the following overarching expectations: respect, responsibility and reputation.

The three Rs! They are easy to remember and are a solid foundation to establish expectations within an organization.

However, it is a two way street. I like to ensure troops understand what they can expect from me as well. It is very important to show transparency to prevent confusion and build trust so that we can execute this important mission as a team!

Below are examples of what can fall under the three Rs (this is not all encompassing) and what troops can expect of me.

Responsibility • Put deserving people in for awards at every opportunity.

• Produce high quality work; take the time to check it before distribution.

• Put thought into communication; aim to make it simple, clear, precise and concise.

• Get required work done on time.

• Abide by and maintain standards.

• Show up to events/activities.

• Prevent a DUI by having a designated driver or use a ride share app.

• Maintain fitness and strive to never fail a fitness test.

Reputation • Be polite, courteous and professional

both in and out of uniform.

• Social media; think before you post.

Anything you say on social media has potential for consequences.

What You Can Expect of Me: • I will support personal improvement/ learning/growth.

• I will make every effort to make timely decisions.

• Whenever possible, I will explain to you why tasks need to be accomplished.

• I will provide honest, formal feedback.

• I will be present.

• I will regularly acknowledge communication you send specifically to me.

• I will not tolerate discrimination, intimidation or abuse of any kind.

• I will not tolerate anyone not maintaining standards.

Knowing what is expected is essential from day one to avoid second guessing and wasting time or effort. My hope is that sharing this concept can be a tool in someone’s leadership/followership toolbox.

Paws for the cause

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Therapy dogs will visit with Schriever Airmen the first Tuesday of every month outside of the Building 300 auditorium during lunch hours.

The Violence Prevention Office organized the program to increase Airman resilience.

“We wanted to start pet breaks because we know people work in high stress environments and have limited exposure to going outside or taking a break,” said Jessica Ditson, 50th Space Wing violence prevention integrator. “Taking a break can be really helpful for your mental well-being.”

“They know their job is to help people

and sometimes they start sharing things about their past. We’re building a connection culture here, and who would’ve thought it’d start with dogs.”

Anyone with access to the installation is encouraged to visit the dog. During the last visit, Ditson estimates Keeper made more than 250 contacts with Airmen.

“It stops mattering what pay grade you are, what job you have and it starts being about human beings sharing a common love for a certain animal,” she said.

Building stronger connections among Airmen can lead to stronger working relationships and teams who are better able to execute mission success.

“When the day is stressful and it seems your todo list is longer than your arm, being able to stop to pet a dog can sometimes be the break you need,” she said.

Airman 1st Class Sophia Carbajal, 4th Space Operations Squadron advanced extremely high frequency mission control sub-systems operator, has three dogs; two mutts and a German Shepard back home with her family.

“Many times people stay secluded and miss out on building relationships outside of their squadron,” she said. “Events like these are really beneficial in establishing an environment where Airmen can network and take a break from their daily routine.”

In the Peterson AFB dorms where some Schriever Airmen live, pets are not allowed.

“This is a way to de-stress from the challenges that come with being in the dorms,” she said. “Dorm residents are new in their Air Force career and we sometimes struggle with being away from home and family. Bringing out dogs for Airmen who haven’t seen their pets can boost morale by making us feel at home.”

Ditson works with the Hope Animal Assisted Crisis Response to bring the dogs to the base.

“The dogs are trained to comfort first responders, children, people in hospitals, etc.,” Ditson said.

“They know their job is to help people calm down, find center, find a smile and take a quick break.”

Ditson obtained leadership approval to secure a dog full time. The dog would have a primary handler who would take the dog home at night, and a secondary handler to watch the dog when the primary handler cannot. This process would take 14-18 months to properly train the dog and handler.

“When people stop by for a pet-break, they usually come with someone else,” Ditson said. “This will often spark a conversation between the attendees,

Sayler earns fourth bench, deadlift title; Wood wins first

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Team Schriever Airmen tested their might at the Schriever Air Force Base Fitness Center during the annual bench press and deadlift competition Jan. 24.

Staff Sgt. Ian Sayler, 1st Space Operations Squadron, placed first overall out of nine men and Rachel Wood, 50th Force Support Squadron, earned the crown against one other woman.

The top three in each event earned a gift card for their performances.

Sayler first won the overall title in 2017 and hasn’t lost since.

He benched 315 pounds and deadlifted 495 and earned 4.475 points, just .083 points ahead of Marcel Cloutier, 2nd SOPS. “It is always a good feeling to be considered among the elite lifters on base,” Sayler said. “The beauty of lifting is that the true competition is the internal struggle and overcoming the mental battle of moving such heavy weight.”

Sayler didn’t put up the most weight in bench or deadlift (he took first place based on the competition’s bodyweightto-lift ratio criteria) but watching other competitors outlift him didn’t affect his abilities.

“The other competitor’s weights don’t carry much value in my mind while I prepare,” Sayler said. “The environment was not competitive, but more so uplifting amongst the competitors. I want them to succeed just as much as I do.

You want to see the best effort out of everyone, so you know you are bringing it all as well.”

That atmosphere is why he continues to thrive in the weight room. Sayler said it helps him clear his mind.

“I find lifting weights to be the number one stress reliever for me, so it’s not hard for me to find time to get in the gym,” he said. “As a single parent, I find that the frustrations of daily life can be hard to manage. The weight room is really my ‘escape’ from reality. It’s a chance to blow off some steam and ground myself mentally for the struggles I am sure to encounter.”

Meanwhile, Wood, who competed for the first time, benched 85 pounds and deadlifted 175.

“My weight training is designed for sport performance, so I don’t normally max lift,” Wood said. “I just joined to see what I could accomplish in these particular lifts.”

The next competition, the Lazyman Triathlon, will begin Saturday and go through February. The competition includes a 26.2-mile run, 112-mile bike ride and 77-mile swim, all to be completed by the end of the month.

The class will focus on learning the Yang Family 108 long form along with the martial application and energetics for each movement.

Schriever command chief hosts all call

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The wing’s senior enlisted leader engaged 50th Space Wing Airmen about the state of the wing, future operations and quality of life initiatives during an all call here Jan. 23.

The call came at a pivotal time for the wing, which performs the majority of space operations for the Department of Defense and is assigned to the newly-established United States Space Force. “[Submarines], fighters and bombers are all great, but they are lethal and devastating when paired with what we’re doing from this base,” said Chief Master Sgt. Boston Alexander, 50th Space Wing command chief.

The chief encouraged Airmen to keep a champion mindset and stay focused on visualizing victory — over, under, through or around any obstacles that may get in the way.

“Champions fight for worthy causes; champions are a voice for the voiceless; champions use their given talents to elevate others,” he said. “We pray for peace, but we’re ready for war.”

Alexander talked about conflicts over time, and how the capabilities 50th SW

Airmen project help shape the outcome and the victories of those conflicts, both from the air and from beneath the ocean’s surface via precision-guided munitions and military satellite communications.

“The greatest air and space power creates multiple dilemmas for the adversary,” he said. “We have the ability to project decisive effects from space, across all domains.”

He explained the importance of visualizing victory through adversity, and shared his personal grief of losing his mother and grandfather within 90 days of one another — two of the most important people in his life.

The chief told Airmen to consistently find ways to be champions, even if that means going around the dilemma they’re facing.

“Life can be a bully,” he said. “What are you grappling

with today? Are you so focused on the closed doors that you can’t see the open ones? What personal or professional traffic jams are you in right now? Visualize victory; find your way to it — over, under, through or around.”

Airmen asked questions of Alexander, as well as senior enlisted leaders from across the installation. The questions ranged from mission to quality of life issues, and how to increase morale and be better wingmen.

“Look to your left and to your right,” said Chief Master Sgt. Steven Whitworth, 50th Operations Group superintendent.

“We have the ability to create more synergy because of our size — learn why the person on your left and your right joined and why they stayed.”

All the enlisted leaders agreed that care, compassion and connection are what keep the heart beating for the wing, and all the Airmen who serve in it.

The overarching theme of questions was how the establishment of U.S. Space Force will affect Schriever and its operations. “[We] will still touch every instrument of national power,” Alexander said. “We have the opportunity to write the pages of history today. In 20 or 30 years, will your children — your grandchildren — still be able to say ‘we are the absolute best at what we do, and our adversaries know it?’”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 25th Space Range Squadron, a mission partner located at Schriever Air Force Base and falls under Air Combat Command’s Nevada Test and Training Range at Nellis AFB, Nevada, recently was recently named one of ACC’s winners of the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.

The unit provides a space electronic warfare range for developing lethal, agile and resilient joint warfighters.

“With the space range experience we provide, our warfighters are going to

succeed against any adversary, any time.”

“We give customers a safe and secure environment to conduct satellite communication jamming and aid them in training how to fight through a contested environment,” said Lt. Col. Jason Powell, 25th SRS commander.

The 25th SRS’ service to the nation began June 13, 1917, when it was activated as the 20th Aero Squadron.

It was formally changed to the 25th Aero Squadron June 22, 1917. During this time, the unit was responsible for flying British-made SE-5 aircraft and participated in combat operations during the Meuse-Argonne Campaign in World War I. “The 25th has evolved over 100 years of existence from direct combat in World War I to more of a combat support role in today’s incarnation,” said Maj. Joshua Vaccaro, 25th SRS director of operations.

The live fixed range capability allows the unit to host multiple mission partners and support within the continental United States. The live deployable range brings the range capability into their mission partners’ backyard to support mission partners ‘training where they fight’. The range’s closed loop environment is a “range in a box” that can be driven to a customer’s location and connected, providing a customer-specific, adversary with highly threat-representative targets to promote high-end training in a low-risk environment.

“Today, through our capabilities, we [25th SRS] strive to live up to the legacy of excellence by using our various range skillsets to train jammingsavvy warfighters,” Vaccaro said.

Because their mission partners and customers span the globe, the 25th SRS’s operators, maintainers, intelligence and communication Airmen are often sent overseas to regionals commands to support mission needs.

“As part of the 25th, I’ve been to Hawaii, Germany and all over the U.S. supporting our customers and training them to fight through satellite jamming environments,” said Tech. Sgt. Maurice Moyer, 25th SRS standardization and evaluation noncommissioned officer in charge.

In providing highly sought after services for warfighters from the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines and a rapidly growing list of coalition partners, the unit always has something going on. The Airmen support more than 30 unique mission partners and 30 events annually in approximately 250 days of operations.

“With the space range experience we provide, our warfighters are going to succeed against any adversary, any time,” said Moyer.

2nd SOPS decommissions SVN-36

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 2nd Space Operations Squadron decommissioned Satellite Vehicle Number-36, the second to last Block IIA satellite, Jan. 27.

Capt. Collin Dart, 2nd SOPS assistant flight commander of GPS mission engineering, said the disposal of SVN-36 will allow for newer vehicles to take its place.

“The disposal of SVN-36 won’t have an effect

on any holes or signal outages.”

“The main reason it was decommissioned was because, at this time, we’re accepting a lot of the new generation GPS IIIs,” he said. “We’re trying to open up the constellation to accept more of those new vehicles.”

Initially launched March 10, 1994, the satellite exceeded its estimated design life of around seven years, serving operationally for nearly 26 years.

First Lt. Kristina Brandes, 2nd SOPS chief GPS sub-systems analyst, credited maintenance for exceeding its design life.

“The disposal of SVN-36 won’t have an effect on any holes or signal outages,” she said. “We still maintain 31 operational satellites and 35 total satellites in our constellation.”

Space operators at 2nd SOPS perform command and control operations 24/7, 365 to support the constellation for 4 billion worldwide users.

“I think it’s really awesome that Airmen have been able to maintain this entire constellation and push past the boundary of its design life,” Brandes said.

The decommissioning the final GPS Block IIA satellite is scheduled to happen later this year.

HONORED for teamwork

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Headquarter Air Force/Defense Strategies Institute recognized the 1st and 7th Space Operations Squadron members’ work to strengthen their team and rewarded both for their efforts.

HAF/DSI identified both squadrons as a “best practice for a traditional association relationship and leadership” following six months of surveys and interviews across Peterson and Schriever Air Force Bases.

“I take great satisfaction knowing members of Team 8-Ball (1st and 7th SOPS combined nickname) were the ones who told this narrative,” said Lt. Col. James Hogan, 7th SOPS commander. “It really is all about the team in our case, hopefully others can replicate this kind of unity across the Air Force.”

Both 1st and 7th SOPS leaders will speak at an upcoming symposium regarding how all guard, reserve and regular component Air Force units can improve their associations.

“I feel incredibly proud to know leaders at the headquarters are track-

ing the amazing things Team 8-Ball is doing,” Hogan said. “I am truly blessed to be able to help lead this team in the most exciting mission in space.”

HAF officials conducted anonymous interviews and surveys with the squadrons on how the associations worked together, what benefitted everyone, what needed to improve and what aspects could be duplicated.

Throughout those reviews, both squadrons were repeatedly noted for their combined efforts.

“They provided their assessment reports to Col. (James) Smith (50th Space Wing commander) for 1st and 7th SOPS,” said Senior Master Sgt. Peter Christensen, 7th SOPS operations superintendent. “It indicated ‘Team 8-Ball’ as an Air Force best practice in regards to Total Force associations.”

Hogan detailed some of the work both 1st SOPS and 7th SOPS do to build unity.

“Team 8-Ball does physical training together every week; we train on the mission together, we execute the mission together,” Hogan said. “We have reserve members filling in leadership roles when there is a need and they participate in Airmen life groups.”

Christensen said the 50th Space Wing leadership hopes to create, develop and maintain a culture of teamwork with Team Schriever.

“While Team 8-Ball’s accomplishment is something that started when Lt. Col. Hogan and the previous 1st SOPS Commander, Lt. Col. [Mark] Bigley, took command, it is part of a base-wide culture and is a true example of what all of Team Schriever should be striving for,” Christensen said.

“This recognition just highlights what all of us here at Schriever are capable of if we work together.”

Hogan hopes Team 8-Ball continues to follow the mission of Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein, which is to revitalize the squadrons.

“I am truly blessed to be able to help lead this team in the most exciting mission in space.”

Topics include leadership versus management, legal system and discipline, bullet writing, basic communication and resource management. This course is ideal for those who have not supervised before or are running a flight for the first time.

Nutrition and Exercise course

The Nutrition and Exercise course is scheduled noon-1 p.m. March 19. The course will focus on what the body needs versus what it is given.

TAPS Education Course

The TAPS Education Track is for those transitioning members pursuing higher education.

The course is scheduled 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 26-27. This track focuses on topics such as how to achieve academic success, how to research and compare institutions, and how to finance higher education. After completing the TAPS Education Track, service members will be prepared to complete an application to an accredited institution, schedule a session with a counselor from an academic institution, or meet individually with education counselors as needed.

Tuition Assistance brief

The 50th Force Support Squadron is sched-

uled to host a tuition assistance brief from 3-4 p.m. March 9 and 27 in Building 210, Room 310. No appointment is required and the briefing is mandatory for all first-time TA users.

Additionally, any personnel who have not pursued their education in the last year are now required by AFI 36-2649 to have follow-up counseling. This briefing fulfills the requirement.

Informed Decision course

The 50th Force Support Squadron is scheduled to host an Informed Decision course 9 a.m.-noon, March 31, in Building 210, Room 310. The course is designed to enhance knowledge of Air Force benefits. The goal is to ensure personnel obtain the needed information in order to make sound decisions for themselves and their family. First term Airmen and second term Airmen 12-15 months prior to their date of separation are required to attend pending involuntary separation.
