The 50th Logistics Readiness Flight now contains much more floor space in the LRF Warehouse than it had in the past after a four-month process on Jan. 16, 2020. With the updates, LRF warehouse is now meeting the wing’s mission of being mission ready.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In years past at the 50th Logistic Readiness Flight, there was little space available for the team to operate in the way they expected.

After months of work in the building, the 50th LRF now has the capability to assist dozens of Airmen at once and safely move inventory to different places.

Paul Hight, 50th LRF mobility technician, is grateful for the improvements.

“Before, the bin rows used to look crowded and went all the way down,” Hight said. “We took every other row out to create a 12-foot working isle so that way we can safely get a fork lift in here and store bulk things.”

The process began in August and Hight said they’re about “9899 percent done” with putting the rows together.

“We’re just tweaking little things now,” Hight said. “I’d say it took four months to get this to where it needed to be. Our bodies are feeling it.”

Richard Molina, 50th LRF mobility lead, said everyone in the group had input to improve the situation in the warehouse.

Whether it was heavy lifting or pitching ideas, each member played a vital role in the new appearance.

“I had ideas, he had ideas,” Molina said.

“Orlando (Williams) had ideas. Everyone had ideas. It was an overall team effort.”

Their work has made an impact in several areas.

“We’re meeting a couple different things here. We’re meeting the wing’s mission of being mission ready,” Hight said. “Also, we’re Air Force Instruction guidance compliant. We make sure we’re in compliance with Air Force standards.”

That efficiency also improved the life of those who will be deployed.

Instead of needing to scour the warehouse for gear, it’s now in specific places and easier to access than in the past.

“We broke it down so that one row would be different accessories and then the bulk,” Molina said.

It’s also — depending on requirements of Airmen who are being deployed — no longer a tedious process.

“It was an overall team effort.” in certain spots, it makes it easier to find the customer’s requirements.

“You can set up all your stuff on the line and as you the customer comes in, you have 50-60 people coming in in one wave,” Hight said. “You can outfit 60 people with just two or three people. You as the customer are also the owner of the bag and you need to know what’s in that bag. Now, we can get folks processed, deployed in a matter of a couple hours versus days depending on what you need.”

AF CROUGHTON, England — Something that I have heard often since I’ve been in the Air Force — and realize I repeat every time I meet a new Defender in the squadron — is that mistakes aren’t punished but crimes are. Failures are the best way to learn the right way to do things, but speaking from a career field that has been accused of “eating its own,” sometimes the distinction is lost. How can an individual fail in a “no fail” mission while still learning and moving forward?

Rather than try to figure this out on my own, I did what I’ve been raised to do — ask a SNCO. Thankfully, there was an answer from one of my Senior Master Sergeants who summed it up as, “You succeed, mess up, screw up, or fudge up.” I propose that we change the way we look at failures, and use this framework — “Mess Up, Screw Up, and Fudge Up” — to judge how bad a failure really is.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Schriever Airman and Family Readiness Center is starting the New Year focused on a few goals: increase awareness about job resources and training, offer more financerelated classes and communicate important program changes to support Team Schriever.

“Many people don’t realize our classes and services are not just for military members, they are also available to [Defense Department] civilians,” said Andrea Hernandez, Schriever AFRC flight chief.

“There are several resources offered to military members that are also open to spouses, like resume review and employment-related workshops, and [Transition Assistance Program] classes.”

The center, part of the 50th Force Support Squadron, serves Team Schriever through the following programs: • Transition and employment • Deployment and family readiness • Financial management • Work-life balance/key spouse • Relocation services • Exceptional family member • Air Force aid • Military and family life consultant • Casualty services/survivor benefits

“This year we are really focusing on employment — especially for spouses,” said Hernandez. “We are currently coordinating a work-from-home seminar, scheduled this spring, to help spouses navigate ins and outs of how to find reputable companies offering legitimate opportunities.”

ACCIDENT?

The Schriever AFRC works with a variety of local agencies — such as Mount Carmel Veterans Service Center, USO Pathfinder, Department of Labor, Pikes Peak Workforce Center and other local military installations — to highlight job listings, share feedback and promote training opportunities relevant to service members facing career transitions.

The center staff, a team of nine, also uses community partner feedback to tailor classes and workshops.

“Interview prep is a common topic,” said Hernandez. “The feedback we get from local employment agencies about transitioning service members is almost always related

“Most people don’t like to talk about finance — it’s not generally a fun topic,” said Hernandez. “But it is so important.”

Lenea Lance, Schriever AFRC personal financial readiness consultant, and the newest member of the team, will oversee classes and workshops related to finance and Air Force Aid. “It is important for Airmen to understand how personal finance decisions can impact both personal and career goals,” said Lance.

“I’m looking forward to offering classes on investing, buying a home or car, and preparing college students for the first year of dorm living.”

Hernandez mentioned the Air Force has implemented new financial “touch points” to ensure Airmen are prepared for financial changes they will encounter during their service, such as moving from the dorms to an apartment, benefiting from pay increases or non-taxable pay, becoming a parent, and saving for unexpected events.

“Airmen shouldn’t wait until the week before a move to make sure they have enough money to pay for rental deposits and fees, monthly rent and utility payments, etc.,” said Hernandez. “We want them to come in and talk with us — if we don’t have the resources, we will work with them to find the help they need on, or off base.”

Schriever stays proactive, provides free gun locks

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In an effort to protect those serving, the 50th Space Wing is giving away free gun-locks to Team Schriever members as a part of the Time Based Prevention Program.

“The idea is to slow people down from that thought of taking a suicidal action, so they have more space between stimulus and response,” said Jessica Ditson, 50th Space Wing violence prevention integrator. “Creating that space can save a life.”

Ditson said anyone who has access to the installation can receive a gun-lock, whether they’ve had suicidal thoughts or not. The goal is to create a safer environment for Airmen and their families.

“Nothing is stopping [Airmen] from unlocking [their guns],” he said. “However, a few extra [moments] of having to unlock something has been shown to be enough time for someone to think differently or stop the impulse to end their life.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. resulting in one death every 11 minutes.

“After experiencing a loss, you’ll often hear ‘I didn’t see the signs’ or ‘I didn’t see it coming,’” Ditson said.

“You can help protect someone in crisis. Having a lock on a firearm can save them, and if it saves one person, it’s worth handing them out.”

Ditson said someone dying by suicide can have a serious affect, not just on one’s family but community.

“There are long-term effects to coworkers, friends, family and children,” she said.

“The closer you were to someone who died by suicide, the higher your risk to die by suicide becomes because it can seem like an option that works.”

This is why Ditson organized the Heartbeat Group on Schriever AFB. The group serves to help survivors absorb the impact of self-inflicted death, to offer the comfort of empathetic understanding and acceptance, and to support each other through healthy grief management.

“There are no set characteristics [of someone contemplating suicide],” Ditson said. “It’s different for everyone, so we must invest in everybody, because you never know when someone needs to hear they’re important, necessary and not a burden. Every Airman is important, every Airman matters. We’re the nation’s sons and daughters, and it’s our responsibility to take care of each other and this is another avenue to do so.”

“We want to keep everyone on Schriever safe,” she said. “Whether that be government service employees, active duty, guard, reserve, sister service, tenant unit or mission partners; however we want to frame it, everyone who works here will have access to them.”

The first 500 locks were provided by The Department of Veterans Affairs. Airmen can receive one from the First Sergeants, the Violence Prevention Office and the Mental Health Clinic.

“If you can get a gun lock from us for free, great,” he said. “If not, consider buying some or getting a safe,” said Maj. Louis Pagano, 21st Medical Squadron director of psychological health, chief of mental services. “Whether you have a single gun or many, safes, locks and storing guns outside the home works. Even if you’ve never had thoughts of suicide before, it may save a family member of yours or a friend that’s visiting your home.”

The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron welcomed a new emergency management flight chief who will supervise daily operations to ensure the flight performs at a high level. The new flight chief, Steven Reed, worked in the career field for more than 30 years, and retired from the Air Force as a chief master sergeant.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron welcomed a new emergency management flight chief who will supervise daily operations to ensure the flight performs at a high-level.

The new flight chief, Steven Reed, worked in the career field for more than 30 years, and retired from the Air Force as a chief master sergeant.

“I look forward to the challenge,” he said.

“I’ve had headquarters assignments at four different [Major Commands]. Since I retired from active duty in 2007, I’ve worked in a couple of contract emergency management flights as well as the El Paso County Office of Emergency Management for a year. The idea of being a flight chief again with active duty members is exciting. I enjoy being in a mentorship role. I have a really motivated team and I’m excited about what we can do in 2020.”

The flight is currently made up of six members other than himself. Reed said he wants to equip those members with the proper training, equipment, mentorship and backing.

One of them, Airman Kaylee Christy, 50th CES Emergency Management technician, said she hopes to see Reed bring his experience into the everyday workplace by introducing Airmen to new ideas.

“In the short amount of time having Mr. Reed as our flight chief, he has made significant changes,” she said. “From the function of each individual of the shop, to the plans and procedures of our everyday job. Having a new chief brings a new set of eyes, giving us a chance to see an outside view of what we could change or improve.”

Reed said taking care of Airmen is important to him, paraphrasing Chief Master Sgt. Roger Towberman, U.S. Space Command senior enlisted leader, “If I take care of my Airmen, they will take care of the job.”

“Having a new chief is pushing our emergency management flight toward becoming a flight that not only does what is required, but what is necessary to complete the mission in the best possible way,” Christy said.

The mission of the emergency management program is to save lives, minimize the loss or degradation of resources and continue, sustain and restore operational capability in all-hazards physical threat environments.

“Disasters don’t discriminate based on rank,” he said. “They don’t care if you’re an ‘exercise exempt’ contractor, they don’t know the difference between a family member in base housing or a civilian working in the restricted area — they hit us whether we’re ready or not. I want to make sure preparing for emergencies is not thought of as someone else’s problem and at the squadron level, the priority is to make sure we do everything we can to deploy our members with the right training to be safe and successful in a wartime theater.”

In order to ensure quality service, the flight relies on Air Force and Department of Defense doctrine while also focusing on the commander’s intent and Federal Emergency Management Agency guidance.

“Our product to our customers is information in the form of training, plans, checklists, advice etc,” Reed said. “All [of this is] intended to prepare folks to prevent, respond or recover from contingencies ranging from natural disasters to deploying Airman to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear high threat areas.”

The primary services the flight offers are: developing the installation emergency management plan, conducting all-hazards assessment for the installation, providing classes for CBRN defense, Unit Control Centers, Unit Emergency representatives, Emergency Operations Center staff, providing CBRN response capabilities to the incident commander and coordinating with the wing inspection team to ensure base exercises match the flight’s plans.

“Human nature sometimes prevents us from relating to things we haven’t experienced,” Reed said. “If you’ve never deployed to a CBRN high-threat environment, it’s hard to appreciate the importance of your protective mask. If you’ve never slid off the side of an icy road, it may be hard to convince you to have sand or a shovel in your car. Our goal is to build a resilient Schriever community without you having to experience a disaster.”

50th Security Forces Squadron restructures to increase readiness, morale

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Security Forces Squadron modified work schedules in an effort to increase connection, morale and project a position of strength for installation defense.

Security Forces guidance was updated by the Air Force Security Force Center with an emphasis on the long-term negative effects of the 12-hour shift on the human body as it relates to performance for Airmen. Air Force leadership took interest in changing to eight-hour hour shifts to balance other mission requirements.

LEADERSHIP From page 3 burning out your people (or yourself) and hindering self-development. Although some failures may raise more alarms than others, every situation has to be looked at individually.

To “Mess Up” is to make that rookie mistake, and is often the easiest to correct. A “root cause analysis” is usually quick, and feedback is almost immediate. The important thing here to note that a “Mess Up” is typically something that is done in complete ignorance, not willfully. The outcome may still be severe but when evaluating corrective actions it’s easy to separate the mistake from individual performance. There’s no rank or age limit on this — any one of us can mess up — but what’s important is recognizing what you’ve done was wrong and moving on.

To “Fudge Up” is typically committing a criminal act, or to flagrantly disobey directions from others. The standard example would be getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while impaired. You know that driving under the influence is not only illegal but may result in the death of yourself or others, but also you decide that either you probably won’t be caught or you are “OK to drive.” In both cases, you’ve evaluated the situation, made a decision (“I’m going to get behind the wheel”), and you’re caught and arrested. On a more common basis this may be cutting corners at work when there are regulations/guidance that explicitly state what you shall/must/will do.

Unlike “Messing Up”, when you “Fudge Up” you know what the consequences could be because of your action but you decide to do it anyway. “Fudging Up” still offers the offender an opportunity to learn and move on but will probably need some disciplinary action to prevent future offenses (and to deter others).

That just leaves “Screwing Up,” which I’ve intentionally left for last because it is a very wide grey area. When you “Screw Up” you are typically in a scenario where you know what the possible outcomes may be, you have all the right tools as your disposal to make a decision, and you make a decision… but you still fail. This could be as routine as taking a different way to work to avoid traffic, only to end up taking longer to get there and be late.

For Security Forces specifically it may be responding to a loud noise incident, seeing there is a fight in progress, and attempting to break up the fight without backup to stop the violence immediately, leading to escalation of the fight and potential harm to the responding Defender.

There are probably plenty of examples in your own lives where you were in a tough spot, made a call, and still failed.

These are the moments that your growth potential is probably at its greatest. Similar to Maj. Mack (my counterpart at the 423d Security Forces Squadron) mentioned in an earlier commentary, failure is what builds resiliency if we allow ourselves to

The painful part of “Screwing Up” is that sometimes when you fail, you fail at a critical task that may lead to impacts on the mission (e.g., not generating sorties on time, letting the wrong person on the base, financial impact on Airmen’s personal pay) and there may be other consequences.

While loss of a position or disciplinary action may not be pleasant in the moment, I contend that it is still a valuable learning tool and you are better off having tried something and failed than not doing anything at all.

As military members, we are all responsible for issuing and obeying, orders but innovation only comes from taking calculating risks with a chance of failure. Being afraid to take these risks will eventually lead to stagnation and potentially mission fail anyway. Sometimes you get it right, and sometimes you get it wrong, but the mission will still move on. What matters is what you learn from those “wrong” times to make the mission more effective the next time. So the next time you (or one of your troops) fail at a task, ask yourself — did I mess this up, screw this up, or fudge this up?

SMART Heroes offers FREE sheet metal training to enlisted service members prior to discharge through a seven-week course which fulfills their first year of sheet metal apprentice training.
