— The 50th Space Communications Squadron provides cyber capabilities and support to the warfighter, a role vital to the missions here.

Airman 1st Class Javier Rojas, 50th SCS Operations Flight network operations technician, said the squadron maintains communications systems that are important in supporting Schriever’s space operations.

SMART Heroes offers FREE sheet metal training to enlisted soldiers prior to discharge through a seven-week course which fulfills their first year of sheet metal apprentice training. A coveted union certification is also included in the program!

Within one year, over 20 individuals have graduated and transitioned to union-supported apprentice positions.

“Intel, operations, space operations, multiple joint forces, missile defense, base defense and security

all depend on the 50th SCS to deliver cyber security capabilities.”

“We operate, maintain and defend the cyber space domain,” he said. “By doing so, we provide support for all the different assets that Schriever has here. We don’t run those systems, but we provide support for the Airmen who do.”

defense, among others.

“By providing support for all those important mission systems, we can guarantee the Airmen who are running them are able to run them in an accurate manner and as efficiently as possible, and for those systems to perform the tasks that they’re assigned to accomplish,” Rojas said.

The different shops within the squadron all have a unique role in supporting the squadron’s mission, allowing for more specific focus and attention to be provided to each aspect that goes into supporting Schriever’s varying mission systems.

“Each shop in our squadron has their own individual way of supporting all of our mission satellites,” Rojas said. “[Together we] provide support to important systems like missile detection, intel and GPS.” According to Phillips, intel, operations, space operations, multiple joint forces, missile defense, base defense and security all depend on the 50th SCS to deliver cyber security capabilities.

“What we do impacts the base directly,” Phillips said. “We maintain file services, print services, internet protocol TV and dynamic host configuration protocol (enterprise level services) for the entire base. We secure servers and remediate vulnerabilities on [unclassified and classified networks].”

Schriever maximizes its capabilities due to the Airmen in 50th SCS. “Even though it seems as though we’re in the back end, I would say we’re equally as crucial to the overall space mission,” Rojas said. “What we do is crucial in providing support to the bigger picture space mission.”

ACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — You are at work, seemingly on autopilot as you proceed through another task that you have mastered.

Arguably, one might say you could do this with your eyes closed.

As mid-morning approaches and lunch is within sight, your eyes glaze over as your mind runs through a mental map of all the local restaurants. Your fingers dance across the keyboard, tapping in a rhythm similar to a summer shower with rain drops beating steadily against the pavement. Before you consciously register you’ve been typing the last 15 minutes, the task is complete.

Without a second glance, the file is saved and sent to your boss while you grab your keys on a rush out the door.

The familiarity you reach in order to complete a task in this state of mind is what many strive too attain. Each person looks to learn any task with the goal in mind of being efficient in completion. When we become exceptionally proficient at a task, what happens to growth? What happens to the progress and innovation? While the solution to both of these questions isn’t always simple, our awareness goes a long way toward how we get to an answer.

Professional athletes, world class musicians and star chefs all have one thing in common with everyone in the world — the opportunity to have task awareness. Each of these examples represents individuals who have mastered their craft but are unceasing in pursuit of growth.

The pursuit of improvement through awareness is what separates the good from the great. Eckhart Tolle said, “Awareness is the greatest agent for change.” The average person won’t spend thousands of hours perfecting a skill

“Asking the important questions and noting simple changes could spark the flame of an entirely new way to complete a process.” at work, so how do we get there? This is where other hand awareness originates.

Col. Smith addresses wing during all-call

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Col. James Smith, 50th Space Wing commander, addressed the wing during his all-call Friday at the fitness center.

The crux of the conversation revolved around President Donald Trump signing the National Defense Authorization Act to create the United States Space Force.

“This is a huge event and I encourage you to be excited about this opportunity, but also realize this is going to drive a lot of change,” Smith said.

Smith spoke to those varying changes, starting with Gen. John Raymond, U.S. Space Command commander, and his appointment as the Chief of Space Operations.

Smith also noted that every civilian and military space personnel who were previously members of the Air Force Space Command, are now assigned to the United States Space Force, which is about 16,000 people.

“The rest of us are still part of our current service but are assigned to do United States Space Force missions,” Smith said.

He discussed other potential changes

including career fields that may or may not transfer.

While those in Space Operations are expected to fully transfer, some, like engineers, may only partially transfer. Career fields such as defenders are not expected to transfer at all but will continue to support Space Force missions, as assigned.

Notable bases will also “be realigned to United States Space Force” and likely renamed. Guard and reserve units are also likely to be created or transferred at some future time.

Numerous other items have the potential to change but only after discussion and planning.

“Until you’re told something has changed, all previous Air Force guidance and policies remain in effect,” Smith said.

Smith highlighted other constants such as civilians will

remain Department of Air Force employees assigned to Space Force; benefits, rank, retirement, pay and a strong partnership with the United States Air Force, will also stay the same.

“From the squadron level down, the most important thing all of you can do is continue to do your mission day to day,” Smith said.

Tech. Sgt. Sean Holder, 50th Space Wing Space Operations Command contracting officer, said it was good to have clarification.

“It’s something that we’ve all been talking about for the last few months so it was nice to hear,” Holder said. “I thought it was good. As far as the Space Force-Air Force as a whole, they’re really good with pushing out information. A lot of the things that were talked about were already filtered through. Communication has been really good. It’s great to get that info through email channels and then have it verified by the all-call.”

50th OSS beats Monday blues with mindfulness course

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Operations Support Squadron is hosting Monday Morning Mindfulness sessions at 7:30 a.m. every week for its members.

The purpose of the sessions is for Airmen to start their week with self-reflecting and goal setting.

“Monday Morning Mindfulness is a forum for people to create space prior to the beginning of the week to practice mindfulness in the workplace,” said 1st Lt. Matthew Rochell, 50th OSS GPS warfighter collaboration cell instructor, and one of the founders of the class.

“Mindfulness practices are equivalent to stretching or going to the gym,

but for your brain.”

Rochell said mindfulness can help Airmen train their minds to focus on the present. He said the goal is for the lessons learned can be applied in all aspects of ones life.

“Practicing mindfulness is a good way to step away from routine life,” said Staff Sgt. Drake Smith, 50th OSS course manager. “Mindfulness is being more aware of what you’re doing and how it can impact you long term.”

The forum is currently hosted in the new OSS crosslink room and is open for members of the squadron, regardless of rank or job title. Additionally, there will be free tea and snacks for attendees.

“The course goes over topics such as self-inflicted suffering, gratefulness, letting go, taking a moment to breathe, relaxing, finding intentions and setting goals,” Smith said.

“Whatever your situation may be, the course can help.”

Every week, the Space Team for Airmen Resilience sends their psychologist to the course to mediate it and ensure Airmen are getting the most out of the session.

Smith said these sessions can help people get out of their own heads and help them focus on the mission, consequentially erasing a negative mindset and starting the week on a positive note.

Additionally, he added the class has no religious or spiritual ties, the only intent is for Airmen to practice mindfulness.

“Everyone has their own ways and were raised to think different things,” he said. “It’s not always easy to be open-

minded, but meditation is something every person should do if they want to better themselves. It helps you [learn] to love yourself, forgive others and let go of things.”

Smith said before this course, he would’ve never thought of meditation as a group activity, but believes being with a community of people all focused on mindfulness helps him focus.

“You’re mitigating mental volatility with mindfulness,” Rochell said. “The military can be stressful, but by being a more mindful person, you will be better at connecting with people and accomplishing the mission.”

— If there’s a real-life ‘easy button,’ Capt.

Christopher Dong, 1st Space Operations Squadron campaign planner, went out of his way to develop it for his crew.

Dong’s integrated space common operating picture earned him recognition for the Harold Brown Award while stationed at Buckley AFB in Aurora, Colo.

Although Dong, whose background is in aerospace engineering and holds a master’s degree from the University of Colorado Boulder, made it sound simple, creating the algorithm still took time.

Once he simplified the process, though, the arduous endeavor became basic.

“I used (engineer programming language) primarily to code everything and I pressed a button and it did all one thousand iterations in a few minutes rather than having to do all of that by hand,” Dong said. “If I wanted to run a scenario a thousand different times with a consolation of satellites just moving ever so slightly, I didn’t want to do that manually.”

Bell is not only grateful to have Dong in the squadron, but he’s happy to watch him lead by example.

“It’s very important to have someone who’s willing to see a problem, either a small or large problem, roll their sleeves up and jump in and be ready to solve it.

It makes us more effective in defeating the enemy,” Bell said. “He’s seen where we need improvement and seen where he can apply his unique and exquisite skill set to make our mission better.”

Bell also highlighted additional recognition Dong earned for his work.

“Chris was requested for Spark Tank and was approved by Gen. [Jay] Raymond and he made it to the Vice Chief of Staff’s [Gen. Stephen Wilson] desk as one of the service finalists for this initiative,” Bell said.

Bell looks forward to how 1 SOPS will benefit from Dong’s expertise and initiative.

“It’s going to be huge, in particular with the stuff he’s working on for our squadron,” Bell said. “Being able to cut down the intense task for our operators is going to allow them to shift their focus to more of a warfighting capability and what we need to be effective against the enemy.”

Dong’s creation also provided him an opportunity to send the idea to Spark Tank, an annual competition where Airmen can pitch ideas to Air Force leadership and a panel of experts.

“It made me feel what I did was important,” Dong said. “I’m not sure if they’re still using the tool I developed at Buckley since that was two years ago, but I know there have been a lot of ideas that have sprung from (COP) since I left.”

His work came at a critical time for Buckley as they had an issue he was capable of solving.

“I was working a proshift one day and one of the operators said, ‘We don’t know where our satellites are in space,’” Dong said. “So I brought up our commercial soft-

2nd Space Operations Squadron sets SVN-74 healthy and active

— The 2nd Space Operations Squadron set Satellite Vehicle Number-74 as healthy and active to users on the 2nd SOPS operations floor Monday.

Setting SVN-74 healthy and active means the satellite will be available for use by military and civilian GPS users around the world as part of the constellation currently maintained by the squadron. This makes the satellite the first iteration in the GPS III family to join the active constellation following its launch Dec. 23, 2018.

Capt. Ryan Thompson, 2nd SOPS assistant director of sustainment, said various training modules and upgrades were instrumental in making the satellite operational.

“In order to operate GPS III, we first had to install Architecture Evolution Plan 8.0,” he said. “This allowed our squadron to control the new satellite without a next generation operational control system. The 2nd SOPS training and evaluations flight was able to expeditiously give our operators top-up training that allowed them to become comfortable with the new satellite.”

The GPS III vehicle family provides new capabilities vital to ensuring the fidelity of the constellation and signal in the contested, degraded and operationally limited environments.

According to the Lockheed-Martin press release, GPS III satellites have three times better accuracy and up to eight times improved anti-jamming capabilities than their predecessors, and a design life extending 25 percent longer than the newest GPS satellites on-orbit today. “It [GPS Block III vehicle two] is being managed currently by Lockheed-Martin,” Elliott said. “They are the ones actually get-

ting the satellites up there and once it is up in orbit, they make sure everything is good before handing it over to us.”

probably come to mind. Brushing our teeth, writing a sentence and texting are great examples. Now think about performing them with your non-dominant hand.

Unless you are ambidextrous, or about one percent of the world population, your completion time was likely much slower. What seemed flawless under normal circumstances now feels faulty and rigid.

The comfort level in performance is diminished while simultaneously increasing your level of effort.

And while there is no evidence inefficiencies will be found in cleaning your molars, writing in cursive or choosing the right emoji, the mental process map you cycled through in this heightened state is the foundation for identifying those gaps.

These basic tasks are great barometers for the initial understanding of how we can apply this other hand awareness concept to our work. The process application is simple and doesn’t change much from how you already complete a job.

If we think about how we normally complete a job, it revolves around two steps: identify the job and complete the job. The big adjustment during application is the change your level of awareness in the effort. This cognizance is relatively simple, but is more complex than just recognizing steps.

As you advance through each step it is important you are noting any subtle differences or collecting questions that are sparked during your attentive state. You might notice simple items such as particular assets are kept in a location that slows the process or work builds up in a particular work center during the off shifts. You may realize that technical guidance is hampering capabilities or a task might be obsolete altogether. This conscious advancement creates momentum for growth. When we apply other hand awareness our task cycle is now comprised of the following steps: identify your task, elevate your awareness and complete the process.

With the understanding of how to apply it to our tasks, what exactly is other hand awareness? It is the observant fulfillment of a job. It is a spotlight on a task, an amplifier of inefficiencies and a platform for reinvention. It is

deliberate and equally supports change when needed.

Simply put, other hand awareness is being attentive to what you’re doing. This concept is not about a one size fits all approach to improvement.

As with many of our duties, asking the important questions and noting simple changes could spark the flame of an entirely new way to complete a process or give valuable time back for other tasks that need to be completed. Footprints weren’t left on the moon by people who walked to work staring at the ground.

Each of us has the opportunity to make an impact just as those pioneers did.

Nearly one hour has passed and lunch is almost over.

Your return to work can bring much of the same routine, but it doesn’t have to. It’s far past the time to lay the mundane to rest. Your attention thus far validates your desire to tap into your latent capacity. Nothing phenomenal happens on autopilot.

Take hold of your agenda, breathe new life into it.

See it as if it were the first time, with new eyes and an insatiable hunger for revitalization. Applying other hand awareness can change a task in a work center today, lead to a policy change for tomorrow and has the ability to create change for your organization’s future.

Expressing Anger: Is it okay?

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Expressing emotions like anger is a necessary way to communicate with one another, some individuals when they encounter this emotion may choose to hold it in, while others may seek to express it.

Maj. Louis Pagano, 21st Medical Squadron director of psychological health, said one being better than the other depends on various factors.

“Popular psychology and media teaches us that to manage anger we have to blow off some steam, vent, or it’s best to hit a pillow,” he said. “This is a myth and an old idea from the time of Sigmund Freud, referred to as Catharsis, whereby we must purge ourselves of anger and other negative emotions to provide an enjoyable psychological cleansing experience.”

Pagano said anger is defined as a natural response to when people feel someone is wronged.

“Anger can be understood to be a part of our fight or flight mechanism,” Pagano said. “Anger alerts us to boundaries being crossed or something unsafe occurring. It motivates us to do something about it.”

Pagano said, various forms of research show encouraging the expression of anger toward another person directly or indirectly, actually increases aggression rather than releasing it .

“Participating in aggressive sports like football or mixed martial arts, which are presumed to encourage catharsis, [can] boost aggression and anger over time,” he said. “The concepts of ‘venting’ and ‘hitting something’ as healthy persists because sometimes people feel better in the short run in some way afterwards reinforcing the belief that catharsis works.”

Individuals rely on these activities for a quick release of their anger, rather than allowing time for the emotion to subside.

Jan Devitt, 50th Space Wing community support coordinator, said even though individuals may feel sadness, fear, frustration, disappointment or embarrassment, anger isn’t necessarily a “bad”

emotion and it can be useful.

“Feeling angry about something can actually create a growing opportunity,” she said. “Most people will experience episodes of anger which feel manageable and don’t have a big impact on their lives. Instead of bottling up anger or exploding, expressing anger can be done productively.”

Anger has three general components: • Physical-where an individual may experience muscle tension or elevated heart rate.

• Cognitive-where angry thoughts come forward.

• Behavioral-which can entail yelling, fighting, and mental brooding.

“Managing unhelpful or negative thoughts before they manage you and spiral out of control is a constructive way to express anger,” Pagano said. “Challenge unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, practice taking the other side and imagine how you’d encourage someone else if they were in the same situation.”

Recognizing physical sensations felt in anger and trying relaxation techniques is another way to manage the emotion.

Pagano said the management techniques do not get rid of the anger, they only throttle down the physiological response. Individuals must remember anger can be a normal and healthy response.

When it comes to managing and dealing with anger, there are several options for Schriever Airmen.

The embedded behavioral health provider in family health clinic, the Space Team for Airmen Resilience team embedded in the 50th Operations Group, the mental health clinic, chaplain’s corps, Military Family Life Counselors, and Military One Source are available for Airmen.

“Calming down and working through anger and other emotions can help an individual communicate in a calm manner,” Pagano said. “Practicing assertiveness and active listening can help avoid conflict. Remember [it] is part of everyday life and is sometimes unavoidable. Dealing with conflict is not something we’re born with, it requires patience and practice.”
