The New Year brings many changes, including those affecting military pay and benefits.

The Uniformed Services Blended Retirement System is a new system combining aspects of the traditional Legacy

Retirement System and the Thrift Savings Plan, which took effect Jan. 1.

This new system applies to members in the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps.

“BRS offers military members the oppor-

tunity to leave the military with something, even if they don’t stay until retirement,” said Liz Archuleta, 50th Force Support Squadron community readiness consultant. “It can be a nice start to a long-term retirement system.”

Why I wear the uniform

I could have chosen to do anything with my life. I could have worn a suit and tie, construction hat, lab coat or even a fire suit. Why did I volunteer to give up my civilian life so I can make less money and work longer hours than my peers?

All my life I was told to go to college, get a degree and make a lot of money in order to be happy.

Even though it never resonated with me as much as it did with my peers, I took everybody’s advice and went to college anyway. After two years something did not feel right, I felt that I was destined to do more and to make a difference in the world.

Anyone can go to college and get a degree, but not everyone has the guts and courage to join the Air Force and be a part of the elite, less than 1 percent of Americans who serve.

Now that I am in the Air Force, what motivates me to put on the uniform every morning has to be my wingmen. I have made many great friends I consider family from basic military

training and tech school, to a point where I can trust them with my life. Because we all wear the same uniform, we all share the core values of integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do.

I know when dark days come upon me, either at work or in my personal life, my wingmen would sacrifice their personal desires and comforts in order to keep me safe and ready to take on the mission ahead, and I would do the same for them.

There is a special bond you make with your wingmen I cannot describe, but every Airman knows how it feels when your wingman has your back. My wingmen have always challenged me to do better, go faster and be stronger. I have met some of the hardest workers in the Air Force who I strive to be like, and I’m thankful to be on the same team as them.

The uniform is more than a dress code. There is a weight to the uniform I carry with me every time I wear it.

The weight of excellence, sacrifice and defending the Constitution of the United States is a lot to bear. However, because I have the best wingmen in the world, I can rest easy knowing they have my back and I have theirs.

Air Force saves Airmen time, no longer requires first year evaluations

MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho — Air Force officials announced Jan. 4 Enlisted Performance Reports are no longer required for Airmen in the grade of airman first class and below with less than 36 months’ Time-In-Service or Air Reserve Component Airmen below the grade of Senior Airman.

This policy change supports Air Force senior leaders’ focus on revitalizing the squadron and saving Airmen time.

It is intended to eliminate an unnecessary administrative requirement and empower frontline supervisors, raters, and commanders to frequently engage with their Airmen face-to-face, said Lt. Gen. Gina Grosso, deputy chief of staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services.

“While the Air Force values the contributions of all enlisted personnel, the requirement to document performance in a formal evaluation prior to the grade of senior airman is not necessary,” Grosso said.

Instead, the Air Force has additional means available to document an Airman’s performance and to ensure he or she is meeting the training, developmental and experiential skills required to perform as professional Airmen, she explained.

Performance feedback and Airmen Comprehensive Assessments will still be required. Initial feedback sessions will occur within 60 days of raters taking over as supervisors and then every 180 days until an EPR occurs.

The removal of EPRs prior to promotion to senior airman will allow Airmen more time to learn their primary skills and missions before their performance is documented on an EPR, Grosso said.

All active-duty enlisted Airmen will receive their initial evaluation upon reaching their first 31 March 31 static closeout date after either promotion to senior airman, or after completion of a minimum of 36 months’ Time-In-Service, regardless of grade, whichever occurs first. All Air Force Reserve Component enlisted Airmen will receive initial evaluations upon the first March 31 SCOD as a Senior Airman.

Commanders still retain the option to complete a directed by commander evaluation to document substandard performance for those airmen first class and below any time after an Airman reaches 20 months’ Time-In-Service. If a directed by commander evaluation is written, the Airman will receive a subsequent evaluation the following March 31 static close-out date.

Schriever Airmen represent at weapons school

Three Schriever Airmen earned their patches at a recent U.S. Air Force Weapons School graduation Dec. 16, 2017.

Innovating furthers the Air Force’s ability to protect and serve. Maj. Anthony Raphael, 7th Space Operations Squadron flight commander weapons and tactics flight; Capt. Benjamin Brinich, 1st Space Operations Squadron flight commander weapons and tactics flight; joined Capt.

Jason Mills, 2nd Space Operations Squadron, chief Global Positioning System weapons and tactics, to represent the base during Weapons School.

They were three out of only seven space Airmen to graduate out of approximately 100 weapons officers in the course’s six month period.

“It was extremely challenging, rigorous and rewarding, and I learned a lot about the various space capabilities we bring to the fight,” Raphael said. “Getting to mission plan how these capabilities can be used was a great experience.”

According to Nellis Air Force Base’s website, Weapons School “trains tactical experts and leaders to control and exploit air, space and cyber (space) on behalf of the joint force.”

The school offers a wide array of Weapons Instructor Courses, each going through multiple phases honing a variety of operational skillsets. The Airmen’s WICs specialized in space, covering every major on-orbit system. They embarked on multiple trips throughout the country, participating in training missions and planning at an in-depth level.

According to Mills, the course was set at a “marathon sprint.”

“I can guarantee the course will challenge you in ways that no other military opportunity will, especially for a space operator, but that you will leave empowered to do things you never thought a space operator could do or would be allowed to do,” he said.

For example, he was selected as a mission planning cell chief for a mission during the weapons school’s cumulative integration course, where students come together and plan as teams.

Each team receives intel and are allotted a short planning phase before execution. After air crews are briefed on the plan, aircraft take off in response.

“Normally, the space student is one of the planners and a pilot is the MPC Chief, so it was very non-standard to have one of us ‘non-kinetic’ guys ‘herding the cats’ as we say here,

and while challenging, it was very worthwhile,” Mills said.

“As the aircraft took off, I was struck by the craziness that they let a space guy lead the planning for a mission with all those billion dollar aircraft actually flying. Frankly put, it was awesome.”

The Airmen established strong bonds with their fellow classmates before graduating.

“We would do ‘family dinners’ and outings when we could to take a break from school,” Raphael said. “All families have issues at times but I realized we truly bonded. After those issues we could still come together to solve problems. I think that is the true measure of bonding.”

While few in number, the Airmen were honored to have the opportunity to represent the base.

“I took great pride in representing Schriever,” Raphael said.

“The capabilities we have are not always well understood by the non-space community and explaining what we do to others was one of the highlights.”

Mills concurred, adding he recommends more Airmen take part in the experience.

“It (weapons school) gives you thick skin and teaches you what it’s like to really be challenged,” he said.

“To have someone look at you and say ‘I know you can do this, but I’m not going to make it easier, so rise to the occasion, double down and figure it out.’”

Anyone interested in starting the vetting process for the program should consult with their squadron’s weapons and tactics officers and leadership.

Airman journies from South Africa to Schriever

Senior Airman Scott Munro, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron engineering assistant, grew up in a quiet residential town about 45 minutes outside of Durban, on South Africa’s East Coast, “It was a fun childhood. We were always outside running around in the bush pretending we were soldiers having epic battles. Little did I know, I would one day join the military,” Munro said.

Graduating high school in 2000, and obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Management Accounting in 2004, Munro went on to work as a financial manager for a construction company for three years.

While he appreciated the experience, Munro felt there was more to life than sitting behind a desk working numbers. Involved in his local church community’s music program, he decided to resign from his job and commit to serving as an intern at his church.

“I developed a late sense of adventure in life and wanted to do more than just work in an office,” Munro said.

This sense of adventure led him on multiple mission trips in the local area and across the continent; traveling to Botswana, Zimbabwe and India.

Through those journeys, Munro discovered a great desire to help others, leading him to leave everything and everyone he had behind at the age of 26 and move to the U.S. on a Religious Worker’s Visa. He then pursued a five month ministry school, thinking he would return to his country afterward.

“I loved South Africa and never planned to leave the country,” Munro said. “I always thought I would live there my whole life.”

Upon completion of school, he accepted a one year position with the organization as a staff member helping others with their finances and facilities

maintenance. This opportunity fed into another, and a year later he took on a pastoral assistant position with a local Pittsburgh church. During this time, he continued assisting with maintaining facilities and assisting the worship pastor with the music ministry, another one of his passions.

Munro slowly came to realize the United States was becoming his new home.

“It didn’t take long living in the United States for me to develop a huge respect and honor for those who have served this great nation, and I wanted to be a part of that,” Munro said.

He wished to serve his new-found home through the Armed Forces, but was unable to, due to his Visa.

While he initiated the application process for permanent residency through his church, the stars aligned for him to meet his future wife. In October 2014, he married and soon after received his permanent residency.

Due to financial constraints, he reluctantly resigned his position at the church and started his own painting company.

At this point, he put the thought of joining the military aside and focused on his new family and business. Until one day a friend spoke to him about joining the Air Force Reserve, reigniting his desire to serve.

Munro researched commissioning sources but was not eligible to since he was not a U.S. Citizen.

Refusing to let that stop him, he enlisted in the Reserve.

By September 2015, he attended basic military training, where at his graduation he had the honor and privilege of marching out into the middle of the parade ground in front of family, friends and fellow Airmen swearing in as a U.S. citizen.

The fitness center will host the annual bench press and deadlift competition Jan. 26, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Competitors will be split into two groups, alternating between bench press and deadlift.

The Schriever Air Force Base Fitness Center will host the annual bench press and dead lift competition 9 a.m.-12 p.m., Jan 26.

Participants must register in the fitness center for the competition by Jan. 24.

There will be prizes for bench press, deadlift and overall winners.

Competitors are typically divided into two groups; one will bench press while the other will dead lift and then the groups will switch.

Each competitor is allowed five total lifts per event.

Competitors cannot reduce weight after a failed attempt, but are allowed to attempt the same weight more than once.

Seth Cannello, 50th Force Support Squadron fitness center director, added if competitors fail their second lift at the same weight, they are out of the competition, even if they haven’t completed five total attempts.

“We start with the lowest requested starting weight, then add five or ten pounds each round depending on lifter requests,” he said.

Competitors can sit out as many rounds as they like until the weight they want to try is loaded.

The person that lifts the most weight based on ratio to body weight is the winner.

Cannello explained the fitness center has hosted a bench press competition since 2004, and added deadlifting in 2009.

“I was extremely apprehensive to add deadlift because I thought people would hurt themselves due to bad form and attempting maximum weight,” he said. “However, we haven’t had any injuries since adding the deadlift.”

Senior Airman Kyle Lucas, 2nd Space Operations Squadron mission planning cell mission analyst, has been lifting onand-off since he was 14, and is now planning to compete for the first time.

“I wanted to be a better and stronger all-around athlete,” he said. “I didn’t start deadlifting until I walked onto the football team at Penn State.”

Lucas entered the competition because he has been looking for ways to stay competitive.

“During the spring and summer, I compete in obstacle course racing,” he said. “I don’t have a competitive outlet for the winter months. I saw the flyer for this event and figured I’d give it a shot.”

Lucas’ favorite part of powerlifting is how it has brought him and his brother closer together.

“He’s stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base, but we talk everyday about our lifts,” he said. “We’re constantly texting each other videos of our lifts, mostly to brag about the weight we’re moving, but also to get feedback on form.

“When I told him I signed up he actually built me a training program,” he continuted. “He’s been my coach for this event.”

Capt. Christopher Fridley, 1st Space Operations Squadron mission commander, is also new to the competition, but has been power and dead lifting for a year.

Fridley’s favorite part about lifting is if one applies oneself consistently, there will be measurable progress.

“Not everything in life correlates so easily,” he said. “It (lifting) builds self-confidence and allows people to feel powerful.”

Cannello added the fitness center has seen strong people compete through the years, and it’s fun to see people try to set personal records during the competition.

He swore in as an active duty Airman March 2, 2017 and received his first assignment to Schriever Air Force Base.

Though he has only been at Schriever for a short time, Munro has enjoyed every day and looks forward to the future.

“Senior Airman Munro is a great asset to the unit. He comes to work every day with a great attitude and an even better work ethic.

We are proud to have him in our unit. He is a difference maker,” Summers said.

Constant sources of support and encouragement from leadership and family have motivated him to pursue a commission and Munro is currently submitting a package to Officer Training School.

“You are never too old to pursue something new,” Munro said. “Your future is in your own hands.”

Medically ready to be mission ready

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — From periodic health assessments to regular dental exams, every Airman should know the importance of maintaining their Individual Medical Readiness at all times. What many may not realize is that medical readiness is a multilayered, collaborative approach among many Air Force Medical Service teams to ensure each Airman has met the requirements to deploy.

“Medical readiness is a collaborative effort between medics who see Airmen at the military treatment facilities, the immunization clinic, the pharmacy, as well as the Public Health branch that manages medical readiness rates, as well as other AFMS departments,” said Lt. Col. Marie McIntee, chief of physical standards development for the AFMS. “It is a whole group of people that work together to get Airmen medically ready to deploy.”

Maintaining IMR and being medically cleared for deployment are two key components to medical readiness.

“The IMR program is a commander’s program,” said Col. James Mullins, the public health branch chief. “This means commanders are ultimately responsible for ensuring their Airmen are ready to go for deployment.

The Public Health office at each installation keeps records and tracks IMR rates of the local units.”

IMR includes immunizations, the annual periodic health assessment, dental readiness, certain laboratory tests such as the biennial HIV test, and individual medical equipment such as prescription gas mask inserts. IMR status functions as a baseline assessment of an Airman’s medical readiness record and medical conditions. These assessments help address any potential conditions that could

In addition to IMR, the Public Health branch manages all the additional requirements that Airmen might need to deploy.

This includes health threat briefings on any potential hazards in the area of operations, special immunizations, and guidance on illness prevention.

“Through our deployment medical clearance database, Public Health serves as the final check point to make sure Airmen have what they need medically before they are deployed,” Mullins said.

cal and medical standards to ensure they are healthy enough to serve and to perform their duties, whether that is in home station or deployed to an austere environment. The AFMS Flight and operational medicine team establish these standards.

“It all starts with what are the standards an individual needs to meet in order to serve in the U.S. Air Force,” McIntee explained.

“We want everyone to be deployable and healthy enough to do their job, so we do not accept people who do not meet certain, baseline conditions.”

Flight and operational medicine teams also set the standards Airmen must meet to

perform special duties. Some deploymentspecific requirements go beyond IMR, and are specific to geographical location. These come into play prior to deployment and are not part of the in-garrison IMR. “If an Airman is tagged to deploy to an area where there is a risk of Yellow Fever, then we would require them to get additional immunizations,” McIntee said. “We set these requirements not only to ensure the safety of Airmen, but also to ensure that the unit remains effective in executing the mission.”

Public Health and the flight and operational medicine teams rely on various medical professionals who work to maintain Airmen’s medical readiness and work together to fulfill those requirements.

“When you have a whole squadron that is tagged to deploy, you need to make sure the military treatment facilities are able to meet the requirements to ensure each Airman’s readiness,” McIntee said. “You need to make sure that the pharmacy is able to meet any prescription demands, that MTFs are able to complete any missing health assessments, and Airmen are up to date on their eye exams so they are able to receive the necessary gas mask inserts. Logistically, there is a lot to consider for medical readiness.”

While there are many components to medical readiness, setting baseline medical standards and monitoring IMR are integral in ensuring a unit has the capability to perform their mission and to ensure that the Airmen in that unit are ready to deploy.

“It is vital that all Airmen keep their IMR readiness up, so there is less work to be done to get them ready to deploy,” McIntee explained. “The theory is that if we keep our Airmen ready in-garrison, then we are always able to execute the mission when called on.”

Every journey begins with a single step – An Airman’s story of resiliency

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — (This is part one of a series following an Airman through her cancer treatment and amputation) This started as a story about an Airman fighting cancer, overcoming the odds, and returning to active duty. Unfortunately, stories about cancer are rarely so simple, and just when the finish line is in site, new challenges can present themselves.

Such is the case for Maj. Stephanie Proellochs, a Medical Service Corps officer, who after a year of treatment and the amputation of her left foot, thought she was cancer-free in November.

She was not.

Her cancer had spread, and would require additional treatment. While this story had to change as a result, and the ultimate outcome is still in doubt, a few things have not changed. Proellochs’ drive to overcome her cancer, her commitment to rejoin her fellow Airmen, and her relentlessly sunny and positive attitude are all still present and stronger than ever.

Here is the first part of her story, about an Airman exhibiting strength and gratitude through the highs and lows of her treatment journey.

“Every journey begins with a single step,” read the Facebook caption under a picture of Proellochs walking on a treadmill with a smile from ear-to-ear.

Most Airmen usually are not excited about exercising on a treadmill, but Proellochs is not your average Airman. She is a recent amputee and this single step marks an important milestone on her road to recovery.

Her journey highlights how patient-centered principles of Trusted Care help wounded, ill, and injured Airmen at all levels of care.

10 years, it all started in late 2015 with unbearable pain in her left foot. That began a yearlong quest to find the root of her pain, a journey that drastically changed her life.

“I started seeing doctors, being referred to specialists, and tests,” Proellochs said. “My healthcare team was determined to find answers to the cause of my pain and get me back to work.”

Her quest for answers led her to an orthopedic oncologist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in November 2016.

“The first thing he said to me was, ‘You have a tumor in your foot and the next time I talk to you, I will be taking it out,’” Proellochs said. “They removed the tumor in December 2016.”

While most would be shocked at the thought of a tumor, Proellochs had some prior experience with a benign tumor in the same foot. She assumed that once doctors removed the tumor, her ordeal would be over.

However, in January 2017 she learned that her tumor was malignant and her foot needed to be amputated.

Insisting on holding off on such a life-changing operation, Proellochs opted to undergo months of radiation therapy instead. By June, Proellochs thought she was healed and ready to go back to work.

Unfortunately, not long after she was back in combat boots, she noticed lumps in her upper thigh. In June, she discovered that her tumor was metastatic and had spread from her foot.

“It was at that point I said, ‘Take the foot’,” Proellochs said. “When I found out it was on the move, it was time for the foot to go.”

For anyone, an amputation of a limb is a life-altering experience and one that no one is prepared for.

Resiliency From page 10 Fortunately, Proellochs’ husband and his experience working with amputees made the upcoming transition a bit easier.

“My husband, John, volunteers for a nonprofit organization that is focused on working with wounded veterans who have disabilities like amputations,” Proellochs said.

“He was familiar with life after amputations and conversations about what life would be like was common in our household. With the help of my husband and his experience, I felt prepared for it. And now he got his own amputee!”

Knowing life as an amputee would be different, Proellochs wanted to have one last “tour” with all ten of her toes. This motivated her to plan a “Farewell to Foot Tour” with her family.

“I wanted to put both of my feet in the sand one more time. My family, friends, and I planned a vacation to commemorate the last time I would be able to do this with my left foot. We all met up and took pictures of my ten toes in the sand and two feet in the water for the last time.”

In September, Proellochs underwent surgery to amputate her foot at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland. The procedure was a below-theknee, trans-tibia amputation on her left leg.

This type of procedure will give her a strong chance at regaining a functional limb, and enable her to return to an active lifestyle.

Proellochs received a below-the-knee amputation in September 2017 to treat a malignant tumor that had metastasized and spread.

at Walter Reed, I felt comfortable moving forward with the amputation,” Proellochs said. “The team here has such an amazing reputation, so I knew I was in good hands.”

Proellochs’ strength, positive outlook, and, most of all, gratitude after amputation are impossible to ignore and drive her recovery.

“I have the ‘papercut’ of amputations. I only lost my left leg, so I can still drive,”

Proellochs explained. “When you talk to other amputees with more severe injuries, it puts it all in perspective. I have spoken with patients who are quadruple amputees, making incredible recoveries. I look at my situation and think, ‘This is nothing. I just have a papercut.’”

Proellochs might describe her amputation as “just a papercut,” but facing such a

life-changing event like this is a sign of her strength and her ability to stay focused on her recovery.

Athlete in Focus: Capt. Adekunbi Adewunmi

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIOLACKLAND, Texas — Capt. Adekunbi Adewunmi was an avid soccer player growing up in Kansas.

When it became clear to Adewunmi, 50th Operations Group standardizations branch chief at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, that she would not play professionally, she focused on rugby to maintain her fitness.

Adewunmi was among four Airmen chosen for the All-Armed Forces team that played in the Luptus Intus Women’s Elite 7s tournament Sept .2-3 at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.

While the team finished 1-3 and placed fourth in the tournament, Adewunmi got to display her readiness and resiliency on the pitch.

Here, Adewunmi talks about what it means to play rugby for the Air Force: Why compete in rugby?

At the point when it was clear that I was not going to play soccer professionally, I still wanted to stay in shape and challenge myself. I started to do long distance running, and I really enjoyed that. Rugby was a big athletic challenge for me, and I think that is what initially drew me to the sport. When I watched my sister play, I was so impressed by the physicality of the sport but also very intimidated because I was smaller than most of the other players. When I finally started to play, I wanted to be able to support my teammates and have their backs on the field, which meant I was going to have to overcome my size. I focused on improving my technique in all aspects of the game so that that along with my strength would give me some advantage on the pitch. One of the best things about rugby is that you can have athletes from every type of athletic background or no athletic background at all and I have seen the same level of desire to learn and improve from both cases.

What’s your experience in rugby before the Air Force?

Before I played for the Armed Forces team, I had been playing rugby for two-and-ahalf years. The team I played for in Denver, Colorado, is a Division 1 women’s team called Black Ice Women’s Rugby Football Club. I had never played rugby before I joined Black Ice, but my twin sister, who had been playing for around five years at the time, encouraged me to join the team.

Air Force, what have you gained from an athletic, military and personal perspective?

Being selected as one of the Air Force representatives for the Armed Forces team further instilled in me the importance of being fit year round. The length of time from when I heard applications were being accepted for the trial camp to actually being selected was not enough to get in shape. Had I not made fitness and being ready athletically for every rugby season a priority, I may have missed out on an opportunity.

From a military perspective, I have not had a lot of interactions with members of other services. But I realized that just like in club teams around the country, there is a network of military rugby players as well.

What are you bringing back to your duty station by competing in rugby?

I think I am bringing back a fresh excitement for not only fitness but all of the opportunities available for Air Force and military personnel. I am hoping that more people continue to seek out these opportunities to represent their service or even on a smaller scale represent their unit through different athletics. Additionally, I hope that I hearing about rugby leads more people to watch and

must serve at least two years to be TSP-vested compared to fulfilling 20 years of service in the traditional retirement system. Also, a higher percentage of members earn retirement benefits in BRS than LRS. According to officials, more than 80 percent of those who join the military do not retire and therefore do not invest toward their retirement. Having this plan in effect will change that.

The government will contribute one percent of basic pay in members’ TSP accounts every month. Additionally, after two years of service, the government will match the member’s contributions in TSP up to four percent. This results in members being able to have an existing retirement fund they can take with them even if they leave the service before 20 years.

Competing in rugby is building my readiness and resiliency with my fellow wingmen, duty station, and the Air Force by allowing me to gain experiences and build relationships with military players, service wide.

I was able to be a representative of the Air Force to the other services on a personal level and I received the same. I think making these connections on all levels is what the Air Force, and the military as a whole, needs to strengthen readiness and resiliency at a time when inoperability is a key to all of our success.

“This is a way to encourage Airmen to stay in the Air Force for a longer period of time,” Archuleta said.

“Continuation pay is similar to a retention bonus. Members will receive continuation pay at 12 years of service in return for a commitment of four years of service.”

Service members can get more information about the BRS by calling the Airman and Family Readiness Center at 567-3920 to schedule an appointment. The A&FRC will also conduct a BRS training in the Building 210 First Term Airmen Center 8 a.m. Jan. 18.

“Airmen should think long and hard and make an informed decision before choosing,” Archuleta said. “Once it is made there is no reversing it.”
