JTF-SD leaders recognize NIPA award winners

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Tom James, Joint Task Force-Space Defense commander, and his leadership team recognized its intelligence directorate members for earning the National Intelligence Professional Award for Mission Integration in a ceremony at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Jan. 29.

The award recognizes service and contributions that enhance the stature and standing of intelligence community professions. Specifically, the intelligence directorate demonstrated unity of effort between the intelligence community, office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Department of Defense in the defense of U.S. equities in the space domain.

Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, the JTF-SD office of the Director of National Intelligence representative, recommended the intelligence directorate for the award and provided the ceremony’s opening comments.

“I am so proud of all of you and the hard work you’ve done the last two years. As you know, intelligence is one of the most important functions in the command, it drives decision making and operations. It’s why we’re

here,” said Kirkpatrick. “The DNI has a number of team awards but this is one of the most important ones and you’ve earned it.”

James addressed the award winners acknowledging their unique situation.

“It’s great to see the terrific work you do be properly recognized,” he said. “When you look at this mission area, the confluence of technology and capability, and see space growing not just as a warfighting domain but one the entire world is using. Everything comes together here. We can’t do our work without understanding the environment and understanding the adversary. Here, we see the living, breathing end state of your work.”

The ceremony recognized more than 30 members who were assigned to the directorate at the time of the award submission. The citation noted the directorate’s efforts to synchronize “intelligence community and Department of Defense collection methods and capabilities in order to better understand foreign space and technical threats that could pose a significant risk to U.S. and Allied national security interests. Additionally, the team developed new analytic products in order to inform decision-makers on operational timelines as well as to a new combatant command.”

James recalled his personal studies of World War II during professional military education and this team’s efforts during his presiding comments.

“There are a number of theories as to why we won but I think the primary reason is the integration of intelligence and operations,” he said referencing the breaking of Enigma code in Europe and the Japanese Purple code. “We had intel working together with operations.

Analysts usually cite the superior decision making and often leave out what intel provided. It’s not lost on me or the leadership here.”

James noted that same integration of intel and ops here is vital for the organization’s mission success.

“Your efforts here are making us better and we’re continuing to improve at integrating until it’s hard to tell the difference on the ops center floor,” he said. “It’s absolutely necessary for our mission set and fortunately we have a mission that makes it easy to get passionate about. You’re what right looks like and I’m not surprised by this award because frankly we’ve stacked the deck.”

.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — Awe, purpose, wonder and gratitude. These are the feelings that came over me as I stood with four Tuskegee Airmen and my brother, Alex, to unveil the newly named Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Jr. Airfield in late 2019. This remains one of the fondest memories and greatest honors of my life.

Beyond an incredible opportunity to celebrate the heroic service of a Tuskegee Airman, World War II pilot and patriotic American, I marveled at the sense of duty connecting generations past and present in that crucial moment.

Having endured the ugly truth of racism, where a Black Airman on U.S. property was treated with less dignity than his German prisoner, a prospective cadet in the crowd at the unveiling asked Tuskegee Airmen, retired Lt. Col. George Hardy, “Why give so much to a country that did not give the same for you?” Hardy’s simple but powerful answer: “Because I believed in the values my country stands for.”

A few years removed from this memory, two Tuskegee Airmen, Lt. Frank Macon and Lt. Col. Ted Lumpkin, have

crossed the great divide, but their eternal wisdom will stay with me. They paved the way and cleared the skies for people like me to thrive: a Black man enabled by this profession and energized by public service; to grow up in a country that has seen a Black president, vice president, secretary of defense, Air Force chief of staff, and Air Force Academy superintendent.

Guardians will wear Air Force rank insignia until the Space Force finalizes its own rank insignia designs, which is expected sometime in the coming months. The service will announce opportunities for Guardians to contribute feedback during the design process.

Crowdsourced feedback on rank names was collected from the field and was part of the decision-making process.

This change does not trigger the need to update the member’s common access card. The service will issue guidance on updating to a Space Force common access card when those details are finalized.

Faces of Space – Staff Sgt. Amos Hommel

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— After working in the U.S. Air Force for 13 years, a person might question their motivation to continue and persevere. Staff Sgt. Amos Hommel, Delta 8 payload operations supervisor, has a simple answer to that question: family.

“Even before I joined I’ve been really close to my family, but being away from them makes me realize how important the little moments are when it comes to family time,” Hommel said.

Growing up in the small town of Kingsport, Tennessee, Hommel dreamed of being in the military, following in the footsteps of his father, who worked in a supply unit for the U.S. Army, and two cousins, who worked in a U.S. Air Force maintenance unit, joined the Armed Forces. Although Hommel had originally planned to join the Army, he enlisted in the Air Force in 2007.

“The Air Force has been really good to me and it has given me opportunities that I wouldn’t have had back in my hometown,” he explained.

Hommel’s career began in the 628th Communications Squadron at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, where he was selected to become part of an aircrew. Being a part of an aircrew is a special duty in his career field, and he truly enjoyed the five years he spent flying on C-17s.

“Flying on a C-17 is cool, but the tactical maneuvers were amazing,” Hommel exclaimed. “For instance, we flew through the Grand Canyon where the sides were above the jet. That was definitely a oncein-a-lifetime experience.”

Throughout his career, Hommel has had great mentorship. During his time in Charleston, he had a role model who made a large impact on his life and career, William Cotton, a staff sergeant at the time.

“Staff Sgt. Cotton actually cared,” Hommel said. “He didn’t just ask how my

day was or how a holiday was; he actually wanted to know details about my personal life and shared life experiences he’d been through.”

Cotton’s mentorship helps guide him as he worked with junior enlisted U.S. Air Force Airmen and U.S. Space Force Guardians.

Hommel tries to steer them away from the negative experiences he encountered during his career, reminding them not to base their career on one assignment, unit or base.

“Taking care of people is what’s important to me, because without that you don’t

have anything,” Hommel said. “You can be a good leader, but to be a great leader your subordinates need to care about what you have to say.”

Hommel isn’t all work though. He takes a keen interest in sports, especially football.

His dad was a preacher, so if he wasn’t in the church with family, he was most likely playing on the football field.

Growing up Hommel loved the University of Tennessee Volunteers football team. He even had hopes of joining the team one day, but during his junior year of high school,

he was injured. After the injury, contact sports became less of an option for Hommel but that did not stop him from persevering in life.

Aside from sports, Hommel also takes a keen interest in DC Comics.

“I don’t remember when it started, but from what I can remember, I have always been a Superman fan,” Hommel said.

From his demeanor to his attitude, Hommel finds similarities between him and Superman that are relevant to his life.

He says that he relates to Superman being a loner and how, at times, he felt alienated in his life. Hommel also values the ideals of Superman: everyonemust be saved and even criminals should be brought to justice in an ethical manner, instead of being destroyed.

Hommel’s favorite tattoo is on his forearm, with a montage of the original Justice League characters and their villains. He also has the Tennessee “power T” tattoo to represent the Tennessee Volunteers football team that he loves.

Although Hommel enjoys many things, the military is definitely a priority. His assignment as a payload operations supervisor at Schriever Air Force Base started in March 2020, and he’s already established himself as a leader in his unit.

Hommel oversaw the certification of eight brand new tech school Airmen on their duty positions while maintaining 24-hour communications system operator coverage for the protected Schriever Satellite Communications enterprise.

“Staff Sgt. Hommel exemplifies the ‘lead by example’ mentality,” said Chief Master Sgt. Michael Rozneck, Space Delta 8 senior enlisted leader. “Over the past six months he’s filled a technical sergeant vacancy, leading 22 military and civilian satellite communication experts.”

According to Hommel, a person’s military career is what they make it, and though there will be difficult times, he had this to say for a person who takes charge of their future: “You’ll have the time of your life.”

“You can be a good leader, but to be a great leader your subordinates need to care about what you have to say.”

I decided to attend the Academy to follow the footsteps of my father, retired Maj. Chris Brown; my brother, 2nd Lt. Alexander Brown; and mother, Navy Capt.

My father graduated from this fine institution in 1979 with the last all-male class, and he cheerfully reminds me that he was a part of something special: the first class to welcome the “eighties ladies,” — the first class of women — to the Academy. During his time as an Academy cadet, he experienced the strengthening of a strategic and national imperative. With an open mind and heart, he listened as new voices from new backgrounds and new upbringings championed innovative and bold solutions to our toughest problems, with the fiercest sense of patriotism. I share his love of diversity and inclusion, for the amazing story of each individual person makes us a stronger and brighter Academy, Air Force, and Space Force.

I have witnessed the fabric of our nation, in all of its many colors, during my own time here. Our classrooms, squadrons and people come from all walks of life: faith groups, political ideology, gender, race, sexual orientation, and most importantly, perspective. Our community makes me a better person enabling me to step into their shoes and see the world through their

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Women from across the U.S. Space Force and U.S Air Force volunteered to speak in a virtual panel, educating Girl Scouts on careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Jan. 12 and 19.

The panel, hosted by Girl Scouts of Colorado, put more than a dozen space and cyber professionals in touch with nearly 300 scouts and gave them the opportunity to share their experience with science, technology, engineering, and math careers within the Air and Space Force. Topics included satellite operations, engineering, life as an astronaut and the many other careers the USSF has to offer. The panel took place on two separate days; the first for kindergarten through 5th grade, and the second for 6th through 12th grade.

“I heard a story about the history-making, all-female space operations crew on [national public radio],” said Leanna Clark, chief executive officer for Girl Scouts of Colorado.

“I was awed by the crew’s accomplishments in a traditionally male-dominated field. I Googled the crew to find out more and knew immediately that we had to get our girls connected with this incredible group of women.”

who make the world a better place, and to create unique leadership paths through girlled traditions. The STEM panel was a perfect opportunity for Girl Scouts of Colorado to expose their young members to women living out those exact values every day.

Many of the mothers of these young women explained how motivational these panels were for their girls, and how grateful they were to the women who took the time to speak.

“Any event that inspires those that will be

the future of our nation holds an incredible amount of importance to me,” said panel volunteer 1st Lt. Kelley McCaa, 2nd Space Operations Squadron Satellite vehicle operator. “I’ve realized that growing up if I had the opportunity to see and talk to women in a STEM career, I would have been more encouraged to seek out a profession in STEM sooner than I had.”

According to the U.S. Department of Education, young adults with at least a bachelor’s degree in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics tend to have more positive economic outcomes, such as higher median earnings, than those with degrees in non-STEM fields.

However, the percentage of women represented in STEM careers continues to stay near only 40%.

Roth to serve as acting Secretary of the Air Force Staff Report Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

WASHINGTON — John P. Roth will serve as the Acting Secretary of the Air Force as of Jan. 20, until the president nominates and the Senate confirms a permanent replacement.

Roth succeeds Barbara Barrett, who served as the 25th Secretary of the Air Force from Oct. 18, 2019, until Jan. 20.

Roth has served as the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management and Comptroller since January 2018. From May 2019 to December 2020, he also performed the duties of Under Secretary of the Air Force, a role he held from June to October 2019.

“It is a privilege to serve Airmen and Guardians as the Acting Secretary of the Air Force,” Roth said. “Protecting the nation is a solemn responsibility; one that

A&FRC to host Right Start

The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosts a Right Start Information Fair 8 a.m.4:30 p.m., the third Thursday of each month at the Bldg. 300 Auditorium. Cold weather safety tips Cold weather can increase heart rate and blood pressure.

It can make blood clot more easily and constrict arteries, which decreases blood supply. This is true even in healthy people. Individuals over the age of 40 or who are relatively inactive should be particularly careful.

National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely: • Do not shovel after eating or while smoking • Take it slow and stretch out before you begin • Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter • Push the snow rather than lifting it • If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel • Lift with your legs, not your back • Do not work to the point of exhaustion • Know the signs of a heart attack, and stop immediately and call 911 if you're experiencing any of them; every minute counts.
