Migo is first female American Samoan chief master sergeant in the United States Air Force

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. — On Feb. 1, the 505th Test & Training Group hosted a historic first, Senior Master Sergeant Jacinta Migo, became the first American Samoan woman to be promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of chief master sergeant.

The family and colleagues of Migo watched live and via streaming video as she joined an elite group of senior enlisted that is only attained by 1 percent of the enlisted force.

Migo, the daughter of Faatamalii and Maiava Leo, is the first born and raised American Samoan woman to be promoted to the rank of chief master sergeant, which made this ceremony even more unique. She may be the first American Samoan ever to achieve this rank.

American Samoa is a U.S. territory covering five South Pacific islands and two atolls, which is slightly larger than Washington, D.C. It is the home to just over fifty-thousand people. Living in such a small area meant that “our culture focused on God, family, respect, service, and love,” Migo says.

She describes life in her hometown of Pago Pago as simple and strict, mostly because “with six girls in a row, my parents had to be [strict].” Migo is her parents’ third child of 11 children, six girls, and five boys — including one nephew who was raised as a sibling.

Her early life focused on school and church, playing sports at both places. “My mom was our number one cheerleader,” Migo recalls, “her voice would echo through the field or across the court.”

American Samoa is the home of the U.S. military’s most successful recruiting stations, and it has the highest rate of military enlistment of any U.S. state or territory.

Migo’s family has a long line of service in the U.S. military, including many of her immediate and extended family.

When Migo started high school, her second eldest sister joined the U.S. Coast Guard; she recently retired after 24 years of honorable service. The next year, her eldest sister joined the U.S. Army. Since then, two more of her sisters have served and one brother is also currently serving in the military.

Migo, her high school class valedictorian, joined the U.S. Air Force in 1998 because she met the service’s high test score requirements on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. The tropical islander volunteered for Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, to be her first duty station because she had family members living in the area.

During the ceremony, Col. Francisco Gallei, 505th Test and Training Group commander, noted that Migo was a highly accomplished Airman who has received many accolades over her career. “Not only has she been recognized with two major command-level awards, one in Pacific Command and the other in North American Aerospace Defense Command, as their Command and Control Battle Management Operator of the Year,” Gallei announced, “she was also the Air Force-level award winner last year.”

Gallei then looked to the audience and told her three children — Shelton, Terrence, and Alayah –their mother often says they are her greatest accomplishment. Migo emphasized this after her children placed the ceremonial chief master sergeant insignia on her uniform. “My suc-

cess comes from the Man above, my family, my friends, coworkers, and mentors.”

COVID restrictions prevented many of her family from traveling to witness the ceremony in person, especially in American Samoa. To them, Migo reiterated how important American Samoa and her family are to her. “I just changed my last name back to my family name of Migo,” she said, noting that she had planned to change it before she relocated for her next assignment. “I did so before this ceremony because the time was right; this honors my family, my village, and American Samoa.”

Though Migo looks back fondly on her career, she says she was not a perfect Airman in the beginning, and “it has not always been an easy journey.” She had many leaders, mentors, and family intervene and challenge her to be a better Airman. Her key to success and advice to Airmen is to be “persistent, be resilient, and to have humility.”

This advice is in line with this Samoan proverb and words of encouragement Migo shared to other American Samoans: “E iloa le Samoa i lona tu, tautala, ma lona savali,” — translated: “You know a Samoan by the way he/she stands, speaks, and walks.” Migo summarized this with, “be proud of your culture and where you come from. Never give up on what you deem important; when you fall or hit a road-block, get back up and try again or re-evaluate and then press on.”

Migo is currently serving as the superintendent of the 505th Test and Training Group. She is the principal advisor to the group commander on all enlisted matters and informs the commander on issues affecting the health, morale, welfare, training, and the proper utilization of over 500 personnel assigned to four squadrons, three detachments, and six operating locations.

Chief Master Sergeant Loretta V. Washington, superintendent for the 316th Medical Support Squadron, Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, knows what a historical and special moment this is for Migo. In 2020, Washington became the first female Samoan to attain the rank of chief master sergeant. Though close to each other, Samoa and American Samoa are two separate entities. Samoa is an independent c ountry west of the International Date Line, while American Samoa is a U.S. territory east of the International Date Line.

“Some may not understand that joy for someone you have never met,” Washington said of Migo, “but if you knew our Samoan culture, you’d know our humble story began as just two Samoan girls from little islands in the Pacific who joined the United States Air Force with the simple goal of making our parents proud.”

Kirtland female defenders among the first in the Air Force to get new female body armor

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. — After years of wearing the standard tactical vest originally designed for a male body frame, female Airmen from the 377th Security Forces Group were among the first Air Force defenders to receive the new issue of female body armor starting January.

The new, better fitting body armor will be distributed to all female security forces members on the installation.

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Brianne N. Trapani, 377th Security Support Squadron superintendent, spoke about some of the vest’s new features.

“The new female body armor is different from our current standard tactical vest,” said Tripani. “The new one is lighter weight, has a curved chest plate and a shorter torso size.”

Tripani included that the armor has an adjustable back corset that tightens to fit. The gear also has the unique feature of not being “one size fits all,” which allows the vest to conform to the female torso and provide better coverage.

“Our previous gear did not allow for much freedom of movement,” said Tripani. “So if we were in a situation that required us to run or quickly exit a vehicle, it hindered us greatly. It also put us at risk by wearing gear that was not properly fitted to protect us.”

These subtle changes to critical gear are steps towards inclusivity for female defenders.

One defender, Senior Airman Kiah C. Cook, 377th Security Forces Group defender, was one of the first at Kirtland to receive the new body armor.

“The first thing that came to mind was excitement,” said Cook. “This is a historic moment. It shows us that the military is starting to appreciate us females more, especially as cops, and getting us gear that is specifically for us.”

Creating better fitting armor for female defenders is part of the Air Force’s diversity and inclusion efforts.

killed by British soldiers during the Boston Massacre in 1770, to the freed and escaped slaves of the Civil War, through the Buffalo soldiers of Wild West to the Tuskegee Airman and right up to today, there has been no shortage of African-American patriots. Here are remembrances of just a few.

The 10th U.S. Cavalry, a Buffalo Soldier unit was deployed to Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The 10th Cavalry became famous for having five AfricanAmerican soldiers receive Medals of Honor. In doing so, the 10th Cavalry wrote its heroics in blood. One soldier, Edward L. Barker Jr., even rose to the rank of captain, a rare event for the day.

The 369th Infantry Regiment, an African American New York National Guard unit known as the “Black Rattlers” fought in World War I under the French 4th Army and achieved amazing battlefield successes.

Despite the obvious racial prejudices of the time, they earned an impressive number of awards for valor receiving more than 171 decorations. The entire regiment received France’s prestigious Croix de Guerre.

While they still had to ride on the back of the bus, their heroics were so well-known that they received the unprecedented honor of leading the New York City World War I victory parade. And the German’s, recognizing the amazing tenacity of their enemy, gave them the nickname, “Harlem Hell-fighters.”

World War II brought forth another wave of distinguished African American patriots. On the USS West Virginia, Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Doris Miller, a cook, was up early Dec. 7, 1941.

As he served breakfast, explosions rocked the mighty ship and he went to the upper deck. Seeing flames, chaos and death, Miller first aided his wounded commanding officer, taking him to safety. Then he took up

a station at one of the many unmanned machine guns and began firing.

Although he was trained only as a cook with no instruction in the use of the automatic weapon, Miller reportedly downed two Japanese aircraft before the attacks stopped. He never left his post during the hours of the attack, a post he assumed out of necessity.

The commander of the Pacific Fleet, Navy Adm. Chester Nimitz, personally presented Miller with the Navy Cross, an award for valor second only to the Medal of Honor.

Brig. Gen. Charles McGhee, recently promoted and honored by the President in a State of the Union speech, also gives us an enduring lesson in fortitude to the mission.

After endless attempts to downplay their abilities, the Tuskegee Airmen were finally placed in combat with a single mission — escort and protect bombers of the German strategic bombing offensive.

When asked why he had never become an ace — shooting down five or more enemy aircraft, he said, “becoming an Ace was never more important than protecting the bombers.”

In other words, the mission is more important than individual fame. And they have become legendary for their commitment to the mission, and as a result to our country.

Vietnam saw 18 year-old Army Pfc. Milton Olive III receive the Medal of Honor for an act of bravery few people in any war have equaled. Olive’s unit was under heavy enemy attacks from the Viet Cong.

As the enemy fled the counterattacks of Private Olive’s 3rd Platoon, a few VC turned back and threw grenades, one of which landed near Olive, three of his buddies and the platoon leader. Olive grabbed the grenade and covered it with his body, absorbing the blast and saving his fellow soldiers while ensuring success of the counterassault.

At the White House ceremony to present the Medal of Honor posthumously to Olive’s parents, President Johnson summed up the reason we should remember the example of Olive and others like him: “In dying, he taught those of us who remain how we ought to live.”

Another Vietnam War hero, Col. Fred Cherry, endured torture, solitary confinement and repeated beatings as a prisoner of war for more than seven years. He was tortured when he refused to sign statements that the

United States was a racist country or make broadcasts encouraging African American Soldiers not to fight.

Even after suffering the most brutal torture — including an operation to repair a broken rib with no anesthesia — he never gave in to his captors, telling them, “You’ll have to kill me before I denounce my country.”

All of these men practiced and validated ideals which are uniquely American. Often in our history, those most persecuted are they who realize most clearly what it is to be American. As Americans, we should look at these examples and so many more — not just in February, but all year — to remind us that all Americans contribute to the preservation of what makes America the greatest country in history.

Hopefully, through role models such as these African Americans, we can all live Cherry’s words, “Race has nothing to do with it — I’ll succeed because I’m good,” both in our own goals and how we look at others. Their ability to do just that is what makes them not just heroes to African Americans, but heroes to all Americans.

Cold weather safety tips Cold weather can increase heart rate and blood pressure. It can make blood clot more easily and constrict arteries, which decreases blood supply. This is true even in healthy people.

National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely: • Do not shovel after eating or while smoking • Take it slow and stretch out before you begin • Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter • Push the snow rather than lifting it • If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel • Lift with your legs, not your back • Do not work to the point of exhaustion • Know the signs of a heart attack, and stop immediately and call 911 if you're experiencing any of them; every minute counts.

DFAS will collect 6% of net available pay each pay period. Collections may be extended past Dec. 31, 2021, if the member does not earn enough pay to collect the 2020 deferred taxes before that date. Beginning in January, your myPay LES will reflect the monthly collection amount and contain a note in the remarks section that shows the remaining balance of deferred Social Security taxes.

Civilian Employees: • The amount of Social Security taxes deferred in 2020 will be collected in eight installments between pay-periods ending Jan. 16 and Dec. 31. Beginning in January, your myPay LES Remarks section will include the 2020 deferred OASDI collection amount in that pay period, as well as the remaining balance to be collected. If you separate or retire prior to the deferred Social Security tax being collected in full, you are still responsible for the remainder of your Social Security tax repayment.

The unpaid balance will either be collected from your final pay or you may receive a debt letter with instructions for repayment.

Note, a Form W-2c may not be required for members who separated in 2020.
