Lazyman Triathlon runs through February

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 18th annual Schriever Lazyman Triathlon kicked off Feb. 1, and Seth Cannello, 50th Force Support Squadron fitness and sports director, warns, “Don’t let the name fool you.”

Though Cannello said this triathlon is considered a “lazy” approach to completing an Ironman –participants have 29 days to complete the challenge as opposed to the traditional 17 hours — there is nothing lazy about the people who finish the event.

To complete the month-long competition, participants must swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles before March 1. According to Cannello, the key to being among the 50 percent of people who complete the challenge is to have a plan.

“Most people who fail to finish the event don’t have good strategies,” he said. “The best advice I can offer is to have a plan, stay consistent throughout the month and finish your goal — you’ll be glad you did.”

Currently, more than 120 people are signed up, including Charles Thornton, 50th FSS recreation assistant.

“This will be my fifth year doing the lazyman,” Thornton said. “I keep signing up to challenge myself, because staying active gives me the energy to play with my kids after work.”

Cannello continues to host the triathlon because it’s popular and a good motivator.

“People know it’s coming every February,” Cannello said.

“Those who recognize they are falling behind on new health goals use this event as a chance to refocus on their commitment to fitness.”

This year, Col. James Smith, 50th Space Wing commander, signed up for the challenge to help meet his annual fitness requirements and to inspire healthy competition among his office staff.

“Events such as this offer Team Schriever members another opportunity to connect over common health goals and encourage teamwork,” Smith said. “We have some amazing athletes here and seeing others committed to improving their overall health certainly helps keep me motivated.”

The event follows the honor system and individuals are responsible for reporting their progress. However, they don’t have to figure it all out on their own. Cannello developed a calculator and sample training plans he sends out to those who register.

For those overachievers or more experienced athletes, Cannello created monthly add-on challenges to help people continue their physical fitness goals after February. For example, in March 2019 the challenge included the previously mentioned lazyman requirements and an additional 26.2 miles on an elliptical. Because people continue to request them, Cannello plans to develop monthly add-ons again this year.

“You will never know what you are capable of doing unless you give it a try,” Thornton said. “And finishing is an amazing feeling!”

AF CROUGHTON, England — Job satisfaction is an elusive beast. It has escaped me many times in my military career, especially in my early years. Prior to my commission, I built computers, installed networks and developed applications for small businesses. It was easy to find my sense of satisfaction. The efforts of my work immediately translated into not only monetary reward but also joy and gratitude from the customers that I served. I was excited to start and complete new projects. The more work I did the more pride I had doing it because I knew the sense of satisfaction I would have once the work was complete.

This changed entirely when I joined the Air Force.

For those of us that have the opportunity to be at the “tip of the spear” it is easy to understand the importance and impact that our work has on achieving a goal. For many others, we end up so far removed that we are unable to comprehend the value of the menial or undesirable tasks we are asked to perform daily. Trust me, I’ve had my fair share of undesirable tasks. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, people desire recognition for their contributions. But let’s be realistic, we are not going to get an award for answering a phone on night shift, completing a CBT or closing a hot tasker. Additionally, you are not always going to hear “great or outstanding job today” from your supervisor or your leadership for the routine work you do every day. Now, this could be because you think your supervisor and/or your leadership failed to recognize your superior skills, but more than likely this is because doing a great or outstanding job is the standard. So how does one stay motivated and find job satisfaction?

I admit that I may not be as fast as others and it took me several years to realize that I needed to redefine what job satisfaction meant to me. Completing projects in the Air Force takes a lot longer than I was accustomed to before joining. Many projects I would start but never see them to completion due to PCSing.

How am I supposed to get any satisfaction if I could never finish anything? How do I stay motivated to complete a project when it takes years to execute? This was when I realized that I was not going to be able to obtain the job satisfaction I needed. So I did what I think most people do. I contemplated separating

“Aim high, Airmen.” from the Air Force. Admittedly, there are more satisfying jobs outside the Air Force, where I could get back to the level of job satisfaction I wanted.

The fact that I’m writing this article means that I did not separate. I attribute this more to my superior procrastination abilities than anything else. However, this did allow me the time I needed to reflect and redefine job satisfaction for myself.

I realized that I no longer wanted to rely on anyone else for my own job satisfaction. I did not want to wait for someone in my leadership chain to tell me “great job” for me to feel good about what I was doing. Also, I did not want to wait two or three years to finish a project to finally get some satisfaction. I wanted job satisfaction all the time. continued page 7 | LEADERSHIP

Schriever school liaison helps students ‘thrive’

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — According to the Department of Defense Education Activity, the average child in a military family will move six to nine times during their school career.

Fortunately for Team Schriever families and their 1,400 school-aged children, Ruth Moore, 50th Force Support Squadron Child and Youth Education Services school liaison, is available to help.

“Ruth is committed to helping families ensure their children receive a quality education, no matter their circumstances,” said Stacy Compton, 50th FSS Child and Youth Services flight chief.

Moore, who has more than 24 years of military experience including time as a military spouse, takes the whole-child approach when helping students.

“This means not only focusing on academics, but also the emotional and social well-being of the student,” said Moore. “It also includes more family and community connection to ensure students complete school with practical life skills.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Airmen 1st Class Joshua Martin and John Carmichael earned Air Force Achievement medals from Maj. Justin Gabbard, 50th Comptroller Squadron commander, Jan. 31 for their innovation with the unit.

Martin and Carmichael, both 50th CPTS financial management technicians, entered the Air Force as space operators but worked in the financial management section for four and a half months due to delays in their follow-on space training.

“This is the first time this has happened where 50th Operations Support Squadron has had to send us some Airmen,” Gabbard said. “It was so beneficial having them.”

Though both Airmen enjoy working in CPTS, they wondered how long the temporary placement would last.

“Upon my arrival to Schriever Air Force Base, I had already been in the Air Force for two years; I initially came in as a linguist and was reclassed during my training,” Martin said. “So to hear that I would have an even longer wait to get my career rolling was kind of unsettling.”

Rather than complain about their roles in 50th CPTS, both Airmen displayed their capabilities and contributed their ideas to the unit.

Martin automated a previously manual task that occupied Airmen for two hours per day, three times per week.

It now takes just an hour per week. It also freed $215,000 in funding last quarter.

“You go on the Defense Travel System [website] and create an authorization that ties up our funding,” Gabbard said. “Let’s say you never go on that trip and the order is just sitting out there. (Martin) created a mail merge system that would see you hadn’t submitted that voucher within 30 days and would automatically send you an email reminding you to do your voucher. That would allow us to pay you and release any funds that were in excess.”

Carmichael also developed a system that helps financial management and will save the Air Force money.

He noticed government orders outstanding (GOO) weren’t always properly distributed. Those orders can’t be reused unless they are canceled or Airmen file a travel voucher.

voucher, we come in and say, ‘What happened and why hasn’t this been filed?’” said Master Sgt. Wilfredo Mateo, 50th CPTS flight chief financial analysis. “That’s money we leave on the table if a member doesn’t file.”

Carmichael sharpened his Microsoft Excel skills and learned how to ensure Airmen used GOO properly to make sure money didn’t go to waste. “[Carmichael] was going through and seeing if those requirements were still valid,” Gabbard said. “And he’d see if that money is still needed, or if we could release it and still put it toward our new mission requirements.”

While 50th CPTS is grateful for what Martin and Carmichael offered, they understand the Airmen won’t permanently remain with the unit.

“Their goodness is two-fold,” Gabbard said. “They get to come over to [financial management] and they get to learn how we operate. The space mission is getting back two incredible Airmen with a little more breadth to them, which I think makes them even more valuable.”

After this week, both Airmen will rejoin 50th OSS to continue training with their squadron after nearly five months with 50th CPTS.

CAST responds, notifies in timely manner

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron Casualty Augmentation Support Team provides Team Schriever with a timely casualty response.

When a call is received, regardless of the time or date, members of CAST must respond to the Air Force Personnel Center within 45 minutes of receiving notification.

“We’re the main recorders and reporters of a casualty,” said Staff Sgt. Kiara Kashner, 50th FSS noncommissioned officer in charge of CAST and career development supervisor. “We work in a timely manner to ensure we can notify the next of kin as soon as possible. If someone passes away or gets seriously hurt, we want to be the ones to notify the family first.”

The CAST is responsible for assembling a notification team including a chaplain and a ranking official in the deceased service members unit. From there, CAST will brief the notification team on what happened and how to execute their duties.

“The most important thing is to mitigate any cross talk and rumors,” said John Gamer, 50th FSS casualty assistance representative. “We don’t want [family] to hear about things that may not be true.”

For military members, updating their Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance and Virtual Record of Emergency Data is vital as they take precedence over a will and testament. Not updating those documents can result in families not receiving the benefits they’re entitled.

“We’ve seen in the past, those documents haven’t been updated to reflect current information,” Gamer said. “For us to have to sit down in front of a widow to tell them they’re not listed as a beneficiary, it’s devastating.”

The team is made up of FSS Airmen due to their access to personnel related programs. The team will usually have an NCO and multiple Airmen. Currently there are six Airmen on the team.

“Schriever is a small base, you get to know everyone at some point,” Kashner said. “In personnel, we see everyone when they in-process and out-process. We’ve had cases where the deceased or injured were friends with a CAST

member, we’ve had to take those members off the team for the case because we knew it would affect them. You have to be mentally ready, this job can get to people.”

The team carries an on-call phone which rotates weekly throughout the unit. They have responded to suicides, serious injuries and casualties that have occurred while participating in high-risk activities.

CAST works to ensure families can access grief councling, monetary support and be enrolled into the Air Force Families Forever program. The AFFF program assigns the family of the fallen member a financial counselor who will do taxes, take care of investments, budgeting and will contact creditors to find out what bills need to be paid.

— First Lt. Carl Humphrey, 2nd Space Operations Squadron satellite vehicle operator, and 1st Lt. Tyler Liermann, 2nd SOPS weapons and tactics assistant flight commander, participated in Global Lightning 20, at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, Jan. 21 to 30.

“We focused on delivering space capabilities to Global Lightning and U.S. Strategic Command overall, but it was also about working together with different combatant commands around the world,” Humphrey said. “There were a lot of agencies and branches gearing up together and trying to be cohesive in how we prepared for potential threats.”

According to U.S. Strategic Command, Global Lightning 20 is a Global-Integrated Exercise, linked to the Joint Staff and five other combatant command exercises.

Although Humphrey and Liermann’s role in the exercise was no different than their daily duties at Schriever, serving as the position, navigation and timing experts for the teams involved, their participation in the exercise also provided an opportunity for them to have face-to-face interaction with some of their end-users and see how they can provide better service.

“A lot of what we were doing during the exercise was expressing what our capabilities are and how we can enhance them and help them [our customer] plan around what the adversary might be doing,” Humphrey said.

The 2nd SOPS and other wing units and mission partners participated in the exercise including 4th SOPS and 50th Network Operations Group along with sister service and coalition partners.
