LTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla.

— What does Black History Month mean to me? Black History Month serves as a reminder of the struggles, challenges and hardships which my family and others like me endured in America. This is a month to honor those who have paved the way for me and have triumphed during the darkest times in our history. I am U.S. Air Force Maj. Marshalria “Marsha” Vaughans, a native to Cleveland, Ohio, and Montgomery, Alabama. I am a wife and mother of three and this is my story.

I am the youngest of four children, raised by a single parent in one of the poorest communities in the inner city of Cleveland. From a young age, my faith taught me I was “more than a conqueror” and I believed I would do great things in my life. In grade school, I would often be the only African American in my classroom. Growing up, I thought this was normal.

As I navigated through life, my environment drastically changed, but my values remained the same. I quickly learned the value of education and hard work, as my mother, grandparents and other family members worked in the cotton fields for survival.

Shortly after high school graduation, I enlisted in the Air Force as a 2S0X1,

Supply Journeyman. My first duty station was Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska and this began the foundation of my career.

I knew that I wanted to be in a position to make an impactful change as I had numerous examples of non-effective leadership. I then commissioned through the Tuskegee University-Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps where I learned to become a better leader. This was the beginning of my officership.

As a second lieutenant, I was the Chief of Wing Protocol. My first immediate supervisor at the time was Col. David Goldfein, the current Chief of Staff of

it is ‘Persevere.’” the Air Force. Following Goldfein, my second supervisor was Lt. Gen. Darryl Roberson, the former Air Education and Training commander. I must admit, it was not a traditional “first job” for a lieutenant and I had little room for error with the position.

I was always taught, no matter what I do in life, just lean on faith and remember to maintain a spirit of excellence.

EXCITING EVENTS for families of deployed

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Space Squadron’s Deployment Family Events program attempts to curb stress families and spouses feel during an Airman’s deployment.

The Deployed Affected Airmen Program funds DFE and provides about $6,000-$7,000 per year for DFE to conduct its activities for families.

“We want to make sure

we take care of the families while their loved ones are gone.”

Events include taking educational tours through Royal Gorge, swimming with the fish at the Denver Aquarium, pottery painting at Chapel Hills Mall, Painting with a Twist and more.

Dawn Mathes, 50th FSS Airman and Family Readiness noncommissioned officer in charge, works to assure families know the squadron hasn’t forgotten about the family during their Airman’s deployment. “[The Airman Family and Readiness Center] is here to take care of the family members when their spouse is here, but we’re also here even when they’re not,” Mathes said. “Giving them the opportunity to meet with people who might be going through similar things

is a good way to network. We want to make sure we take care of the families while their loved ones are gone.”

Enrollment occurs through the A&FRC when an Airman out-processes with the center before deployment. The data assists people like Mathes to contact loved ones and keep them informed of planned activities.

“We let them know what the program is and what we do,” Mathes said. “If they’d like to be enrolled in the program, they’ll continue to get emails that their spouses provided. They get those emails from me on a monthly basis about what the event is. They can opt out, but they have to let me know.”

Activities must have a purpose, however, and cannot simply be for entertainment. Mathes is required to follow guidelines.

“It has to meet its mark just like every other funded program,” Mathes said. “It either has to be recreational, cultural, historical or educational. We can’t just do anything.”

Master Sgt. Peter Jason Uson, former A&FRC NCOIC, previously headed the program before Mathes took the reins.

During his three years running the service, Uson provided new experiences for most involved with the program.

“Many of the families and children hadn’t previously done the events,” Uson said. “They got to snorkel with the fish at Denver Aquarium and they really enjoyed it. They said these were unique events. These are a little different than a spaghetti dinner.”

NDAA establishes new TAP requirements

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 became effective Oct. 1, 2019 and brought changes to the Transition Assistance Program, designed to ease the transition from military to civilian life.

The legislation added three additional requirements to the previous mandatory requirement, pre-separation counseling. To be compliant with the Veterans Opportunity to Work to Hire Heroes Act, service members now must complete pre-separation counseling, Department of Labor employment workshop, VA Benefits briefing and a capstone. In addition, three, two-day tracks were added to the overall curriculum for entrepreneurial, vocational and higher education.

The separation process will now start with an initial counseling session with a TAP representative from the Airman and Family Readiness Center. This meeting helps Airmen understand what requirements they need to complete before their separation.

During the session, Airmen will complete a self-assessment, which will help determine in what tier the Airman is placed. Airmen can be placed in one of three tiers. Each tier has different requirements and helps determine how ready they are for separation from the military. Tier one is for service members who are well prepared, and tier three is for Airmen who are least prepared.

“The next step is to participate in pre-separation counseling,” said Heidi Goodbar, 50th Force Support Squadron TAP manager. “This provides briefings on various benefits, programs, services and other important resources members can use to ease their transition into the civilian sector.”

Per the new NDAA, Airmen must complete their initial counseling and pre-separation counseling no later than 365 days prior to their separation or retirement date.

The third step is completing the three mandatory specialized TAP workshops. These consist of the required VA Benefits and Service briefing, a Department of Labor employment workshop and the Department of Defense briefing that covers finances, resiliency and a Military Occupational Code crosswalk to identify skills and career goals.

Airman who aren’t required to attend the additional tracks may optionally participate if interested.

The final step is the capstone meeting Airmen have to attend no later than 90 days prior to separation. This appointment verifies whether service members have or have not met the required activities to ensure they’re prepared

to transition out of the military effectively and pursue their personal post-separation goals.

“We strive for total preparation for the civilian sector,” said Cheryl Jensen, 50th FSS work life specialist. “Civilian life is completely different and we want to make sure everyone is taken care of.”

50th CES structures flight keeps Schriever operational

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron structures flight keeps the base operational by performing repairs and maintenance across the installation.

The unit is comprised of three Airmen and three civilians who are responsible for maintaining and repairing Schriever’s structures.

when a customer calls and says something is broken and needs to be fixed. This primarily consists of structures that need to be repaired and could be a detriment to our mission here.”

The safety of Airmen and their mission is affected by the unit’s ability to successfully perform their duties. They repair mod-doors, locks and safes that protect mission assets. Additionally, if there is a safety concern involving the structures, the unit will respond within 24 hours to ensure Airmen are safe.

However, the structures flight isn’t the only unit that responds. The squadron has heating and air conditioning, plumbing and electrical units that also play an important role in keeping Schriever functional.

“We’re customer service based and we’re here to provide assistance to the base population for whatever we can help with, whether that be utilities, electrical, structural or HVAC,” Perez said. “Our squadron is ready for whatever may happen, whenever it happens.”

The unit prioritizes its repairs based on impact to mission success and the safety of Airmen. Repairs are considered in five levels of priority.

“If there is an emergency, we have 24 hours to find a solution,” said Staff Sgt. Nicole Steller, 50th CES requirements and optimization operations manager. “Our priorities are: 3A, 3B, 3C, 4A and 4B. 3A is the highest priority and requires a quick turn, whereas 4B is our lowest level of priority and maybe doesn’t need to be addressed as

“We do welding, masonry, roofing, carpentry, finish-work and lock-smithing. It’s more than just turning a wrench.”

The unit breaks down its maintenance into two categories: preventative maintenance and urgent calls.

“We perform preventative maintenance to prevent equipment or structures from breaking which could cost the Air Force millions of dollars,” Perez said. “An urgent call is

The unit has Airmen ready 24/7, 365 to respond to emergencies that may occur on base. However, it’s important to note the difference between an emergency and an inconvenience.

“I like to constitute emergencies as life, limb or mission,” Perez said. “If the mission is going to fail or someone is going to get hurt, that’s an emergency. If something doesn’t require immediate assistance, please contact your facility manager so they can submit a work task. Don’t cry wolf when there isn’t a wolf.”

If a repair is needed and the unit is unable to respond immediately, Airmen should not try to perform repairs themselves, but instead contact the CES. This is to prevent injury and to ensure the equipment is properly repaired.

The squadron’s Airmen are trained to handle equipment such as grinders and welders and are required to wear the proper safety equipment to avoid injury.

“We train weekly to ensure we’re keeping our Airmen prepared for any situation they may encounter,” Perez said.

“Trainings have included individual combat equipment training, to convoy operations, troop movements, defensive fighting positions and vehicular training because we need to be ready to go anywhere, at any time to support any mission.”

Operators decommission DMSP F-14 after 22 years of service

SUITLAND, Md. — Operators conducted end of life operations on the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Flight 14 Feb. 11 following the satellite’s more than 22 years of service providing global weather data.

DMSP F-14 was launched April 4, 1997 however it was decommissioned after the majority of its instruments became non-operational.

“F14 existed far beyond what any of us could have predicted, which is an incredible feat,” said Arla Tillman, NOAA aerospace engineering technician. “Working with F14, year after year provided many challenges as well as rewards for those of us on crew supporting the mission 24/7/365.”

Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The DMSP constellation is operated by a coalition of mission partners consisting of the NOAA Office of Satellite and Product Operations and the 50th Operations Group Detachment 1, both located in Suitland, Maryland.

Specifically the 50th Operations Group, Detachment 1, a component of the 50th Operations Group from Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, has Satellite Control Authority and delegates nominal day-to-day operations to the NOAA DMSP operators. A backup operations center, operated by the Air Force Reserve’s 6th Space Operations Squadron, is located at Schriever AFB, Colorado.

‘UNITES’ Airmen with initiative

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The 50th Force Support Squadron’s Unite Initiative continues to benefit Airmen and families with its numerous activities and events for its members.

The program provides funds to units to use to help build cohesion through recreational activities and improve morale within the squadrons. It also serves as another tool for commanders to help morale and welfare.

Air Force Services Activity developed the program after Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein challenged the Air Force to improve unity within its squadrons in August 2016 in an open letter to Airmen.

“It’s hard to get away from work, but when they did, we did a great job of

getting to know each other better.”

“It is time to revitalize the squadron as the warfighting core of our Air Force,” Goldfein said in the letter. “Our vision demands that squadrons be highly capable, expeditionary teams who can successfully defend our nation’s interest in both today’s and tomorrow’s complex operating environment.”

Unite is currently in its second of three phases. The first began in 2019 with eligible regular Air Force units at wing-level and below. Phase two of the program, which began in January, will include Phase one and active, reserve and civilians at winglevel and below.

Eric McCullough, 50th FSS community cohesion coordinator, creates various teambonding events for units to choose from and strives to find activities everyone can enjoy.

“What we’re committed to doing is getting the best services or events and activities for the squadrons,” McCullough said.

“That’s the cool piece to the job — finding those activities for the units to do. We’re the keeper of the program in a sense. This is a people-program, so it belongs to us.”

Each unit receives $13.50 per person and $5 per person for food and beverages, which cannont be used to purchase alcohol. Units

can do events that cost more than $13.50 but have to pay the remaining fee out of pocket. The unit can spend those funds once per year.

Although that’s down from $17.50 compared to 2019, Airmen still enjoy the activities out of the office.

“We’ve received good feedback from the units who have held events,” McCullough said. “This year, we want to improve and grow on it. It’s a great opportunity to get offices and flights out of the office and into different environments and get to know each other on a personal level. That’s the key for this.”

Those ventures in 2019 took Airmen to a plethora of activities and events. While some of the activities can occur on base, many also happen elsewhere.

“Units can do Whirly Ball, which is downtown. We go to Vibes baseball games and you get a ticket to the game and a free buffet and you get to sit in VIP seating. We do Switchbacks soccer, Legends mini golf and batting cages and bowling at [United State Air Force Academy],” McCullough said. “They can also create their own event.

They might go downtown and find their own or go somewhere and say, ‘We’d like to do laser tag at this location’ and we can do that as well.”

Janet Cramer, 50th FSS Resource Management flight chief, used Unite funds in January to go bowling with her unit at Whirly Ball.

During the event, Cramer learned about Airmen’s lives outside of the office — an experience that benefitted her as well as the unit.

“It’s hard to get away from work, but when they did, we did a great job of getting to know each other better,” Cramer said.

“We had a friendly competition at bowling, we ate pizza. It was a fun experience.

It was great to get to let our hair down.”

More importantly, Cramer faced no issues using Unite funds to create the activity.

“It was so simple,” Cramer said. “My [information technology] person called and told Eric what we wanted to do. Eric called Whirly Ball and talked to them about prices. He immediately said that he worked with someone there and paid.”

The third phase of the program begins January 2021 and, along with members from the initial phases, will include Air Force headquarters and centers above wing level.

Tuition Assistance Brief

The 50th Force Support Squadron is scheduled to host a tuition assistance brief from 3-4 p.m. March 9 and 27 in Building 210, Room 310. No appointment is required, and the briefing is mandatory for all first-time TA users.

Additionally, any personnel who have not pursued their education in the last year are now required by AFI 36-2649 to have follow-up counseling. This briefing fulfills the requirement.

Informed Decision Course

The 50th Force Support Squadron is scheduled to host an Informed Decision Course 9 a.m.-noon March 31, in Building 210, Room 310. The course is designed to enhance knowledge of Air Force benefits. The goal is to ensure personnel obtain needed information in order to make sound decisions for themselves and their family. First term Airmen and second term Airmen 12-15 months prior to their date of separation are required to attend pending involuntary separation.
