50th Space Wing assists NAVSOC’s mission

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing provides assistance to a Navy detachment with use of its ground stations and satellites at Schriever and it continues to benefit the unit’s mission.

Naval Satellite Operations Center Detachment Delta operates, manages and maintains assigned satellites and ground systems and provides numerous forms of support including space control operations, global space support and space force enhancement.

“Delta operations wouldn’t be possible

without the use of the ground

stations at Schriever AFB.” The detachment assists its headquarters, located in Point Mugu, California, with a portion of those operations throughout the week. Twice per month, however, NAVSOC Det. Delta receives the bulk of headquarters’ work for practice to ensure they can handle the tasks.

“The bottom line is you guys have all kinds of antennas around the world and we can talk to our satellites using some of the ground stations,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Scott Hodgkinson, NAVSOC Det. Delta officer in charge. “We use their ground stations when they slot us in. They slot us in all the time, so we’re always using the Air Force’s assets.”

NAVSOC Det. Delta operations wouldn’t be possible without the use of the ground stations at Schriever AFB due to its ability to communicate for satellites.

Its location at Schriever allows the detachment to correspond efficiently with satellites and serve Point Mugu.

NAVSOC serves as back up should a situation occur at headquarters.

“If anything happens [at Point Mugu] — whether that’s scheduled maintenance or they need to evacuate for fires or something like that — we’re immediately the ones who will take all those operations,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Katie Casey NAVSOC Det. Delta.

That occurred in 2018 and allowed Hodgkinson and his team to assist headquarters during a fire in California.

From Nov. 8-21, 2018, the Woolsey Fire burned nearly 100,000 acres in California and NAVSOC Det. Delta handled operations for Point Mugu for seven days.

“We were able to hold operations for them until they figured out who was safe, who didn’t need to be there and who they could send out for us,” Casey said. “Our operators are trained well so they handled it well. It was a little bit more hectic and there was a little more keeping in contact with different and higher echelons, but that’s something that we have to take over.”

The 50th Space Wing’s assistance continues to help NAVSOC. It’s a bond Hodgkinson is grateful to have at Schriever.

“I feel we have a great relationship with the Air Force,” Hodgkinson said. “We’ve received wonderful support from the 50th [Space Wing]. I’m very blessed to be here and work with those guys. They work well with us and we’ve had no issues whatsoever with them.”

Hodgkinson, who will leave his post at the end of March, hopes to continue the fruitful relationship with the Air Force and is confident operations will continue to run smoothly after his departure.

RESNO AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Calif. — As a senior leader within our organization, one of the things I struggle with most is relating to other generations. I have worked with Airman from the Baby Boomer generation (born from 1946-1964) to Generation Z (born from 1997-2012.)

These Airman are reflective of the changes in our country, and as a result their perspectives can be very different from my own. As I reflect on these different perspectives, work ethic has a significant impact in the organization.

What is work ethic? Work ethic is defined as a belief in work as a moral good: a set of values centered on the importance of doing work and reflected especially in a desire or determination to work hard.

By definition, work ethic is a set of values. I see good work ethic by someone who shows up on time, every day, ready to work. It’s someone who does their job to the best of their ability and is willing to work to better the organization. There are several traits that can lead to good work ethic: appearance, attendance, attitude, character, communication, cooperation, integrity, productivity and respect.

The opposite of work ethic includes negative traits: lack of productivity, procrastination, rushing through a job, lack of integrity, lack quality and work, not wanting to better the team or organization.

Work ethic is a complex idea to wrap your mind around because it is rooted in a set of values. These sets of values vary from one person to another based on your upbringing. For

me, my values were instilled in me by my father, who was from the Baby Boomer generation. Throughout my life, he told me to always be honest and fair with others. He also emphasized that the product or service you produce will have your name on it, and although someone might not know you personally, they will know what your work stands for. Keep in mind my father was raised by a man who grew up during The Great Depression, when most people had no money, job or home.

They only had their name and work ethic to show who they were. As I look at our organization today, we must realize we are an evolving Air Force. We must be aware that our set of

values may vary from one person to another, and it is important for us to not pass judgement on others based on our values.

When evaluating a person’s work ethic, it can be easy to allow our values to affect our judgement of their work ethic.

Our older generation of Airmen see work ethic as long days and weeks of hard work and dedication. Generation Z Airmen view work ethic as being more efficient and trying new tactics to solve problems and produce a better product. continued page 7 | LEADERSHIP

17th Test Squadron executes

ONE-OF-A-KIND MISSION

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 17th Test Squadron enhances warfighter lethality and survivability through operational testing and evaluation of space capabilities to ensure space superiority.

Though the 17th TS, headquartered here, has detachments and operating locations spread throughout different bases, its mission is unique.

“As far as space tests go, we’re one of only a few,” said Tech. Sgt. James Smith, 17th TS noncommissioned officer in charge of plans and programs. “Out of the entire 53rd Wing and Air Force Warfare Center, we’re the only space test organization.”

The 17th TS tests most of the equipment and systems associated with the space mission in the restricted area.

“After an assessment, we file a report that covers the good, the bad and the ugly,” Smith said.

“We then send a report out to Space Force.

After that, it’s up to Space Force leadership to determine whether they’d like to accept the equipment we just completed an assessment for or not.”

The 17th TS’ Operating Location-Charlie conducts testing on the base’s higher classification systems. Tech. Sgt. Tricia Benson, 17th TS OL-C flight chief and project man-

ager, said the unit is focused on testing electronic warfare.

“Each detachment and operating location has slightly different missions,” Benson said. “Recent tests we’ve done have been on the Bounty Hunter and the Counter Communications System, which are both electronic warfare systems located at Peterson [Air Force Base].”

Benson said after completing testing, all of their operating locations and detachments follow the same processes for consistency in their reports. The squadron’s assessments ensure the capabilities the government requires for each system are met.

“Without us, we could get any system you could think of, in any quality,” Benson said. “We want our brothers and sisters to have the best they possibly can, and that’s our job: to tell them the facts and what does or does not work, and what capabilities are out there for a system.”

The squadron also plays a role in the development of

systems that can take more than a decade to make. The companies who design the equipment take input from the operators and the developmental reports, and use the feedback to shape the system into its operationally accepted state.

“Ultimately, our goal is to test the system the most operationally relevant way we can and deliver a timely, accurate and unbiased assessment of some of the most complex and costly space systems,” she said.

Benson said the squadron has been working on a program called the Weapons System Evaluation Program COMBAT MACE. The exercises conducted will evaluate weapons systems and tactics effectiveness and survivability, and have a specific space focus. If Airmen have new ideas, they can now be tested in an exercise before going live to see if it’ll be effective down range for the warfighter.

“Space has been a part of a lot of past exercises, but always in the background,” she said. “And with the contested space environment, I think WSEP [COMBAT MACE] is important. We have to be smarter, we have to use our technology better. We have a ton of young, smart Airmen coming up with new ideas, so why not listen to them? Now we can test them and make ourselves better. I think it’s an awesome program and I can’t wait to see it developed.”

Schriever welcomes new career assistance advisor

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron gained a new career assistance advisor to help Airmen navigate their careers and set them up for long-term success.

Filling the role of CAA for Team Schriever since Jan. 28 is Master Sgt. Kathryn North, former 21st Medical Squadron radiology flight chief at Peterson Air Force Base.

“Her job is to provide career assistance and advice to the enlisted force,” said James Driscoll, 50th Force Support Squadron education center flight chief. “A lot of times, Airmen and NCOs go through and do their jobs every day, and although they’re receiving mentorship from their supervisors, they’re not getting long-term mentorship on how to better their career and that’s why the career assistance advisor is here.”

Additionally, the CAA helps Airmen looking to separate from the Air Force prepare for long-term success.

“The career assistance advisor helps [Airmen] understand there’s nothing wrong with having a plan and getting out — but get out with success,” Driscoll said.

North’s duties include advising commanders and supervisors on force management, conducting professional enhancement courses for NCOs, senior NCOs and company grade officers, and coordinating the Flight Commander’s and Informed Decisions courses.

“I think there are a lot of things supervisors don’t know or haven’t learned,” she said. “It’s important we get info out to them through the courses we offer, because if we inform those individuals, they inform others which leads to a more informed force.”

Despite recognizing her passion for helping Airmen grow in their careers, it was four more years before she applied for the CAA position here.

“When I came back to the career field after teaching, I found that same passion with my Airmen, but I had a small shop,” North said. “So I felt if I was given an opportunity to do a job like this, I could have a greater impact across an installation instead of just my little shop.”

Despite working primarily for the enlisted force, the career assistance advisor is also available to civilians and officers.

The 50th Force Support Squadron welcomed a new career assistance advisor who will provide advice to Schriever Airmen regardless of or rank. Master Sgt. Kathryn North previously worked as a technical training instructor where she said she found her passion for helping Airmen grow in their careers.

“I’m here as a resource for all of Team Schriever,” she said. “Even if I don’t know an answer, that doesn’t mean I can’t go find it or find someone who can help.”

One of North’s primary concerns is to reach more Airmen across the installation to include bringing her courses to the restricted area.

“Right now, I’m trying to get a pulse on the hot items

for Team Schriever,” she said. “I want to update our material to reflect any feedback we have. I think breathing fresh air into material and taking feedback seriously will be impactful. I don’t want to stick with, ‘this is how we’ve always done it,’ because the population and its needs are continually growing.”

NASA Astronaut Col. Nick Hague visits Schriever Airmen

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Col. Nick Hague, NASA astronaut for space expeditions 59 and 60 last year, visited Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Feb. 5, 2020.

During his visit, Hague met with roughly 40 Ellicott School District students and shared his experiences from living on the International Space Station, generating interest in “out of this world” related career fields for the next generation.

“We’re going to see the very best NASA has to offer.”

“Being able to help [younger generations] see they can have an impact on the world around them is so beneficial,” he said. “Every one of them has value. Inspiring them to chase their passions, to be part of something larger than themselves, it makes the community stronger.”

Hague also toured several Schriever units to learn more about how their missions support the space station mission.

“Without the support the 50th Space Wing provides, we couldn’t do the mission on the space station,” Hague said.

Capt. Josh Harnisch, 2nd Space Operations Squadron Global Positioning System operations flight commander, said the space station relies on GPS for determining both its position and orientation in space, which ties into controlling the solar arrays that provide electricity to the space station.

“In 2nd SOPS, we focus a lot on ensuring we provide the absolute best position, navigation and timing signal possible, because we know our mission enables both military operations and large swaths of the global civilian economy,” he said. “Knowing that it’s also tightly integrated into human exploration adds an additional level of gravity to what we do on a day-to-day basis.”

To finish his visit, Hague shared his perspective on the importance of our mission with members of Team Schriever at the Event Center. He also touched on the “future of space,” NASA’s Artemis program.

The Artemis program is projected to land the first woman and the next man on the Moon by 2024, using new technologies to explore more of the lunar surface.

“What we do in the space station — performing scientific experiments, trying to understand things for the benefit of everybody on the ground, regardless of where they’re from — that’s something that we depend on with services that the 50th Space Wing, the [U.S.] Space Force, provide,” he said. “It wouldn’t be possible without them; they make it happen. Where it’s going to grow in the future is where we start launching from U.S. soil again and we’re going to see Airmen launching Airmen. We’re going to see the very best NASA has to offer.”

Along with Maj. Caitlin Reilly, the Air Force Academy honored Hague with its Col. James Jabara Award for Airmanship. The award recognizes academy graduates “whose accomplishments demonstrate superior performance in fields directly involved with aerospace vehicles.”

In conjunction with the Jabara family and the Association of Graduates, USAFA established the Col. James Jabara Award for Airmanship Jan. 5, 1967. Each major air command, field operating agency and direct reporting unit may submit one nomination for the award.

“An event like that changes you,” Hague said. “I learned two life lessons from it. The first one is we don’t survive on our own. On that day, Alexey and I were in the capsule, but we relied on the ground team to talk us through the emergency procedures and make sure we did everything correctly. The second thing is, you don’t recover from something like this alone. Getting back, trying to digest what happened and coming back to your loved ones and support network, that’s something that helps you bounce back from a setback like this.”

Airmen can apply Hague’s lessons learned to setbacks they may face here on Earth.

“There are setbacks we all face throughout our lives, and I realized we don’t go through these things on our own, we don’t survive on our own, and we don’t recover on our own,” he said. “That recovery allowed me, 154 days later, to strap into a rocket and give it another try. And this time, it was flawless.”

A lot can be said for hard work and long hours spent at work to finish a project or solve a problem; it shows that someone is committed to the organization. However, why not take advantage of technology and innovative ideas to work more efficiently and produce a superior product, which adds value to our organization.

Every Airman in this wing is a vital component to its mission. Every person brings a set of skills and talents that we

should harness to continue the work we do. Personally, I have challenged myself [every day] to not make assumptions based on my values, be explicit in the communications of my expectations and call upon the strengths of my Airmen to continue our mission.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing Equal Opportunity office is responsible for promoting diversity and inclusion for the workforce within the units, promoting a healthy work climate for all personnel here.

“We are not only just promoting healthy human relations,” said Staff Sgt. LaToya Walker, 50th SW EO advisor.

“We also put on special observances to highlight certain cultures and educate personnel on different cultures and ethnicities that exist throughout our military.”

“I think our diversity is one of the driving factors making us a strong force.”

The team also includes: Edward Vaughn, 50th SW EO chief and Tech. Sgt. Darren Woods, 50th EO noncommissioned officer in charge. The role the team carries out is far-reaching when it comes to enhancing mission readiness, but one area where they see the fruits of their work is in the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute Equal Opportunity Climate Survey.

“Giving valuable feedback to leadership so they can have an actual visual representation of where their unit is at is important,” Walker said. “Everything within the climate assessment is going to affect the mission in one way area or another, whether its connection, job satisfaction or problem areas with individuals feeling they are not a part of the team.

The whole point is to get to where we can all complete the missions and be effective.”

The team enforces the Air Force’s zero tolerance policy in regards to discrimination. “There’s no room for it at all in the Air Force,” Walker said. “We have a diverse force.

We have members from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds. I think our diversity is one of the driving factors making us a strong force.”

One of the ways the team encourages acceptance of the diverse force is through special observances.

“We are starting to work on Diversity Day and should be observing Days of Remembrance in April,” Walker said.
