Brosseau, Ross win 19th annual Turkey Trot

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Maj. Jason Brosseau, 26th Space Aggressors Squadron, captured his third consecutive victory in the men’s category at the 19th annual Turkey Trot on base Nov. 20, and Master Sgt. Bonnie Ross, 7th Space Operations Squadron, earned her first victory in the women’s division.

Brosseau finished first out of 44 runners and clocked in at 13 minutes, 48 seconds. Ross finished in 22:02 in the 2.5-mile race.

The top three male and female finishers earned $50, $40 and $30 gift cards, and all participants received T-shirts.

The race followed the “wing run” route, which begins north of the batting cages and continues west on the running trail then north along the perimeter fence line.

The route then wraps along the housing area and back to the start.

During the first mile, Brosseau said Santiago Trujillo, who placed second, kept the field on their toes.

“Usually when somebody goes off fast, you don’t know if they’re serious or not,” Brosseau said. “We knew about half a mile in that [Trujillo] meant business. His first mile was a 5:22.”

The major ran a 5:28 and thought Trujillo would end his two-race win streak. Brosseau, however, used his savvy to excel the final 1.5 miles.

“I took the lead right when the wind shifted to a headwind,” Brosseau said. “I knew if I didn’t open up, he’d get the best of me. I put in a surge and made [Trujillo and me] work equally on that headwind.”

In previous events such as the base’s annual half marathon, which Brosseau also won three times in a row, Brosseau held sizable leads. After eclipsing Trujillo, however, Brosseau said he looked back more than normal to ensure he was clear.

“You can’t help but think that he could rally and outkick me if he’s feeling good,” Brosseau said. “The kid definitely had wheels and I had to look over my shoulders to make sure he didn’t sneak up on me that last half mile.”

For the women, Ross staved off her competition, but not without her own difficulties.

Ross finished more than 40 seconds ahead of Jennifer Anthony, who placed second among female competitors, but Ross said she struggled on the back end of the race.

“Every time I thought I’d hit a second wind and thought I could sprint, another hill would come up,” Ross said. “It looked like [the hills] hit everyone else pretty hard, too.”

While the race proved tough and provided a workout for Ross, she said the low-key nature of the event made it more enjoyable. Arriving to compete without having to complete forms and being able to run with fellow Wingmen provided a necessary boost.

“I didn’t think the run would happen because of the weather and there weren’t a lot of people on base [Friday],” Ross said. “I’m excited that they did [the race] and people showed up to compete.”

AF ALCONBURY, England — This time last year we did not know. We gathered with friends and family for a feast in the name of thankfulness without awareness of what 2020 would have in store. What did 2020 usher? For starters, hardship, isolation and the beloved face mask.

Who would have guessed we would have toilet paper shortages, restricted travel and physical distancing?

For most, 2020 meant canceling vacations and temporarily separating from friends; for others, 2020 brought grief over loved ones’ sicknesses or even death from COVID-19.

But 2020 gave us more than loss, fear and anxiety. We were given a rare opportunity. We were forced to whittle away excess, sit in isolation and focus on that which remained.

So, how did we respond to the pruning? It’s easy to feel bitter, angry, or somewhat robbed.

It does not have to be this way. Let’s explore how we can intentionally combat our negative attitudes and avoid becoming toxic “Debbie Downers”.

According to a recent publication from Harvard Medical School, giving thanks may be one of the simplest remedies to a sour attitude. Psychologists Dr. Robert A. Emmons and Dr.

The researchers had one group of participants journal what they were grateful for each week. A second group documented daily irritations or what displeased them. Lastly, a third group noted events that affected them without highlighting negative or positive feelings. After 10 weeks, the researchers found those who wrote about gratitude were more optimistic, felt

Another study by Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman tested the impact of several positive physiological interventions on 411 people.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— A charitable season arrives as the Peterson-Schriever Garrison’s Combined Federal Campaign runs through Dec. 18 and will continue online until Jan. 15, 2021.

“After brain surgery at nine-years old and monthly infusions for three years, White said his daughter is

now a healthy high school student.”

The campaign allows federal employees to donate a portion of their income to a variety of organizations of their choice.

“For more than 60 years, federal employees and military personnel have contributed in excess of $8 billion to the CFC, that is a real impact,” said Col. James Smith, Peterson-Schriever Garrison commander. “And I’d like our team to be a part of continuing the giving.”

This year there is an alternative to monetary donations.

able to support them financially, you can donate hours of volunteer time to those organizations.”

While White donates to the CFC, it has

also helped him and his family in the past.

His daughter has antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation within one’s veins, causing blood clots and strokes.

Through the CFC, White was able to access the Make-A-Wish Foundation, one of the organizations within the campaign.

When his daughter was seven-years old, she spent a day with Princess Jasmine at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and participated in other family events due to her life-threatening syndrome. “[The CFC] was huge for her because she was able to just get away from the constant blood draws, infusions, tests and people poking and prodding her all the time,” said White. “It allowed her to just be a kid, and also be around other kids who deal with similar stuff.”

The CFC is an easy way to have an impact on people beyond immediate reach with almost 200 CFC campaigns within the country and overseas, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s website.

letter of gratitude to someone he or she had never properly thanked for an act of kindness. The participants immediately exhibited substantial increases in happiness and the benefits of this activity lasted for a month.

So what do we do now that we have this information?

Obviously, showing gratitude is good for us and can improve our outlook on the bleakest of situations. We would be wise to make giving thanks a regular ritual.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite celebrations of the year and not just because of the turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, and assortment of desserts. It calls us back to the spiritual discipline of giving thanks. Our soul should be filled with gratitude at all times, not just when we are enjoying the best meal of the year.

Every day we ought to express our

gratitude for the multitude of blessings in our lives. Charles Dickens, who penned A Christmas Carol, encouraged us to, “Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.”

But how can we practice gratitude on a daily basis? Allow me to share a simple yet refreshing solution.

Most of us enjoy a steaming cup of coffee in the morning (or tea for my British friends). We brew or steep this liquid gold, take the first sip and a wave of gratitude instantly swells. What if we tacked on an effortless ritual to our morning beverage routine?

While enjoying your morning pickme-up, I encourage you to intentionally name one additional thing for which you’re thankful: the companionship of a loved one, steady income, a package notification email, last night’s Call of Duty win, or whatever comes to mind.

Perhaps sowing gratitude, even this minor tweak to your morning routine, will harvest a steady attitude of giving thanks.

Airman and Family Readiness Center hosts Right Start

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center will host its Right Start program the third Thursday of each month from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the event center.

Right Start is a mandatory briefing within 30 days of arrival at Schriever for Airmen and anyone with Department of Defense affiliation. The A&FRC also highly encourages spouses and family members to attend.

“Right Start orientation is designed to set up newcomers for success and gives them the information they need without having to travel all around base,” said Lawanda Ervin, A&FRC community readiness consultant.

“It also gives service members the opportunity to meet one-on-one with the [mission support group] commander to learn the vision of the new Peterson-Schriever Garrison command and to answer any questions or concerns [Airmen and civilians] may have.”

While Schriever has moved to 50% manning to adhere to recent COVID-19 guidelines, Ervin assured the briefers and staff will mind the well-being of those who attend.

“We are definitely enforcing all the proper guidelines with COVID measures,” Ervin said. “We are continuing to [physical] distance, wear masks, sanitize and take all the

necessary precautionary guidelines to ensure safety.”

Andrea Hernandez, A&FRC chief, said the Schriever program continues to evolve.

Right Start, which Hernandez said has exist-

ed since she started at Schriever — nearly 20 years ago — continues to highlight the importance of various functions around base.

“Knowing what’s on the base and putting a face with an organization is really

important,” Hernandez said. “Knowing what [organizations] provide so [Airmen] aren’t trying to figure out where to get certain assistance and knowing how to find those organizations is important.”

The program benefitted Hernandez during her spouse’s temporary duty assignment to Italy. Hernandez used Right Start to acclimate herself to the culture and the base.

“We were brand new to the Air Force and it was our first overseas base,” Hernandez said. “[Right Start] provided an understanding and I knew what certain organizations did. The program helps Airmen learn how to find assistance if you need it, especially when you’re new to the Air Force or it’s your first time overseas.”

Many Airmen, civilians and families find themselves in Hernandez’s shoes when overseas, which is why Ervin feels the program is necessary.

“At Right Start, you meet new people and you gather valuable information on housing, employment medical and dental contacts and information on the local community,” Ervin said. “I feel it is necessary in gathering all the resources you need to have a healthier lifestyle being stationed at a duty location.”

“Now five years later we have a Service and a combatant command … it’s an absolute extraordinary time to be a space professional, we are making history every single day in the space enterprise.”

The group’s field study included COVID-compliant stops at Vandenberg, Buckley and Peterson Air Force Bases.

“The greatest challenge has been finding ways to build meaningful relationships with my peers despite the myriad of COVID restrictions currently in play. Relationships are important, especially as we each learn how the other Services perceive and employ space power. Space is critical to our joint warfighting posture and it’s a multi-domain effort with every Service having a role,” Roberts said.

The seminar is resonating with students and paving the way for future space studies.

“The Space Force is beginning to engage in professional military education for its senior officers and we hope to grow our PME to meet the needs of the [Chief of Space Operations], our joint and coalition partners,” said Drake. “[This group of students] are taking their role as future senior space leaders seriously and are providing critical constructive feedback to make the program better for those who come after.”

This term is nearing its end. After the winter break, these students will join their AWC counterparts in Regional Security Studies, second-term electives, Theater Strategy and Campaigning, and end the year with Global Security Studies…all with an eye toward how the concepts apply in the space domain and link back to enhance joint power in the other domains.

STAR provides solace for space operators

— Every day, space operators put on their uniforms and complete tasks critical to the nation’s security. With such pivotal responsibilities, pressure and stress mount quickly, which is why the Space Team for Airman Resilience was formed.

“The STAR [offers] a phenomenal opportunity to care for our space profes-

sionals in an operational manner that is focused on being embedded with the units’ members,” said Capt. David Sidnam, STAR chaplain.

Sidnam said STAR was inspired by the Special Operation Command’s Preservation of the Force and Family (POTFF) model.

According to their website, the POTFF was built to implement a holistic approach to address pressure on the force.

“We want to encourage Airmen and empower them to be resilient by caring for themselves,” Sidnam said. “We have space operators who are on crew, have unique schedules and challenging [operations] tempos – it’s important we cater to what they need so they’re able to do their jobs more effectively.”

The STAR team serves units in Deltas 8 and 9 and the 3rd Space Experimentation Squadron, so they’re able to host multiple reoccurring events to boost morale among space operators. The most popular being the Wednesday therapy dog visits, when a team of dogs visit Delta 8, 9 and the 3rd SES, offering Airmen a break from work.

“Our goal is to be a part of the family – a part of [the space operators’] units,” Beutler said. “If they think we’re just a part of the clinic or chapel corps, then we’ve failed our mission. We care for you, we are here for you, come and say hi!”

NOPS celebrates 20th anniversary

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The National Reconnaissance Office Operations Squadron recently celebrated its 20th anniversary here.

Lt. Col. Roland Rainey, NOPS commander led a virtual event to celebrate the historical occasion, which had more than 70 NOPSaffiliated attendees from across the United States. The squadron recognized the members with the longest and shortest service times in the unit, highlighted some of the unit’s accomplishments from the past 20 years and the leadership team cut a cake commemorate the achievement.

“This is an incredible milestone for our squadron and a testament to the hard work the men and women of the NOPS contribute every day,” Rainey said. “I look forward to what the future holds for our organization.”

Since its inception, the unit has prided itself on employing critical tracking, telemetry and connectivity while serving as the single NRO interface to the Air Force Satellite Control Network.

“That year (2000) we had a few NRO user

satellite programs and supported one launch mission,” said Mark Baggett, NOPS systems engineering and technical assistance contractor, who has worked in the squadron for more than 15 years. “We currently have over a dozen NRO and are on pace to support a record 30 launch missions this year.”

Additionally, the NOPS has collected performance data on 260 launches for the NRO, Department of Defense, civilian agencies such as NASA and commercial industries through agreements with the U.S. Space Force.

Moving forward, Rainey said the NOPS plans to develop robust operational and integration capabilities to meet the increasing demands placed on the National Reconnaissance Office and the Office of Space Launch directorate by mission partners in order to achieve national security objectives.

Baggett said the unit is one of many squadrons on Schriever who come together to serve the nation in their own way.

“I feel honored to be a part of this unit for the mission it accomplishes,” Baggett said. “I am fortunate to have been able to be a part of it for so long.”

The Air Force will be shifting to Next Gen IDs for dependents and no longer ship additional orders of the previous ID card stock. To make the current stock last, the MPF will be prioritizing issuance of dependent IDs, only new dependents who have experience a change in status will be issue a card at this time. An exception for expired dependent IDs has been extended to June 30, 2021, with memo in hand that is provided

TYA premium increase
