UAM TRACKING STATION — Greetings to the 50th Space Wing family from Guam, “Where America’s space ops day begins.” Though I may not get to see you all as often as I’d like, it is an honor to be a part of such an impressive and winning team.

Some aspects I enjoy most about being in the Air Force are the tremendous people you meet and the wide variety of duties and experiences you can have in a short amount of time. When I got to Guam in June 2018, I could barely catch a lizard in my house — now, I safely return at least five per week to the wild.

In all seriousness, working at Guam Tracking Station has meant so much to me — the 21st Space Operations Squadron Detachment 2 team is stellar. The level of loyalty and dedication to the mission these professionals exhibit every day is a constant motivator for me to do my best. Thankfully, this is a common theme during my time in the service: the people and teams are tremendous and it is amazing to witness what they accomplish when they work toward a common goal. I’m not only talking about uniformed members, but our government civilians and contractor mission partners as well. Time and time again my expectations are exceeded.

I would have little reason to share this with you if not for the fact that, by my observation, positive thinking is a real and powerful force-multiplier, especially when exercised by leaders. Very little can have such a profound uplifting impact

on an organization. Conversely, negativity is, if anything, more powerful and should be handled cautiously.

These days we are bombarded with information about infinite topics, most of which trend toward the negative. I caution Airmen to consider the effect this negative information may have on our personal outlooks and approaches to leadership.

When I reflect on the people I know and have worked with, several stand out as being unwaveringly positive in their outlook and leadership style. These individuals consistently and seemingly magnetically drew success and the best outcomes to their undertakings.

“Can we be successful? Positively yes!”

The famous author and optimist Norman Vincent Peale said it perfectly in “The Power of Positive Thinking:” “It is amazing how a sustained expectation of the best sets in motion forces which cause the best to materialize.”

As effective leaders and followers, we must undertake all things with an earnest and deliberately positive expectation of the best. Identify the negativity you are exposed to daily and do not let it shape you or your team. We have the best and brightest people working together for the finest, most capable military in the world. Can we be successful?

Free shuttle service provides Schriever community rides

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The on-base shuttle service outside the restricted area has been extended until Jan. 31 and will transport members around the base.

“The base shuttle service is intended to help Team Schriever personnel get to activities such as medical appointments, briefings, meetings and physical training activities outside the restricted area,” said Col. Brian Kehl, 50th Mission Support Group commander.

The Shuttle operates 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, family days and base closures.

Stops include the North restricted area portal, 50th Space Wing Headquarters/ medical clinic, fitness center, 310th Space Wing Headquarters, U.S. Air Force Warfare Center, and the West restricted area portal. The shuttle map and timetable can be found on the 50th SW page on the AF Connect App. “The shuttle bus allows riders quick access to transportation around Schriever AFB without having to walk or give up prime parking spots, especially during inclement weather,” Kehl said.

The shuttle service started on a trial run basis Oct. 1 and was initially scheduled to end Nov. 15, but given increased ridership, the trial period was extended until Jan. 31.

“We saw increased ridership as people began to realize the shuttle bus was a viable option to get to places outside the restricted area,” Kehl said.

The 50th Logistics Readiness Flight manages the shuttle program, but the 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron provides the bus and the drivers.

“There are loads of ways a shuttle service can be useful,” said Airman 1st Class Katie Naquin, 50th Force Support Squadron customer service apprentice.

“Airmen who don’t have cars, don’t want to use gas or aren’t comfortable walking across the base in the cold weather now have a free alternative.”

Staying out of inclement and cold weather isn’t only convenient, but it can help keep Airmen healthy and mission ready by providing protection from the elements.

“This acknowledges one of the primary issues for Schriever Airmen — transportation,” Naquin said. “The leadership didn’t have to do anything about it, but they did and I appreciate that.”

4th SOPS stays proactive, optimizes manpower

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 4th Space Operations Squadron is transitioning shift manning to increase unit efficiency.

The unit will transfer terminal operator duties to the Advanced Extremely High Frequency Mission Control Sub-system operator. The TO is a position on the space crew that operates the terminal linking the satellite to the AEHF command and control system located on the operations floor “These operators ensure a successful connection in order to communicate with our 10 protected [military satellite communications] assets,” said Capt. Dustin Soriano, 4th SOPS communications flight commander. “ASMCS is the ground segment system used for command and control and over-the-air rekey requests that service more than 1,900 strategic and tactical users. From there, the command and control gets fed through the terminal to the satellite.”

Steve Baize, 4th SOPS payload management director, said the unit uses two different satellite communications terminals to connect and communicate with the MILSTAR and AEHF satellites. The terminals are the family of advanced beyond line of sight terminal and the AEHF calibrations facility interim command and control terminal.

“The ASMCS operators being trained to operate both terminals will save manpower for the space mission crew, consolidate bodies and decrease our footprint on the operations floor, while optimizing manpower utilization throughout the squadron,” he said.

currently has nine ASMCS operators. Prior to the next rotation, the on-coming AMSCS operators will receive academic and TO hands-on training to eliminate the need for a dedicated TO position.

“Operating the SATCOM terminals on the 4 SOPS operations floor is a skill that may never be performed by the communications personnel again in their careers,” Baize said. “The transfer of the TO duties allows them to become better technicians.”

“This process will be seamless and transparent

to the users.”

The terminals enable the armed forces to execute nuclear command and control missions, provide secured communications with satellites, execute missions supporting the president and secretary of defense, and support missions for the military to perform tactical operations.

“By optimizing the manpower of the space crew, we’re able to continue to evolve our space superiority and utilize our space technicians in more efficient ways,” Soriano said. “This process will be seamless and transparent to the users.”

The 4th SOPS stays mission ready 24/7 by operating the Air Force’s protected and wideband MILSATCOM systems, providing warfighters global, secure, survivable strategic and tactical communication during peacetime and throughout the full spectrum of conflict.

Air Force Weapons School graduates first cadre of Space Warfighters

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — Six enlisted Airmen made history Nov. 14, becoming the first cadre and graduates of the 1C6 Space Warfighter Advanced Instructor Course at the U.S. Air Force Weapons School, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.

“These initial cadre are postured to produce the most highly-trained

enlisted space instructors.”

The Air Force Space Command U.S. Air Force Weapons School met Nov. 29, 2018, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, to select the most talented and experienced Airmen across five space wings and headquarters AFSPC. Airmen selected were: Master Sgt. Mark David Tomasetti Tech. Sgt. Jeffrey Clement Tech Sgt. Lane Dorenbusch Tech. Sgt. Anthony Hallford Tech. Sgt. Aaron Christopher Hensley Tech. Sgt. Roberto Cruz Hero The Airmen selected to develop the Space Warfighter AIC received notification from their commands in December 2018, traveled to Nellis AFB and began work on the course in January. The Space Warfighter AIC is an instructor course providing advanced academic and practical training to plan, employ and integrate space capabilities into joint operations.

“These initial cadre are postured to produce the most highly-trained enlisted space instructors,” said Chief Master Sgt. Laurie Bach, USAFWS superintendent.

To become certified instructors, each Airman had to move through their curriculum, completing tasks as a student. The five-month course challenged the initial AIC team to improve problem solving and leadership skills as well as technical abilities.

“The AIC team is eager to begin teaching the next group of future AIC graduates,” said Master Sgt. Mark Tomasetti, 328th Weapons Squadron superintendent. “They are already

incredible space operators, but rigorous [course] academics, advanced analysis concepts, and mission planning exercises will enable them to educate and mentor the next generation of space operators like never before.”

With the exception of the initial cadre, Space Warfighter AIC graduates will return to their units to develop advanced training exercises, advise commanders on tactical employment and space crew operations, and conduct mission planning cells to address legitimate threats, said Bach.

50th FSS to host Children’s Holiday Fest

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron is hosting the annual Children’s Holiday Festival 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 7 at the base fitness center.

“The Children’s Holiday Fest is a four hour event for Schriever families to celebrate the holidays, to relax and have a good time with free entertainment and events,” said Eric McCullough, 50th FSS community cohesion coordinator.

McCullough said the unit is expecting more than 1,200 people to attend the annual event and the event caters to younger children and their families.

However, there is no age limit to the event and any member of Team Schriever can attend.

“Building resilience starts individually but families have a huge impact on that,” he said. “This event isn’t only for the Airmen but for the families. You can bring out your kids and have a good time, this is an event that can help recharge our force.”

The event will feature hot chocolate and complimentary cookies offered and food trucks will be available if families want to purchase food.

“We’re hoping this year is bigger and better than ever before,” said Nichole Clairmont, 50th FSS sponsorship coordinator. “We’re going to have more events for kids to participate in and enjoy.”

The attractions at the event include: • DJ Phoenix • Face painting • Balloon artists • Caricature artists • Petting zoo with goats, sheep and rabbits • Cheyenne Mountain Zoo small critter exhibit • Pony rides • Food trucks • Archery booth • Photo booth Additionally, a superhero will be at the event from 10 a.m. — noon and Santa will be there from noon — 2 p.m.

Children will also be able to make crafts at Santa’s workshop to include an elf picture frame and a miniature Christmas tree ornament.

“We plan to have some contests for prizes, we plan to have an ugly sweater contest, superhero costume contest and a Christmas tree dress up contest where contestants will have two minutes to dress someone as a Christmas tree,” Clairmont said.

Every family will receive a free ornament and there will also be a prize giveaway, prizes include a T.V. and gift cards.

The squadron hosts four major events every year: Summer Slam, Children’s Holiday Festival, Breakfast with the Bunny and Oktoberfest to build resilience among Airmen and their families.

Drones are a no-go at Schriever

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Commercial drones are a popular hobby and gift — with the holidays approaching, Team Schriever members are reminded they are not allowed to operate drones at Schriever Air Force Base.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, unmanned aircraft systems, commonly known as drones, are defined as an aircraft operated and controlled without a human on board and there are guidelines in place for use.

“UAS guidelines come from FAA part 107 guidelines, as well as base-specific guidance,” Tech.

Jeremy Brown, 50th Security Forces Squadron area supervisor said. “Schriever specific guidelines come from a memorandum policy letter from the 50th Space Wing commander prohibiting use of UAS on Schriever AFB.” Master Sgt. Jerald Harris, 50th SFS operations noncommissioned officer in charge, said drones are different than manned aircraft, and introducing them into the airspace presents challenges for the aviation communi-

ties, the FAA and law enforcement agencies.

“The increase in popularity has added a new element to security concerns,” he said. “The challenge with drones is you don’t know the motive or intentions of the operator.”

Drones can be used to gather intelligence and some have the capability of delivering explosive ordnances.

“Some drones can fly at high altitudes and speeds, making them extremely difficult to identify or even see at times,” said Harris.

Harris said 50th SFS can’t do it alone. The unit also needs support from personnel on Schriever AFB to assist with detecting drones.

“If anyone observes a UAS, even if you’re not completely sure of its identity, report it immediately to 50th SFS at 719-567-6464,” Harris said. “Counter measures are in place to detect, deter and defeat any UAS on or above Schriever AFB.” Brown advised as people look for gift ideas and consider drones to do their research.

“Learn about the UAS and its capabilities,” Brown said. “I would also advise to always follow the rules and be safe. Visit the FAA website and review regulations part 107.”

Chapel Office hosts Angel Tree giving collection

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The 50th Space Wing Chaplain’s office is partnering with the Ellicott School District and first sergeants to support community children through the Angel Tree program.

The program is an annual toy and clothing drive for children on base that runs through Dec. 17.

“Here we use a Christmas tree decorated with angels or satellites cards, where people can pick up a card with information about a child they can sponsor with a gift for Christmas this year,” Maj. Martin Adamson, 50th SW chaplain said.

The cards on the tree do not reveal the recipient of the gift, but they do about the child’s age and gender.

“Once [we receive] the names of members from the local community and the base, we create angel tree tags with minimal personal information,” Staff Sgt. Lathaniel Bryant, 50th SW religious affairs noncommissioned officerin-charge. “We as the chapel staff have created a coded system to track the list of names submitted. Once a tag is chosen from one of the two trees our office is contacted and at that point we share with the donator the size of clothes as well as the interests, wants, or needs of the particular child. This process ensures privacy is guarded.”

Schriever’s chapel team, first sergeants and volunteers will collect gifts from those who participate and wrap them for delivery to families on the installation and students in the Ellicott School District.

“We still have angels on the tree right now, but eventually those will run out,” Adamson said. “There are always people coming by our office and asking if we have any more angels.”

Once gifts are collected, the chapel team will have a gift wrapping party in the chapel resource room in Building 300.

“If anyone would like to come to the wrapping party, we will be set up in the resource room to wrap gifts and deliver them later in the week,” said Adamson.

He went on to add he believes the program itself helps foster the connection between Schriever Airmen and the Ellicott community.

“This program can help the local community realize we’re a part of their community and we have Airmen who want to help too,” he said.

Last year, Schriever Airmen supported 54 families in the local community through the Angel Tree program, the most sponsored by the base yet.

“We have really generous Airmen here,” Adamson said. “Everyone wants to help out, especially this time of year, and our Airmen are no different. They want to help to bring a little joy into somebody’s life.”

Adamson said there are two angel trees on base decorated with candy canes, angels and bells. “We have angel trees set up in the Building 210 Atrium and right outside the dining facility in Building 300,” he said.

“Anyone can sponsor a child by going and picking out a card.”

Stay healthy during winter

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — As the weather gets colder, Airmen must stay healthy to execute the mission.

“In cold weather, the risk of getting a cough, cold, sore throat or the flu rises,” said Master Sgt. Kevin Kramer, 21st Medical Squadron flight chief. “To combat this, we advise Airmen to wash their hands frequently. Doing this kills a lot of germs and can prevent them from spreading.”

Additionally, by cleaning keyboards, desks, phones, steering wheels, rooms and other frequented areas and items can help create a cleaner and healthier environment.

“Dressing appropriately for the weather is important,” Kramer said. “Wearing a fleece, hat and gloves can help keep Airmen healthy and can help prevent illness.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, healthy adults can infect others one day before flu symptoms develop and up to five to seven days after becoming sick. The flu vaccine cannot cause the flu

illness and the CDC recommends everyone six months or older receive the shot.

“Don’t be a hero,” he said. “If you’re not feeling well, let your supervisor know. Come into the clinic and schedule an appointment.”

With the recent spread of the NORO virus in the region, Capt. Daniel Yee, 21st MDS medical director said it’s important to practice good hygiene and know how illnesses can spread.

“Strep throat spreads through droplets by coughing or sharing food and drinks,” he said. “If you think you have the flu or strep, wear a mask and minimize interaction with people.”

The Schriever clinic does not have regular walk-in hours, however, Airmen who believe they have strep

throat can walk-in for a test and if there is an open spot for an appointment, the clinic will provide care to the Airmen.

Yee said getting a flu shot is mandatory for military personnel, but he also encouraged family and friends to get vaccinated.

“The flu can cause severe sickness and death, typically in older folks and young kids,” he said. “If you get the flu shot, it won’t necessarily prevent you from getting the flu, but it can lessen the severity of the illness.”

The 21st MDS offers a variety of free over-the-counter medication to Airmen without an appointment.

“Get your flu shot, not just for yourself, but for your family,” Yee said. “Practice proper hygiene and make sure you’re cleaning up after yourself. If someone is sick ,encourage them to be seen and not linger, that’s how you get other people sick.”
