CHRIEVER AIR FORCE, Colo. — The word “leader” never meant much to me until I joined the military. I used to think a leader was someone who held a certain position or rank. Now as much as we like to believe those go hand in hand, that is not always the case. I have gone through a fair share of good and bad leadership, but what I learned is the negative ones teach you more.

Negativity is the most contagious thing and it spreads faster than a wildfire. A culture is created when the majority accepts the norms. A good leader understands how important it is to create positive norms. Good leadership has taught me how effective you can be when you provide a positive, caring and respectful environment. Through my personal experience, I have come to understand an effective leader is someone who can lead from the front and the back. What I mean is being able to communicate and care about people no matter what level or rank. I have found the most loved and respected leaders are the ones who care. Let me say that again, a good leader is someone who genuinely cares. If you can gain someone’s respect, loyalty and love will always follow suit. Being a good leader is being able to empathize and simply understand. Most people just want to be heard and understood, if you can provide that aspect, you’ve won half the battle.

Actions will always speak louder than words so some qualities can never be fabricated. A good leader is confident even when in doubt. He or she makes everyone around them feel at ease and involved. There is no such thing as a perfect leader but if you constantly work toward leader qualities, you are on the right track.

The most important thing to understand is anyone can be a leader. Leading is the ability to help or guide anyone who needs assistance. Think about the last time you were there for a friend or family member. Believe it or not, you were

Although sometimes it is hard to see, you, todays Airmen, are the leaders of tomorrow. Even with my short time in the military, I know exactly what kind of leader I want to be because of my good and bad leadership examples. I constantly work toward becoming what I admire in a leader and never intend to stop growing and learning to be the best I can be.

STAR team to support 50th Operations Group

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Space Team for Airmen Resilience program hosted an open house and burger burn to celebrate their new facility in Building 442, Dec. 10.

The team began in October as an operational support team to the installation and is currently embedded into the 50th Operations Group.

“I think having burgers, chips and soda helped get everyone out, and with the five therapy dogs coming out,

I saw so many smiles.”

“The purpose of this event is so Airmen in the 50th OG know where we are,” said Maj. David Beutler, 21st Medical Squadron STAR operational support flight commander. “We are not in the same building as the 50th OG, so anytime our services are needed, they know how to find us. It also allows them to get more interaction with our team and see who we are and what we are.”

During the event, the team had their offices open and were on hand to interact with participants.

“I think having burgers, chips and soda helped get everyone out, and with the five therapy dogs coming out, I saw so many smiles,” said Beutler.

The STAR team program is in its pilot phase and is an initiative led by Gen. John Raymond, United States Space Command and Air Force Space Command commander, to fulfi ll the 50th Space Wing commander’s priority of connecting and taking care of Airmen.

“Schriever is unique as an installation, due to the limited services,” Beutler said. “With the nature of the mission here, we will be focusing on mental health and morale. We are trying to identify causes and things that contribute to breakdowns in the system in order to bring [them to the] attention of the command, and hopefully they can make informed decisions on how to treat those issues.”

The team, consisting of a physician assistant as the team lead, a medical technician, a chaplain, a chaplain assistant, a psychologist, a social worker and a mental health technician, is currently embedded in the 50th Operations Group and will provide easily accessible physical, spiritual, mental and social support to Airmen in the group.

The STAR team consists of a physician assistant as the team lead, a medical technician, a chaplain, a chaplain’s assistant, a psychologist, a social worker and a mental health technician. Together the team provides support to the various needs a member may have.

Beutler said the team has a musculoskeletal team and the capability to see patients at the clinic, in T-135 by the fitness center or conduct consultations in their facility for anything acute.

“We also have our chaplain team who supports anything related to resilience, spirituality, social, finances and other areas and to focus on mental health we have a clinical psychologist, and will have a social worker and mental health technician in the coming months,” he said.

The team will work with the 50th OG for the first year.

As the program continues, they will eventually shift focus to another group.

“One thing for members to keep in mind is although we are working with the 50th OG, we see military members exclusively,” said Staff Sgt. Anissa Testaverde, 21st Medical Squadron technician. “We don’t see civilian contractors or general schedule personnel.”

“In the early 1980s when Air Force Space Command first came into existence, the Air Force and Department of Defense needed to expand the military space infrastructure,” he said. “At the time, Sunnyvale Air Force Station (later Onizuka AFS) was limited in its ability to grow to handle the new satellite systems such as GPS, DSP, and others on the drawing board for communications and surveillance. Following three years of discussions, Colorado became the choice and the area east of Peterson Air Force Base had the land available to establish a new satellite operations complex called the Consolidate Space Operations Center.”

Schriever clinic welcomes new internal behavioral health consultant

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 21st Medical Squadron is gaining a new member to their team, Dr. Alicia Rozycki, who will be the full time internal behavioral health consultant starting in February 2020.

This new addition will increase patient access to behavioral health optimization program services.

The BHOP provides a time limited, focused service where patients make goals or practices aimed at helping them learn new skills to manage issues or concerns in their lives.

“Patients can get help with life stressors.”

The BHOP patients can expect to meet with the behavioral health consultant anywhere from one to four appointments per issue or concern. Appointments usually last for 20-25 minutes. “[The] BHOP is great for a lot of different reasons,” said Maj. Louis Pagano, 21st MDS director of psychological health, element chief of mental health services. “The services provided are really flexible and can help with a wide array of concerns.”

Patients can get help with life stressors, family conflict, grief, job loss, job stress and mental health symptoms among others. Help with management of chronic medical conditions are provided for issues such as pain, insomnia or diabetes. Patients can also seek support for health behaviors such as weight loss and smoking cessation; anything that has a behavioral or emotional component to it.

In addition to BHOP, specialty mental health services are also offered at the clinic. These services are available to any member of Team Schriever on active orders, including active guard and reserve.

“The difference between BHOP and specialty mental health is that specialty mental health tends to provide long-term care,” said Dr. Mark Stonger, 21st MDS clinical psychologist. “Specialty mental health focuses on a variety

At the Schriever Clinic, Airmen can seek services from both the Behavioral Health Optimization Program and specialty mental health. Typically, it is recommended Airmen start with BHOP and transfer to specialty mental health if necessary. Some of the issues Airmen can seek help for are insomnia, smoking, job stress and grief. of different issues that can be presented, but they tend to be more chronic in nature.”

If a patient is receiving care from BHOP and requires treatment from specialty mental health, the transition is simple.

“At Schriever, we’re a small clinic, so specialty mental health is right across the hall,” Pagano said. “The transition can be as simple as making a warm handoff, where one doctor can walk across the hall and say, ‘This Airman and I have been working on X, Y and Z, but we feel at this time it might be most helpful for them to have care that’s a little more intense or longer in nature.’ We really want to open the aperture to catch anyone who might be strug-

gling with a behavioral or emotional need.”

Despite having open access to these services, for some there is still a stigma associated with seeking behavioral and mental health care.

“I think [the] stigma can sometimes get in the way because Airmen want to keep tight control of what’s going on to keep moving forward and pushing ahead,” Stonger said. “And often, it’s almost like walking on a very muddy road. You just keep slogging along, but the more you keep pressing, the deeper you go into the mud. So rather than trying to control or avoid, we’re here to help.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The 22nd Space Operations Squadron provides scheduling for Department of Defense satellites, however, it’s the unit’s defensive counter-space operators who provide the first line of defense for the DoD satellites.

“We monitor signals from satellites and make sure they’re as clean as possible,” said Staff Sgt. Caleb Shackelford, 22nd SOPS DSCO operator. “We monitor frequencies for anomalies or interferences, whether that be hostile, friendly, space or ground based.”

The 22nd SOPS is responsible for scheduling the time on satellites to support commanding and telemetry downloads.

“Space is involved in almost everything now,” Vandenbosch said. “The fact we have the capability to be nearly anywhere through our satellites is amazing.”

Before working as a 22nd SOPS DSCO, Shackelford was a tactical special operations communications Airman, working primarily with Air Force tactical air control party Airmen.

“Everyone knows Special Forces is the ‘tip of the spear,’ but space is just as important,” he said. “Warfighters across the globe rely on operators here to perform their duties at an exceptional level.”

Although Shackelford wasn’t a space operator by trade, he was the first DSCO in the 22nd SOPS “The position really became a thing in 2016,” he said. “[Brig. Gen. Deanna Burt, Air Force Space Command director of operations] pushed to have the defensive counter-space role on AFSCN operations to monitor for interference.”

Since the stand-up of the position in 2016, DSCOs have been providing clean and uncorrupted data to its users.

“Information is power and that’s exactly what we provide,” Vandenbosch said.

“We enable our users to know what’s out there and what’s affecting their satellites.”

The United States space superiority isn’t a given, it’s through the work of its operators the mission is accomplished at such a high level.

“As more countries get involved, more satellites are launched, and the more congested space, there’s a higher likelihood to be more satellite interference,” Shackelford said. “By providing situational awareness to our operators, we’re able to improve our space superiority as an Air Force.”

Sgt. Michael Vandenbosch, 22nd SOPS DSCO said. “The AFSCN is the network our users operate to communicate with satellites. It’s a global network of antennas used to send and receive signals.”

Vandenbosch said DSCOs are important because users need to be able to get clean data to and from satellites.

“We monitor interference and use it to tell operators how to alter their schedules to avoid any satellite damage,” he said. “If we didn’t do our job, it’d be more difficult to categorize interferences and where they come from. The process would take much longer.”

Schriever Airmen stay fit for the holidays

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — As Airmen prepare to spend holidays with families and friends, they’ll likely face a tough decision: do they really need another plate of food?

Staying in shape during this time of the year presents a challenge as Airmen generally have a different schedule, but will also have altered eating and exercise habits.

“You’re at somebody’s house and they have cookies and different foods that are available at that time,” said Seth Cannello, 50th Force Support Squadron fitness and sports manager. “The key thing to remember is it’s a lot easier to gain weight than it is to lose weight.”

“If you ate a muffin and it was 450 calories, that’s about the equivalent of

riding a bike for an hour in order to burn that off.”

Cannello said majority of Airmen — or people in general — won’t have the restraint to limit the junk food they eat during the holidays.

Daniel Webb, 50th FSS recreation assistant, agreed with Cannello’s take and said it’s easier to affect the workout side of the coin than to change someone’s eating habits.

“Only a very dedicated few can do that,” Webb said.

“It’s easier to add 10 minutes to your workout each day to account for the extra eating or accept that you’re going to gain two pounds over the next two weeks and we’ll adjust it on Jan. 1.”

Instead of limiting intake, Cannello suggests mind tricks for people to control what they eat.

“I look at how many calories a particular food item has,” Cannello said. “Then I say to myself, ‘OK, now I’m going to have to run X amount of miles to burn all that off.’ It’s amazing how little snack items have a high caloric value.

The amount of work you have to do in order to burn that off isn’t worth it sometimes.”

run at a speed of six miles an hour. Of course, there are varying factors: male or female, height, weight, age, incline on the treadmill and more.

“Most people don’t run for an hour though,” Cannello said. “If you ate a muffin and it was 450 calories, that’s about the equivalent of riding a bike for an hour in order to burn that off. And that’s an approximate guess. But that’s fairly close.”

Webb said that he provides Airmen with a routine to follow during their time at home.

“I’ll give them what I think they should do while they’re away,” Webb said. “They can choose to follow it or not.

With the boot camp here, it’s five days a week. So they have a five-day plan and they can do those as they see fit.”

While Cannello did stress the importance of keeping in shape during the down time, he also understands some indulgence won’t make or break most Airmen’s physical prowess. But he does not recommend it.

“You need to have that ability to say ‘no’ or to stop eating as much as you want,” Cannello said. “You can eat a lot, but you just have to increase how much you’re exercising in order to burn those calories. If you’re going to eat poorly you need to make it up somehow. The way I make it up is to work out harder.”

Tuition Assistance brief

Informed decision course

CONTRACTING OFFICER

The City of Fountain is looking for an independent contractor for a term of 12 months. The contract amount will be discussed with eligible professionals. This position is only funded for the calendar year 2020, and will be issued Form 1099 as an independent contractor. Future contracts may be available but not guaranteed.

This position will provide direct support preparing, soliciting, negotiating, awarding and managing City contracts, particularly associated with the Inter-Governmental Support Agreement (IGSA) program between the City and local military installations. Researches, coordinates, develops and prepares Grant request documents.

Requires a 4-year degree, supplemented by specialized courses/training in contracting, processes, business, administration or equivalent. Requires at least 5 years of experience managing federal contracts related to military installations or activities, or closely related experience. Experience and comfort interacting with business, government and military officials.
