50th MSG wins holiday card contest

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Mission Support Group won the 50th Force Support Squadron’s holiday card contest Dec. 10 on base.

The contest served as a replacement for events canceled by 50th FSS due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Airmen submitted entries Dec. 3 and received a sixby-eight piece of plywood from the 50th FSS to create a festive card. Cards will remain displayed on Falcon Parkway, near the base fitness center, until Jan. 4, 2021.

“This is an event that was designed to keep [physical] distancing in mind while still trying to bring a little holiday cheer,” said Eric McCullough, 50th FSS community cohesion coordinator.

The 50th MSG bested eight other entrants with their card, which included a fireplace with stockings that displayed each of the MSG’s squadron logos. The right corner of the card depicted the Grinch’s hand holding a Space Force ornament.

“We wanted to give people positive feelings on the installation, so we’re happy we could hold this event.”

“We had a good time as an office brainstorming what we wanted our card to look like,” said Lt. Col. Jessica Ditson, 50th MSG deputy. “We wanted to figure out ways to incorporate all of our squadrons who may or may not have been able to participate due to work limitations. Second Lt. (Nicole) Hall was the master painter behind our work.”

Judges used a 1-10 scale to critique creativity, originality and overall looks. To remain fair, judges could not score their own unit’s card.

The event served as a method to give back to the Airmen, which Gabriel Laramie, 50th FSS deputy director, said is especially important during the holidays.

“We wanted to give people positive feelings on the installation, so we’re happy we could hold this event,” he said.

Despite El Paso County moving to Level Red: Safer at home guidelines and swift implementation of the event, Laramie, said he’s grateful numerous Airmen participated.

One of the 50th FSS’s missions is to provide morale and welfare to the installation and Laramie said he feels accomplished that with the contest.

“The team did a great job of putting together this program on short notice,” he said. “We hope folks could bond while putting together their holiday cards. It’s a different way to hold events during the holidays, but it’s a good way to help folks connect especially since everyone is so disconnected.”

The 50th MSG earned a $500 catered lunch with their win but Ditson said due to pandemic they will hold their lunch at date when it’s safe.

COTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. — I always smile when answering some of the paperwork before a medical exam. What’s my preferred method of learning? Am I a visual learner? Do I prefer audible directions or maybe a demonstration?

I’m not sure why those questions are there or what database they go into, but I’m pretty sure I always choose something different each time. If nothing else, those questions remind me to look inward and there’s always value in self-reflection.

Similar to preferred method of learning, I’d like to ask a question for you to consider as you move through life regardless of rank, age or position: What’s your preferred method of communicating?

Have you ever thought about how you engage in meaningful dialogue with others and whether or not it’s effective? With social distancing, staggered office schedules, shift work, and the unfortunate necessity to limit face-to-face contact due to the pandemic, it’s important now more than ever to take a moment and ensure we’re communicating effectively throughout our organizations.

"Some folks get to go home, but others remain on base and can’t visit family,” he said. “Their options are limited, especially now, and having these opportunities to see other people, participate in activities, build morale and get some adrenaline going is critical.”

— The 50th Force Support Squadron’s Outdoor Recreation team continues to find safe activities for Airmen through its Rec On program.

Rec On is part of the Rest for Resiliency initiative, which provides opportunities to Airmen prepping for or returning from deployment and seeks to reintegrate Airmen into society, family life and local communities. The program also serves active duty Airmen who have not deployed.

“The outdoors are definitely the preferred method to get people active and keep them six feet away from each other,” said Thomas Appleman, 50th FSS Outdoor Recreation assistant director. “We want to keep morale up and these activities are a good way to do that.”

During winter months, available activities include skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and more. Rec On provides cheaper options for participants to enjoy more activities.

“Through Rec On, [snowmobiling is] only $35, so there’s significant [savings] for those who use Rec On,” Appleman said.

“We [provide] trips for prices they probably won’t find anywhere else.”

During the trips, Airmen still abide by COVID-19 guidelines to ensure the safety of each attendee.

“We do allow more [people] to come on the trips, but they would have to drive themselves," Appleman said. "We have a 10-person capacity since that's the current group limit for the state of Colorado."

Everyone who participates must wear a mask and adhere to physical distancing rules. In some cases, such as snowmobiling, once Airmen venture out on their vehicle, masks are not required due to the distance between attendees.

Prather said she enjoyed how the program showed her different Colorado trails and helped her build bonds.

“I made friends specifically from going on these trips,” Prather said. “I wouldn’t have met these folks any other way and we’re still connected. [Rec On] is a great way to make friends and meet different people.”

Rec On hosts events most Saturdays, with the exception being holiday weekends, as well as April and May when ODR members train for whitewater rafting season.

GPS III SV04 receives operational acceptance Staff Report Space and Missile Systems Center

LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.

— Global Positioning System III Space Vehicle 04 received United States Space Force’s Operational Acceptance approval on Dec. 1- marking yet another significant milestone for the GPS III program, Space and Missile Systems Center and USSF. It is the fourth GPS III satellite delivered into the operational constellation in the past 12 months and the second in the past three months. Additionally, this is the first GPS III vehicle delivered to the warfighter through an expedited satellite control authority transfer process, which cuts ten days off the previous operational acceptance timeline.

“With the onset of SV04, the GPS constellation continues moving forward in next generation modernization. The 2nd Space Operations Squadron is one step closer to providing Military Code capability for the entire 24 satellite baseline. The highly encrypted M-Code to protect GPS signals from jamming and spoofing is currently enabled on 22 GPS satellites of various generations; 24 are needed to bring the M-Code to the next level of operational capability,” said Capt. Collin Dart, 2 SOPS DOA Flight commander. “SV04 brings the constellation to 23 M-Code capable vehicles. SV05 will launch no earlier than July 2021. This will add the 24th M-Code capable vehicle. SV04 also sets a new standard for handover from the contractor launch team to operational

opportunity to serve in two leadership positions. While this is not the first time I have been entrusted with important roles, my positions are the first ones where I felt the responsibility of conveying a particular message to a larger audience.

It was then I began to take a step back and make honest assessments on whether or not I was effectively communicating. I was not. Whether it was a particular safety issue, cautions about the legalization of marijuana, or the myriad of other topics that people discuss, there were times traditional methods were not having the desired effect.

Personal interactions are awesome; however, commander’s calls and face-to-face encounters are problematic for units with shift workers and even more so with the challenges of a pandemic. Social media has proved a useful way to remain connected but it’s so diverse and reliant upon individuals buying into a particular platform that you’re likely to miss a large portion.

Emails are a tremendous tool to get a detailed message to a large audience, but they rely on a person reading the text. Policy letters, often full of important intent and useful information, face the same challenge.

GPS III SV04 joins this operational constellation of 31 GPS satellites orbiting in medium-Earth orbit.

I wanted to seek out another way to make it easy for people to digest a message. Enter the meme.

A meme is an idea, behavior or style that becomes a fad and is spread by means of imitation from person to person within a culture. It is often the carrier of symbolic meaning, representing a particular phenomenon.

By no means am I saying memes are a panacea to communication challenges; but it’s simplistic and forces you to focus on the importance of your message. If you can cut through some of the extraneous content, you stand a better chance to have your message received.

Distill it down to minimal words, toss it onto a fun picture, and distribute via email, social media, posters in the unit, etc. Will the idea work for you or your particular audience? That’s a question we all get to ask ourselves. Personally, I’ve received more feedback from memes about flight safety, resilience, and performance recognition than any commander’s call, email, or policy memo I’ve ever written.

Hopefully you see the point of this commentary isn’t the value of memes as much as the importance of effective communication. Good leaders, regardless of position, are constantly evaluating themselves on how they’re engaging with others and are not afraid to try new things. Sometimes the message or delivery falls flat, but it’s okay to not be perfect.

This system delivers improved accuracy, advanced anti-jam capabilities and increased resiliency for the GPS III constellation.

We now have a total of 23 M-Code spacecraft for our Warfighters. For our billions of civil users, it brings the count up to 23 L2C spacecraft and 16 L5 spacecraft,” said Col. Ryan Colburn, director of the SMC Portfolio Architect Office’s Spectrum Warfare Division. “For professional users with existing dual-frequency operations, L2C enables faster signal acquisition, enhanced reliability, and greater operating range.

L5 is broadcast in a radio band reserved exclusively for aviation safety services. It features higher power, greater bandwidth, and an advanced signal design. Future aircraft will use L5 in combination with L1 C/A to improve accuracy (via ionospheric correction) and robustness (via signal redundancy). The operational acceptance of this spacecraft is another display of the fantastic teamwork across SMC’s Corps, Space Delta 8, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, our industry partners and many others who work together to make these missions possible.”

GPS satellites provide position, navigation, and timing to more than four billion military and civilian users worldwide.

What’s important is to recognize that there’s a difference between what you want to say and how it’s received, then take steps to resolve the issue. I’m not the world’s best communicator and I still make my fair share of unimpressive memes.

However, by utilizing a variety of communication methods, both traditional and unconventional, I stand a greater chance to reach even the most remote indi-

Topics like resiliency, innovation, and mission readiness are all important and deserve attention; so, do your best to ensure you’re being heard. When you do get the message out and the entire organization operates with the same perspective, that’s when you feel connected and truly part of a winning organization.

And yes, the irony of using an article to talk about its ineffectiveness is not lost on me.

Healthy eating habits lead to healthier you

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Air Force recently removed the waist measurement from the physical fitness test, but Airmen must stay physically fit year-round to perform their mission.

While most members think fitness requires just going to the gym, fitness is heavily based on a balanced diet.

“Eating healthy does not have to be hard but does require a commitment,” said Carol Carr, 21st Medical Squadron health promotion coordinator. “Simple things like grocery shopping and meal planning can set one up to make better food choices and reach their health-related goals.”

Carr stressed the importance of consuming vegetables, as they are among the least consumed food groups in America. However, she said there is no need to focus on potatoes, corn and peas as they tend to be higher in starch.

“We all eat poorly at times, but the length of time is really what matters,” Carr said. “One day of eating poorly will not drastically impact your goals.

However, eating poorly for even a week can negatively affect your goals.

This is especially important if you are trying to lose weight or reduce disease risk.”

The Health Promotion Office offers numerous resources Airmen can use to help monitor their health such as body fat assessments and classes on topics such as healthy eating. Airmen can also schedule an appointment with a registered dietician, if desired.

However, due to COVID-19 restric-

tions, appointments are a combination of virtual and in-person.

Carr added, in the U.S., people tend to consume food high in protein and saturated fat, such as red meat. Carr recommended cutting down consumption of these foods. Additionally, Carr said it’s important to limit intake of sugary and high-sodium foods and beverages “There’s nothing wrong with an occasional snack or meal that might be considered excessive,” said Seth Cannello, 50th Force Support Squadron sports and fitness manager. “However, I don’t like the terms “cheat day” or “weekly cheat days,” because that implies it’s okay to have an entire day of overabundance. Eating too much or eating high-caloric snacks should be rare and not the norm.”

Some of the side effects of a poor diet include weight gain, tooth decay, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, strokes and diabetes.

“Eating well and exercising are two very important activities that all Airmen should practice,” Cannello said addressing ways to stay fit.

“These activities were important before the pandemic, but they are even more important now [during COVID restrictions].”

Currently, the fitness center is open Monday-Friday 5 a.m.-7:30 p.m. and 7 a.m-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

However, there are patron limits in each room and machines are separated to allow for physical distancing.

Additionally, patrons are asked to wear masks while not exercising and wipe down any surface they touch.

Space Delta 6 protects space and cyberspace

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Space Delta 6 provides space and cyberspace access to the U.S. Space Force.

The unit, coined “Cyber Delta,” was established July 24 and is comprised of five squadrons across the United States that carry out the mission of the new operations-focused structure.

The USSF has a ‘flattened’ organizational structure, meaning it has reduced layers of command, and has removed the requirement for Groups and Numbered Air Force levels, according to 2nd Lt. Nathanial Akers, Cyber Defense Correlation Cell for Space senior watch officer.

“This change allows communication and decision-making information to flow between the Field Commands (considered Major Command equivalents) and the Deltas,” Akers said.

Space Delta 6 provides critical mission assuredness to each of the eight deltas within the U.S. Space Force, conducting no-fail operations every day. “[Space] Delta 6 is the premier leader of space access and cyber defense for the USSF,” said Akers.

Global Positioning Systems, and also allow digital devices to connect to one another. “[Space] Delta 6 provides assured access to space through the $6.8 billion SCN, allowing USSF operators the ability to communicate with satellites in order to keep their telemetry and maintain orbit,” Akers said.

“Additionally, [Space] Delta 6 is responsible for providing organic Defensive Cyberspace Operations for the USSF by building Mission Defense Teams and Cybersecurity Service Provider capabilities.”

Within Akers’ unit, the 61st Cyberspace Squadron also works cybersecurity.

“The 61st CYS provides the second part of the [Space] Delta 6 main mission; which is to protect the integrity and security of all space-based mission systems and assets,” Akers said. “We provide valuable information regarding how to further protect and add additional layers of defense against those who would seek to harm to spacebased systems.”

Same Delta, different scope, the 22nd Space Operations Squadron handles the SCN, which are essential to the ground antennas located around the world and allows users to contact their satellites. It is a method of command and control to contact the satellite to perform any critical commanding, explains Capt. Steven Ramos, 22nd SOPS operations flight commander. “[Space] Delta 6 is leading the way to integrate space and cyberspace,” Akers said.

“There are two primary forms of power in this world... information and currency, both of which are digital within cyberspace. [We are] the tip of the spear in providing integrated security to protect our digital assets.

He added that the unit’s goal is to become the USSF’s essential focal point for all things cyber on space weapons and mission systems.

“It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get in on the ground floor of something great. The USSF and [Space] Delta 6 are those opportunities,” he said.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Since 1958, the Department of Defense has provided human space flight support to NASA. This legacy of partnership and support continues today, and has grown to include a wide joint and international military presence.

At Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., the Combined Force Space Component Command and its subunit the Combined Space Operations Center provide a variety of support to NASA missions, while also exemplifying how partnering with other military services and allies can benefit all.

“This is an exciting and historic time to be in the space operations business,” said Maj. Gen. DeAnna Burt, CFSCC commander. “Just last month we assisted NASA in its second successful human space flight mission to take place from U.S. soil in 11 years, and on the 20th of this month we will mark the first anniversary of the creation of the U.S. Space Force.”

The main areas the California-based CFSCC and CSpOC crews assist with during NASA human space flight missions include: recovery trajectory tracking, rapidly deployable global personnel recovery capabilities, space surveillance sensor coverage, and collision-avoidance screening.

“Our team at the CSpOC is intensely monitoring the data feeds tracking human space flight missions during the launch and recovery phases,” said Maj. Kyle Wamser, CFSCC’s chief of human space flight support. “Once the CFSCC commander makes the call, our rescue teams stationed around the world are ready and will deploy that moment to come to the aid of the astronauts.”

Rescue Support, is actually comprised of several smaller active-duty and Air National Guard teams based in different locations such as Florida, Hawaii, South Carolina and Texas. Together, the aircrew and pararescue professionals remain on alert during any NASA human space flight launch or landing, prepared to fly out in HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters, as well as HC-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, to rescue the astronauts.

“There’s a lot of coordination that must go into a rescue mission so, once initiat-

ed, we at the CFSCC work hand-in-hand with the Support Operations Center at Patrick Air Force base, Fla., to provide Gen. Burt with the highest level of situational awareness to effectively command assigned forces,” said Wamser, who is an HH-60 Pave Hawk pilot and Air Force reservist. “These assets are further tied into the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and Joint Personnel Recovery Centers at U.S. combatant commands worldwide.”

In addition to the recovery trajectory tracking and rescue mission support,

the CFSCC and CSpOC also provide space surveillance sensor coverage and collision-avoidance screening to NASA missions.

“The multinational team located at the CSpOC work hand-in-hand with civil, commercial and allied partners to provide the most comprehensive understanding of the space environment as possible,” said Royal Canadian Air Force Officer Maj. Michael Lang, the CSpOC lead for the Nov. 16 SpaceX Dragon Crew-1 ‘Resilience’ Capsule mission, where a crew of three Americans and one Japanese astronaut launched to the International Space Station. “Together, we provided Space Domain Awareness to Dragon Resilience and the ISS to avoid potential collisions with other space objects and communicated that data between NASA Johnson Space Center and other mission partners.”

“We also tracked Dragon Resilience’s trajectories as it maneuvered to the ISS, actively disseminated this information to partner sites, and communicated with the 18th Space Control Squadron, also based at Vandenberg AFB, for tracking real-time milestones such as maneuver times, docking, and status of the capsule,” added Lang.

About 20 personnel from the 18th Space Control Squadron supported the Dragon Resilience launch through Space Domain Awareness mission planning and execution from two sites, Vandenberg AFB and Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, VA. First Lt. Morgan McCune, 18th SPCS crew commander, was also the mission planning cell chief for the Dragon Resilience mission. In that role, he created and briefed the Space Domain Awareness mission plan for the event and led operations for launch and on-orbit custody to docking, using the experience continued page 11 | SUPPORT

he had already gained from supporting five previous human space flight missions.

“This was my first time leading a mission planning cell and concurrently directing live operations, and the experience was incredible,” said McCune.

“I am living part of my lifelong dream through my involvement in the space domain.”

One thing is certain during any human space flight mission; it takes a strong and collaborative team to ensure mission success.

“Everyone at the 18th Space Control Squadron plays a part that contributes to the overall success of various NASA missions,” said First Lt. Rafael Fermin, 18 SPCS standardization and evaluation flight commander. “For instance, our orbital analysts are responsible for tasking sensors to ensure we have the highest-fidelity of information to pass

on to NASA. In 2020 alone we gave warnings to the ISS crew about two separate potential conjunctions, and they maneuvered to avoid the space debris.”

Fermin added that, as orbital safety analysts for human space flight, he and the team provide on-orbit screening and conjunction analysis for every object that docks into the ISS, and throughout each object’s mission. The small team of about 10 orbital safety analysts for human space flight are in daily communication with the NASA Johnson Space Center.

“This is arguably the coolest profession that I have been blessed to be a part of, as it literally supports our astronauts and keeps them safe,” said Fermin.

Finally, the opportunity for CFSCC and CSpOC to support this year’s NASA human space flight missions also led to additional opportunities for allied nations to further develop their space programs.

“This was a tremendous opportunity for France to develop our interoperability with our allies as directed by our Defense Space Strategy,” said French Air and Space Force Col. Olivier Fleury, who is the French liaison officer for space at U.S. Space Command’s Multinational Space Coordination Division. “This is also a touchstone for the space operations France is currently setting up, and we are looking forward to reiterating our space surveillance support and advancing this collaboration no later than Spring 2021, when French astronaut Thomas Pesquet is slated to be part of the CREW-2 mission.”

Dependent ID shortage at MPF

The Military Personnel Flight is experiencing a shortage of dependent IDs. The Air Force will be shifting to Next Gen IDs for dependents and no longer ship additional orders of the previous ID card stock. To make the current stock last, the MPF will be prioritizing issuance of dependent IDs, only new dependents who have experience a change in status will be issue a card at this time. An exception for expired dependent IDs has been extended to June 30, 2021, with memo in hand that is provided by MPF. PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 2020 Housing Tenant Satisfaction Survey will be conducted over the next six weeks by CEL and Associates.

Housing is a cornerstone quality of life program for Airmen and their families. The CEL survey results provide critical feedback to inform decisions the Air Force and project owners are making now to improve the resident experience, as well as posturing to support future generations of families.

The annual DoD Tenant Satisfaction Survey will begin Dec. 8, 2020 and will be open for 45 days, ending Jan. 22, 2021. The survey can only be completed online. Each on-base resident household is invited to complete the survey with the exception of project owner employees residing in privatized housing (unless the employee is the spouse of a tenant).

One survey link will be sent to the email address of record for each household. The message from AirForceHousingSurvey@celassociates.com is good for completion of one survey per household.

Tenants should not forward the email to parties outside of their household. Tenants who have not completed the survey will receive three email reminders during the 45-day survey period encouraging participation. If no member of a resident’s household receives the email link by Dec. 18, they can contact AirForceHousingSurvey@celassociates. com for assistance. Online training helps service members tackle academics A new online training program is making it easier to tackle school for service members staying on active duty or transitioning out of the military.

“The GRIT training is going to help them understand that they’re not in it alone, and there are a lot of resources and people on campus and in the community here to help them with this new challenge,” said Jerome Young, military and veteran outreach coordinator at UCCS. “In the military, you’re surrounded with ways of being resilient and how to overcome obstacles, but it’s a good [reinforcement of] that type of training to help people basically understand themselves.”

GRIT (Greater Resilience Information Toolkit) was created at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and promoted to El Paso County residents in partnership with El Paso County Public Health, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Colorado Springs and AspenPointe. Its goal is, “to help you tap into your own personal strength and resilience — equipping you with the tools to overcome whatever challenges today (or tomorrow) throws your way,” the website reads.

The free, self-paced, 5-hour online training can be watched anywhere with internet access and on any device.

Young, a retired U.S. Army captain, believes the GRIT training can especially help those preparing to leave the service.

“It is pretty stressful when somebody like me who retired after 20 years [leaves the military,] and now your identity’s changed to take on something new and different,” he said. “The training can really help you with dealing with that stress.”

Additionally, Young said it can also help military spouses who are considering going to school.

“We talk a lot about the military member transitioning, but a spouse, they transition as well,” he said. “They also have to constantly change jobs because of moving to another location so it’s pretty stressful, but if they go through the GRIT training they can understand that the resources are there.

“It gives them the tools to help understand that it is a challenge but there are ways to navigate through that challenge.”

From the GRIT website, here’s what someone can expect to take away from the training: • Gain a basic understanding of resilience, common stress responses in disasters, and stress-related problems • Develop tools to help build strength and resilience among your friends and family — and throughout your community • Learn how to support and listen to someone who is struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic or another hardship • Strengthen your coping skills, self-efficacy, and resilience while helping others around you do the same • Know the signs for when a formal mental health counselor might be needed, and how and where to refer your friends and loved ones • Gain access to valuable community resources and learn how to guide individuals to more resources when needed For Young, the GRIT training was similar to lessons he learned on how to be a leader in the military.

“When you’re a leader in the military, you go through a lot,” he said.

“I deployed four times, and you go through a lot during that time. We lost soldiers; I lost soldiers.

“This training was compatible with what the military taught us as leaders, to be able to help others be resilient and overcome some of the stressors. I think it’s really great to be seeing it offered on the civilian side.”

Meanwhile, Young said like most people right now, those in the military community are also dealing with extra stressors brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“For instance, student veterans, they’re being challenged to take on a different platform of learning when they’re used to face to face, so they’re more stressed,” he said. “COVID is adding a lot of stress towards really anyone in academics, anyone going through certain transitions, things like that.

“But the GRIT training, it brings a bunch of people of different backgrounds together to help people get through all of it and know there are resources out there to help them.”
