CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Most of my childhood, I was covered in a healthy layer of dirt and grease. The son of a contractor, I was pretty much always on a job site, working and learning from the greatest leader I ever had — my dad. He died 26 years ago, but based on a bedrock of integrity and legendary work ethic he taught me countless lessons that I use to this day.

I learned one such lesson, when I (as little Jack Fischer) was on my hands and knees with a putty knife after my dad asked me to tear up some tile.

You’re probably thinking it’s pretty dumb to take up tile with a putty knife — and you’d be right.

I was young though, without much experience, and didn’t know how to use many tools.

My dad came around the corner and chuckled, “What are you doing?” Knowing there was no good answer to the question, I sat back on my knees with a pronounced shoulder shrug as if to respond, “I don’t know.” He walked into the other room and returned with a tile scraper, put the blade on the ground in front of me, and with a single push took up an entire row of tiles.

“You need to use the right tool Jack,” he said. “Whether you are tearing up tile, or working with people, there’s a ‘right’ tool for each situation.”

As an astute first grader, I picked up quickly. I started to analyze the task at hand, look around at what was available, and tried to find the right tool to get the job done. As

I got older and watched Dad work with people, I learned his advice worked with people too.

There are foundational things like integrity, commitment, vision and more, which are important regardless of the situation. The more leadership experience you have, however, the more you see how complex it is to motivate teams beyond those foundational truisms. Where management becomes leadership is in the art of finding when to use the right tool, in the right situation, for the right person or team. To boil it down, you need to build up your leadership toolbox, and you need to use the right tool from that toolbox for a given situation.

We should train our Airmen to be better — to be eagles.

Schriever Chapel to host holiday events

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing Chaplain office has organized multiple holiday events for the Schriever community during December.

A tree lighting ceremony took place outside of the 50th SW Headquarters Building Dec. 5. Members of the Schriever community attended and watched as the tree was lit, met Santa Claus, and enjoyed cookies and hot chocolate inside the atrium.

“We really want to bring the Schriever community together,” said Capt. Ronald Lawrence, 50th SW chaplain.

“For a lot of people, the tree reminds them of a specific time of the year, a joyous time.”

Lawrence said it’s important for everyone in the Schriever community to feel connected during this time of year, regardless of beliefs.

“Not everyone celebrates Christmas the same way or for the same reasons, so we hope the tree will be a symbol of unity, joy, community and togetherness,” he said.

A Light Up a Life service is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Wednesday at the base event center. It’s a holiday service of remembrance all are welcome to attend.

“The holidays are usually filled with memories,” said Capt. Lauren Hughes, 50th SW chaplain. “When we lose people we love and whom we’ve created great memories with, the holidays can be a reminder that those loved ones are no longer there. If you’re in a space with someone who has experienced similar loss and situations with you, you know you’re not alone.”

Lawrence said their hope for the event is not only to celebrate and remember the lives of loved ones, but to provide support, comfort and peace to Team Schriever.

“You’re not having to try to figure out how to heal by yourself,” Hughes said. “You’re doing it among families who’ve [been through] similar experiences.”

During the service, names of those who’ve passed will be read aloud and written on ornaments that will be hung on a tree in their honor. Then, the light from one candle will be passed on to every candle in the room, and eventually what was once a dark space will be illuminated. continued page 5 | CONNECTED

The next event will be a gift-wrapping party from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Dec. 16 and 17 in the 50th SW Headquarters Building atrium. All of Team Schriever are invited to participate.

“If you don’t have the means to purchase a gift for a child in need, you can still give back by wrapping something for them,” Hughes said.

In addition, people can build connections and meet other volunteers.

All Team Schriever members are welcome and encouraged to attend the upcoming chaplain’s events.

“I’ve heard testimonies from Airmen that the gift wrapping party we did last year connected them to others, and that’s what it’s all about,” Hughes said. “This type of event is for Christmas gifts, but it’s also Airmen giving back. It’s something that will put a smile on a young person’s face.”

A Fellowship Dinner is scheduled to be held at the Tierra Vista Community Center here from 4 - 6 p.m., Dec. 18. All of Team Schriever are welcome to attend, enjoy a homemade meal and connect with others.

“It’s open to everyone, but there will be a focus of a Christian tradition,” Hughes said.

The dinner will start with a time of prayer in which requests will be taken. Then, attendees will eat and can participate in a Bible study.

“Having a connection to something that is outside of yourself, having a connection to something that is eternal may help with dark times that we all experience,” Hughes said. “So if anything, the hope for us is that the Chapel team and these events spark hope inside of you.”

A Christmas Eve Candlelight service is scheduled for 7 p.m., Dec. 24 at the event center.

“The service is to remember what Christmas is about from a Christian perspective and tradition, and celebrate the birth of Christ,” said Hughes. “People are going to experience fellowship. Chaplain Lawrence will give a message of hope, and we’ll sing songs.”

While most of these holiday events are based on Christian traditions, Hughes wants Airmen to see there is value in participating despite particular beliefs.

“With events like these, I’d like people [to] know what the Chapel team offers,” said Hughes. “We have things that are spiritual in nature, but I hope [Airmen] will be able to decipher which programs are beneficial to them [specifically]. They’ll see the variety from something as

Additionally, being better connected through these events can provide ways Airmen can ensure their teammates aren’t forgotten.

“The holidays are a joyous time for a lot of people, but I want to remind those who are having a good time to remember that not everyone might be in that same space,” Hughes said. “Don’t forget to check on your Wingman.”

Savvy spending, travel for the holidays

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The holidays can be a tough time of the year for Airmen; don’t add the burden of finances to that struggle.

As Airmen prepare to travel, stuff stockings and vehicles with gifts, it’s important they do so with caution of their funds.

John Willcockson, 50th Force Support Squadron personal financial counselor at the Airman and Family Readiness Center at Schriever and the Air Force Academy, makes sure to remind Airmen they are the gift.

“Your family will care more that you arrive safely,” Willcockson said. “If you don’t have a lot of money to spend for the holidays, that’s OK.” Brian Smith, retired Chief Master Sgt. and military relations liaison at Ent Credit Union, said he made many mistakes while traveling for the holidays and witnessed Airmen do the same. Now, he helps to prevent those.

Smith echoed the sentiments of Willcockson regarding safety while traveling and suggested planning in advance to help save money.

“Budget and follow it as best as you can,” Smith said. “Obviously, there are situations where you have to go beyond the budget, but this is where planning is key. Have an account with a few thousand dollars in it for unwelcomed events that arise. Unfortunately, these types of events will occur.”

Smith also suggested Airmen understand their vehicle’s condition prior to a road trip. While Airmen hope driving is a cheaper way to travel, it could become costly.

“I recommend Airmen ensure their car is in good shape i.e. check tires, oil and even washer fluid and ensure their insurance is up to date,” Smith said.

“God forbid, one gets into a car accident and their auto insurance has elapsed. My recommendation is to plan your leave far enough in advance to where you can purchase your tickets while the tickets are

Willcockson also has plans for those who arrive to their destination still want to purchase gifts.

Airmen must be methodical with their purchases and understand it’s not about how much they spend.

“People feel like they want to give family and friends a token of their appreciation or love,” Willcockson said.

“That, unfortunately, gets translated into the amount of dollars they spent.

You might give yourself a list of a few people who you’d like to buy something for and then for a lot of other folks, you might give them something

from your time or something you’ve spend time making. If we tell folks why we care about them, those are lasting memories.”

Willcockson understands some Airmen have larger families and may want to purchase gifts for several people.

He said to keep an eye on the tab and not go overboard to put a smile on faces over the holidays.

“It can be useful to figure out what’s memorable to the person receiving the present,” Willcockson said. “Because you get those Apple Watches for $400, and that’s right outside the budget limit for most of us. If you have six kids, it may be fair to decide to get one large present in the range of $20-40 and one small present for each child in the range of $10. Schriever Airman impacts warfighters, sends first command

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Airman 1st Class William Beattie wakes up in the morning, brushes his teeth, shaves, showers, listens to country music and puts on his uniform before he drives to work at the 4th Space Operations Squadron as an Advanced Extremely High Frequency satellite mission control sub-systems operator.

“Our mission is executed by 18 and 19 year olds every day, it really speaks to how the Air Force develops and trains its professionals.”

Beattie, having served in the Air Force for only two years, sent the first command to the new AEHF-5 satellite, Nov. 23, increasing capabilities for users around the world.

“I had no idea I would be sending the command,” he said. “It feels really good knowing that as an Airman first class, I was able to do something that’s way bigger than me, it was humbling.”

The AEHF-5 satellite is part of a constellation of the most advanced protected communication satellites in the United States military. If there were a nuclear conflict, this is the satellite that would provide com-

First Lt. Connor Monahan, 4th SOPS operations flight commander, oversees Airmen as they operate the satellites that provide the United States armed forces and its allies with secured communications.

“AEHF is our premier satellite for protected communications,” he said. “Lives depend on the operations of it.”

Beattie was trained by the 50th Operations Support Squadron for four months before joining his unit. He was then sent to the 4th SOPS where he continued training and began to execute the unit’s mission.

“People don’t realize the things they

depend on are operated by young men and women on a day to day basis,” he said. “Our mission is executed by 18 and 19 year olds every day, it really speaks to how the Air Force develops and trains its professionals.”

Beattie, however, isn’t 18. He’s 24 and earned a degree in bio-engineering from the University of Maryland.

He will commission through the Air Force officer training school at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, Feb. 11, 2020.

Upon graduation, Beattie will become a space officer.

“I’m grateful to have had this experience,” he said.

“It’s really cool coming into work and seeing so many Airmen operating such an important mission at such a young age. I hope to be able to use this experience of sending the first command to a new satellite as a

teaching point for new Airmen who think they don’t make an impact.”

Regardless of the day or shift, Beattie comes into work every day with a positive attitude and a good work ethic.

“He’s a standout worker,” Monahan said. “Beattie’s always up-beat, always professional and looking to learn more. He’s exactly the kind of Airman we need.”

Monahan said the Airmen who operate the satellites are silent professionals who often go unnoticed unless something goes wrong. Needless to say, this isn’t often.

“Regardless of rank or job, whether you’re an E-1 to O-10, you can make an impact,” Beattie said. “I never thought I’d be the one to send the command, but if you have the work ethic and the right attitude, you can achieve more than you think.”

First female Thunderbird pilot to share resurgence message By 2nd Lt. Idalí Beltré Acevedo 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Retired Col. Nicole “FiFi” Malachowski, the first female Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Team pilot, is scheduled to share her story at Schriever Air Force Base, Dec. 19.

Col. Jack Fischer, 50th Space Wing vice commander, invited Malachowski to Schriever to share her story of overcoming obstacles to emerge stronger.

“We were classmates from the U.S. Air Force Academy,” he said. “I actually joined the bowling club to hang out with her because she’s awesome. We flew F-15E Strike Eagles together and crossed paths while she was a Thunderbird [pilot] and I was [flying] F-22’s because sometimes we were at the same air shows.”

Fischer said he admires Malachowski’s perseverance and grit through adversity and how she is a constant source of inspiration.

“No matter [what she faces], what difficulties she is challenged with, she overcomes it,” Fischer said. “Life is not [always] going to go the way we plan, and the true measure of you as a person is really how you react to that, how do you put your heart back into it so you can succeed and she is just a great example of doing that time and again.”

Malachowski recalled her first Air Force air show experience and its impact on her life.

“I remember the very day that I decided I wanted to become a fighter pilot,” she said.

“I was five years old, and my family had gone to an air show where I saw a fighter jet. I remember watching this jet scream by. It was a feast for the senses, it shook my chest.

I had to cover my ears because it was so loud.

I remember smelling the jet fuel and thinking, ‘wow, that’s what I want to do some day, I want to become a fighter pilot.’”

She joined organizations like the Civil Air Patrol and the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, who instilled discipline in her and helped her network with individuals with similar goals and aspirations.

“As a kid, I luckily stayed focused on that goal, and I knew that in order to become a fighter pilot I had to go to college and become a commissioned officer,” she said. “So that narrowed it down to Air Force Reserve

Officer Training Corps scholarships or the Air Force Academy. I was lucky enough to be selected to go to USAFA.” Malachowski served as a mission ready fighter pilot in three operational F-15E squadrons and accumulated more than 2,300 flight hours, including 188 hours in combat.

At the prime of her promising career in 2012, her life took an unexpected turn when she started suffering the effects of a devastating tick-borne illness that would worsen during the next four years to include disorientation, confusion, anxiety and temporary paralysis.

Malachowski shares her personal testimony and experience with her life threatening disease in an effort to create awareness of the need for prevention, more reliable diagnosis and treatment.

“I thought I was tough as a combat proven fighter pilot, but tick-borne illness destroyed me, brought me to my knees and ruthlessly broke me,” Malachowski said.

“It would be 1,525 days between my first doctor’s visit and my accurate diagnosis.

Often I was told I was just suffering from stress.”

Malachowski’s health crucible was certainly a turning point in her life that regretfully robbed her of her career as an Air Force pilot but at the same time, taught her how strong she was and how much she could endure as a human being.

For Malachowski, experiencing her illness gave her a new perspective and purpose in life.

“I am so grateful for the clarity my illness gave me,” she said. “As I sit here, two years post medical retirement, I look back and I believe being a fighter pilot and an officer in the Air Force gave me the characteristics and skills needed in order to endure my illness. I was never meant to just be a fighter pilot or just be an officer in the Air Force, my purpose was bigger than that.”

Malachowski credits her military service

for her successful battle back.

“Now I mentor Airmen who have endured or are enduring similar circumstances to me.

I help people walk that path,” she said. “I still see myself as an Airman and a wingman and I always will. If hadn’t been an Airman and a fighter pilot, I [probably] wouldn’t have endured the medical trauma and the loss of my career and my identity as well as I have.”

With humility and honesty, Malachowski admitted suffering through her illness and recovery. In the middle of her pain and struggle with her disease, Malachowski made the decision to focus on the good, what she could do, instead of what she couldn’t.

“I have stories to share and I can still lead people but in a different way,” Malachowski said. “I have a need in my heart to be with people and that’s what drew me toward what I do now, a career in motivational speaking.

I am very happy where I am at.”

This mentality and positiveness helped her overcome negative thoughts and come out stronger, with a clearer view of her future, leaving her painful past behind.

“The runway behind you is always unusable, all you ever have is the runway in front of you and that’s what was going through my mind as I was going through that difficult transition,” she said.

Malachowski took time to encourage Airmen to lookout and be kind to each other.

“All that it takes is one simple email, one quick word or pat on the back and you might be that one catalyst that helps somebody through a hardship or over that last hurdle,” she said. “It’s not that hard to just nudge each other along, it doesn’t have to be big things; just a smile to a person in an elevator who is looking down, you don’t know what is going on in their lives, just be kind.”

Malachowski’s visit will include a lunch at 11:30 a.m. in the DISH dining facility Dec. 19 (seating is limited, please be there early), and a tour of wing operations units followed by a keynote address at 2:30 p.m. in the Bldg. 300 Auditorium. This presentation will be streamed live to the base through the Schriever AFB Facebook page.

Malachowski will conclude her visit with “Mentor Time” at 3:30 p.m. at Bennie’s.

As an eagle you need to be a student of the arts.

Read, listen and absorb any materials you can to learn from history, while looking up and down your current chain to see examples of both good and bad leadership around you.

As my dad once said, “You can learn how to act from everyone — remember the good and model it yourself; remember the bad and don’t.”

While building your toolbox — watching and learning every step of the way — how do you know when to use the right tool? First, invest in your people and get to know them — know what’s important in their lives, learn about their families, ask about professional and personal goals, pay attention to what lights their fires and sparks their

souls — know them. Cracking a joke with one person may lighten their mood and recharge their batteries, but another person may find the engagement irritating.

Taking deliberate time to get to know and care for your team is key to finding how to elevate their potential and accomplish impossible things.

Second, you need to try. Don’t expect you will get it right every time (you won’t). To become a good leader you have to practice leading — look for opportunities to volunteer, lead groups and projects, and hone your craft with experience. Remember, you don’t have to be in charge of a group to lead.

When you have the knowledge and understanding of different leadership concepts, tools — and they are reinforced with your own personal experience — you’ll

find you are better prepared to consider a situation, look through your toolbox, and choose the right tool (or tools) to energize a team and crush any task.

I offer this analogy because we find ourselves before a precipice, facing a future filled with uncertainty. A future that depends on the space, cyber and support ninjas of the 50th Space Wing to defend and advance the space domain.

Doing what we have always done isn’t enough. We must learn, grow and use our tools in new ways to inspire greatness among those we are privileged to work with and lead. We must also help develop new leaders not only to replace us, but to expand and advance what we’ve done. We should train our Airmen to be better — to be eagles.

If, or rather when, our great nation calls upon us to defend freedom, let’s be ready for the fight with a convocation of eagles. We can leave the putty knives in the toolbox that day.
