50th CES continues community work amid COVID

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron hasn’t let the coronavirus pandemic curb their community work.

Each quarter, for the unit’s community involvement initiative, the 50th CES reaches out to local businesses or nonprofits to help clean their facilities, build fences or other requests.

“Times are difficult for everyone, so if we can do anything to help

out, we will.”— Senior Airman Justin Veenstra While COVID compliance has altered how the unit completes its community work with physical distancing, wearing masks, and fewer Airmen permitted, it does not stifle their efforts.

“There are plenty of opportunities to help out the community that entail outdoor work, which enables us to stay away from large groups of people and the risk of confined or indoor spaces,” said Senior Master Sgt. Matthew Voorhees, 50th CES superintendent. “[Airmen] like [the engagements] so much that it pretty much runs itself.”

Voorhees developed the program in 2019 to build rapport and provide Airmen an opportunity to assist the community.

This year, the 50th CES completed projects for Habitat for Humanity, cleaned the Sand Creek Trail, built a fence for the elderly in downtown Colorado Springs and in November, cleaned the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Work at the zoo included 10 Airmen cleaning and restocking the facility’s freezer, washing the hay barn, filling numerous debris carts with old hay and loading

50 bales of hay for an elephant barn. “[Senior Airman] Justin Veenstra, took it upon himself to reach out to the zoo to see if they needed help with anything,” Voorhees said. “We have some creative folks in the CE squadron, so it’s really not difficult [to find quarterly engagements]. Plus, almost any organization in the local area would love to have help to keep things going.”

Veenstra, 50th CES structural journeyman, said it’s satisfying to know that Airmen can benefit locals during the pandemic.

The unit realizes the community has experienced difficulties caused by the pandemic and Veenstra hopes their skills ease those burdens.

“Most civilians and businesses have taken a big hit when it comes to finances and employees,” Veenstra said. “We try to do whatever it takes to help because not everyone is as fortunate as us during this time. If COVID-19 remains the same next year, we plan on helping out just as much if not even more. Times are difficult for everyone, so if we can do anything to help out, we will.”

WASHINGTON — The Department of the Air Force restored military tuition assistance to $4,500 per fiscal year and Air Force Credentialing Opportunities Online preparatory course funding for fiscal year 2021, effective immediately.

The Air Force noted increased usage of tuition assistance since the start of COVID-19 and continuing into the new fiscal year.

“We are excited our members are taking advantage of their time under COVID-19 to improve themselves and pursue education. The Department of the Air Force was able to reprioritize funding to encourage our service members to maximize their development through these educational benefits,” said Lt. Gen. Brian T. Kelly, deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and ser-

vices. “The Department of the Air Force is committed to education and to the continued professional and personal growth of our Airmen and Space Professionals in support of our nation's defense.”

As a result of the reinstatement, both programs will resume the same benefits as before.

For military tuition assistance, Airmen and Space Professionals are eligible for up to $4,500 per fiscal year and a maximum of $250 per semester hour or quarter hour equivalent to cover tuition and allowable fees.

For AF COOL, funding for preparatory courses, also known as boot camps, is restored. AF COOL funding limits remain at $4,500 per life-time.

“Voluntary education and military tuition assistance programs continue to be important to the development of our force,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass. “I’m glad we were able to take a look at the budget again and allow our Airmen to focus

on self-improvement, especially during a time where our world has become increasingly virtual during COVID(-19).”

Additionally, Department of the Air Force officials noted comparing school costs, utilizing other resources such as Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support’s (DANTES) subject standardized tests (DSST), college-level examination programs (CLEP), pursuing Community College of the Air Force degrees and other funding sources, such as scholarships and grants, all help maximize education benefits.

“I am thankful for great leaders who put service members first," said Chief Master Sgt. Roger Towberman, senior enlisted advisor of the United States Space Force.

169th Force Support Squadron MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C. — The holiday season might not be a time to lose weight, but it doesn't have to be a time to lose your health. The key is to go into the holidays with a plan. Here are five ways to keep your health over the holidays.

Tip #1: Shop well for yourself It is more important than ever to stock your kitchen with healthy foods. Have healthy snacks handy. The more convenient they are, the more likely you are to eat them. Instead of thinking about what you shouldn't eat, promise to eat your three to five servings of vegetables each day.

Tips #2: Schedule your exercise Your schedule will be very hectic this holiday season. Schedule your workouts just as you would any other appointment. It's ok if you can't make it to class, but make sure that you get some activity in at least three days per week.

Air Force moves physical fitness assessments to April 2021 Staff Report Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of the Air Force announced physical fitness assessments will now resume April 2021 and will no longer include the waist measurement component.

To ensure physical distancing practices remain in place during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and to give Airmen and Space Professionals time to prepare, testing was delayed from October to January and is now further delayed to April.

“The test will still consist of a 1.5 mile run, 1 minute of pushups and 1 minute of situps. ” While the waist measurement is permanently removed from the assessment, height and weight measurements will resume October 2021.

“We trust that our Airmen understand the standard of good physical health practices and we are all finding innovative ways to stay fit,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. “We also trust that leaders will take the appropriate steps to keep their Airmen safe while making every effort to provide fitness options during the pandemic.”

to physical distancing protocols and other local precautions as determined by installation commanders once assessments resume.

Commanders may delay official fitness assessments beyond April 2021 if necessary, based on the recommendation of local public health officials, the continu-

ation of closed fitness centers and extended state-wide restriction of movement and gatherings.

Space Professionals will adhere to the physical fitness policy of the Department of the Air Force.

Airmen and Space Professionals may

determine their next fitness assessment due date by visiting the Official Physical Assessment Due Date Matrix on myPers, which will be updated and available Dec. 8.

Fitness assessment due dates will primarily depend on the date and score of the last official test.

“Originally, we hoped to resume testing

by January 2021,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass. “However, based on the number of cases nationwide, the right thing to do is focus on keeping our Airmen and their families safe. Delaying and reevaluating the PT test is the best option for our people.”

The test will still consist of a 1.5 mile run, 1 minute of pushups and 1 minute of situps. However, the composite score will be calculated with full points for the waist measurement portion until system changes can be made.

Department leaders are also looking to reevaluate certain testing criteria moving forward.

“Along with removing the waist measurement, we are also exploring alternative strength and cardio components to our current Air Force fitness assessment,” Brown said. “We believe these potential test structure changes will impact Airmen in a positive way and help with a holistic approach to health and fitness standards.”

JTF-SD deputy talks space power during summit

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Christopher Povak, deputy commander of Joint Task Force-Space Defense, spoke about how his unit supports U.S. Space Command’s mission during the Defense Strategies Institute’s seventh annual Space Resiliency Summit Dec. 3.

The two-day, virtual summit brought together senior leaders from across the national security community to discuss the policies and operations needed to ensure the safety of U.S. space-based assets and missions.

In his remarks, Povak focused on strengthening U.S. national deterrence through space warfighting options, growing awareness of space assets, establishing norms of behavior and expanding programs to bring young Americans into the space enterprise.

Also, he highlighted USSPACECOM’s participation in Schriever Wargames and the Global Lightning Exercise, partnered with ongoing efforts within the Commercial Integration Cell and JTF-SD’s Sprint Advanced Concepts Training is key to advancing operations.

“We have found that engaging our interagency partners, academic institutions and commercial companies enables USSPACECOM to reach a younger generation of space-minded professionals and, in doing so, bring forward new ideas and technologies to the space defense enterprise,” Povak said. “These ideas are enabling us to identify new approaches to old problems and adapt equipment and systems intended for a singular purpose to support requirements

Big data was also discussed during a panel later in the day with Space Force Col. Scott Brodeur, National Space Defense Center director.

“The center has evolved in the last couple of years, advancing architecture and onboarding capabilities,” Brodeur said.

“We are taking the 18th’s (Space Control Squadron) proven catalogue and layering in partner data to get a more complete picture at the NSDC.” The JTF-SD SACT exercises provide the forum to work through and develop tactics, techniques and procedures as they onboard and mature partner capabilities.

“We integrate the data into our unified protect and defend infrastructure library and work through how we communicate outward,” he said.

Additional speakers included John Hill, principal director for Space Policy from the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Space Force Lt. Gen. William Liquori, deputy chief of Space Operations, Strategy, Plans, Programs, Requirements, and Analysis, U.S. Space Force, and Shawn Barnes, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration.

AISES award winner expresses passion for her culture

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Master Sgt. Frances Dupris, Space Delta 7 operations superintendent, earned the 2020 American Indian Science and Engineering Society Blazing Flame Award on Oct. 17.

“The Blazing Flame Award is presented to an individual who blazes a path for Native Americans in STEM careers. This award recognizes individuals with 10+ years of professional experience with significant accomplishments in advancing STEM education and careers.

The nominee may or may not have a technical background,” according to the AISES website.

“As a Native American, I continuously support Indigenous students and professionals, on their

future endeavors.”

Dupris stood up Colorado Spring’s first National Security Agency K-12 Academic Outreach program by partnering with Colorado Military Academy for a 5-year educational agreement. The STEM and cryptologic-focused student program advances STEM field and career education.

Dupris also led other vetted military members through interactive STEM talks in multiple classrooms.

Her efforts were deemed impactful in advancing the STEM career field, and in-turn, she was recognized with the Blazing Flame Award.

“There’s not a large percentage of minorities in STEM, to include Native Americans, which is an even smaller demographic,” said Dupris. “As a Native American, I continuously support Indigenous students and professionals on their future endeavors.”

Dupris said she is passionate when it comes to spreading awareness about Native American and Alaskan Native culture, which is why winning this award meant so much to her.

Recently, the 70th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing Diversity & Inclusion Team hosted a Native American Heritage Month virtual panel. Dupris orchestrated this event by reaching out to individuals who identify as American Indian/ Alaska Native on social media platforms – asking if they would take part on the panel, retaining a moderator for the event, and providing a list of suggested questions.

“The panel included veterans and active duty personnel. The questions ranged from their input on why diversity and inclusion is important, their perspective on indigenous leadership, and the panelists shared some of their culture and spoke in their native language” said Dupris.

The pre-recorded panel will be viewable on the 70th ISRW Diversity Facebook page.

Dupris said she’s been involved in Native American Heritage Month and the cultural events in the 19 years she’s been in the Air Force and has no plan to stop being an ambassador for the Native American community.

“I feel it's my duty to continue that throughout my career,” she said.

“Whenever I retire, I will still take part in [these type of] events and help mentor those who are coming up after me.”

There are several resources both on base and in the community to benefit members in this process.

“Individuals may need more than one resource – Military Family Life Counselor, Chaplain, finance or the Air Force Aid Society (other military services have their own) are just a few,” she said.

A&FRC will help members navigate the traditional resources available as well as highlight COVID-specific options.

“During this time, resources vary based on need. I would recommend individuals contact their lenders to discuss options available,” she said. “COVID resources are constantly changing. Some programs may be ending such as student loan deferment, yet others could be extended. It is important to look at programs and what is available currently.”

New Parent Support Program offers comfort

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 21st Medical Readiness Flight Family Advocacy Program offers assistance to expecting and new parents through their New Parent Support Program.

“Our mission is to make sure our folks on base are getting the support they need,” said 1st Lt. Ryan Barney, 21st Operational Medical Readiness flight FAP officer and New Parent Support Program supervisor. “When it comes to expecting a baby, it's always stressful.

We want to make sure families have the resources and support that they need to ultimately prevent any sort of maltreatment.”

The program is free and offered to anyone with a valid ID card who has access to the clinic.

The program also offers lactation, nutrition and stress management classes. Additionally, it provides guidance on how parents can better bond with their children. “[We’re] going to give parents the necessary skills, information and tools to go through their pregnancies and deliveries,” said Betina Hicks, New Parent Support Program nurse manager.

Children must be under the age of three for parents to qualify for the program. The parents can be adoptive, foster or biological.

“If you feel like you're being supported, have resources and you have people you can turn to [for] the help that you need — that risk is really mitigated,” Barney said.

Despite the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, the New Parent Support Program is still operating. In order to protect the health and wellness of its employees and customers, they’ve begun doing appointments over the phone or virtually.

“Do not be afraid of family advocacy,” Hicks said. “Reach out. You can get so many new tools for your toolbox to be a better person, parent or partner.”

Dependent ID shortage at MPF

The Military Personnel Flight is experiencing a shortage of dependent IDs. The Air Force will be shifting to Next Gen IDs for dependents and no longer ship additional orders of the previous ID card stock. To make the current stock last, the MPF will be prioritizing issuance of dependent IDs, only new dependents who have experience a change in status will be issue a card at this time. An exception for expired dependent IDs has been extended to June 30, 2021, with memo in hand that is provided by MPF. Once the Next Gen cards are functional, MPF will start issuing them based on priority and availability. For more information, call the MPF at 719-567-5900.

TRICARE Young Adult enrollees must pay premiums that represent the full cost of the program. These costs have risen, so TYA premiums are increasing for calendar year 2021.

Effective Jan. 1, 2021, the monthly premium for TYA Select will increase from $228.00 to $257.00 per month. The monthly premium for TYA Prime will increase from $376.00 to $459.00 per month.

TYA enrollees may change plans between TYA Prime and TYA Select at any time to enroll in the plan that best suits their needs. Plan changes can be made via beneficiary web enrollment, phone, mail and at TRICARE Service Centers overseas. Cold weather can increase heart rate and blood pressure. It can make blood clot more easily and constrict arteries, which decreases blood supply. This is true even in healthy people. Individuals over the age of 40 or who are relatively inactive should be particularly careful.

National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely: • Do not shovel after eating or while smoking • Take it slow and stretch out before you begin • Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter • Push the snow rather than lifting it • If you do lift it, use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel • Lift with your legs, not your back • Do not work to the point of exhaustion • Know the signs of a heart attack, and stop immediately and call 911 if you're experiencing any of them; every minute counts
